    DEATHS
    John Hamilton (Uncle Ham) Arnold, 94, of Rt. 1, Neva, died Wednesday, 9:30 p.m., after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Alexandria[sic] and Nancy Stout Arnold. He was a native of Johnson County, a retired farmer. Uncle Ham was a member and Deacon of the Locust Gap Freewill Baptist Church.
    Survivors include one son, Duff Arnold, Shouns; two daughters, Mrs. Velma Mink, and Mrs. Sarah Tester, both of Neva; one sister, Mrs. Iva Lee Church, Johnson City; 23 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
    Pallbearers were John Mink, Eddie Perkins, Kelly Mink, Bill Dunn, Johnny Earp, Hugh Walker, and Claude Tester.
    Lewis Gentry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    Funeral services were conducted Saturday, 2:00 p.m., from the Locust Gap Freewill Baptist Church, with Rev. H. C. Price, Rev. D. C. Byrd, and Rev. J. D. Price officiating. Burial was in the Gambill Cemetery.

    Claude C. Arnold, age 35, a Johnson county native and a veteran of World War II, died Saturday night, Dec. 4, in Creston, N.C., of what Carolina officers termed a self-inflicted wound.
    C. S. Neal, clerk of the Superior Court in Jefferson, N.C., quoted the Ashe county coroner as saying that Arnold died as the result of a self-inflicted rifle wound.
    He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
    Survivors are his mother, Mrs. Lizzie Arnold, Neva; one son, Lester Arnold, Neva; six brothers, William Coolidge, and David Arnold of Baltimore, Md., Walter Arnold of Hampton, Joe Arnold of Neva, and John Arnold of St. Louis, Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. Nannie Hartman of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Beulah Mink and Mrs. Rosalie Dunn of Neva.
    Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Johnson Chapel, with Rev. Earl Campbell and Rev. John Vannoy officiating. Burial was in Arnold Cemetery. Hill Funeral Home in charge.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Clayton and Elizabeth Rainbolt Ward. Mrs. Whaley was a member of Little Milligan Baptist Church for seventy years where she was active in Women on Mission. She retired from the Carter County School System where she worked as an aide on the bus for handicapped students. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Whaley, November 13, 1988 and one son, James D. "John" Whaley in 1995. Survivors are one daughter and son-in-law: Roma and Phillip Waycaster, Kingsport, one son and daughter-in-law: Roy and Maxine Whaley, Butler, one daughter-in-law: Robin Swinson, Butler, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three sisters: Ruby Elliott, Margie Pearson, Judy Mick, all of Elizabethton, two brothers: Fredrick Carroll Ward, Elizabethton and Ed Ward, Gulf Port, MS and special friends: Bart and Susie Smith, Butler, Judy Vines, Elizabethton and Timothy Clawson, Butler. Elliott on November 8, 1996; a son, John Donovan Elliott; three grandchildren, Cassie Elliott, John Elliott, Jr., and Gary Lynn Elliott; sisters, Beatrice Whaley and Louise Raines; an infant sister and an infant brother; four brothers, Frank, Tom, Ira, and Edward Ward.

    Mrs. Elliott was retired from the Johnson City Medical Center as and LPN, where she had served for nineteen years. She was a member of Little Milligan Baptist Church and loved gardening, flowers, and being with her grandchildren and her dogs.

    Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Brenda Elliott, Elizabethton; three sons, Richard Elliott and wife Linda, Johnson City; Gerald Elliott and wife Becky, High Springs, FL; and Keith Elliott and wife Robin, Elizabethton; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Elliott, Elizabethton; one brother, Fredrick Ward and wife Denise, Elizabethton; two sisters, Marjorie Pearson and Judy Mick and husband Bruce, all of Elizabethton; eight grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; and four special friends, Jan Williams, Tammy Winters, Patricia Ward, and Tom Ward.

