    The following obituary appeared in the April 18, 1955 edition of the Elizabethton Star.

    Mrs. Rebecca Archer Estep, 95 of Route 1, Elizabethton died at her home Sunday afternoon after an illness of four months. She was the wife of the late Isaac J. Estep, who preceeded her in death in 1945. She was a member of the Park Street Church of God. Survivors include five sons Andy Estep, Will Estep, S.M. Estep all of Route 1, Elizabethton, Campbell Estep of 1020 West G Street, Elizabethton and John Estep of 122 Railroad Street, Elizabethton, two daughters, Mrs. C.F. Crowe of Guild, Tennessee and Mrs. Rhudy Fortner of Route 1, Elizabethton, thirty-two grand children and thirty-four great grandchildren. One sister Mrs. Sallie Bowers of Route 7, Elizabethton.

    Mrs. Jo Ann Peters, 80 died at her home in Hampton R-1, Friday evening after a lingering illness. Mrs Peters was a member of the Hampton Christian Church. Survivors: five daughters, Mrs. Hugh Pierce, Hampton, Mrs. E.E. Bowers of Kingsport, Mrs. Bertha Nichols, Johnson City, Mrs. J.C. Bowers R-2, Elizabethton; one son, Mike Peters, Hampton; one step-son, Lige Peters Hampton; 34 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the home of her son, Mike Peters with the Rev. John Hall in charge. Burial will be in the Morton Cemetery. Flower bearers will be the granddaughters. The body will be removed to the home of Mike Peters at Hampton Saturday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock. Roy Hathaway Funeral Home is in charge.

    Mrs. Bertha O. Nichols, 93, 101 Mitchell St., Providence, R.I., died Monday morning in the Elmwood Health Center after a lengthy illness. A native of Carter County, she had lived in Rhode Island for the past 20 years and was a daughter of the late Frank and Joanne Archer Peters. Mrs. Nichols was a Protestant and was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Nichols, Sr., in 1981. Survivors include two sons, Ray Nichols, Rt. 5, Johnson City, and Carl Nichols, Charleston, S.C.; one brother, Mike Peters of Hampton; and two sisters, Mrs. Nell Pierce of Hampton and Mrs. Laura Bowers of Elizabethton. Two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. The body is being returned to Elizabethton for funeral and interment. Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha O. Nichols, 93, 101 Mitchell St., Provicence, R.I., who died Monday, will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday from the Sunset Chapel of Hatahway-Percy Funeral Home with Fred C. Lester, minister, officiating. Music will be by Mrs. Georgia Cox, organist. Interment will be in the Morton Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Friends may call at the residence of a son, Ray Nichols, Rt. 5, Johnson City, at any time.

    Mrs. E.H. Bowers, 64, died at 1:20 pm Monday at a Kingsport hospital after several months illness. Her home was at Jonesboro, Route 5 on the Johson City-Kingsport Highway. She was born in Hampton, and had lived in Kingsport and Washington County for 33 years. She was a member of Grandview Chapter 441 of Eastern Star and was a Gold Star Mother. He son Lt. Wayne H. Bowers died in World War II. Survivors are her husband, E.H. Bowers, Route 5, Jonesboro; two daughters, Mrs. Logan G. Flanary, Kingsport; Mrs. Philip B. Hardymon, Columbus, Ohio; one son, Capt. James B. Bowers, with the U.S. Air Force in Japan; four sisters: Mrs. Laura Bowers, Elizabethton; Mrs. Nan Smith, Hampton; Mrs. Bertha Nichols, Johnson City; one brother, Mike Peters of Indiana. The body will remain in the Hamlett-Dodson Furneral Home in Kingsport where funeral arrangements will be announced later. Funeral services for Mrs. E.H. Bowers will be conducted at 3 pm Wednesday from the First Christian Church, Kingsport, with Dr. L. Palmer Young officiating assisted by Dr. Clyde Smith of the Central Christian Church of Bristol. Burial will be made in the Happy Valley Memorial Park.

    Celia married Emmert Houston Bowers about 1905 in Carter County, , , Tennessee.     Mrs. Laura M. Peters Bowers, 91, Rt. 2, Elizabethton, died Thursday morning, March 3, 1994 at the home of a grand-daughter, Jane Radford, Rt. 4, Elizabethton, following an extended illness. Mrs. Bowers was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Frank and JoAnn Archer Peters. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John C. Bowers in 1964, two daughters, Dimpler Farris in 1970 and Lula Mae Bowers in 1986, and by three grandchildren. Mrs. Bowers was a member of the Blue Springs Christian Church and a retired employee of Southern Cafe.

    Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Laura M. Peters Bowers, 91, Rt. 2, Elizabethton, will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday from the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Bowers Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 until 7 p.m. Saturday and at the homes of her daughters any time. Friends who wish may make donations in memory of Mrs Bowers to the American Cancer Society in care of Mrs. Alta Jane Caudill, P.O. Box 247, Elizabethton, Tenn., 37643. The family, friends, minister and pallbearers will meet at the funeral home at 1:15 p.m. Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery.

