Mrs. Eliza Jane Hyder, age 62, of the Gap Creek community, passed away suddenly last night at 7:20 o'clock in a car while on her way to the home of her son, Brown Hyder, where she has made her home. She was returning from a visit with her daughter, Mrs. Luther Hill.
Mrs. Hyder was been in failing health for the past year. She was born 16Sep1881 at Gap Creek & had lived in that community all her life. Her husband preceded her in death several years ago.
She was a member of the Zion Baptist church at Gap Creek.
Survivors are 6 daughters, Mrs. Earnest Allison of Johnson City; Mrs. Romney Blevins of Elizabethton; Mrs. Reva Smith, Mrs. Luther Hill, Mrs. James Britt, of Gap Creek; & Mrs. Orville Markland of Milligan; 3 sons, Pvt. Miss Seffie Ann Dugger, 102, of Southside Road, Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at the home of her daughter. Miss Dugger was born in Elizabethton and was a daughter of the late William David and Nancy Jane White Dugger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Charlie, Ed, George, Tip and Alvin Dugger; a sister, Alice Bailey; and two granddaughters, Aleta Jane Darnell and Cynthia Ann Andes.
Miss Dugger worked at Bemberg until her retirement and then was a cook at Southside Elementary School. She was a charter member of Southside Christian Church. She loved to work in the yard, do gardening, canning, cooking and being outdoors. She also enjoyed quilting.
Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Laura Mae Suddath, of Greeneville, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Kelly Roberts and her husband, Tony, of Greeneville, and Pamela Ensor and her husband, Alan, of Johnson City; seven great-grandchildren, Ryan Humphreys, Paula Dean Nave, Lauren Wines and her husband, Buddy, Lindsey Sawyer, Gabe Roberts, Brooklyn Roberts and Katelyn Roberts; three great-great-grandchildren, Bentley Sawyer, Talon Sawyer and Cheyenne Finkle; and her special furry friend, Buster the dog. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Miss Dugger will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, January 26, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Chaplain Leonard Shelton and Mr. Mike Koruschak, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of No Name But His. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1 until 2 p.m. Friday, prior to the service. Interment will follow the funeral service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Buddy Wines, Ryan Humphreys, Alan Ensor, Gabe Roberts and men of the church. Vance Hyder, age 99 of Elizabethton passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Oscar and Jane Dugger Hyder. Mr. Hyder was a farmer, who enjoyed raising tomatoes and was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation after 42 years of service. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Jenkins Hyder, December 27, 1998, two brothers and nine sisters.


Survivors include daughter, Nancy Diane Hyder, Elizabethton, three sons and daughters-in-law, Norman "Buddy" Hyder and wife, Jeane Smithdeal Hyder, Elizabethton, Carmon Ray Hyder and wife, Sue Calloway Hyder, Johnson City, Tony J. Hyder and wife, Brenda Peters Hyder, Elizabethton. Ten grandchildren, Michael K. ELIZABETHTON - Hannah Maye Dugger Whitehead, 101, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, September 26, 2021 in the Hermitage Health Center. She was born December 10, 1919 in Carter County, to the late Stephen Jett and Nell Ward Dugger. She had lived her entire life in Gap Creek area. Mrs. Whitehead was the oldest member of Zion Baptist Church where she had attended her entire life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Charles Whitehead, two sons: Jimmy and Ralph Whitehead, one daughter: Phyllis Merritt, two grandsons: Marcus Merritt and Chris Whitehead, two brothers: James and Clarence Dugger. Four sisters: Laura Taylor, Anna Pate, Virginia Wilson, and Joyce Dugger and her daughter-in-law: Shirley Whitehead. She loved to work in here flowers and her garden and loved to sew.

