HAMPTON - Mr. Vearl Samuel Julian, age 91, of Hampton, died Friday, August 11, 2017 at Hermitage Health Care in Elizabethton.

He was the last living child of the late Monroe and Hattie Whitehead Julian. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Martha Roberson Julian in 2000; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Wayne Honeycutt; a son-in-law, Perry Bradford; and 15 brothers and sisters.

Vearl was the oldest living Charter Member and Deacon of Sunset Free Will Baptist Church. He was a 64 year member of the Hampton Masonic Lodge #750 F&AM. He proudly served his country during World War II, having served in the United States Army, 778th Tank Battalion and was present at the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Having left home at an early age to join the Army, he along with several others, were honored in a special ceremony in 2001, where they were presented with their high school diploma. He never met a stranger, could always come up with a wise ole' saying and was quick to tell you of his Army travels, his love for his family and the Lord. He was a truck driver for TVA for 33 years and retired in 1988 to travel the country with Martha to multiple gospel and bluegrass music festivals in their motorhome.

Left to cherish his memory are his son and daughter-in-law, John and Mary Jo Julian; and his daughters and son-in-law, Patsy and Harry "B" Crow of Hampton and Sue Bradford, of Elizabethton; grandchildren: Kristi and Jeff Smith of Hampton, Robin and Lynn Honeycutt, of Elizabethton, Renay and Duane Estep and Greg Honeycutt, of Michigan; great grandchildren: Elijah and Hannah Smith, Masie, Janie and Julianne Honeycutt, Kyle and Julie Estep and Brent and Martha Estep; great grandchildren: Preston, Wyatt and Brennon Estep and awaiting the arrival of Emmalyn Estep.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Vearl Samuel Julian will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Monday, August 14, 2017 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Norman Lovelace and Rev. Frank Woods, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Sunset FWB Church Choir and Hannah Smith. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Monday; or at the residence of his son, at 630 Swimming Pool Road, at any time.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Masonic Rites will be conducted by the Hampton Masonic Lodge #750 F&AM. ROAN MOUNTAIN — Ruby Julian Hill, age 84, of Roan Mountain, departed this life on Monday morning, March 28, 2016.

Ruby was born March 2, 1932, and was a daughter of Monroe and Hattie Whitehead Julian.

In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Charles Hill, Jr. on April 4, 1993. She was also preceded in death by several sisters and brothers.

She was a member of Fork Mountain Free Will Baptist Church in Roan Mountain, Tennessee. Ruby was a spoke in the wheel, with her husband, Rev. Charles Hill, Jr., in establishing the Fork Mountain Free Will Baptist Church in the Fork Mountain Community.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Grady E. Hill, of Elizabethton; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Darrell Johnson, of Roan Mountain; daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Doug Blevins, of Hampton; a brother, Verl Julian; grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, Tim and Tammy Johnson, Scotty Johnson, Rev. Ben and Whitney James and Dylan Hill; and great grandchildren, whom she also loved dearly, Miranda Johnson, Mackenzie Johnson and Marlee James.

The family would to extend a special thank you to her niece, who was like a sister, Beulah Garland, also, Vivian Koster, Sue Bradford, Mozella Whittington, and Jackie Brown; and her special nieces and nephews, along with the Vester Hitechew family, who raised her like a daughter, and her special friends, Dorothy Woodby, Jewel Holtsclaw, Betty Lacey, Linda Honeycutt and Clara Green.

