Mrs. Julia Whitehead Miller, 86, Ivy Hall Nursing Home, formerly of Courtyard Apartments, Elizabethton, died Friday, June 27, 2003, at Ivy Hall.
Mrs. Miller was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Isaac and Cecilia Hughes Whitehead. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Edgar Miller; three brothers; three sisters; a grandson, David Paul Miller; a great-granddaughter, Goldie G. Miller; and her special friend, Sarah Williams.
Mrs. Miller was a member of Valley Forge House of Prayer. She was a longtime member of WOTM No. 1606.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie R. and Barbara Miller, Elizabethton, and James E. and Stony Miller, Butler; three daughters, Mildred Pittman and Margaret Burchett, both of Indiana, and Barbara Cable, Elizabethton; and a sister, Arizona Hopson, Hampton. Thirteen grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive.Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Isaac Taylor "Ike" and Cecie Hughes Whitehead. She was a retired employee in the dietary department of the Hillview Health Care Center. She was a member of the Pearce's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, but attended Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Donnie Hopson; five sisters, Julie Miller, Celia Simerly, Nancy Jeanette Hill, Hattie Jane Whitehead and Virginia Kistner; and by seven brothers, Everett, Elmer, Henry Allen, William Earl, Frank Stewart, Clarence and John A. Whitehead. "Mrs. Hopson was the last surviving granddaughter of John and Nancy Snyder Whitehead."

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Madlyn and Gary Smith, Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Garry and Carol Hopson, Hampton; 10 grandchildren, Melissa Orman, Garry "Shannon" Hopson, Rachel Tingle, Heather Garrison, Brian Hopson, Donna Hopson, Johnnie Wilson, Jessica Buckles, Trina and Belinda; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dave Morgan officiating. The eulogy will be given by Justin Buckles. ELIZABETHTON - Mrs. Rhoda Cates Hyder, 99, 122 Old Stateline Road, Elizabethton, TN, died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at her residence.

A native of Carter County, TN, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Sallie Whitehead Cates.

Mrs. Hyder retired as a teacher from Valley Forge Elementary School. Mrs. Hyder has been a valuable resident of Carter County for her entire life and was still an active member of the church she grew up in, Doe River Baptist Church. She has evinced her deep faith in a variety of important church jobs, as the Training Union Director, as a tireless worker with youth, as Supervisor of the Watauga Lodge of the Watauga Baptist Association, and as Director of the Summer Goodwill Center for the Watauga Baptist Association.

Mrs. Hyder served expertly on the first Tennessee Advisory Council on Aging and was later appointed by Governor Lamar Alexander to the Tennessee Commission on Aging (1981-1990). She belonged to the Roan Mountain Garden Club, the Hampton Garden Club, the ZETA, IOTA Chapter of East Tennessee State University, the Roan Mountain Eastern Star, the Carter County / Elizabethton Senior Citizens, the Elizabethton Woman's Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She has also served admirably as President of the Carter County PTA Council and the Valley Forge PTA, was a lifetime member of the Tennessee Parent Teachers Association, served as President of the Carter County Retired Teachers Association and served diligently on the Elizabethton Public Library Board of Directors. In each of these capacities, she has reflected the finest traditions of the Volunteer State.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hyder was preceded in death by her husband, Nat E. Hyder Sr., May 10, 1970; a daughter, June Evelyn Walsh, January 2003; a grandson, Paul Marshall Hyder; a great-grandson, Marine Lance Corp. Nason Michael Hopkins; two sisters, Carrie Street and Pearl Roberts; four brothers, Jim Cates, John Cates, William Cates and Paul Cates; and a special friend, Dr. Harley Fite.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Nat Edens Hyder Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, Johnson City, TN; a daughter, Dr. Lois Gretchen Fortune and her husband, David Lee, Brasilia, Brazil; twelve grandchildren; twenty-nine great- grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Several nieces and nephews and very special friends, Martha Bunton Query, Unicoi, TN, and Nancy Garland, Elizabethton, TN, also survive.

