He died of consumption while serving as a soldier during the Civil War, at Cumberland Gap, TN

I am sure he is buried here, although no marker has been found.

His two brothers, Sewell and Benjamin Franklin, who also got sick while serving in the Civil War and died are buried beside each other. Grave markers are found for Benjamin Franklin, and Sewell, but none has been found for Zephaniah.

Sewelll McCourry died on July 22, 1862 in Knoxville, Tennessee of "Flux" and is most likely buried in the Confederate Cemetery there

He and his brothers Benjamin Franklin McCourry, and Zephaniah McCourry all died while serving in the Civil War. Markers have been found for Benjamin Franklin McCourry, and Sewell McCourry at the Tommie McCourry Cemetery, Jacks Creek, near Burnsville, NC No marker has been found for Zephaniah.

1860 Yancey County Census lists Franklin McCourry - age 16 in the household of James and Jane McCourry

Benjamin Franklin McCourry died in Yancey County on July 20, 1863 of chronic dysenetery, when be got sick as a soldier in the Civil War. He and his brothers Sewell, and Zephania served in Company G, 29th NCST. All three got sick as soldiers and died.

"Franklin McCoury, Private, born in Yancey County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Yancey County at age 18, with his brothers, Sewell and Zephaniah, on July 26, 1861. Franklin was captured in Kentucky in September-November 1862. Confined at Chattanooga, TN. Exchanged on January 11, 1863. Died in Yancey County on July 20, 1863 of chronic diarrhea.

He and his brothers, Sewell and Zephaniah, all got sick and shortly died while serving in the Civil War. They are buried next to each other in the Tommie McCourry Cemetery, Jacks Creek, near Burnsville, NC (no marker has been found for Zephaniah)
