Robert “Hayden” Burleson, 85, of Conley Road, Morganton, NC, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020, at his residence.

Born in Avery County on June 3, 1934, he was the son of the late Jess and Sarah McKinney Burleson. His love of driving fast cars led him to a career with the NC Department of Transportation, where he retired after driving trucks for 20 years. He was a faithful member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and a longtime member of the North Carolina State Employees Association.

In addition to his parents, Hayden was preceded in death by five Sisters and two Brothers: Mabel Hughes (Gus), Hazel Tipton (Pete), Oran Burleson, Marjorie Buchanan (Charles), Janice McClellan (Bobby), Paul William “Howard” Burleson (Helen), and Jess Burleson, Jr. (Ruth).

Surviving are: his beloved Wife of 57 years: Billie King Burleson, of the home; Brother-in-law: Bobby King and his wife, Nancy, of Newland; and Sister-in-law: Sally Lou Rominger and her husband, Dana, of Banner Elk; a Sister: Janet Buchanan and her husband, Pat, of Newland; and numerous Nieces, Nephews, Great-nieces, Great-nephews, and Great-great nieces and nephews on whom he doted.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, 2020, at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. in the church with Dr. Dewey Thomas, Mr. Tommy Sain, Rev. Brian Buckner, and Dr. David Burleson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Hayden’s kind smile, devotion to his wife, love for his family, and care for his horses and his yard will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Pat William Burleson, 85, of Roaring Creek Road, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 at the V.A. Community Living Center in Johnson City, Tenn. Born on April 11, 1926 in Avery County, he was the son of the late Zeb and Betsy Hoilman Burleson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jean Isaacs Burleson, who passed away in 2009; two sisters, Belle Richardson and Opal Calhoun; and one brother, Scott Burleson. He was a member of Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church and a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Boone and husband, Bobby of Spruce Pine, and Sherry Pittman and husband, Derrell of Newland; a brother, Ralph Burleson of Newland; one sister, Julie Franklin of Spear; grandsons, Chance Boone and wife, Holly of Bakersville, and Pat Boone and wife, Carrie of Marion; and six great-grandchildren; Shawnee, Cheyenne, Cherokee, Colton, Walker, and Jaxton.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. at Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Jody Almond and Junior Carver officiating. Interment followed in Burleson Cemetery.

JOHNSON CITY — Ben Freeland Arnett fell asleep in death on Saturday, July 16, 2016.

He was 91 years old and born January 5, 1925 in Hampton, TN. He was the son of William E. Arnett and Dovey S. Burleson of Johnson City, TN. He was one of eleven children.

He was predeceased by 5 brothers and 2 sisters.

He is survived by his daughter, Carole Yvonne Ross, husband Ken of Jonesborough, TN; his son, Danny Freeland Arnett, wife Marty of Hilton Head Island, SC; brother, Lloyd Arnett of Orlando, FL; sister, Ruth Burgess of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Thelma McPherson of Orlando, FL. He had 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He also had many nieces and nephews.

He served in the Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Stadtfeld Destroyer Escort in the Pacific. Ben worked many years as a gifted builder and craftsman in Orlando, FL and Johnson City, TN. He was loved by all who knew him, and will be remembered for his easy going nature and gentle ways. He will be missed dearly by all of his family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lake Bridge Healthcare Center for their loving care and attention in his final days.

There has been a private gathering of the family in his memory.

Lillian Hughes Coffey, age 84, of Morganton, NC., passed away on Monday, Sept. 9, 2019, at College Pines Nursing Home.

She was born July 9, 1935, in Avery County, NC to the late Herman Hughes and Mabel Burleson Hughes. She was a homemaker and with her husband of 64 years operated the Texaco at Invershiel & The Sandwich Shop at Invershiel. She and her husband Doug also taught ballroom dancing for many years. She enjoyed gardening and cooking Sunday dinners for her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband: Douglas Coffey, Son: Lyndon Coffey; Grandson: Jonathan Cropper and Brothers: H.D and Harold Hughes.

Left to cherish her memory are Sons: Morris (Donna) Coffey, Michael (Christy) Coffey; Daughter: Sharon (Rick) Moody; Brother: Darrell (Carol) Hughes; five Grandchildren, seven Great Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