She is survived by two sons: Terry and Steve Whitehead, One great granddaughter: Falon Whitehead and one great grandson: Chris Whitehead. One sister: Artha Loveless, several nieces and nephews. Also, her special friends: Joan Whisenhunt, Bobbie Taylor, Juanita Wodard, Shirley Cole, Pansey Johnson, Cheryl Harrison, Mittie Huffine and Gay Loveless.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday, September 29, 2021 in the Hyder-Dugger Cemetery (Jim Elliott Road) with Dr. Alan King officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends

James Maynard "Jimmy" Dugger, age 80, 813 Hemlock St., Elizabethton, Tn died Thursday, November 8, 2007 at his residence.

He was a Carter County native and a son of the late Jett and Rosa Nell Ward Dugger.

Mr. Dugger retired from NARC after forty-three years of service and was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church. He was a member of Watauga Masonic Lodge #622 F&AM, the Elizabethton York Rite Masonic Bodies and Jericho Temple Order of the Shrine, Kingsport. Mr. Dugger served on the Board of Directors for Happy Valley Credit Union for three years and on the Credit Committee for twenty-nine years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Wilson and Laura Taylor.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Cannon Dugger of the home, one son: Gary Dugger, one daughter and son-in-law: Elaine and Scott Wilson, NC, four grandchildren: Jordan Masters and husband Kevin, Gavin Dugger, all of Erwin, Shawn Riddle and wife Vickie, Cool Springs, NC, Lance Riddle, Troutman, NC, three great-grandchildren: Nori Page Riddle, Calub James Riddle, Nicholas Trent Riddle, and four sisters: Anna Pate, Hannah Whitehead, Artha Loveless and Sue Dugger, all of Elizabethton. Artha Loveless, 92, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at her residence. A native of Carter County, Artha was born on May 6, 1929 to the late Jett and Nell Ward Dugger. In addition to her parents, Artha was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, George Randolph Loveless; her brother, Jimmy Dugger; and her sisters, Laura Taylor, Luster Pate, Virginia Wilson, Sue Dugger and Hannah Whitehead.
Artha was a wonderful homemaker, mother, wife and grandmother and was a member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Artha loved her family and her church family and will be dearly missed.
Those left to cherish Artha’s memory include her daughter, Kathy (Kenny) Lethcoe; her special granddaughter, Cara Carr; her grandson, Jackson Richerson of Mobile, Ala.; her granddaughter, Nora Grace Richerson, also of Mobile, Ala.; and her special friends, Jeff and Sandy Carr, Debbie Wilson, Sandi Harris and Haynes Carr. Several nieces, nephews, neighbors and her church family also survive.

JOHNSON CITY - Joyce Sue Dugger, age 78, of Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Joyce was born in Carter County to the late Jett and Rosa Nell Ward Dugger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Wilson, Anna Pate and Laura Taylor; and two brothers, Jimmy Dugger and Clarence Dugger.

Joyce retired from Sycamore Shoals Hospital as a medical transcriptionist. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church and she loved sports, especially UT football and the Dallas Cowboys. Joyce also enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sisters, Artha Loveless and Hannah Mae Whitehead; as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Joyce Sue Dugger will be conducted at 2:30 PM on Thursday, March 1, 2018 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with her great nephew, Joshua Pate, officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Billie Jack Glover, age 89, of Johnson City, TN passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2016 in NHC Health Care-Johnson City following a brief illness.

The families of Jack Glover will hold a Celebration of Life to honor the man who was special to so many. It will take place Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the Fellowship Hall of Fall Creek Baptist Church, 4241 Beech Mountain Rd., Elk Park, NC.

Born May 22, 1927, Jack went to be with the Lord on July 13, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents Dave and Bess Glover, and a sister Georgia Ford.

He is survived by two sisters: Pearl (Kenneth) Jones and Betty (Bob) Townsend, both of Johnson City.