Mrs. Margaret Stephens Manning, age 91, of Elizabethton, TN, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late William Warren (W.W.) and Celia Belle Teague Stephens. Mrs. Manning had built airplanes for the U.S. Navy and also worked at Yates Remnant Shop for twenty years. She enjoyed sewing and crafts. Mrs. Manning was a member of First Christian Church, Elizabethton, and the Fidelis Sunday School Class at First Christian Church. She worked in the Church nursery for several years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Cartha Chesser, Oscar Stephens, Ida Pate, William Stephens, Clara Kyte, Laura Kyte, Harold Stephens, Hazel Vanhuss, John Stephens, and an infant sister, Mary Ruth Stephens. Survivors include her husband of fifty-nine years, Paul T. Manning, of the home; a daughter, Paula Manning, Elizabethton; a grandson, Marc Gibson and wife, Rachel, Charlotte, NC; a great-grandson, Ethan Gibson, Charlotte, NC; and special friends, Teresa Norris, Lanny Norris, Whitney Norris, Sara, Laban and Rilyn Propst and Randy and Patsy Tadlock. Mr. Teague died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998 at Masters Health Care Center in Algood.

He was born March 30, 1918 in Johnson City to the late Oscar Lee and Laura Mae Sammons Teague. He was a retired maintenance man and a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII.

His family includes daughter Helen Ball of Cookeville; son Harry Teague of Middletown, Ohio; two step daughters, Diane Koss of Canton, Mich., and Bevery Siekierka of Garden City, Mich.; three granddaughters, Tammy Bass of Cookeville, Raylene Daniels of Nashville, and Tina Teague of New York City, New York.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Davis Teague.

Jasper James "Jake" Teague, 82, Blountville, Tennessee passed away Saturday, June 27, 2015 in the Bristol Regional Hospital.
He was born on September 18, 1932 in the Happy Valley Section of Carter County the youngest child of Oscar Lee & Laura Mae Sammons Teague.
He was a graduate of Mary Hughes High School, Piney Flats. He was a retired Staff Sgt. From the Missile Command of the United States Army and was a Korean War Veteran.
He moved from St. Matthews, South Carolina to Blountville last July. He was of the Free Will Baptist Faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters: Verna Grace Dykes and Tina Nelma Woods both of Johnson City and his brothers: Jesse Dayton Teague of Livonia, Michigan, Everette Kyle Teague, Johnson City, Albert Brice Teague of Cleveland, Ohio and Orville Curtis Teague of Taylor, Michigan.
He is survived by one sister-in-law: Kate Teague of Johnson City and a host of nieces & nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2015 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bill Greer officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain Home National Cemetery at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday.

ROAN MOUNTAIN - June Odom Whitehead, 90, Roan Mountain, passed away at the Waters of Roan Highlands on Sunday January 19, 2020.

June was the daughter of the late Thomas and Laura Barnett Odom. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Byrl Whitehead, two daughters, Sherrye Reine and Yvonne Whitehead and one granddaughter, Beth Reine Holloway. She was also preceded by one sister, Florence Odom Stevens and two brothers, Ford and Clyde Odom.

June was a homemaker and worked with the Girl Scouts in Hampton, TN and Taylor, MI for 14 years. June was a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church where she worked with the youth. In past years she was a member of Sunset Freewill Baptist Church where she taught the Ladies Sunday School Class.

She is survived by a grandson, Brett Reine and wife Rebecca Reine of Jacksonville, NC and six great grandchildren, Logan Reine, Sloane Reine, Hunter Reine, Isabel Reine, Brick David Reine and Thomas Holloway. She is also survived by her caregivers and son-on-law, Tom Reine and wife Vanessa Reine. There are several nieces and nephews and one special niece Delores Honeycutt.

Funeral Services for June Whitehead will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 25 at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gary Whitehead officiating. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Jean Irick & Tom Reine. Pallbearers will be selected from family members.

Mr. Whitehead was a native of Hampton and a son of the late Henry and Lucy Morton Whitehead. He was also preceded in death by a brother.
Mr. Whitehead was a retired store room clerk at North American Rayon Corporation. He was a member and deacon of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church and a member of Hampton Masonic Lodge #750. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a Disabled Veteran.

in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Henry A. and Lucy Morton Whitehead. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church and was a retired nurse.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James "Black" Johnson, and three brothers, Babe Whitehead, Lester Whitehead and Narvel Whitehead.

