Vena Inez Jones, 101, of Newland, N.C., passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.
She was born on May 30, 1920 in Avery County to the late Henry and Della McGuire. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Judd Jones; and sons, Lane, Alfred, Edward, and Harley Jones.
Vena was a member of Fall Creek Missionary Baptist Church. She loved listening to gospel music and spending time with her family.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Dickie Jones of Newland, NC; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren. and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Carver and the Rev. Mike Ricker officiating.
Visitation took place from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.
Burial took place in the Fall Creek Cemetery.

Melba Estep Julian, age 80, of Hampton suddenly went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was a native of Avery County, NC, but made her home in Carter County. Mrs. Julian was the daughter of the late Conley Ray and Beulah McGuire Estep. She attended Hampton Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Hazel Presnell, her brothers, Bud Estep and Conley Ray Jr .Estep, and her step-mother, Bertie Estep.

Survivors include her husband, Norman M. Julian; two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Dan Akers and Norma Sue and Melvin Gwyn; one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Teresa Julian, all of Hampton; two granddaughters, Amanda Giles and her husband, Jesse K. of Knoxville; Autumn Julian of Hampton; a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Clara Giles, Knoxville; a sister and brother-in-law, Shelby Jean and Robert Oaks; Newland; best friend, Hazel Davis and a special cousin, Bernice Mitchell. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Julian was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her family. She enjoyed gardening and working with flowers. Mrs. Julian was also active in the church and enjoyed helping with the children's programs. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.

The funeral service for Mrs. Julian will be conducted on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 7:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun officiating. Music will be under the direction of Anna Hurley and Greg Odom. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 - 7:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service and at the home at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Shelby Jean Oaks, age 78, passed away Monday, January 15, at Franklin Woods hospital.

She was born on August 18, 1939, in Avery County, North Carolina to Conley and Beulah McGuire Estep.

Shelby lived most of her life in Avery County and was a beloved friend to all being fortunate enough to have known her. She was an outstanding basketball player while attending Cranberry High School in the late 1950's, and married her grade school sweetheart, Charlie Robert Oaks in 1957.

Shelby was brought up in a time when folks worked hard, and carried that same ethic throughout her lifetime, helping raise her niece and care for her father after her mother died when she was just 7 years old. She belonged to the Newland First Baptist Church for many years before transferring her membership to Crossnore Baptist Church. She was always ready to aid friend and stranger alike.

She worked for GF Co. and Grandfather Golf and Country Club for 47 years in several management positions, and was well known for her beautiful flower and landscape designs throughout the resort. Shelby was a truly rare individual, and will be deeply missed.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, are a brother, Landon Lee "Bud" Estep, sisters, Hazel Estep Presnell, Melba Estep Julian, and her step-mother Bertie Pitts Estep.

Shelby is survived by her husband of 60 years, Charlie Robert, who will not be attending the services due to extenuating health issues; one daughter: Deborah Oaks Silver; son-in-law: Bobby Silver; granddaughter: Sommer Trivette; grandson: Jordan Silver; great granddaughter: Tatum Cooke, brother-in-law: Norman Julian; sister-in-law: Mary Catherine Estep, Marilyn Oaks Hughes, Patty Oaks Oxendine; niece: Betty Estep and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins, all loving her dearly. Her co-workers Paulette Hartley and Kathy Harris held a special place in her heart, and will not be forgotten by the family.

Funeral services for Shelby Jean Oaks will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018 at the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Jesse Giles officiating. Interment will follow in the Guinn Cemetery.

Betty Jean worked for many years at IRC, Shadowline and Grandfather Golf and Country Club. She was a very special mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who cared for others more than herself.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two Aunts: Shelby Jean Oaks, Melba Julian; Four half Brothers: Bill Mottern, Freddy Mottern, Kenny Presnell, Benny Presnell; Step Mother: Bertie Estep.

He was born on January 19, 1941 in Banner Elk, North Carolina, a son of the late Hurst McGuire and the late Addie McGuire.

He was preceded in death by his Parents; Two Brothers, Gene Mcguire, Jerry Mcguire; Daughter- In-Law, Sharon Gayle; Grandson, Gregory Gayle, Jr.

Wendell was born and raised in Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church in Beech Mountain, NC but of late he was a member of Meadowview Baptist Church in Mountain City, TN. He was a member of the Southern Country band for 5 years. He enjoyed fishing, carpentry work, playing the guitar, spending time with his grandchildren and his family. He enjoyed listening to Country and Gospel music.

Jerry Gale McGuire, age 72, of Elk Park passed away on August 23, 2016.

A native of Avery County, NC, he was born December 21, 1943 a son of the late Clinton Hurst and Addie Mae McGuire.

He was a longtime member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church where he sung in the choir in his youth.

Jerry worked as an Substance Abuse Counselor with New River Mental Health and also at the University Hospital in Augusta, GA.