    Laura married John Clarence Bowers on 20 Aug 1921 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. John (son of Teter B. Mrs. Estep attended the Old Horseshoe School at Wilbur Lake and was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation after 44 years of service. She attended the Old Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Billy Jack, Earl, Nat, Alfred and Ray Estep.


    Survivors include her daughters, Maxine Lewis and husband Steve, Dimple Church, Tammy Bowers, Rachel Birchfield, Brenda Harvey and Sue Birchfield; a son, Billy Brock; an adopted daughter, Linda Mink; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, David "Cooley" Estep and wife June; a sister-in-law, Georgia Estep; her special friends, Markie Peters and Doris Bullock; and several nieces and nephews.


    Funeral services for Mrs. Estep will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Carl Grindstaff officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, in the Old Horseshoe Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be David Harvey, Paul Harvey, Steve Lewis and Todd Berry. The family would like to express a special "thank you" to Amedisys Hospice for all the care given to our mother.

He loved spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, gardening and being with his church family. He was a member of Hampton First Baptist Church.     Survivors include his daughters: Margaret Luttrell, Judy Estep and Sandra Perkins. Four Grandchildren: Jennifer (Chris) Carter, Norman Markland, Jr & wife Linda, Lisa Norris and Brandy Holder. S.M. was an active member of the First Christian Church of Elizabethton.

    His hobbies were gardening, woodworking and trains.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Humphrey Estep, April 2, 2003; by a sister: Novella Treadway; and three brothers: Infant Howard Dean Estep, Roy Estep and Floyd Estep.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years Frances Stout Estep, a sister Novella Treadway and a brother, Roy Estep.

    He was a son of the late Rhudy and Mamie Estep Fortner. Mr. Fortner was a farmer and a member of the Horseshoe Freewill Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, western movies and all of his friends from John Reed Nursing Home and Four Oaks Health Care Center. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Glenda Hall and Irene Shirley; five brothers, David Fortner, Larry Fortner, Jimmy Fortner, Lloyd Fortner and James W. Fortner.

    Survivors include a sister, Fannie Mae Fortner Henshaw Gosnell of Jonesborough; a brother, Bruce Fortner of Lincoln, Nebraska; two special sisters-in-law, Trula B. Fortner, Elizabethton and Alazine Fortner, Scherltz, Texas; also several nieces and nephews.

    Bill was born in Hampton, Tennessee to the late Mike and Texie Calhoun Peters.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Peters; and two sisters, Louise Hazlewood and Gail White; his second wife, Peggy Smith Peters; and his dog and companion, "Pandora".

    Bill had worked as a pipefitter and was both a United States Army veteran and a United States Navy veteran. He was of the Protestant faith and attended Prayer Tabernacle, where he served as a deacon. Bill enjoyed riding motorcycles, woodworking, shooting muzzleloaders, riding horses and was an avid Philadelphia Eagles sports fan.

    Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of forty three years, Mary Tyree Peters, of the home; six children, Billy Manwaring and wife Carmen, of Dallas, TX, Kitty Moore and husband Ralph, of Elizabethton, Gregory Zane Peters, of Elizabethton, TN, Charles "Cowboy" Webb, of Johnson City, TN, Wendy Webb Avery, of Johnson City, TN, and Jeremy Daniel Peters, of the home; eight grandchildren, Samantha, Zane, Julia, Stephanie, T.J., Kristi, Tamrah and Rylan; fourteen great grandchildren; two brothers, George "Buster" Peters and wife Nancy, of Deer Park, NY and Steve Peters and wife Sherrie, of Jonesborough, TN; and one sister, Carolyn Magnuson and husband Terry, of Mishawaka, IN.

    A service to honor and celebrate the life of William "Bill" Zane Peters will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 29, 2018 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Johnny Hilton and Pastor Mack Presnell, officiating. Music will be provided by Ralph Moore, soloist. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Sunday, or at the residence at other times.

    The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Al Garcia, Shawn Rivers, Joe Currington, Jim Kiser, Smokey Boling and Darrell Wagner.

    The family would like to express a special thanks to the emergency room staff at Johnson City Medical Center and also to the strangers who helped at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Johnson City.

    Rose Ella Bowers Hardin, 85, passed away peacefully the morning of May 6, 2023, in Pompano Beach, Fla., after a lengthy illness. She was born October 13, 1937, to the late John C. Bowers and Laura Peters Bowers in Carter County, Tenn. Rose was a 1954 graduate of Unaka High School. She worked in the restaurant and dietary industry throughout her professional career, including positions at Northside Hospital, Westside Elementary School, and T. A. Dugger Middle School. She was a member of Westside Christian Church. She was a life-long Elizabethton High School football fan and Tennessee Lady Vol basketball fan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Hardin, and five sisters, Lula Mae Bowers, Anna Belle Hardin, Ruth Pierce, Dora Carr and Dimple Farris. She is also survived by her niece, Inez Burton, and several other nieces and nephews.