Jack's first wife, Nadine (Church) Glover, passed away, leaving him with three young children: Judy Kay Scott, David (Donna) Glover of Meadville, PA and Phillip Glover (deceased). At this time, Jack helped to create a new family, joining with his Aunt Mayzie Hagie (deceased), a widow with two children still at home: Stanley (Kathy) Hagie of Sylvan Beach, NY and Jean (Tim) Sherwood (deceased).

After many years, he met and married his second wife, Nadine (Hangartner) Glover (deceased). She was a widow with five children: George, Sam (Gwen), Anita (Wayne) D'Hondt, Darlene (Arthur) Platt, all of NY and Tim (Kim) Hangartner of Morristown, TN (deceased).
Jack became "Dad", "Papa", "Pop" or "Jackson" to all. He was also Grandpa to many including Christina (Robert) Warnock, Stephanie (Tom) McCaffrey, Jeff (Kim) Glover, Darryl (April) Glover, Silver Marie Glover, Ken (Glenda) Hagie, Madeline Sherwood, Aaron (Kelly) Sherwood, Emily (Chris) Byler, Nate (Sara) Zapp, Ginni Platt, Jeff Platt, Deanna (Tom) Poczciwinski, Sam Hangartner and Kyle, Aubrie and Tyler Hangartner. He had several great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. His nieces and nephews were special to him and he was known to some as "Our Tennessee Dad". He had a special "daughter", Deltah (Paul) Kleinhans, and remained close all his life to the siblings of his first wife: Vivian Schackow, Joyce Reece (deceased) and Ross, Dale, Hobert Jr. and Lowell Church.

JOHNSON CITY - Edna Pearl Glover Jones, 88, Johnson City went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, January 6, 2018 in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home after an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Dave & Bess Emmert Glover. Mrs. Jones worked at TPI and retired from North Electric. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter: Edna Ruth Terry, A Grandson: Jeff Buck, a Brother: Billy Jack Glover and a sister: Georgia Ford. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband of 71 years: Kenneth Jones. A Son & Daughter-in-Law: Tony & Irene Jones, Johnson City. Four Grandchildren: Mark Jones, Brian Buck & Wife Tracie, Mooresville, NC., Tina Michelle Buck and friend, Mike Hughes, Elizabethton and Kim Reec & husband Anthony. Seven Great Grandchildren. JOHNSON CITY - Kenneth Wayne Emmert, 83, Johnson City, passed away Saturday, December 11, 2021, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.
Ken was born in Carter County to the late Joseph and Dimple Hopkins Emmert.
Ken proudly served in the US Air Force for four years. Ken worked as a boiler operator for the power plant at ETSU and retired from North American Rayon after 31 years. He was a member of the Dasheill Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM.
In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by: his wife, Peggy Perkins Emmert; and one sister, Joanne Marley.
Survivors include: two brothers, Bobby Emmert and his wife Elaine and Ronny Emmert; several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend and neighbor, Deborah Stewart.

ELIZABETHTON - Charles "Julian" Bailey, age 80, of Elizabethton, TN went to be with his Lord on Sunday, August 19, 2018 from Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

Born in Elizabethton, TN he was the son of the late George Pierce Bailey and Alice Elizabeth Dugger Bailey. He retired as a Supervisor from Inland Container after forty-five years of service. Mr. Bailey was a member of Southside Christian Church and he served in the U. S. National Guard for eighteen years. He enjoyed fishing and playing golf.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis "Susie" Miller Bailey and a sister, Elsie Kyker. Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Robert Bailey and wife Carla, Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Alex Bailey and wife Haley and Andrew Bailey, all of Elizabethton; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Stanley Bailey, Elizabethton; three sisters, Cleo Kelly, Johnson City; Mary Jane Calhoun, Elizabethton and Betty J. Ford, Elizabethton and a special nephew, Gene Bowman, Elizabethton. Several other nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Charles "Julian" Bailey will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 22, 2018 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Mr. Michael Koruschak and Mr. Keith Whitehead, ministers officiating. Music will be under the direction of No Name But His. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Wednesday prior to the funeral service or at the residence of a sister, Betty Ford, 1728 Southside Road, Elizabethton at other times.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 23, 2018 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. JOHNSON CITY - Shirley May Williams, 75, Johnson City passed away Thursday, March 31, 2022 at Lakebridge Healthcare in Johnson City. She was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County and was a daughter of the late James Luther Britt and Luster Hyder Britt. Shirley worked for many years as a CNA. She enjoyed working in her flowers, gardening and walking her dog. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters, June Hughes and Florence Hughes.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Dallas Franklin Williams; a son, Stephen Allen Williams of Johnson City; a sister, Dorothy McKinney of Anniston, Alabama; six nieces and five nephews.

