    Nell T. Moody, 99, of Elk Park, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

    A native of Avery County, she was born on Dec. 12, 1912, a daughter of the late William and Lillie Jane Holtsclaw Turbyfill.

    She was a member of Taylor Chapel and graduated from Cranberry High School in 1932.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Moody; sisters, Lora Richardson, Ruth Johnson, Hazel Hamby, Frankie Cook and Stella Potter; brothers, Charlie, Lon, Ben and Paul Turbyfill.

    Moody is survived by her daughters, Louise Winters of Cleveland, Ohio, Gerri Kincaid of Pineola; grandchildren, Charlie Kincaid of North Carolina, Rob Kincaid of North Carolina, Mitzi Kincaid of North Carolina, Judy Workman of Virginia, JoAnn Winters of Ohio, Gregg Winters of Virginia, Barbara Wonkolvich of Ohio; 13 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren.

    Funeral services for Moody were held Friday, Feb. 3, in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Interment followed in Taylor Chapel Cemetery.

    Nell married Leonard Asberry Moody about 1920. Leonard (son of Edward G.     Ben Clifford Turbyfill, age 85, of Elk Park passed away on Wednesday December 3, 2008 at his residence.

    He was born a son of the late William and Lily Jane Holtsclaw Turbyfill.

    Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by; his sisters, Lora Richardson, Ruth Johnson, Hazel Hamby, Frankie Cook and Stella Potter; and brothers, Charlie, Paul and Lon.

    Survivors include; his wife of 65 years, Florence Johnson Turbyfill of the home; sons, Ray and wife Valerie of Roan Mountain, Earl and wife Frances of Elk Park, Danny and wife Betty of Johnson City, Donnie and wife Teresa of Johnson City, Michael and wife Elizabeth of Banner Elk and Hobert (Kim) and wife Linda of Roan Mountain; daughters, Joann Taylor and husband Doug of Elk Park, Patty Hicks and husband Jerry of Elk Park, Geraldine Guinn and husband Spunk of Elk Park and Jill Jones and husband Will of Roan Mountain; sister, Nell Moody of Elk Park; Thirty two grandchildren and thirty one great grandchildren also survive.

    Funeral services for Mr. Ben Turbyfill will be held on Friday December 5th in the Grandfather Chapel at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Newland at 8:00 p.m. with the Rev. John McCoury officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour at the funeral home. Interment will be held on Saturday December 6th at 11:00 a.m. in the Jones Cemetery. Pall Bearers will be; Robert Turbyfill, Ben Turbyfill, Adam Turbyfill, Matthew Clawson, Jack Norwood and Jason Hicks.

    Jerry Leonard Potter, 75, of Elk Park, N.C., joined God's Army on Thursday, May 27th, 2021 at his home.

    He was the youngest son of the late John H. and Stella Turbyfill Potter. He was also preceded in death by his brothers: William Potter and Plez Potter; sisters: Lillie Belle Clawson, Lucille Holtsclaw and Cassie Bruton and special sister-in-law, Tiny Church.

    Jerry enjoyed farming and was a fowl enthusiast. He loved his family and their adopted kids. He gathered them like the Pied Piper. Jerry was a U.S. Army Veteran who loved his country. He fought a good fight and is at peace with God now.

    Left to cherish his memories is his wife of 53 years, Carolyn Potter of Elk Park; sons, Jon (April) Potter of Newland, Jerry Jr. "Tater" Potter of Elk Park; granddaughter, Candice Potter of Hampton, TN; grandson, Jon Jon Potter of Roan Mountain, TN; foster grandson, Bryson Calhoun, and great-grandson and apple of his eye, Mason Gleiser; sisters, Choy Davis of Elk Park, Ruth Hanson of Roan Mountain, TN, and Hazel Carpenter of Hickory.

    A private burial will be held but no services per his request.

    Annie Louella Johnson Hicks, 81, formally of Elk Park, NC passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Autumn Care in Drexel, NC.

    She was born on May 13, 1936, in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of Jesse James Johnson and Ruth Turbyfill Johnson.

