MOUNTAIN CITY — Blanche Belle Ward, age 97, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 29, 2012 at the Mountain City Care and Rehabilitation Center.

She was a life-long resident of Johnson County, the daughter of the late John and Mattie Courtner.

In addition to her parents, Blanche was preceded in death by her husband Wade Ward; three sisters, two brothers and two nephews.

Blanche was a member of Liberty Christian Church and a former employee of Blue Ridge Shoe Company.

She is survived by her brother, James Courtner and wife Mary of Hudson, NC; two daughters: Mary Miller of Mountain City, TN and Carolyn Hemming of Jefferson, NC; a son, Eddie Ward and wife Wanda of Jonesborough, TN; ten grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 2, 2012 from the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors Denton Hart and Steven Spencer to officiate. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Graveside Service and Interment will follow in the Brown Cemetery (behind Pine Grove Baptist Church). Grandsons and family will serve as pallbearers.

The family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the caregivers of Mountain City Care and Rehabilitation Center, Caris Hospice and Dr. James Shine and staff for the loving care provided to Blanche.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials in Blanche's memory be made to the Johnson County Emergency Rescue Squad, 203 Vandilla Street, Mountain City, TN 37683.

Pansy Parlee Courtner, age 90, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, January 06, 2018 at the Watauga Medical Center. She was born on June 6, 1927 to the late Clyde and Susie Fritts Courtner. In addition to her parents, Pansy was preceded in death by daughter, Edith Poore; sister, Kate Courtner; brothers: Walt Courtner, Lloyd Courtner and Howard Courtner and great grandchild, Ronnie Clayton Mc-Call.

Prior to her declining health, Pansy enjoyed working in her garden and flower beds. She always loved to sit on her porch and enjoy the outdoors and visit with family and friends. She was a member of Dewey Christian Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her children: Barbara Gentry and special friend, Gerald, Jean Oliver, Rosa Gentry and husband Frankie, Kathy Courtner and Sanford Courtner; sister, Violet Phillips; brother, Clarence Courtner; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at the Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with grandson, Pastor Shannon Courtner officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.

Kate O. Courtner, age 81, of 955 R.D. Campbell Road, Butler, Tennessee passed away Friday, December 8, 2017 at the Mountain City Care Center. She was a daughter of the late Clyde Courtner who passed away in 1995 and her mother Susie Fritts Courtner who passed away in 1948. Ms. Courtner was a member of the Rock Springs Baptist Church.

She was a homemaker who loved gardening. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers; Walt Courtner, Loyd Courtner, and Howard Courtner.

Survivors include: three sons: Marvin Courtner, of the Home, I.G. Courtner, Butler, Tennessee and Kenneth Courtner and wife Vickie, Mountain City, Tennessee. two sisters: Violet Phillips of Butler, Tennessee Parlee Courtner, Mountain City, Tennessee and a brother Clarence Courtner, of Mountain City, Tennessee; ten grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service for Kate will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2017

in the Charles B. Hux Chapel of Hux & Lipford Funeral Home the family will receive friends from 6 until 7 prior to the funeral service, with Rev. Shannon Courtner officiating.

Pallbearers will be Donald Courtner, James Courtner, Tommy Courtner, and Eddie Dickens.

Edna Jean Lunceford, age 80, of 727 Sugar Hollow Road, Elizabethton, TN passed away Sunday, February 8, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Gertrude Fritts McCloud, and one daughter, Kathy Miller.

Edna enjoyed spending time gardening and canning. She especially enjoyed her time as a Pink Lady Volunteer at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

She was formally a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church since 1947.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, L.C. Lunceford; two daughters: Anita Vestal of Elizabethton, TN and Rita Southerland and husband Joe of Elizabethton, TN; two sons: Russ Lunceford of the home and Steve Lunceford and wife Stephanie of Elizabethton, TN; nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one special great grandson Christopher Lee Sims; and several nieces, nephews and special friends, Robert Clark, Johnny Lovelace, Matthew Ainsworth and Brenda Vestal.

Services for Edna were held at the East Side Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Wilson officiating.

Graveside service and interment were at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 14, 2015 from Dyson Grove Cemetery.

ELIZABETHTON - Phyllis Davenport, age 75, of Elizabethton went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 8, 2018 at her residence.

Phyllis was born in Butler, Tennessee to the late Jady and Faye Robinson Fritts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Bobby Joe Davenport; two brothers, Malcolm Fritts and Kenneth Fritts; and a daughter, Kathy Davenport.

Phyllis was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who will be missed tremendously by all who knew her. She was a member of Willow Springs Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Richard Davenport, of Elizabethton; her daughter, Donna Royston and husband Danny, of Lake Wylie, SC; three grandchildren, Devin Trivette, Kayla Davenport and Bobby Davenport; her sister, Helen Huffine, of Elizabethton; and her special friend, Lee Hamm, of Elizabethton.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Phyllis Davenport will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Saturday, March 10, 2018 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. James Henson and Rev. Dean Smith, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Saturday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 PM on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Allen Smith, Bobby Davenport, Austin Jaynes, Jimmy Bowling, John Pansock and Gordon Nidiffer.

ELIZABETHTON - Mitchel Lane Fritts, age 66, of 604 Bingham Street, Elizabethton, TN, lost his battle with cancer on Friday, August 19, 2016 at his residence. Mitchel was born in Mountain City, Tennessee to the late Warren and Helen Ruth McCloud Fritts. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Emeline Fritts, from Mountain City; and his maternal grandparents, Clarence and Ida McCloud, from Elizabethton.

Mitchel retired from the City of Johnson City Water and Sewer Department. He was a member of Eastside Freewill Baptist church, where he was involved in the Food Pantry and Transportation Ministry. Mitchel was also a Reserve Police Officer for the City of Bluff City for 12 years. He enjoyed working on cars and motorcycles and camping and fishing.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 44 years, Nora Hardin Fritts, of the home; a son, Stacy Fritts, also of the home; a brother, Phil V. Fritts, of Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews; and his first cousins, Helen and Phyllis.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Mitchel Lane Fritts will be conducted at 2:30 PM on Monday, August 22, 2016 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Justin Deaton, officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Monday.

The graveside service will follow at Caldwell Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jeff Carr, Mike Tolbert, Jeff Arnold, Allen McCloud, and Matt Pollock. Honorary pallbearers will be Cody Fair, Josh Fair, David Nelson, Cecil Nelson, Dick Mueller, and Lewis Winters.

Kenneth W. "Jack" Courtner, age 62, of 357 Atwood Street, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away Saturday August 18,2018 at the Johnson County Community Hospital, Mountain City, TN. Jack was preceded in death by his parents Ralph Smith and Kate Fritts Courtner.

Those left to cherish Jack's memory are his loving wife, Vicky of the home, his daughter Marie Oates (Mike), 4 sons James Courtner (Angel), Donnie Courtner (Stephanie), Tommy Courtner (Amanda), and Kenneth Courtner Jr. all of Mountain City, TN, 2 brothers Isaac and Marvin Courtner of Butler, TN, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephew, special friends Eddie Dickens and the Charles Osborne family, and his loving dog and constant companion Lady.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Dickens, Clarence Courtner, Bobby Courtner, Edie Courtner, and Howard Courtner with honorary pallbearers being the men from Rocksprings Church of Christ.

The family will receive friends at the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, from 5pm – 7pm. Services will be conducted by Rev. Shannon Courtner on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 10:30am in the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel with graveside services to follow at Rocksprings Baptist Church Cemetery in Butler, TN.
