    Campbell, John, was born Nov.4,1790 in Carter County, TN. His father, Jeremiah Campbell, settled there before the American Revolution, and was a soldier during the Revolution, under Gen Francis Marion. He lived to be about 100 years old. His youngest son, Jackson, was the owner of the old homestead at the beginning of the great rebellion. The farm had then been in the family about 100 years. John Campbell enlisted in a company from Carter County in the war with England, served six months, re-enlisted and served until March, 1815. He was an ensign in the last campaign, and drew a pension to the end of his life. He remained in TN until 1818 when he went to Madison County, IL and was there married Nov 6, 1818, to Lavina Parkison (or Sarah Parkinson on 6 Nov 1818), who was born Feb 21, 1803. They moved to what became Sangamon County, arriving march 22, 1819, on Lick Creek in what is now Chatham Township, and had seven children:

    Alfred C. born 22 Jul 1819, married 3 May 1838 to Polly Foster, seven children--Wm P., John P., Elzira E., Sarah C., Leonora J., Alfred C., and George W.

    William P., born 4 Nov 1820, married 12 Mar 1843 to Elizabeth Carson, 14 children--Josiah W., Jeremiah, William P., James S. (twin to Josiah), Simon P., Isaac H., Jackson, Lonely Arizonia, Beatrice and 5 of whom died in infancy.

    Jeremiah born 22 Dec 1822, married Luro Combs, died in 1853 leaving 2 children.

    Josiah W. born 5 Apr 1828, married Elizabeth Workman, two children, and remarried Angeline White, three children.

    Peter C. born 19 Jan 1832, married Amanda E. Carson and they had 3 children.

    Caroline born 21 Oct 1834 married John Workman.

    After Sarah's death in 1853, he was remarried to Margery Parkison, Sarah's sister in 1855.

    He was the grandson of Zachariah Campbell, Jr. and the great-grandson of Zachariah Campbell Sr., an early settler along the Watauga River, in the area by about 1780, certainly by 1790.

    Alex was a private in Co. B of the 4th Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, U.S.A. (Union). He was among those taken POW at McMinnville, Tenn. by Confederate forces. Several members of the 13th Regiment Tenn. Vol. Cav., U.S.A. and the 4th Regiment were involved in the Bridge Burnings that were planned by William Carter and personally approved by Abraham Lincoln. See the book, History of the Thirteenth Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, U.S.A. by Scott and Angel (1903, reprint 1987) for a discussion of the Union loyalties of Carter County, especially the Hampton area.     MRS. NANCY GARLAND

    Mrs. Nancy Garland, 92, one of the oldest residents in Carter County, died Sunday afternoon at her home in Buladeen.

    She was born and reared in the 12th district and lived there all of her life.

    She is survived by four children, Joe Garland, Campbell Garland, Johnson Garland and Miss Ida Garland.

    Funeral Services and interment will be held at the Garland Cemetery Tuesday evening at 10:30 with the Rev. D. C. Patrick officiating.
