    Notes:

ERWIN — Helen Calhoun Lauther, 91, of Erwin, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Daughter of the late Clyde and Cora Griffith Calhoun, Helen was a native of North Carolina and grew up in Erwin. Helen followed in the footsteps of her father, several cousins and uncle to enlist in the United States Army. She was trained as a nurse and worked in the Womans Army Corps for the duration of WWII. This is where she met her husband Carl.

After the Army, Helen continued working as a nurse at Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and also as private duty nurse. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star in Florida.

Helen has had the privilege of visiting all of the states except the Dakotas and has traveled extensively in Europe. She has visited Russia, India, Kuwait, the Philippines and the Bahamas. She returned to Erwin in 2012 with her daughter, Ande Victoria, her best friend and cruising partner.

Helen sums up her life by stating, "life has passed by quickly, but I have been blessed and am being blessed everyday." She would encourage any young dreamer to never give up on their dreams. It often takes a blind leap of faith to get you where you want to be.

In addition to her parents, Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Carl of 53 years; daughter, Muriel Whitson Laird. Helen Lauther has left behind to cherish her memories, daughter, Ande Victoria Lauther of Erwin; sisters, Wanda Tapp of Erwin, Mildred Schieck of Franklin, NC; grandson, Michael Whitson and wife Jessica of Johnson City.

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Helen Lauther in a funeral service to be at 7:00 PM, Friday, March 18, 2016, in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home. Reverend Tim Tapp will officiate.

A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 6:00 PM and will continue until service time on Friday at Valley Funeral Home.

A committal service will be held at a later time at Daytona Memorial Park, Daytona, FL. Military Honors will be provided.