JOHNSON CITY - Ed Whitehead, 90. Johnson City, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021 at the Hillview Health Center. He was born December 24, 1930, in Hampton to the late Henry & Lucy Morton Whitehead. He was a 1949 graduate of Hampton High School. Ed served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired truck driver. He formerly worked at ETWNC and Jones Truck Line. He loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Narvel & Louis Whitehead and two sisters: Crystal Johnson and Hazel Malone.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years: Shirley Simerly Whitehead. One Daughter & Son-In-Law: Deborah & David Shankle of Johnson City. Two Grandchildren: David E. (Victoria) Shankle and Daniel (Ashley) Shankle. Three Great Grandchildren: David R., Emma and Edmund. Several nieces & nephews.

HAMPTON - Louis Whitehead, 80, Hampton, passed away peacefully Friday, April 28, 2017 at his residence with his family by his side.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Henry A. & Lucy Morton Whitehead. Louis was a 1955 graduate of Hampton High School and attended East Tennessee State College. He served in the United States Army. He was a retired Tool & Die Maker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Navel Whitehead, Two Sisters: Crystal Johnson and Hazel Malone and two infant brothers. Survivors include his wife of 56 years: Dale Roberts Whitehead. Juanita Whitehead Taylor, 91, of Elizabethton, passed from this life to her eternal life on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, following a lengthy illness. Juanita was born on November 14, 1927 to the late Frank Stuart and Jennie Morton Whitehead. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Fate Whitehead, and an infant sister, Ethel.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 68 years, Walter Taylor, and daughters, Marlene (Richard) Good and Donna (Dan) Schumaier; her grandsons, John (Ketasha) Goodwin and Jordan Grindstaff; three great-grandchildren, Graham, Gracen and Gretchen Goodwin; along with several nieces and nephews.
Juanita was a member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. She loved being outdoors and was happiest in her garden or yard. She loved animals and had several special pets through the years. She also loved feeding the birds and watching and identifying them.

Rod Whitehead, 83, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, at his home on November 5, 2021. Born on the 5th of November 1938 at Tiger Creek to Betty Jo Lyons Whitehead and Everett Whitehead, Rod was well-travelled, but lived most of his life in upper East Tennessee with his family. A fierce patriot and leader amongst men, he proudly served 27 years in the military, and was a Gulf War veteran. He was also the State Electrical Inspector for Tennessee for 40 years and was well known and respected throughout the region.
Rod Whitehead — a man of impact and purpose — will be remembered for many things, but mainly he will be remembered for the strength of his character, his presence, courage, generosity, kindness, warmth, directness, loyalty, humour, and unwavering values. He inspired those around him, freely offering his wisdom and encouragement. One of his favourite sayings was: ‘Everything has a season’. For his part, he lived four full seasons, each of which was blessed by the richness of God’s love, as well as that of his many family members and friends.
Rod is survived by his wife, Trena G. Whitehead, of 59 years; his two daughters, Wendy Whitehead and Amy R. Whitehead; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Diane Bishop; and three brothers, James (Jimmy), Philip, and Dillard. A loving, protective, and supportive husband, father, friend, brother, cousin, brother-in-law, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather, Rod Whitehead will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Phillip Wayne Whitehead, 76, of Elizabethton, passed away on March 17, 2022 at Johnson City Medical Center after a long battle with diabetes and dementia.
Phillip was a native of Carter County and a graduate of Elizabethton High School, Class of 1964. He was the son of the late Everett and Betty Jo Lyons Whitehead.
Phillip was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Rod.
Survivors include his brothers, James “Jimmy” and wife Reba, and Dillard and wife Kathy; his sister, Diane Bishop and husband Jim; and a sister-in-law, Trena.
Phillip served with the United States Army successfully completing a Wheel and Track Vehicle Course at Fort Knox, Ky. He served in Germany at the rank of E5 and was honorably discharged in 1968. After his military service, he attended ETSU and Steed College majoring in Business, Business Law as well as Finance and Principles of Management.
There will be a private family service with interment to follow in the Whitehead Family Cemetery.

