    ELIZABETHTON - Lee Hasferd Slemp, 80, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017 at his residence after a brief illness.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Oliver S. & Winnie Wilson Slemp. He was a 1954 graduate of Happy Valley High School and attended Steed College. Hasferd served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. In earlier years he was a truck driver and was employed in the Carpenter Shop at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. Until his retirement, he was Manager at the Watauga Baptist Lodge, Ridgecrest, North Carolina. Hasferd was a 50 year member of Watauga Masonic Lodge #622 and was a member of Jericho Shrine Temple, Kingsport. He was a member and former Chairman of the Deacon Board at Oak Street Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Hugh Slemp.

    Survivors include his wife of 62 years: Emma Jean Fair Slemp. A Daughter: Valencia Greenwell, Elizabethton. A Son: Greg Slemp, Elizabethton. Two Grandchildren: Neil Greenwell & wife Wendy, and Shana Brower. Two Great Grandchildren: Donavon and Maysan Brower. A sister: Marty Tuelle, Elizabethton. Four Brothers: John L. Slemp & wife Betty, Jimmy Slemp & wife Ann, Jerry Slemp & wife Janice and Johnny Trivette. Several nieces & nephews.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2017 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Chris Shumate and Rev. Bob Polk officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be selected from family members. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Rev. Bob & Ruth Polk, Rev. Jack Roddy, Rev. John & Gail Perkins, Rev. Gary & Sarah Edwards, Bill Sluder & wife Carlene, Silas Tester & wife Marilyn, Jay & Terria Harms, Will & Eleanor Andrews, Truman Clark & Wife Phyllis and his church family. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Monday prior to the service. A Masonic Memorial Service will be conducted following the funeral service by Watauga Masonic Lodge # 622. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the staff of Amedisys Hospice and the staff of Hands to Help Senior Care for the excellent care that was received.

    ELIZABETHTON - James Oliver "Jim" Slemp, 78, Elizabethton went to be with his Lord, Friday, July 19, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Oliver S. & Winnie Wilson Slemp. Jim was a 1959 graduate of Happy Valley High School. He was retired from the Southern Railway Company after 25 years of service in the Richmond, Virginia Division. After retirement Jim & Ann returned to Elizabethton from Burkeville, Virginia where they lived for 20 years. He was a member of the Burkeville Fire Department for 17 years upon departure was awarded an Honorary Membership. He was also a member of the Town Council of Burkeville. After returning to Elizabethton he was employed as an Assistant Superintendent with the Carter County Highway Department. Jim loved his church, Oak Street Baptist Church. He was an avid golfer and hunter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Hasferd Slemp and his brothers & sisters-In-law: Lena Rowe, Joan Faulkner, Sue Hill, Homer Hyder and Richard Hyder.

    Survivors include his wife of 55 years: Ann Hyder Slemp. His Children: Francie (Scott) Elrod, Johnson City, James Oliver Slemp, Jr.(Anita), Mercersburg, Pa. and Scotty Slemp, Elizabethton. Six Grandsons: Nathan, Nick, Connor Slemp, Tre Brown, Alex & Jacob Tolley. His sister: Marti Tuelle. His brothers: John L. (Betty) Slemp, Jerry (Janice) Slemp and Johnny Trivette. Several nieces & nephews. His Brothers & Sisters-in-law: Jean Slemp, Virginia Coleman, Shirley Crigger, Diana Bowman, Doug Hyder and Robert (Bob) Hyder.

    A Service to celebrate the life of Jim Slemp will be conducted at 12 Noon Monday, July 22, 2019 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Dr. Chris Shumate officiating. Internment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Kevin Slemp. Active Pallbearers will be: James Oliver Slemp, Jr., Scotty Slemp, Brandon Tuelle, Thomas Isaacs, Mike McKinney, Greg Hyder, Mark Mallasch, Tre Brown, and Scott Elrod. Honorary Pallbearers will be: his church family, all his golfing buddies and his hunting buddies.