He enjoyed computers, geneology and watching westerns on TV.

Along with his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his: brother, Gene Allen McGuire; son-in-law, Christopher Thomas Burke.

Jerry has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Marilyn O. Mr. Jimmie Dale "Paw Jim" Mann, 74, 222 Little Stoney Creek Road, Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at his residence following an extended illness. Now he is cruising on the streets of gold!


Mr. Mann was the son of the late Dayton James and Winnie Arnett Mann and was a native of Carter County. He was a member of the Hunter Memorial Baptist Church and an honorary member of Fountain of Life Bible Church. He was retired from Great Lakes Research as a welder and had also retired from American Bemberg. He was also a member of the Carter County Car Club.


Mr. Mann is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Janette Bowers Mann of the home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Teresa Treadway, Elizabethton; Lisa and Dan Germaine, Elizabethton; Carolyn and Dennis Ledford, Jr. Piney Flats; eight grandchildren, Brandon Treadway, Brian Treadway, Kent Germaine, United States Air Force and his wife Kim; Spc. Kyle Germaine, United States Army, and his wife, Heather, Kurt Germaine, Neil Ledford, Allison Ledford and Jared Ledford; two great-grandchildren, Yasmin Treadway and Savion Lytton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Joyce Mann, Elizabethton; Jerry and Velma Mann, Church Hill and a special sweetheart, Sandra K. Cederborg, Baltimore, MD. Several nieces and nephews also survive.


The funeral service for Mr. Mann will be conducted on Friday, February 13, 2009 at 7:00 PM at the Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, Elizabethton with Dr. Vic Young and Mr. Gerald Holly officiating. Music will be under the direction of Sue Bowers and Dan Germaine. The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Gerald Holly, officiating. ELIZABETHTON - Kenneth Gene Mann, 85, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, July 15, 2021 at his residence. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Dayton James & Winnie Ellen Arnett Mann. Kenneth was a 1954 graduate of Elizabethton High School, he also had classes at University of Tennessee and East Tennessee State University. He served in the United States Army and the National Guard. He was an instructor for 20 years at North East State. He loved to fly and was a private Pilot for years. Kenneth was an avid UT Fan and NASCAR Fan. He loved to attend the Car shows and riding his Motorcycle and farm his family land. He was a former Airport Commissioner and a member of the Elizabethton Elks Lodge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Jimmy Mann. Kenneth was a member of Hunter Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of sixty years: Joyce Hardin Mann. His Daughters: Kimberly (Carl) Miller, and Paula (Donnie)Hall. Two Grandchildren: Chelsie Maupin and Abby (Andrew) Martin. Three Great Grandchildren: Gracie & Carly Jo Maupin and Kenna Kyte. One Brother: Jerry (Velma) Mann. Several nieces & nephews. His special furry companion: Whiskers.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Monday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, Minister and Chaplain Chris Hughes officiating. Sonja D. Whaley, age 79, of Central Community, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018, at Indian Path Medical Center, after a brief illness.

Mrs. Whaley was born in Elizabethton and was a daughter of the late Eustace C. and Leila Bell Hardin McGuire. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Whaley.

Mrs. Whaley was a member of the Roan Street Church of God. She loved to read her Bible and do crossword puzzles. She also loved taking care of her family and enjoyed watching westerns and taking care of her dog, Rachael.

Keith Conley Presnell, age 69, of Andy Hicks Road, Banner Elk, passed away Monday morning, February 24, 2020, at his home.

Keith was born June 15, 1950, in Watauga County, a son of the late Henry Clay Presnell and Hazel Estep Presnell. He was the retired owner/operator of K&G Automotive Repair.

He is survived by his significant other: Melinda Presnell of the home; two Sons: Gary W. Presnell and wife Melissa of Banner Elk, and Terry Presnell and wife Christina of Myrtle Beach, SC; four Grandsons: Justin Presnell, Austin Presnell, Ryan Presnell and Dustin Presnell, all of Banner Elk; three Great-grandsons: Landon Presnell, Aiden Harris, and Westen Presnell; one Great-granddaughter: Aleeah Presnell; five Sisters: Rilda Everhart and husband Mike of Greensboro, Beulah Clawson and husband Troy, Patty Clawson and husband Raymond, Sue Johnson and husband Allen, and Louisa Clawson and husband Allen, all of Elk Park; two Brothers: Bobby Presnell and wife Pat of Vilas, and Billy Presnell and wife Glenda of Greensboro; and a Brother-in-law: Pat Estep of Old Beech Mountain.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three Sisters: Mary Presnell, Ida Presnell, and Betty Estep; and five Brothers: Gurney, Calloway, Ransom, Kenney, and Benny Presnell.

Funeral services for Keith Conley Presnell were conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, March 1, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body lay in state at the chapel from 1 to 2 p.m. Officiating was Rev. Charlie Martin, Gary Presnell, and Austin Presnell. Burial followed in the Presnell Cemetery