PENSACOLA, FL - Charles Elmer Whitehead, 82, Pensacola, Florida passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022 at his residence. He was born December 20, 1939 in Hampton, Tenn. To the late Elmer & Effie Holtzsclaw Whitehead. He was a graduate of Hampton High School and East Tennessee State University. Charles retired from the United States Navy after 21 years of service. He was retired as Environmental Services Director of Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He had lived in Florida since 2003. He was a member of the Fil-Am. He was a member of the Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Janet McCorkle.
Survivors include his wife: Gracita Awa-Ao Whitehead. One Daughter: Gracita (Sharli) Williams and husband Fred, Pensacola, Florida. Janet Bernice Whitehead McCorkle, 69, of Martinez, Ga., passed away Monday, June 20, 2016, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born October 13, 1946 in Hampton, Tenn., to the late Elmer and Effie Holtzsclaw Whitehead.
Janet had lived in Florida and Georgia most of her life. In earlier years, she attended Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church in Hampton.

Judy Ann Cates Honeycutt, 68, of Hampton, beloved wife of Gilbert Honeycutt, entered into Heaven’s portals on September 24, 2015 after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Hampton, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late William and Zemma Gouge Cates. She had endured almost 40 years of medical problems including surviving five open heart surgeries and breast cancer. Nonetheless, she was a fighter who was determined to live her life to the fullest.

She taught school at Midway, Cloudland, and Hampton Elementary for twenty-three years before being directed to retire by her doctors.

She was a member of the Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church where she was the pianist for twenty-five years before joining the First Baptist Church of Elizabethton in 2001. She loved attending her Sunday school class, The Messengers, and singing in the Sanctuary and Senior Choirs.

Judy took great pleasure in gardening and tending to her flowers. She enjoyed travelling and had visited Mexico, Canada, and many states. She especially delighted in a recent family trip to Hawaii. Judy and Gilbert served as information desk volunteers for Mountain States hospital for several years making many friends.

Her greatest joy was her family and she adored spending time with them, whether hosting a large holiday party, going out to eat or simply talking on the phone.

Those left to cherish her memory, in addition to her husband of 46 years, include her children, daughter, Nancy Carol Honeycutt, Los Angeles, California and son, Mark Edward Honeycutt and wife Kara, Jonesborough. She also is survived by her grandchildren, the pride of her life, Karly Rae-Ann Honeycutt and Hudson Mark Honeycutt. Her siblings include one brother, William Cates, Jr. and wife Sally, Atlanta, Georgia and three sisters, Thelma Jaynes, Hampton, Doris and Garland James, Unicoi, and Linda Joy and Ben Williams, Elizabethton. She is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Priscilla Rouse and her husband Robert, Bristol, Tennessee and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express thanks to all those who helped during Judy’s extended illness including Dr. Rachel Monderer, and the staff of Johnson City Medical Center and Quillen Rehabilitation Hospital.

JOHNSON CITY - Dr. Nat Edens "Ed" Hyder, Jr. M.D., 86, Johnson City, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Pine Ridge Care & Rehab Center. Dr. Hyder was born in Hampton on March 14, 1929. He started high school at Hampton High School and graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1946. He attended Milligan College before joining the Army in June of 1947 after serving as a clerk and medic in the army he enrolled at East Tennessee State College to earn a B.S. degree in Chemistry. He also certified to teach at that time. He went on to attend and graduate from University of Tennessee College of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine Degree in June of 1954.

Dr. Hyder practiced medicine until 2009. He served in Knoxville, TN, Tazewell, VA, Lallie Kemp Charity Hospital in Louisiana, worked in Medical Management of Radiation Accidents at Oak Ridge, also practicing in Chatom, AL, Erwin, TN, Johnson City, TN and with Rural Health Consortium at the Bluff City Clinic and his last several years at the Dry Creek Clinic in Erwin, TN.

During his career Dr. Hyder also served several communities, the State of Tennessee and his nation in many capacities. He was a longtime Railroad Physician with CSX. He served as a Nuclear Medical Consultant and Plant Physician at Nuclear Fuel Services at various times from 1970 until 1992.

He has served as president of the Erwin Civitan Club, the Erwin Community Chest and United Way, as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Erwin YMCA. He is a member of Mountain View Baptist Church and has also served as Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Chatom, AL; First Christian Church in Erwin and the First Baptist Church in Erwin

In 1968 Dr. Hyder volunteered through a program with the American Medical Association to go to Vietnam as a civilian doctor treating Vietnamese civilians alongside Vietnamese nurses. There he performed many surgeries as he also treated the wounded. It was also a common occurrence that at night he would have to leave his quarters and go to the bunkers because of mortar attacks.