    ELIZABETHTON — Ira M. Ward, 77, 110 King St., Elizabethton, died Sunday, April 17, 2005 at his residence. A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late Clayton and Mary Elizabeth Rainbolt Ward. He had lived a number of years in Carter County. He was retired member of the Raytheon Coporation of Bristol. Mr. Ward served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Elizabethton Elks Lodge. He was a member and Past Worshipful Master of the Hampton Masonic Lodge #750. Mr. Ward was a former member of the Carter County Civil Service Board. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth Ward, a sister, Louise Rains and two brothers, Frank and Tom Ward. He was of the Baptist Faith. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Oliver Ward; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Steve Chambers, Elizabethton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim C. and Joan Ward, and Rex and Crystal Ward, all of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Marinda and Matthew Lovelace, Beth Whitehead, Alex Chambers and Brianna Ward; three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Jada Whitehead and Ryan Peterson; four sisters, Beatrice Whaley, Butler, Ruby Elliott, Marjorie Pearson and Judy Micks, all of Elizabethton; two brothers, Fred C. Ward, Elizabethton and Edward Ward, Gulfport, Mississippi. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005 in the National Cemetary, Mountain Home, with the Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiating. Burial will follow the service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Douglas Pearson; one son, Ken Pearson; four brothers, Tom, Frank, Ira, and Ed Ward; three sisters, Louise, Ruby and Bea; and three infant siblings.

    Mrs. Pearson had worked in the cafeteria at Siam Elementary and was a member of Siam Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and "loving her grandchildren."

    He served our military in the U.S. Marine Corp proudly in combat and everyday life. Dad was quick to speak his mind but if it came from his heart you knew it. If you entered our home you knew that you were family.
    If it were not for the loving care of Dr. Thad Carter and our precious MHG Surgery Outpatient Staff Nurses the past six years could have been worse. We will miss our drill instructor!

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Mary Elizabeth Ward; three sisters, five brothers; and a great-grandson, Mikey.

    He is survived by the most precious sacrificing woman on earth his wife, (our Mom), Patricia Ann Ward. He leaves four children, Janet Stewart (Roxy) of Saucier, James E. Ward, Jr. (Renee) of Yazoo City, Tambra Winters of Gulfport, Cheryl Lowman (Robert) of Pass Christian. The treasures of his life were his11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and the 3 great great-grandchildren that he left behind. He is also survived by 3 sisters, Ruby Elliott, Marjorie Pearson, Judy Mick, and a brother, Frederick Ward, all of Elizabethton, TN.

    Fredric "Cog" Carroll Ward, age 76, of Elizabethton, Tennessee passed away on September 9, 2019 following an extended illness. Fredric was a native of Carter County and was a son of the late Clayton and Elizabeth Ward.

    He was a 1964 graduate of Hampton High School. During his time in high school, he enjoyed running the half mile, one mile and two mile race which he received many ribbons for. He served in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1967 and was stationed in Vietnam, Korea, Japan and Okinawa.

    He worked as a welder and worked in a nuclear plant for many years and later became owner operator of a tractor trailer rig working with different companies throughout the United States doing long hauls. He helped establish the Carter County Hunting and Fishing Club. He was an avid hunter, an avid race fan and a craftsman, working with wood, making turkey calls, eagles, jewelry boxes and walking canes. He also loved to read western books including Civil War books.

    He attended Sims Hill Christian Church as often as his health permitted him to. He always said, "You need prayers? This church will always pray for you!" The church family meant a lot to him.

    In addition to his parents, Clayton and Elizabeth Ward, he was preceded in death by his five sisters: Beatrice Whaley, Ruby Elliott, Marjorie "Margie" Pearson, Louise Raines and Judy "Amanda" Mick; four brothers: Tom Ward, Frank Ward, Ira Ward, Edward Ward, and three siblings who died at birth: Mary, Lemis, and Isaac Ward.

    Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 39 years, Denise G. Ward; three children from a previous marriage: Patrick C. Ward and wife Casey, of Dunn, NC, Brian S. Ward and wife, Tara, of Elizabethton, TN, and Chris E. Ward, of Dunn, NC, six grandchildren, Krista L. Bowling and husband Cody, of Elizabethton, Clark Clancy, Kelsey Clancy, Rebecca Clancy, Jacob Smith and Caleb Allen, all from North Carolina; five great grandchildren: Jerimiah A. Bowling, Aubrey C. Bowling, Ava C. Bowling, Ainsley C. Bowling and Ryan T. Bowling, of Elizabethton, TN; sister-in-law, Patricia Ward, of Gulfport, Mississippi; and many nephews and nieces.

