    Gladys Marie McCloud, age 73, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born on April 1, 1942 to the late Ray and Venia Loggins Icenhour.

    Gladys is survived by her husband of 54 years, Derl H. McCloud; daughters: Alesia Marie McCloud-Chan and husband Paul H. Chan of Denver, CO and Teresa Pearl McCloud Chaplain of Zionville, NC; sister, Laura Ann Davis and husband Charles of Mountain City, TN and her two daughters, Anita Perry and Dianne Wilson; grandchildren: Johnathon Dwight Chaplain, Jessica Lauren Chaplain, David McCloud Chan and Andrew McCloud Chan and many other special nieces, nephews and cousins.

    Gladys graduated from Johnson County High School in 1960, attended Garner-Webb College from 1960-61, and then later received a B.S. in Elementary Education from Carson-Newman College in 1989. She was an active 4-H member and a member of both her high school and college debate teams.

    Gladys and her husband, Derl, published The Tomahawk newspaper until 1986, and she wrote a weekly column, "Gabbing with Gladys." After they sold the newspaper, Gladys returned to college and finished her degree, and Derl took seminary classes and entered the ministry. In 1990, Gladys began working as a teacher with Johnson County Public Schools. She taught second grade at both Neva School and Roan Creek School and after retiring from the classroom in 2007, she continued to work as a certified reading tutor through December of 2014. During this time, she also worked alongside Derl as pastor's wife in four churches: State Line Baptist Church, Roan Creek Baptist Church, Shady Valley Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist Church.

    Raised in Rainbow Baptist Church, Gladys was a devout Christian woman who read her Bible every morning and night. After she and Derl were married, they became members of Roan Creek Baptist Church. Then, when their daughters were teenagers, they joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where Gladys and Jean Wilson began an Acteens program. They rejoined Roan's Creek Baptist Church after Derl retired from the ministry. In every church home, Gladys was involved in WMU, Vacation Bible School and a host of other church and Watauga Baptist Association activities. Over the years, she and Derl also organized and participated in over 25 mission trips across the United States, including trips to Florida, Missouri, Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

    In addition to church related activities and spending time with family, Gladys enjoyed quilting, reading and being outside. She and Derl also loved to travel and visited 47 states, as well as England and Scotland. In 2012, they shared a special trip to Alaska in honor of their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Roan Creek Baptist Church with Pastor David Hankal officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will follow the funeral at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday evening, May 2, 2015, at Roan Creek Baptist Church.

    Pallbearers will be Willie Arnold, Roy Hodges, Larry McCloud, Van Neely, Tom Nelson, Wade Thomas, Bill Wilson and Tom Wallace.

    Gladys married Darold Harry McCloud about 1960 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. Darold (son of Harry Shultz McCloud and Hazel Marie Stout) was born on 26 Aug 1935 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 26 Apr 2020; was buried in Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery, Johnson County, Tennessee, .
