Winnie Arnold, 96, 1717 Miami Drive, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2008, at her residence.

A native of Butler, Tennessee, she was a daughter of the late L.L. Smith and Victoria Matheson Smith.

Mrs. Arnold was a member of King Springs Baptist Church and Little Milligan Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Home League of the Salvation Army and the Johnson City Senior Center. She was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Arney McFall; second husband, Eugene Arnold; children, Kenneth Fred McFall, William "Bill" McFall, Bobby Eugene Arnold and Sylvia Miller.

Survivors include her sons, Roy Wagner, Ronnie McFall and Jerry McFall; daughters, Pearl Atwood, Kate Eldreth, Vella Ward and Frances Richardson; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; special friends, Dorothy Perry, Anna Lee Shell and Myrtle Miller.

The funeral service for Mrs. Arnold will be conducted at 2:30 PM Saturday, April 26, 2008, from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Cornett and Rev. Nick Bradshaw officiating. HAMPTON - Michael Eugene "Gene" Smith, 83, of Hampton, TN, went to his heavenly home on 25 July 2019, after a brief illness.

He was born in Cardens Bluff to the late Clarence Condred and Mary Campbell Smith. Gene was employed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation, Engineering Division for over 31 years, where he was known as 'Rigger'. After his retirement from TDoT, he continued in construction another five years, working for Summers and Taylor.

Gene was a member of Rittertown Baptist Church where over the years he served as deacon, church treasurer, trustee, Sunday School Director, and sang in the choir. He also served on the house and grounds committee as well as church custodian. He loved to serve others whether giving of food from his garden, handy man repairs, or mowing someone's lawn. Hobbies included deer hunting, fishing, and restoring antique furniture. He too, delivered meals to the shut-ins in the Hampton area for Meals on Wheels.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Tafeda Payne and Dorthy Ramsey, brother Gordon Jay Smith, a nephew Gordon Smith, and a niece Dani Payne Colbaugh.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirley (Teague); three sons Michael and wife Robin (Honeycutt) of Hampton, Jeffrey and wife Jill (Halcomb) of Somerset, KY, and Joseph and wife Angel (Wright) of Batesburg, SC; three grandchildren, Caleb and wife Domonique (Goodwin) of Johnson City, and Isaac and Faith of Batesburg; one great grandson Lincoln of Johnson City; a brother George and wife Pauline (Honeycutt) Smith and several nieces & nephews.

Visitation will be held at Rittertown Baptist Church, Monday, 29 July at 12:00 pm followed by funeral services at 2:00 PM with Pastor Richard Stout and Bro Dean Smith officiating. Special music will be provided by Mary Roberts and Tom Little. Interment will be in the church cemetery following the service.

Active pallbearers are Caleb Smith, Isaac Smith, Seth Ramsey, Mark Payne, Craig Odom, Travis Potter, Gary Smith and Jack Smith. Honorary pallbearers are his church family, his coworkers of TDoT, and the men of the community.

George Randell Smith, 82, of Hampton, Tenn., passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2021, at his residence. George was born in Hampton to the late Clarence C. Smith and Mary L. Campbell Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael E. Smith and Gordon J. Smith, and two sisters, Dorothy Ramsey and Tafada Payne.
George retired from Hampton Utility District as a manager. He was an active member of Rittertown Baptist Church until his illness prevented it.
Those left to remember and cherish George’s memory include his wife, Pauline Honeycutt Smith, of the home; two daughters, Alesia Ramsey and husband Gerald of Hampton and Shona Smith and Rick, also of Hampton; two grandchildren, Shelbie Morgan and Seth Ramsey, both of Hampton; a sister-in-law, Shirley Smith of Hampton. A service to celebrate the life of George Randell Smith will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 9, at Rittertown Baptist Church with Pastor Dean Smith officiating. She was a daughter of the late John Edward and Jeanne Marie LeSchairre Wild and was born in Ponchatoula, La. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Crawford Alexander Smith; a daughter, Sherry Bowling; three sisters, Orris Caldwell, Norma Goudeau and Yvonne Saltzman; one brother, John Wild.
Mrs. Smith was a devout Catholic and homemaker. She loved to garden and can vegetables and she also enjoyed quilting.

