    Letha Sluder
    Letha Sluder, 99, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday September 21, 2014, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
    Ms. Sluder was born on January 17, 1915, in Shady to the late Allen "Jim" Wright and Gerdie McEwen Wright.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Sluder who passed away in 2005 and was also preceded by three sons, Herbert, Cline, and Curtis Sluder; and three brothers, Kyle, Preston, and Haynes J.J. Wright; TWO sisters, Retha Morley and Lena Ruth Douglas; and grandchildren, Tim Sluder, and Michelle Sluder.
    She was a former member of the Shady Valley Baptist Church where she was former president of the W.M.U. and was a current Member of the Victory Chapel Baptist Church of Shady Valley. She enjoyed quilting and gardening. She was a homemaker and had at one time worked in the Shady Mountain Orchards.
    Survivors include two sons, Alton Sluder and wife, Shirley, Shady Valley, Tenn., and Kenneth Sluder and wife, Eula, Shady Valley, Tenn.; one sister, Ruby Testerman, Vinton, Va.; nine grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services for Letha Sluder will be conducted on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at 7 p.m. from the Charles B. Hux Chapel of the Hux Lipford Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Porter to officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Pall bearers will be Kenny Sluder, David Sluder, Mark Reed, Blake Grindstaff, Jake Sluder, Daniel Morley, Mike Testerman and Dennis Testerman. Honorary pallbearers will be Emery Blevins, Kenneth Blevins, Wendy Eades, Richard, Tom and Ralph Rosazza, and Kelly Deel.
    Graveside services will be conducted on Wednesday September 24, 2014, at 11 a.m. from the Shady Valley Memorial Gardens. Everyone is asked to assemble at 10:45 a.m.
    Flowers are appreciated or for those who wish memorials may be made to the Victory Chapel Baptist Church, 1059 Orchard Road, Shady Valley, Tennessee.

    VINTON, VA — Ruby Chloe Wright Testerman, 95, of Vinton, Virginia, completed her earthly journey on Monday, February 29, 2016, in Roanoke, Virginia.

    She was living self-reliantly until the onset of a sudden illness in December of 2015. She was born in Shady Valley, Tennessee, on May 17, 1920, the next to last of seven children, to Girdie Belle McEwen Wright and Allen Jesse Wright, on the farm that has been in the family since 1789. Ruby Testerman's calling to care for others has been lived out as a mother and as a nurse on three continents, including Africa, in addition to Europe and North America. Ruby served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Nurse Corps in Swindon, England during World War II, attending to soldiers wounded in The Battle of the Bulge.

    Ruby completed registered nursing training at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. She continued her education at both the Medical College of Virginia and the University of Virginia. From 1954-1987, she worked competently and compassionately as a public health nurse with the Roanoke County Health Department. In her retirement years, she traveled far and wide, as well as donating much volunteer time to church and charitable organizations, making new friends along the way.

    She was the last surviving of the seven children. Her siblings were: Kyle Wright, Walter Preston Wright, Retha Morley McKee, Lena Ruth Douglas, Letha Sluder and Haynes Wright.

    She was one of a long line of strong matriarchs. To know Ruby was to know her mother and her Grandmother McEwen. Her mind for details suited her to being the family genealogist, oral historian and storyteller. She was married for 23 years to Virgil Lee Testerman (d. January 2, 1972).

    Survivors include Michael Lee Testerman and family friend Miriam Daughtry of Richmond, Virginia; and Dennis Eugene Testerman and wife Paula Meador Testerman of Concord, North Carolina. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Eva Testerman and Chrysteen Wright, as well as numerous cousins, nephews and nieces, with whom she has maintained extensive personal ties.

    Family visitation will be held at Oakey's Funeral Services-Vinton, from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 3.

    A celebration of Ruby's life will be held on Friday, March 4 at 11 a.m., at Vinton Baptist Church, where she was an active member for 62 years.

    Family visitation will also be held at Mountain City Funeral Home, 224 S. Church Ave., Mountain City, TN from 6 - 8 p.m. on Friday, March 4. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, in Shady Valley, Tennessee at the old Gentry Cemetery (Shady Valley Memorial Gardens) on US 421.

    BUTLER - Ralph W. McEwen, age 90, of Butler, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, February 4, 2016, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital with his family by his side.

    Ralph was born in Johnson County, Tennessee to the late Jacob Wade McEwen and Ida Lee Lowe McEwen.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

    Ralph retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 45 years of service. He was a member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church, where in the past he served as a Deacon and taught Sunday School. He was very hardworking man; he farmed, raised cattle, was an extraordinary gardener and was known as the "Tomato King" because he grew the best tomatoes!

    Family was important to Mr. McEwen, he was a very loving and devoted husband and father, and his extended family also played an important role in his life. Ralph loved the outdoors and gardening and he loved his wife June's cooking so much! He loved being at home and believed in hard work.

    Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 70 years, June McEwen, of the home; a daughter, Linda McEwen Cole and husband Harold, of Johnson City; a granddaughter, Rebecca Cole Allen and husband Rusty, of Raleigh, NC; a grandson, Chandler Allen, who was the light of his life, of Raleigh, NC; a sister, Kate Arrants-Stermer, of Butler; two special nephews, Dennis Stout, of Winchester, VA and Frank Murray of Stoney Creek. Several nieces and nephews, special neighbors and friends, Jack Slemp, Kenny Lahman, Eric Matherly, Junior McQueen, and Carolyn Lyon also survive.

    A graveside service to honor the life of Mr. Ralph W. McEwen will be conducted at 3:30 PM on Monday, February 8, 2016, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Buddy Street and Rev. A.J. Potter, officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

    The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 2:30 PM on Monday, February 8, 2016, in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton.

    Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the Funeral Home following the Visitation Service to go in procession to the cemetery.

    Loyd W. McEwen, age 90, of North Church St, Mountain City, passed away the evening of Friday December 16, 2022 at his home. Loyd was born September 12, 1932 to the late Walsy G. McEwen and Willa G. Nave McEwen in Johnson County, TN. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Lee Johnson McEwen; sister, Jewel “Sis” Lewis; brothers, Mark McEwen and Hiram McEwen.

    Loyd was a graduate of Johnson County High School and East Tennessee State University. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and participated in numerous submarine dives, including one the world’s first operational nuclear-powered submarine the USS Nautilus.

    Loyd W. McEwen was hired with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the 1960s. During his tenure, he held the roles of a Consumer Safety Officer/Inspector in the States of Ohio and North Carolina and Supervisory Consumer Safety Officer/Direct First Line Supervisor in the State of Virginia. It was in 1976 when Loyd applied and was selected as FDA's first ever Direct First Line Supervisor to be stationed at the FDA Richmond, VA Resident Post. As such, he was instrumental in strengthening cooperative Federal State Relations, particularly with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) and Virginia Department of Health (VDH).

    Loyd was an outstanding supervisor that went above and beyond in caring for the mission of the agency and his employees. Loyd strongly believed in training and providing detailed guidance to the employees he hired and supervised. He made sure that the employees understood what having a balanced work life meant with family even though he would work you greater than 8 hours. Loyd had high expectations of his employees and would do anything for anyone that he worked with for career development.

    In 1993, Loyd was honored to receive the FDA Award of Merit, the agency's highest form of personal recognition. He earned this award for always going above and beyond as a Direct First Line Supervisor and cherished it until his retirement in Jan. 1999.

    When he was able he enjoyed growing a garden. Loyd spent a lot of time talking to people and especially his North Church St. Mountain City, TN friends and neighbors.

    Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Tonda McEwen (Adam) and Susan Johnson (Clyde); grandchildren, Shelby Hayes, April Hayes, Jamie Hayes and Willa Campen; sisters-in-law; Amelia McEwen, Jean McEwen and Carolyn Adams; several nieces and nephews; cousins, Haggard, James, and Charles McEwen; special caregivers, Marie, Tammy, Jeraldine (of Richmond) , the late Dora Adamsand many others past and present.

    The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 23, 2022 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Daniel Jones officiating. The graveside service and burial will follow the funeral from Reece Memorial Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Josh Morefield, Daniel McEwen, Sam McEwen, John McEwen, Terry McEwen, Eric Hill and Adam Campen. Honorary pallbearers are James, Charles, and Haggard McEwen.

    Mark McEwen, age 85, of Butler, Tennessee, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, September 6, 2019 after a lengthy illness. He was born May 8, 1934 in Johnson County, TN to the late Walsy McEwen and Willa Nave McEwen. In addition to his parents Mark was preceded in death by a brother, Hiram McEwen.

    Mark loved his family, especially his six children, the grandchildren and great grandchild and will be truly missed by all. He never met a stranger and enjoyed life. Farming was his life and he looked forward to each day.

    He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee.

    Those left to cherish Marks's memory include his wife of 63 years, Amelia Stout McEwen, children; Ruth Canipe and husband Randy, Vickie Morefield and husband Rick, Emogene South, Terry McEwen, Sam McEwen and Michelle and John McEwen, grandchildren; Josh Morefield, Brittany Brown and husband Josh, Samantha Gilbert and husband Harrison, Joanna Canipe, Zachary McEwen, Nate Reece, Patrick South and Maddie South, one great grandchild, Ella Gilbert, one sister, Jewel Lewis, one brother, Lloyd McEwen, sister-in-law, Jean McEwen, brother-in-law, Porter Stout, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

    The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 8, 2019 from 6-7:00 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor David Bentley and Pastor Dennis Peterson to officiate, music will be by John Brookshire and Megan McEwen. Graveside service and burial will be Monday September 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. from the Shoun McEwen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Adams, Melvin Huyard, Jeff Lewis, Chris Pleasant, Josh Morefield, Jimmy Lowe, Daniel McEwen and Patrick South. Honorary pallbearers are, Chris Vaughn, James McEwen, Porter Stout, Carliss Farmer and Ray Mast.

    Alton L. Sluder, age 78, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at his home in Shady Valley, Tennessee. He was born December 19, 1938 to the late Otis and Letha Sluder. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Tim and his brothers: Cline, Curtis and Herbert Sluder.

    Alton was a lifelong resident of Shady Valley except for a few years that he lived in Maryland where during that time he drove the bus for Continental Trailways and also transported the Washington Redskins to and from games. Alton owned and operated Sluder Brothers Logging with his brothers for many years. He and his wife Shirley retired from S&S General Store.

    Alton was a good husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

    He was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

    Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 56 years, Shirley Jones Sluder; daughter, Pattie Taylor and husband Rick and their sons: Austin Shoun, Matthew Shoun, Chad Taylor, Triston, Taylor and Garrett Taylor; daughter, Jackie Sluder Grindstaff and husband Blake and their daughter, Josie Cheyenne Grindstaff; grandson, Jake Sluder (Tim's Son); brother, Kenneth Sluder and wife Eula; several nieces, nephews and extended family members as well as many close family friends.

    Funeral service will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, November 26, 2017 at the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Pastor Eddie Porter officiating. The family will receive friends from 4-6:00 p.m. prior to the service.

    Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 27, 2017 at the Shady Valley Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Jake Sluder, Matt Shoun, Blake Grindstaff, Rick Taylor, Kenneth Blevins, Tad Morley, Tom Sluder and Tracey Mullins. Honorary pallbearers are Kenneth Sluder, Skip Wills, Jack Smith and Steve Snyder.
