    Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Gladys Potter, finished her earthly race from her home on Buck Mountain where she had lived for more than 101 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, William H. and Emma Potter Elliott; her beloved husband, Crawford Potter; her most beloved son, Fred A. Potter; two sisters, Maggie Bowers and Goldie McKinney; and one brother, Henry Elliott.
    Gladys was a member of the Elizabethton Church of Christ.
    Gladys leaves behind her son, Albert (Norma) Potter, who treated her with more love and respect than any blood daughter could have; a daughter, Bell Bennett; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
    A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, in the Elliott Family Cemetery. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the staff of Amedisys Hospice. Special thanks to Billie Allen, who has helped dad and mom for years. So much appreciated are Kacey Lyons, Emma Holtsclaw and Diana Potter, who made it possible for mom to stay home.

    On November 26, 2015, at Roan Highlands Nursing Center, while giving thanks, Jesus answered Goldie McKinney's Prayers; she went to be with Him for Thanksgiving Day.
    Born July 18, 1924 to the late William and Lula Potter Elliott, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years, Charles Milton McKinney Sr., a sister, Maggie Elliott Bowers; a brother, Henry Elliott, two sons-in-law, George Birmingham and Lester Leon Hicks; and three grandsons, Kevin Birmingham, Bobby Jack Brown and Brian Stacy McKinney.
    Goldie worked for several years at the Crossnore Hospital and also Cannon Memorial Hospital. Goldie loved the Lord and her church family. She was a member of Roan Mountain Church of Jesus Christ. She loved to read her Bible, loved to fish and loved to crochet.
    Leaving to cherish her memory are her daughters, Carol Ann Birmingham, Baltimore, Md., Juanita and Jack Brown, Woodbridge, Va., and Doris Hicks, Elk Park, N.C.; a son, Rev. Charles and Brenda McKinney, Roan Mountain; her grandsons, Mark Birmingham, Jeffery Hicks and Aaron McKinney; and her great-grandchildren, Ian Brown, Logan Hicks, Elijah, Connor, Kiera and Brooklyn McKinney. Goldie leaves many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors (Jackie and Patsy Blackwell, who always kept a watchful eye to make sure she was OK), whom she loved and cherished. Her memory will live on in those who knew her.
    Funeral services for Goldie McKinney will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, November 29, at Roan Mountain Church of Jesus Christ, 307 Main Street, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Charles McKinney, the Rev. Chris McCoury and the Rev. Adrian Morales officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday, November 30, in the Elk Park Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the church at 9:30 a.m. Monday, will be Aaron McKinney, Jeff Hicks, Logan Hicks, Adrian Morales, Scott Potter and Casey Hartley. Honorary pallbearers will be Jackie Blackwell, Sam McKinney, Walter McKinney, Conley Shell and Kenny Jones. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the staff of Roan Highlands Nursing Center and the staff of Bristol Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Roan Mountain Church of Jesus Christ. Friends may also visit with the family at her residence. Family and friends will assemble at the church at 9:30 a.m. Monday.