ELIZABETHTON - Robert Lee Long, 68, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, May 26, 2017 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

He was a Carter County native. Lee was a 1966 graduate of Unaka High School. He was a retired Carpenter. He was a member and Deacon of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church. He loved to play the Guitar and work in his garden. Lee was preceded in death by his mother: Ruby Olena Smith Long.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years: Brenda Ellis Long. Three Daughters & Sons-In-Law: Karen & Andy Wilson, Teresa & Adam Taylor and Kelly & Bob Carr all of Elizabethton. Seven Grandchildren: Kayla & Derrick Wilson, Austin, Dustin & Logan Taylor, Lucas & Jacob Carr. His Step-Father: Jessie Long. Two Brothers: David Long & Wife Lori and Chris Long all of Elizabethton. Geraldine S. Livingston, age 92, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at her residence. Geraldine was born in Carter County to the late Joe and Reatha Goodwin Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Livingston; her sisters, Betty Nave, Christine Oxendine and June Steffin; a brother, Vernon Smith; and a stepmother, Florence Leah Smith.

Geraldine retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 50 years of service in the beaming department. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Carol Ann James, 81, of Gray, passed away Saturday, August 1, 2015, at Life Care Center of Gray. She was a homemaker and a longtime resident of Gray. She was the daughter of the late James Smith and Vergie Smith Matherly. In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her son, Dr. Gary W. James, and a grandson, Adam James. Survivors include her daughter, Ramona Houston and husband David of Gray; granddaughter, Amanda Holt and husband Thomas of Decatur, Ga.; grandson, Caleb James of Elizabethton; and two great-grandsons, Jackson and Logan Holt of Decatur, Ga. Roy J. Wagner, 91, of Butler, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. Roy was born in Johnson City, Tenn., to the late Kemp and Winnie Smith Wagner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Bill McFall, Fred McFall, Jerry McFall and Ronnie McFall; three step-sisters; one step-brother, Bobby Arnold; and three grandsons.
Roy was a man of few words, but was a hard worker and loved serving his country in the United States Army. He served in the Army for three years, then retired from Inland Container Corporation. Roy was a member of Little Milligan Baptist Church since 1976. He enjoyed working in the garden, spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. Roy also loved the Redskins.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 70 years, June Wagner of Butler; his daughter, Judy Peters of Elizabethton; his son, Michael Wagner and friend, Lisa Champagne; his grandson, Matthew Wagner and girlfriend, Courtnie McKinney; and two step-sisters, Kate and Pearl. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Elbert and Ada Smith Fortner.
Mr. Fortner was retired as a dye setter with American Air Filter. He was a member of the Old Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church. His hobbies were gardening, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Dayton Blevins, Elizabethton; a grandson, Steven Oliver, Elizabethton; two brothers, Jack and Billy Fortner; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for Dennis Columbus Fortner will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, in the Old Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Norman Loveless officiating. Interment will follow the service. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Jackie Willard Fortner, 82, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Elbert and Ada Bell Smith Fortner. He was a graduate of Unaka High School where he was a member of the baseball team. Jackie served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He was employed at Great Lakes until it closed and retired from Bosch Inc., Johnson City. Jackie was an avid golfer and athlete. He played organized sports most of his life. He made a hole-in-one August 10, 2012 and won a state championship with his teammates in his 50+ basketball league. He loved nature and loafin’ in the mountains. Jackie was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church but attended First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Todd Fortner; three brothers, Dennis, Wayne and William Fortner; and two sisters, June Hicks and Jean Webb. Survivors include his son, Keith Fortner, and grandson, Dwayne Fortner. He had a very special friend and companion, Peggy Campbell, whom he loved dearly. He had several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Travis Fortner. He loved his two special little friends, Kennedy and Peyton. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, in the Old Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Todd Hallman officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be his golfing buddies.
