Ethel Hill Miller, age 89, formerly of Hampton, went to be with her Lord Saturday, January 1, 2011 in the Pine Ridge Care and Rehab Center. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late A.B. and Hillie Whitehead Hill. Mrs. Miller was a member of Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church and attended Rittertown Baptist Church. She was a former employee of the Dave Simerly Store, and enjoyed gardening and keeping her lawn up. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Romulus S. Miller who died on January 5, 1967; four sisters, Katie Hill, Bell Campbell, Bonnie Stanley, and Maxine Honeycutt; and six brothers, Jim Hill, Walter Hill, Floyd Hill, Clyde Hill, Efford Hill, and Glenn Hill. She is survived by a special niece and nephew, Pauline and George Smith, Hampton; three great nieces, Alesia Ramsey, Shona Fritts, and Terri Berry; a great-great niece, Shelbie Morgan, great-great nephew, Seth Ramsey; and a special friend, Emmie Honeycutt. She is also survived by several additional nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Ethel Hill Miller will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, January 3, 2011 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Richard Stout and Rev. Dean Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Monday prior to the service or at the home of George and Pauline Smith other times. Interment will follow the funeral service in the Whitehead Cemetery in Hampton. Active pallbearers will be Mark Payne, Brian Fritts, Jack Smith, Jerry "Tip" Smith, Mike Smith and Gordon Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Ramsey, Jerry Street, and Seth Ramsey. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Pine Ridge Care and Rehab Center for the loving and devoted care given to Ethel during her illness

BUTLER - Raymond Hill, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at his home in Butler, Tennessee. Born in Roan Mountain, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Floyd and Ruth Whitehead Hill. Raymond was a graduate of Hampton High School and later went on to obtain bachelor and masters degrees from East Tennessee State University. As a life-long educator, Raymond began his career as a teacher at a two-room school in Poga, Tennessee before moving on to spend 25 years as a teacher and assistant principal at Hampton High School. He also served as principal at Siam Middle School and Hampton Elementary School before transitioning to leadership roles at the Carter County Board of Education. He served as Assistant Director of Schools from 1997-1999 and ultimately served as Director of Schools from 1999 until his retirement in 2001. Raymond was inducted into the Carter County Educators Hall of Fame in 2019 in recognition of his contributions in educating thousands of Carter County children during his nearly 42 years of serving as a teacher, principal, coach, and mentor.

As a man of unwavering faith in God, Raymond was a member and deacon of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church in Butler, Tennessee. He previously was a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church in Roan Mountain, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and music director. Raymond most recently commemorated 55 years as a member of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge #566.

In addition to his work and church duties, Raymond served on the Northeast Community Credit Union Board of Directors for 28 years. During that time, he served 17 years as Vice Chairman and the last year as Chairman of the Board.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, as well as a brother, Eddie Hill. Survivors include his wife of nearly 48 years, Karen; two daughters, Susan and Lindsey, as well as a son-in-law, John Feathers. He is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Nicholas Kosco of Bradenton, Florida; his grandchildren: Reagan, Alyssa, and Jake Feathers and Makayla Dockery. Additional survivors include several nieces, nephews, and cousins; special niece and nephew LaGina and David Vaught; An honorary daughter, Jamie McQueen as well as special friends and travel companions, James “Monroe” Stevens and Sandra Forbes.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14th, preceded by visiting hours from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Pastor Dennis Wilson officiating. a special eulogy will be delivered by Kevin Ward, and music will be provided by Bill Anderson. Those serving as pallbearers include: John Feathers, David Vaught, Junior McQueen, Jason McQueen, Eddie Lewis, Adam Morton, Greg Marlow, and Chris Pierce. Honorary pallbearers include: Bernie Hill, Nick Kosco, Kevin Ward, Dallas Williams, Bill Shoun, Jerry Bowers, his church family, Cobbs Creek Baptist Church, and members of the Northeast Community Credit Union Board of Directors. The Entombment services will be held on Thursday, December 15th at 1:00 p.m. at the Mausoleum of Faith at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton, Tennessee. A Masonic Service will be conducted by Roan Mountain Lodge # 566 following the funeral service.

HAMPTON — Luster McKinney Stevens, 91, Hampton passed away on Monday, January 25, 2016, in the Hermitage Health Center.

Born in Carter County to the late Wilson & Bell Hill McKinney. She lived her entire life on Brown's Branch Road.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Conley Jerome Stevens, Sr.; by two grandchildren, Connie Bowers and Melissa Bowers; and three sons-in-law, Terry Hill, Billy Dan Harrell and Randy McKinney; two brothers, Bruce McKinney and Jack McKinney.

Luster was a life time member of Oak Hill Free Will Baptist Church and the oldest member of the church. She loved working in her flowers and visits from her children and grandchildren.

She leaves to cherish her memory two sons & daughters-in-law, Bud & Pat Stevens, Unicoi, and Bruce & Shirley Stevens, Hampton; six daughters & sons-in-law, Wilma & Willard Bowers, Ann Hill, Karen Stevens and Brenda Harrell all of Elizabethton, Loretta McKinney and June McKinney, Hampton; ten grandchildren, Aaron & Polly Bowers, Michael & Brandy Hill, Jamie and Marti McKinney, Christopher & Tracy Stevens, Brian & Tonya Stevens, Teresa & Greg Mathes, Sheri & Ken Trivette, Tammy Hill, Todd McKinney and Tina & John Glover; eleven great grandchildren, Kendra, Andrew, Brooke, Conley, Danielle, Marcus, Jake, Katie, Daniel, Jagger, and Kristen; four great great grandchildren, Ashton, Parker, Carmindy and Paisley.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. on Thursday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Carl Grindstaff and Rev. Jack Lyons officiating.

Graveside and Interment will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 29, 2016, in the Stevens Cemetery, Rittertown Road, Hampton with the Rev. Ted Lewis officiating. Music will be provided by Katie McKinney and Penny Bowers. Active Pallbearers will be Grandsons and a Great Grandson, Jacob Hill.
