Martha Whittington (Granny) Pittman, age 90, of Newland, NC was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior, on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at her residence after a prolonged illness.

She was born on March 11, 1929, in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Willard and Ethel Hicks Whittington.

Martha enjoyed family gatherings, family beach vacations, attending her church at Frank Presbyterian Church (where she had served as a Sunday School teacher, teaching the youth of the community), eating out and shopping with her sister, Louise. She worked for Tar Heel Mica Company, Glen Raven Mills, retired from Baxter Healthcare, and then retired once more from the Avery County CAP Program at the age of 82.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband: Jack Richard "Dick" Pittman; a Grandson: Michael "Hippy" Singleton; and 12 siblings.

Martha leaves behind to cherish her memory her: Daughter: Donna (Junior) Singleton of Newland, NC; Son: Jack Pittman of Newland, NC; Son: Jim (Mary) Pittman of Newland, NC; Sister: Louise Buchanan of Newland, NC; Sister in law: Toni Whittington; Grandchildren: Lorie Singleton, Jim-Bob Pittman, Jared Pittman: Step Grandchildren: Cheyenne Richardson, Natalie Richardson, Dixie Richardson-Pittman, Brian Jones, Brandon Jones; Great Grandchildren: Cainan Singleton, Kacey Garland, Carson Singleton, Cole Singleton; Step Great Grandchild: Tyler Jones; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services for Martha Pittman will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 29, 2019, from the Frank Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Hal McNeely officiating.

The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday at Frank Presbyterian Church.

Interment will follow the service in the Pittman Cemetery.

Carrie Louise Buchanan, 89, of the Powdermill Community, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 4, 2021.

Louise was born on October 26, 1931 to the late Willard and Ethel Whittington and was the last surviving child of 13 siblings. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ogden Avery Buchanan and sons, Robert and Avery Buchanan and his wife, Betty. Carrie was a member of Powdermill Baptist Church and enjoyed attending Frank Presbyterian Church and listening to Pastor Hal McNeeley. She was a simple lady. She enjoyed being a housewife, her flowers and reading. She will be missed by her family, friends and especially her friends at Linville Cove Apartments.

Surviving is her daughter, Connie Eller and husband, Sam, of Powdermill; grandchildren, Eric Buchanan, Regina Vance (Roy), Tina Hughes, Michael Buchanan, Wyndy Pritchard and Carrie Eller Linnertz (Colton); eight great-grandchildren; six great, great-grandchildren and daughter-in-law, Vonda Buchanan of Powdermill.

Private graveside services will be held in Yellow Mountain Cemetery with Michael Burnop officiating.

Lexie A. Vines Trivett, 86, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Friday, January 3, 2014, after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Arthur and Geneva Vines; several brothers and sisters; and her husband, Clarence Trivett. Mrs. Trivett grew up in Flat Springs, Tennessee, and in 1947 married Clarence Trivett. His career took them to many places, but in 1955 they purchased and settled on a farm in Bristol, Tennessee. Her three loves in life were her faith in God, her family and her home. She gave her life to the Lord as a pre-teen and lived for Him thereafter. She was a member of Mt. Holston Baptist Church for the past fifty years and loved her church family dearly. She loved to sing in the choir and learned from her father to read shaped note music at an early age. Most family gatherings included singing, right up until her death. She read her Bible faithfully and taught her children many Bible verses. One of the highlights of her life was the trip she made to Israel in 1999. Mrs. Trivett retired from the Bristol Regional Medical Center, where she worked in the Birthing Center for thirty-five years. She loved every baby born there and while shopping often met mothers who remembered her. After she retired she spent time crocheting and tatting afghans, bedspreads, doilies, dolls and tablecloths that were either given as gifts or kept as family heirlooms. Her green thumb made the hill where the family home is located memorable. She is survived by four children, Carolyn (Steve) Bullock, Jacksonville, FL, Jimmy Trivett, Bluff City, Jeffrey Trivett, Piney Flats, Vicky (Phil) Keen, Bristol, TN; two sisters, Dora Wagner, Waconia, MN; Shirley (Allen) Harmon, Elk Park, NC; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. The family requests the comfort and honor of your presence at the Celebration of the Life of Mrs. Trivett on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at 11:00 AM in the Mt. Holston Baptist Church, Bluff City, with Pastor Danny Ray Hardin and Sherrell Dunn officiating. Dallas Ernest Brown, 74, of Elk Park, North Carolina went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 24, 2022 at his residence.
Dallas was born on May 10, 1947 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late Nath Brown and the late Edith Hicks Brown.
Dallas retired as a Technician for Waste Water Treatment and had attended the Browns Memorial Holiness Church. He loved spending time with his family and playing and listening to gospel bluegrass music. He enjoyed fishing and gardening, but tinkering was his favorite hobby.
He was preceded in death by his father, Nath Brown; mother, Edith Brown; brother, Basil Brown.