Dr. Hyder has served in many other capacities. In 1971 he was appointed by the Governor to the Tennessee Public Health Council, serving as secretary in 1976 and 1977. He was president of the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians in 1972. In 1974 he was named Family Physician of the Year for the state of Tennessee. He is a past delegate to the AMA. He served as president of the Tennessee Medical Association in 1983.

Dr. Hyder has also served in various positions with the James H. Quillen College of Medicine through ETSU; he stood as Acting Director of the Johnson City Family Practice Residency Program, a member of the Dean's Council and Admissions Committee, Associate Professor in the Department of Family Practice and assistant Dean and Director of Medical Education at the Johnson City Medical Center.

In addition to his community support Dr. Hyder has served his country through the military in several capacities. In 1975 he joined the Medical Corps in the United States Army Reserve. He was promoted to Colonel in 1978. He became Commander of the 912th Combat Support Hospital in 1982. In 1985 he became the Commander of the 332nd Medical Brigade, leading over 150 Army Reserve Units in the USA. Before retiring he served as commander over 377th Combat Support Hospital and then transferred to 662 Medical Detachment of the National Guard. Though he retired from the National Guard in 1995 he later joined the National Defense Force Service Command, a part of Homeland Security. Here he has served as Brigadier General, Major General and Lieutenant General.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Hyder was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Hurst Hyder; one son, Paul Marshall Hyder; two grandsons, Nason Michael Hopkins and J. Keith Hyder; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Hyder and a sister, June Evelyn Hyder Walsh.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Gretchen E. Byrd and her husband, Travis S. Byrd; sons, Nat E. Hyder, III and his wife Sherri, Michael Allen Hyder and his wife Robin; grandchildren, Ashley Elizabeth Garst and her husband Chris, Nathaniel E. Farris Orlean Whitehead Nave, 82, Elizabethton, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was born in the Tiger Valley Community on November 30, 1939. She was a wonderful daughter to the late Carmen and Bonnie Oxendine Whitehead.
Farris was the world’s best caretaker, baby sitter and homemaker. She loved to work with her hands in the garden and flowers and loved to can her vegetables. She was of the Free Will Baptist Faith and attended Sunset Free Will Baptist Church, when she was well.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Lee Nave; a daughter, Melissa Richardson; and a sister, Wilma Jean Lewis.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Whitson and husband Brad; two grandchildren, Rachel Beth Richardson Laws and Nathan Whitson and wife Laura; her sweet great-grandchildren, Brianna Jenkins and husband Dustin and Bryson Laws; one sister, Janice Sue Bowen; her son-in-law, Rev. Terry Richardson; her special companion, “Molly”; and her special friends, Dean Guinn, Linda Roberts, Barbara Hardin, Lillie Mae Stevens and Mary Forbes.
A Service to Celebrate the Life of Farris Nave will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Terry Richardson officiating. HAMPTON — Sammie W. Tolley, 81, Hampton, passed away Monday October 11, 2010, in the Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was a Roan Mountain native. Sammie was a graduate of Cloudland High School class of 1947 also attended Milligan College and attained certification in music, East Tennessee State University with a BS Degree in Regular & Special Education and the University of Tennessee with a Counseling Certification.

Sammie was a teacher, counselor and administrator in the Carter County School System for 42 years.

She was a former member of the First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, and was presently a member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her beloved and cherished granddaughter, Rachel Mikell Clawson; father & mother, John L. and Geneva Collins Whitehead; sisters: Norma Love Kuntz and Billy Rose, a brother: Jack Whitehead; her father & mother-in-law: Mr & Mrs Charley Tolley; her brothers-in-law: Paul Tolley, Mack Tolley, Julius Tolley; and a sister-in-law: Leafie Payne.

Faye Hensley, age 95, of Elizabethton, entered the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

Faye was born in Carter County to the late Reece Hill and Hattie Street Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Hensley; a sister, Madge Campbell; her brothers-in-law, Darrell Campbell, James M. Hensley, Jr. and Paul Treadway; and a sister-in-law, Helen Hensley.

