    HAMPTON - Ruby Pearl Cates Calhoun, 90, Hampton, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

    Born October 26, 1925, in Carter County to the late George Edward and Amelia Kate Crowe Cates. She was a graduate of Hampton High School. Pearl was retired as a Bookkeeper with Browns Supermarket & Hardware. She had been employed there for several years. Pearl was an active member of the Hampton Christian Church and the Home Builders Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Carolyn Perry Church Circle and a member of the Hampton Garden Club.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, George Edward Cates, Jr. and Clyde C. Cates; and also a sister, Hazel Heaton.

    Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Raymond Calhoun; a daughter, Lisa Ann Hall and husband Jeff, Kingsport; a son, Dr. Larry Calhoun and wife Kathy, Jonesborough; three grandchildren, Whitney Calhoun Goetz and husband John, Nashville, Dr. McKenzie Calhoun, Johnson City and Nathan Hall and wife Meghan, Milligan College; one great grandson, George Calhoun Goetz; one sister, Charlotte Carter and husband Bob, Elizabethton; one brother, Carl Cates and wife Nell, Elizabethton; two sisters-in-law, Helen Cates and Jean Carroll; her brothers-in-law, Harvey Calhoun and wife Gloria, and John Calhoun and wife Penny; several nieces & nephews.

    A service to celebrate the life of Pearl Calhoun will be conducted at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Grandview Christian Church, 300 University Parkway, Johnson City with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, Mr. Nathan Hall and Mr. L.D. Campbell Ministers officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 10:45 a.m. on Friday, July 22, 2016, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery.

    Active Pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the church at 5:50 p.m. on Thursday and also at Mountain Home National Cemetery at 10:35 a.m. on Friday, will be: John Carter, Ron Calhoun, Bobby McClain, Wayne McClain, Tony Church, Roger Shepard, and Maurice Shell. Honorary Pallbearers will be her church family.

    ELIZABETHTON - Carl William Cates, 89, Elizabethton passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Edward & Amelia Crowe Cates. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School, East Tennessee States Teachers College with a Bachelor Degree in Science and a Masters of Arts Degree. Carl served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. His first part time teaching career was at Tennessee Military Institute; his first full time job was Band Director at the Elizabethton City School System. He also worked part time for the New York Central Railroad. He started Cates Music Center, Johnson City in 1966. He formerly was a member of First Christian Church where he served as choir director for a number of years. He was a Charter member of East River Park Christian Church where he served a choir director for 27 years. He was an Elder and formerly served as Chairman of the Board. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Hazel Heaton, Pearl Calhoun and Charlotte Carter and one brother: Clyde Cates.

    Survivors include his wife of 63 years: Norma Nell Lowe Cates. Two Sons: Jeffrey Cates & wife Regina and Gregory Cates all of Elizabethton. Two Grandchildren: Christopher Cates & wife Brandi and Josh Cates & wife Veronica. Several nieces & nephews. His sisters-in-law: Helen Cates, Dorothy Peters and Alean Cooper & husband Don. His brothers-in-law: Bob Carter, Raymond Calhoun and Howard Elliott.

    A Service to celebrate the life of Carl Cates will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. John H. Smith and Mr. Lee Hunt Ministers officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 10:45 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2018 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Music will be provided by Mr. David Arney, Organist and Mr. Scott Reynolds, Pianist. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 10:35 a.m. Monday will be: Chris Cates, Josh Cates, Derrick Stanley, Jimmy Lowe, John Carter and James Smith. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Leonard Peters, Raymond Calhoun, Don Cooper, Ted Colbaugh, Tom Mooney, employees and former employees of Cates Music Center, members of his Sunday School Class and Bill Feathers, Teachers and his church family. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday prior to the service. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard.

    Charlotte Helen Cates Carter, of Elizabethton, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2016, at home surrounded by her family. She was born May 18, 1933 in Hampton, Tenn., to the late George Cates and Amelia Crowe Cates.
    Charlotte was a graduate of Hampton High School. She was retired from Southern Finance, where she worked for many years. Charlotte attended Westside Christian Church in Elizabethton.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, George Edward Cates Jr. and Clyde C. Cates, and two sisters, Hazel Heaton and Pearl Calhoun.
    Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Bob Carter; two daughters, Sandra Fair of Austin, Texas, and Jane Thompson and husband Tim of Boone, N.C.; two sons, Dennis Carter and wife Lola of Gray, Tenn., and John Carter and wife Wendi of Johnson City, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Amanda Carter and husband Nick of Gray, Tenn., Bobby Carter of Atlanta, Ga., Graham Fair and Gavin Fair of Johnson City, Tenn., Chase Thompson and Reagan Thompson of Boone, N.C., and Jack Carter of Johnson City, Tenn.; one great-grandson, Carter Leach; one brother, Carl Cates and wife Nell of Elizabethton; one brother-in-law, Raymond Calhoun of Johnson City, Tenn.; and one sister-in-law, Helen Cates of Hampton.
    A graveside service and interment for Charlotte Helen Cates Carter will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 21, at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton.