    A service to honor the life of Fredric "Cog" Carroll Ward will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Sims Hill Christian Church with Pastor Bret Jones, officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service on Thursday or at the residence at other times.

    The graveside service will follow the funeral service in the Hamby Cemetery in Fish Springs with Pastor Bret Jones, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.     Rev. Raleigh Mack Arnold Sr., age 78, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went on to be with the Lord Thursday, June 20, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born August 21, 1940 in Mountain City, Johnson County, TN to the late Raleigh Duff Arnold and Nellie Rhea Tester Arnold. In addition to his parents Mack was preceded in death by a baby sister Alice.

    Mack was a pastor for 33 years at the Porters Grove Baptist Church in Conowingo, MD where he retired. After he retired he returned to Mountain City, TN where he did pulpit fill-ins and revivals for the remainder of his life. He was in the pulpit filling in at Antioch Baptist 2 weeks prior to his death. He loved the Lord, his family and was well respected. Mack loved to fish, hunt and enjoyed Ginseng and wild egg hunting as well. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten or equaled. In his ministry there were over 2,000 souls saved.

    Those left to cherish his memories included his wife of 59 years, JoAnn Parish Arnold, son, Mack Arnold, Jr. and wife Mary, grandsons, Justin Arnold and wife Josie and Luke Arnold, great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Arnold, great-grandsons, James Arnold and John Arnold, sisters, Mary Bishop and husband Joe and Phyllis Anglemeyer, brothers, Jack Arnold and wife Fern, Johnny Arnold and wife Teresa and Jett Arnold.

    The family will receive friends on Saturday June 22, 2019 from 3-5:00 p.m. at Central Baptist Church with the funeral service to follow at 5:00 p.m. with Rev.     Laura loved her family and friends. She enjoyed get togethers and time spent with her family. Laura loved to raise flowers, work in her garden and mow her own yard. She was a very independent woman who worked hard all her life.
    Laura was a member of Mountain City Church of Christ.

    Doran Hadley Swift Sr., age 89, passed away on October 19, 2021 at his home. Doran was born on June 22, 1932 to the late Lola Swift Holloway in Johnson County. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his grandparents who raised him, David Hamilton Swift and Alice Arnold Swift; his son, Doran Swift “Doc”; grandson, Dokken Swift and brother, John Holloway.

    Doran was born on June 22, 1932 in Johnson County, Tennessee and attended Dewey School and graduated from Johnson County High School in 1951. After graduating from high school, Doran enlisted into the United States Airforce. He completed his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas then attended A&M College in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, studying to be a Vehicle Motorized Equipment Electrician. He spent the remainder of his service working on electrical systems at the Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City Florida. During this time, he married Emogene Combs on December 10, 1953 in Mountain City, Tennessee. He was honorably discharged in 1955, but continued to serve in the Reserves for 4 years.

    Doran returned to Johnson County in 1955 to care for his grandmother and grandfather who raised him. During this time he worked for Summers & Taylor Construction Company. After obtaining his electrician license from Washington County Technical School, he worked as an electrician and an analyst planner for Burlington Industries for twenty years. Doran also served as a volunteer for the Johnson County Rescue Squad for fifteen years and was a member of the Johnson County Chamber of Commerce for many years.

    Doran learned to work on the farm at an early age and loved riding and working with horses. Doran was instrumental in starting the Johnson County Trail Riders Club and was a charter member. He volunteered for several years working with kids in the 4-H Horse club and 4-H Horse Show. He also worked with others to sponsor trail rides, wagon trains and help coordinate their participation in local parades and events. His love for horses took him to many ranches over the years, some including the Marriott Corporation Ranch in Front Royal, Virginia where he was the manager of their trail riding division and the Virginia Beef Company where he worked to ride and round up cattle for shipments. Later He worked with roundups at the Haythorne Land & Cattle Company in Ogallala, Nebraska. Doran continued his love for farming throughout his life. There weren’t many days when you wouldn’t see him out working on his tractor or out around his own farm tending to animals, fixing fences or working in his garden.