It was Ruby's request to have a graveside service at Miller Cemetery, located on Fork Mountain Road, at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, with Rev. Ronald Stevens and Rev. Ben James, officiating. Dewey Murriel Holtsclaw, 85, of Roan Mountain, was peacefully called home on Friday, November 12, following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County and a son of the late Brownlow Walter Holtsclaw and Arthene Mabelle Shell Holtsclaw, Murriel was also preceded in death by the love of his life, wife of 64 years, Ellen Marie Holtsclaw, and beloved daughter, Janet Marie Holtsclaw.
Murriel was born on December 5, 1935 in Elizabethton. After attending Cloudland High School and graduating from the Knoxville Barber College, he practiced as a barber in Clinton, Elizabethton and Roan Mountain for much of his life and into retirement.
He was a proud resident of Roan Mountain, taking great pride in serving his local community with two six-year terms on the Carter County Board of Education as well as 12 years as Constable for Carter County’s second district of Roan Mountain and Tiger Valley.
An avid sportsman, fisher and hunter, he was a member of the High Country Bass Club and Watauga Smallmouth Club, and a successful fly-tier. He loved old westerns, gardening, and hunting and fishing trips with his sons, relatives and friends. He also enjoyed watching Atlanta Braves baseball and rooting for the Tennessee Volunteers, Tennessee Titans and Cloudland Highlanders. Most of all he greatly enjoyed the company of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and close friends.
Murriel was of the Freewill Baptist faith and a former member of the Boundless Love gospel trio.
Along with his parents, wife and daughter, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Tracy Holtsclaw and Leroy Holtsclaw, and three sisters, Faye Largent, Ruby Jean Carnett and Geraldine Edwards.
Survivors include three sons, Ricky Holtsclaw, Michael Holtsclaw and Kenneth Holtsclaw of Roan Mountain; grandchildren, Wes Holtsclaw, Ashlee McKeehan, Carey Lynn Holtsclaw, Sarah Moore (Ryan), and Macala Caraway; great-grandchildren, Aubrey Pike, Sophia Moore, Rhett Moore and Dallas Bell; brother-in-law, Cecil Largent; special friend, Thomas Smith (Natalie); special niece, Candy Harrald; and several other nieces and nephews.
The family will honor the life of Dewey Murriel Holtsclaw on Friday, November 19, at the Holtsclaw Cemetery, 178 Dark Hollow Road in Roan Mountain. A memorial graveside service under the direction of Rev. Randy English with songs provided by Candy Harrald and Sherry Tilson will begin at 11 a.m. Those attending should arrive by 10:45 a.m. Active pallbearers will be Wes Holtsclaw, Ryan Moore, Thomas Smith, Gary Smith, Dale Carnett, Mason Carnett, Cletis Holtsclaw, Lane Holtsclaw and Scott Mays. AVON PARK, FL - Warren G. Ollis, age 97, of Avon Park, FL went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, February 24, 2021. He was born in Roan Mountain, TN to the late Lafayette and Burneice Julian Ollis. Warren served in the Navy and was aboard the U.S.S Nicholson from 1941 to 1946 and later was employed by G.E in Cleveland, Ohio and retired in 1982 after 27 years. After he retired, he spent most of his winters in Florida. Warren was of the Christian faith and a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Linesville, PA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanette Black and second wife, Charlcie Julian; brothers, Ford Ollis, Murell Ollis and Larry (Gene) Ollis, sister, Ella Mae Gibbs; son, Dallas Lane Ollis and step-son, Heirl Julian. Mary Lou Williams, age 81, of Hampton, TN passed away Thursday, June 13, 2019, at the Waters of Roan Highlands. A native of Roan Mountain, she was the daughter of the late William Marion Julian and Mattie Jane Townsend Julian. She had worked as a caretaker. Mary Lou loved animals, especially cats and dogs.

Mr. Johnson was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Clyde and Gladys Julian Johnson. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Johnson, two sisters, Thelma Roberts and Ruby Whisnant, and a brother, Hackie Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was a member and deacon of Friendship Free Will Baptist Church and a retired machinist from Alemite Corporation. He was a 1950 graduate of Hampton High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in Korea.

JOHNSON CITY - Mrs. Lynn Ellyn Julian Green, age 78, Johnson City, passed away Monday, January 19, 2023, at her residence.

Lynn was born on January 31, 1944, in Pineville, Kentucky to Ruby Ellen “Warfield” Julian and Oscar Lee “O.L.” Julian.

Mrs. Green was a member of Marvin’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Green; one son, Kent Julian Green his wife, Dana “Mullins” Green; grandchildren, Macie Ellyn Green, and Kenley Danielle Green; sister-in-law, Deanna Julian; nephew, Zack Julian (Faith).