Norman Eugene "Buddy" Hyder, 81, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2017, in the Pine Ridge Care Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Vance & Ethel Jenkins Hyder. Buddy was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. He served in the United States Army. He was owner & operator of Hyder Tomato Company. Buddy was a member of the Valley Forge United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Tony Hyder, a brother-in-law: Allen Smithdeal and a special friend: Mike Honeycutt.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years: Jeane Smithdeal Hyder. A daughter & son-in-law: Kathy & Rick Boling, Elizabethton. A son: Andrew Hyder, Elizabethton. Four Grandchildren: Justin Boling & wife Danielle, Austin Boling, Andrea Hyder and Amy Hyder. One Great Grandchild: Madison Boling. Nancy Diane Hyder, 68, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at Johnson City Medical Center. Nancy was born in Carter County to the late Vance and Ethel Jenkins Hyder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman "Buddy" Hyder and wife Jeane and Tony Jack Hyder, and one nephew, Patrick Hyder.
Nancy was a legal secretary and had worked for both Sam LaPorte and T.J. Little for many years. She was a past president of the Legal Secretary Association and was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Elizabethton.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Michael K. Adams of Elizabethton; a brother, Ray Hyder and wife Sue of Johnson City; and a sister-in-law, Brenda Hyder of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

JOHNSON CITY - Heaven gained the most beautiful angel, Linda Sue Markland Russell, 65, Johnson City went home to be with the Lord on October 12, 2015 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Born in Carter County on January 14, 1950 to the late Orville & Temperence Hyder Markland. She was retired from Leon Fernbach, Inc. She was the greatest wife, mother, grandmother, sister and great grandmother to ever walk the earth. Everyone who knew her loved her so much because of the amount of love she always gave in return. She was truly a remarkable lady and this world really lost a great woman. Linda was of the Baptist Faith and a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters: Jane Cable and Sandie Campbell and her sister-in-law, Donna Markland. Survivors include her husband: Thomas Russell and they were to celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary on November 7, 2015. Three Sons: Thomas Jr. and his wife Amy, Elizabethton, Christopher and his wife Tonya and Michael and his wife Emily all of Johnson City. Six Grandchildren: Christopher Jr., Jordan Blake, Logan, Taylor, Trevor and Bailey Russell , two great grandchildren: Aisley and Hailey. JOHNSON CITY - Barbara Ruth Goodwin, 65, of Johnson City, went to be with her Lord on Monday, January 14, 2019 at NHC Healthcare of Johnson City.

She was born in Elizabethton, a daughter of the late Albert and Nola Yelton Hyder.

Barbara was a member of University Parkway Baptist Church, where she was a preschool teacher in the Livewire Children's Ministry for over nine years. She was a devout Christian and was part of the Explorer Bible Study group for over 30 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Wayne Goodwin; and three sisters, Brenda York, Marrian Smith, and Jewel Richardson.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Goodwin; a stepdaughter, Patsy Hayes; a stepdaughter, Lois Brady and her husband, Ron; a stepdaughter, Donna Mitchell and her husband, Fred; a stepson, Gary Goodwin; a brother, Carl Hyder and his wife Donna; and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