    Annie worked in the glove factory in Banner Elk. She loved the Lord and singing in the choir. She used to walk with her children seven miles round trip to church. Annie loved spending time with her family and cooking. She loved watching her cockatiel Clyde.

    Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her: Husband, Carl Herman Hicks; and her oldest son Wayne Hicks; Grandson: Darrell Wayne Hicks; Brother: Bobby James Johnson; Sister: Lola Mae Johnson; Granddaughter: Amanda McKinney.

    Annie leaves behind to cherish her memory her: Sons; David (Cindy) Hicks of Morganton, NC, Jeff Hicks of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Daughters: Janice (Ronnie) Tipton of Spruce Pine, NC, Diane (Ricky) Sparks of Spruce Pine, NC; Tammy (Roger) Phillips of Elk Park, NC; Sisters: Margaret Powell of Elizabethton, Tenn., Clara Sue Clawson of Butler, Tenn., Rosa Lee Benfield of Jonesbourgh, Tenn.; Brenda Gail (Jim) Glover of Elizabethton, Tenn.; 11 Grandchildren and 14 Great-Grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

    Services for Annie Louella Johnson Hicks will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Willard Lambert officiating.

    The family will receive friends beginning at 5 p.m. prior to the service.

    Interment will be in the Mollie Guinn Cemetery on Thursday, March 29, 2018.

    Buddy Joe Hamby, age 57, of Elk Park, NC, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2019. The son of the late John and Hazel Turbyfill Hamby, he was born in Avery County, NC on July 7, 1961.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight siblings, Christine Hamby, Ruby Clawson, Shirley Bare, RD Hamby, JC Hamby, Haroldene Hamby, Frankie Harmon and Kenneth Wayne Hamby.

    Buddy, along with his brother, at the age of 14 began to work in construction and has always built things with his hands.

    He is survived by three Children: Tammy Denise Resendiz (Jose) of Boone, NC; Joseph Allen Hamby (Jennifer) of Marion, NC, and Jessica Ann Resendiz (Juan) of Deep Gap, NC; and five Siblings: Barbara Townsend (Leroy) of Foscoe, NC, Ricky Hamby (Wanda) of Banner Elk, NC, Wanda Hicks (Charles) of Foscoe, NC, Dayton Hamby (Pansy) of Elk Park, NC and Keith Hamby of Elk Park, NC. Buddy is also survived by 10 grandchildren, whom he loved dearly; and a number of nieces and nephews.

    A celebration of his Buddy's life will be held 3 p.m. on Friday, April 19, 2019, at Elk Park Christian Church, 220 Old Mill Road in Elk Park, with Pastor Barry Shepard officiating.

    Ray Turbyfill, age 73, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2019, at the Johnson City Medical Center. Ray was born in Avery County, NC to the late Clifford Ben Turbyfill and Florence Jack Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant Brother: Billy Turbyfill; and two Sisters: Peggy Turbyfill and Geraldine Gwinn.

    Ray was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and was of the Christian faith. He had worked in distribution services for Ingles for more than 10 years. Ray loved growing things such as flowers and trees — he was a wonderful nurturer. He loved children, painting and building and crafting buildings.

    Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted Wife of 27 years: Valleree Jean Queen Turbyfill, of the home; his Children: Doug Turbyfill, Dale Turbyfill, Patty Flowers, Michael Williams, Christopher Hooks and Jake Turbyfill; 14 Grandchildren; 12 Great Grandchildren; Sisters: Joann Taylor, Jill Jones and Patty Hicks; and his Brothers: Earl Turbyfill, Michael Turbyfill, Danny Turbyfill, Donny Turbyfill and Hobert Turbyfill. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    A graveside service to celebrate the life of Ray Turbyfill will be conducted at 10 a.m. in the Johnson Roanview Cemetery in Roan Mountain, Tenn., with Pastor Marvin Slagle, officiating. Active pallbearers will be Jake Turbyfill, Michael Williams, Tanner Hooks, Mitchell Markland, Christopher Callaway and Jordan Callaway. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home in Roan Mountain Rhododendron Chapel at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2019, to go in procession to the cemetery.