Mary was born in Roan Mountain, Tennessee to the late Richard and Hattie Mae Julian Ellis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Fred James Greer; her daughter, Brenda Gail Oakley; a son-in-law, Jim Oakley; and three brothers, Dick Ellis, Jack Ellis and Carroll Ellis. Mary was a homemaker and was a member of Algood United Methodist Church. She was an avid quilter, gardener, reader and loved to spend time with her family. Harry Hugh Kerley, age 87, passed away at his home on Thursday, November 18, 2021. A native of Roan Mountain, TN, he was the son of Tom and Helen Julian Kerley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses: Bill and Ruth Kerley, Lawson and Clarene Kerley, Bob and Gloria Kerley, and Betty Lou Kerley Higgins.
Mr. Kerley grew up in the Holiness Church of Roan Mountain where he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was a 1952 graduate of Cloudland High School and attended East Tennessee State College. Afterwards, he took the position of farm management of the Hump Mountain, 2,300-acre sheep and cattle operation for his uncle, Oscar Julian. During this time, Harry was named the “Young Farmer of the Year” for Carter County. In the same year, he became office manager of Farm Credit Services, a position he held until retirement.
Harry married Josephine Miller of Tiger Valley, and they were to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary on December 21, 2021. They made their first home in Tiger Valley and were members of Tiger Valley Presbyterian Church. In 1968, they moved to Mountain City and became members of First Baptist Church where he served as deacon and belonged to Dr. John Payne’s Sunday School Class.
In addition to his wife, Mrs. Josephine M. Kerley, those left to cherish his memory include his five children and their spouses: Kathy and Dan Osking, Annette and Donald Greer, Brenda and David Arnold, Tom and Donna Kerley, Don and Heidi Kerley. He is survived by ten grandchildren: Ian Osking (Ihla), Justin Osking (Gabrielle), Ashley Casaday (David), Warren Kerley (Bailey), Jake Greer (Montgomery), Will Kerley, Nathan Arnold, Sam Kerley, Shane Greer, and Stacy Greer. He is also survived by three great-grandsons: Finn Osking, Carl Ben Osking, and Grant Kerley and was expecting his first great-granddaughter in February. A sister-in-law, Jean Davis and a brother-in-law, Bill Miller also survive.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at First Baptist Church, Mountain City from 2:00-4:00 PM with the funeral service to follow with Pastor Ricky Campbell and Pastor Richard Stout officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 22, 2021 at Happy Valley Memorial Park, 2708 Elizabethton Hwy, Johnson City, TN. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Vera Lee Julian Vance, age 73, of Heaton Creek Rd., Roan Mountain, died Saturday, September 20, 2003 at her residence following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Earnest and Mollie Street Julian.
She was a member of the Upper Heaton Creek Holiness Church and was retired from the Carter County School System, Cloudland Elementary School, where she was a teacher's aide
in special education. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy A. Vance, on August 14, 1996. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Kappie Lee and Donald Vance, of Newland, N.C.; three sons and two daughters-in-
law, Larry and Rosemary Vance, of Elizabethton; Ron and Carolyn Vance, of Roan Mountain, and Danny Ray Vance, also of Roan Mountain; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Marie and Walter Wise, of Marion, N.C.; Rada and J.B. Jones, of Tarpon Springs, Fla; one brother and sister-in-law, Maynard and Shirley Julian,
of Roan Mountain; nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A special caregiver, Kerry Clark,
of Roan Mountain, also survives.
The funeral service for Vera Vance will be conducted at 8 p.m. on Monday, September 22, 2003 at Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron
Chapel, Roan Mountain with Rev. Jim McMahan and Mr. J.L. Holtsclaw officiating. Music will be under the direction of John Charles
Tolley and Sherry Jack Clawson. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at
Earnest Julian Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be Michael Vance, Roy Dale Vance, Zachary Vance, Jim McKinney, Garfield
"Ook" Freeman, and Floyd Hodge. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Daniel Frayne, Howard Metcalf, Bedford Transon, Nick Hodge, Roy
Troutman, Sid Smithdeal, Bill Elliott, Warren Macbeth, Albert Lounds, and Harold Bethany.

ROAN MOUNTAIN - Hershel Julian, 80, of Roan Mountain passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, April 24th at his home. Hershel, a native of Roan Mountain, retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 30 plus years of service. He was passionate about hard work and enjoyed farming. He provided everyone in the community with a variety of produce, and loved sharing his crops with others. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman and Mable Julian, of Roan Mountain, TN, and his wife, Barbara Julian, of Roan Mountain, TN.

He is survived by sons, Craig (and wife Connie Julian) of Roan Mountain, and Brad (and wife Kera) of Huntersville, NC. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jacob (and wife Brooke Julian), Joshua Julian, Laura Julian Taylor (and husband Casey), Jared Julian, Andrew Julian, Jonah Julian, Lincoln Julian, and his great-grandson Judah Julian. He is also survived by two brothers, Don (and wife Pat) Julian, Gerald Julian, and sister Ondrea (and husband Lonnie) Clark.

A service to honor the life of Hershel Julian will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, April 26, 2018 in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain with Pastor Brent Nidiffer, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 9:30 AM on Friday, April 27, 2018 at Johnson-Roanview Cemetery. Music will be provided by Greyson Bledsoe, bagpiper. Active pallbearers will be his grandsons and a grandson- in – law.