    Doran was a member of the Mountain City Presbyterian Church. He was an Elder of the Church and served as the Chairman of the Board of Deacons for several years. He enjoyed attending church and spending time with the members of his church. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, and especially loved seeing his grandkids and great grands. His biggest joy was sharing his love of horses by taking them for rides on his horses, ponies, and pony carts. Later on, it was on his tractor, wagon hooked to the lawnmower and even his scooter around the farm. Doran also enjoyed watching RFD-TV and napping in his recliner.

    Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of nearly 68 years, Emogene Swift; daughter, Pam Hacker; sisters, Virginia Manuel, Anni Skewes (Mike), Mae Matheson, Faye Phillipppi, June Thomas (Coleman Brown); grandchildren, Sarah Swift Jennings (Mark), Abigail Hacker, and Jesse Hacker; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Taylor, Zoey, Mckenzie, and Lucas; several nieces, nephews, special friends and caregiver, Nancy Holman.

    The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22, 2021 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. with Pastors Jim Swoager and Daryl Cox officiating. Special music will be provided by Randy Dandurand.     Leita Faye Phillippi, age 72, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, May 28, 2022. She was born on May 16, 1950, the second of a set of twins (Neita Mae) to Roy M. Holloway and Lola (Toad) Swift Holloway.

    Faye was married to her childhood sweetheart, Harold Phillippi for 51 years before he was deceased on October 12, 2018.

    She was also predeceased by her parents, her brothers, Doran Swift and John Holloway, and her in-laws, Edwin G. “Tuck” and Virginia Phillippi.

    Faye was a faithful member of Bethany Baptist Church where she was a member of the Good News Sunday School class.

    She is survived by two daughters, Lisa Clawson (special friend Roy Bennett) and Jaycee Clawson: two grandsons, Ethan and Josh Clawson. Also surviving are four sisters, Jenny Johnson Manuel, Ann Skewes (Mike), Mae Matheson and June Thomas, in addition to a brother-in-law, Roby Phillippi and two sisters-in-law, Carol Phillippi and Emogene Swift. Faye also had several nieces and nephews and many, many special friends.

    Funeral services for Faye will be conducted at 2 pm on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 in the Charles B. Hux Chapel of Hux Lipford Funeral Home with Dr. Gale Hartley officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 pm prior the service. The graveside service will follow at the Brookshire Cemetery.

    ELIZABETHTON - Jacquelyn “Jackie” McKinney, 79, went to her Heavenly Home on Friday, December 9, 2022.

    Jackie was born on May 1, 1943 in Johnson County, TN to Rod and June Ward Swift. She was a member of Valley Forge United Methodist Church. Jackie was in the food service at Elizabethton School System. Jackie was a loving wife and loved her family.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, Jeff McKinney and Mike McKinney, brother, Mack Swift.

    Jackie is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Alvin E. McKinney; brother, Keith Swift; several nieces and nephews.

    A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, December 12, 2022 at Happy Valley Cemetery with Dr. Steve Castle officiating.

    Timothy Eugene “Peanut” Swift, age 72, of Mountain City, TN, passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born May 23, 1950, to the late Bonnie Ethel Swift.

    Peanut loved riding horses and gardening. He also enjoyed mowing and would do anything to help anyone out. Peanut worked on the farm for many years and worked at Tri-State Growers for about 12 years. He also worked at Leco and Burlington for a short while. He loved most working on the farm and worked for Glen and Wayne Ward and also Tommy Jack Shoun.

    Those left to cherish his memories include his sister, Margaret Tugman, and husband Bill; nieces, Tracey Safford (Billy), and Whitney Estep (Josh); nephew, Bo Fritts (Angie); great nieces, Daryl-Hannah Vines Addison, and Harper Estep; great-nephews, Hunter Vines (Morgan), Mason Estep, Jacob Harrington, Brady Fritts; several cousins and friends.

    The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 with Pastor John Hammett and Danny Cullop officiating. The graveside service and burial will follow the funeral from the Wilson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Josh Estep, Billy Safford, Bo Fritts, and Brady Fritts. Honorary pallbearers are John Bishop, Jim Davis, Dearl Swift, Tommy Jack Shoun, Wayne Ward, and all the employees of Tri-State Growers Co-op.