Dallas leaves behind to cherish his memory wife, Debbie Church Brown; four daughters, Sherry (Mack) Powers of Lansing, NC, Shelia (Buzz) Ollis of Banner Elk, NC, Mary Clark of Newland, NC, Shannon (Jody) Puckett of Banner Elk, NC; son, Dallas (Katy) Brown II of Elk Park, NC; sister, Wanda (Richard) Clark of Elk Park, NC; brother, Bert Holtsclaw of Summerville, SC; grandchildren, Brandy, Amber, Britney, Daniel, Makayla, Macy, Madison, Brody; great grandchildren, Ayden, Caleigh, Jayden, Wyatt and Scarlett.

WARNER ROBINS - Joyce Ann Amos peacefully passed away early on the morning of Friday, February 19, 2021, at the age of 78. The daughter of the late Earnest and Carrie Hicks, Joyce was born on October 29, 1942, in Gray, Tennessee. She was a proud military wife and with her husband, they moved around often. She worked in quality control at Frito-Lay for 17 years before becoming a Church Secretary at the Cochran Field Church of God. Joyce was of the Pentecostal faith. She had a green thumb and enjoyed cultivating many types of flowers. She was also a talented singer. All will miss Joyce dearly as she imprinted on the lives of many during her time here on earth.

In addition to her parents, her son, Stephen Amos and her daughter, Sandra Amos, preceded Joyce in death.

Her legacy will live on through her husband of 61 years, William “Bill” Amos; son, William Bill Amos, Jr. (Deb) of Colorado; daughter-in-law, Gaye (McCullough) Harris of Centerville; grandchildren, Christopher Amos (Sylvia) of Texas; Kayla Crow of Indiana; Clayton Amos of Missouri; Ashley Poole of Statesboro; and Alyssa Simpson and Amanda Simpson, both of Tennessee.

A visitation will be held Monday, February 22, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service celebrating Joyce’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Joyce will be laid to rest in Parkway Memorial Gardens.

Linda Thomas Whittington, 80 of Elk Park, N.C., departed this life unexpectedly at her home on Monday, October 18, 2021.
Born January 16, 1941 in Banner Elk, NC to the late Floyd "Shorty" Thomas and Irene Turbyfill Thomas. Linda grew up in Cranberry and attended the Cranberry high school where she and her sister were cheerleaders.
Linda was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a sister, Kathi Gray; a twin sister, Sandra Ollis; and one brother, Robert Thomas.
Linda was a member of Elk Park Christian Church. She enjoyed being at home and spending time with her family.
Survivors include husband, Charles "Chuck" Whittington and son; Tim of the home; one daughter, Beth (Mike) Wagstaff, Winston Salem, NC; sons, Mark (Meesie) Harris, Greg (Diann) Harris of Elk Park; Eddie (Melissa) Harris, Johnson City, TN; step son, Don (Mary) Whittington, of Oklahoma; six grandchildren and one great grandson. Many friends and relatives also survive.
Services for Linda Thomas Whittington will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at the Elk Park Christian Church, with Rev. DeWayne Sabisch officiating.
The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the church. Interment will follow in the Cranberry Cemetery.

Doyle Eugene Whittington, age 61, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2019, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Avery County, he was a son of Toni Hopson Whittington and the late Arrie Whittington. Doyle loved to joke around and enjoyed fishing.

Surviving in addition to his mother, Toni, is his Wife: Eleanor Johnson; Daughters: Chasity Carpenter and husband, Freddie, of Newland, and Candance Johnson of Elizabethton, Tenn.; Grandchildren: Chase and Chelsey Kirkpatrick; Brother: Wade Whittington; Nieces: Faustin Forester (Grayson) of Elk Park, Fallon Hopson (Gary) of Mountain City, Tenn., and Rachel Whittington of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and a Nephew: Carl Whittington, also of Oak Ridge, Tenn.