The Goodwin family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 19, 2019, in the Morris-Baker Funeral Home Dogwood Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 19, 2019 in the Morris-Baker Funeral Home Dogwood Chapel and will be officiated by Dr. Michael Oaks. ELIZABETHTON - Mrs. Stella Marie Hardin Henegar, 81, of Elizabethton, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Henegar was a native and life-long resident of Carter County. She was the daughter of the late J. Smith and Loretta Dugger Hardin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine Henegar, Sr., who was the love of her life, and a grandson, Jonathan Reece, her best pal. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond L. Hardin in 1989; Earl K. Hardin, Sr., in 2015; and Archie D. Hardin in May, 2016.

Mrs. Henegar was a graduate of Hampton High School. Her first job was at the old Anderson Supermarket on E Street during Christmas. She later worked at Eagle's, and for many years at the Tastee Freez, and later at Summers Hardware. She was a charter member of Beck Mountain Baptist Church, but later became a member of Sims Hill Christian Church, where she enjoyed worshiping until she was unable to attend due to her illness. Mrs. Henegar was a big supporter of the Carter County American Cancer Society Relay for Life, being a three time survivor of cancer herself, and in 2008 served as honorary chairperson. She was a homemaker and enjoyed taking care of her family and being a caregiver. She especially enjoyed being with people and talking to them on the telephone. She also enjoyed sitting on the front porch and shopping. Her favorite places to shop were Wal-Mart, Peebles, and the grocery store, because of the many people she met. She was a collector of red birds and bird houses.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Reece and her husband, Terry, of Butler; a son and her primary caregiver for the past several years, Blaine "Buddy" Henegar, Jr. and his special friend, Ladonna Williams of Elizabethton; one brother Teddy (Sharon) Hardin of Hampton; five sisters, Helen "Sally" Matherly and Rozella Hardin of Elizabethton, Jane (Wayne) Browder of Gray, who was her caregiver, took her shopping, out to eat, and to the doctor, as well as many other activities; Rebecca Shipley of Blountville, and Elaine Larkins of Elizabethton; a special nephew, Danny Henegar; and a special niece, April Matherly. Several other nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Henegar will be conducted on Monday, October 3, 2016, at 7:30 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Campbell and Rev. Steve Guinn, officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:30 PM on Monday prior to the service, and at her home, or the home of her daughter, at any time.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at 11:00 AM at the Sims Hill Christian Church Cemetery, with Rev. Bryan Smith officiating. Active pallbearers will be Wayne Browder, Teddy Hardin, Danny Henegar, Matthew Hughes, Earl Hardin, Jr., Allen McCoy, and Brian Busler. HAMPTON - Archie Dean Hardin, 75, Hampton, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2016 in the Roan Highlands Nursing Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Smith & Loretta Dugger Hardin. Archie was a 1959 graduate of Hampton High School. He was a former employee of Beaunit Fibers and retired from the Carter County School System as a mechanic & bus driver. He was a member of the Beck Mountain Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Raymond & Earl Hardin. Survivors include his wife of 55 years: Martha Honeycutt Hardin. Four Sons: Billy Hardin and Elizabeth Buttke, Erwin, Jeffrey Lynn Hardin, Elizabethton, Jamie Hardin, Marietta, Georgia and Jessie Hardin & Wife Sarah, Roan Mountain. Four Grandsons: James, Justin, Hunter & Bryson Hardin. Gary L. Dugger, 63, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Sunday, December 29, 2019, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late James Maynard Dugger and Dorothy Charlotte Cannon.
Mr. Dugger was a firefighter for the Johnson City Fire Department. He was free spirited, fun loving and when his health abled him he enjoyed being outside.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Shane Riddle.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Jordan Masters and husband Kevin and Gavin Dugger, all of Elizabethton; a grandson, Greyson Dugger; a sister, Elaine Wilson, Elizabethton; and a nephew, Lance Riddle.