She attended Hampton High School and was the oldest member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. Faye was lovingly known as the "Dumpling Lady" for her wonderful chicken and dumplings.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Tony Hensley and wife Christine, and Mike Hensley and wife Kim; one grandson, Gary Scott Hensley and his wife, Theresa; great grandchildren, Cody Hensley and Dustin Hensley; Step great grandsons, Brent McClain and wife Heather, Cody Honeycutt and wife Nichole; step great grandchildren, Kaylee Honeycutt, Jayda McClain; one great great grandson, Cameron Hensley; and a sister-in-law, M. Ivory Hill Lewis, age 88, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at her residence.

Ivory was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Dana and Ethel Connie Lacey Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Raymond Keith Lewis, Sr. on December 16, 2007; a daughter, Linda Ivory Ramsey on May 2, 2009; a grandson, Wayne Davis II; a son-in-law, Wayne Davis; a half sister, Sally Pierce; and a half brother, Bill Hill.

Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker, but along with her husband, had previously owned and operated Lewis' Service Station. She was a member of Union Baptist Church and was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Davis, of Hampton and Glenna Morton, of Elizabethton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ray Lewis, Jr. and wife Maxine and "Randy" Lewis and wife Eddie, all of Elizabethton, and Rex Lewis and wife Angela, Johnson City; six grandchildren, Wendi Kasting and husband Chris, Johnson City, John Ramsey, Jr. and wife Christa, Elizabethton, Ronnie Heaton, Jr. and wife Felicia, Elizabethton, Summer Morton, Ria Davis and Jessica Lindsey, all of Johnson City; ten great grandchildren; three half sisters, Mary Shultz and husband Bill, Lenoir City, Susie Moody and husband Bob, Butler, and Jane Lyons, Elizabethton; and two half brothers, Herman Hill and wife Kay, and Johnny Hill and wife Freda, all of Hampton. Her-man was a na-tive of Carter County and was a son of the late Dana and Retta Collins Hill. In ad-di-tion to his par-ents, he was pre-ceded in death by a brother, Bill Hill; three sis-ters, Sally Pierce, Ivory Lewis and Mil-dred Hill; and two neph-ews, Neil Moody and Robert Stoc-ton.
Mr. Hill re-tired from High-way's In-cor-po-rated, where he held var-i-ous man-age-ment roles. He was of the Free Will Bap-tist faith and en-joyed gar-den-ing. He was an ex-pert in lo-cal his-tory and en-joyed ge-ne-al-ogy. Her-man was a very giv-ing and self-less per-son, his great-est joy was spend-ing time with his grand-chil-dren.

Mary Evelyn Hill Shultz "Pood," 73, of Lenoir City, Tenn., passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2019, after a three year battle with cancer. Mary was born in Banner Elk, N.C., on November 6, 1946 to the late Retta Collins Hill and Dana Hill. Mary was predeceased by her two brothers, Herman Hill and Bill Hill; sister, Sallie Hill Pierce; two half sisters, Mildred Hill and Ivory Lewis; and nephew, Robert Neil Moody.
Mary grew up in Hampton, Tenn., and graduated from Hampton High School. She married her husband, W.H. Shultz Jr. "Bill," on October 6, 1966. They had recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. Mary lived in Elizabethton, Tenn., with her husband and children for over 25 years. During that time she worked at East Tennessee Undergarment. In 1990, Mary and Bill moved to Lenoir City, Tenn., where she took a job with TRW Koyo in Vonore, Tenn. She worked there until her retirement in 1995.
Mary's retirement years were spent loving on her family. She was a wonderful cook, loved vacations on the sandy Gulf Coast beaches and enjoyed every moment she could with her husband, children and grandchildren. Their activities and being "mamaw" gave her so much pride and joy. She was a selfless woman who never met a stranger and loved doing things for others.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband Bill; her daughter, Cynthia Shultz Noles (Bruce); her son, W.H. Shultz III "Billy"; and grandchildren, Victoria Anne Noles, William Taylor Shultz and Madison Bailey Shultz, all of Lenoir City, Tenn. She is also survived by a brother, John Hill (Frieda), and two sisters, Jane Lyons and Susie Moody (Bob). She is also blessed by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins left to remember her.
Receiving of family and friends will be held from 1 until 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton, Tenn. Following receiving of family and friends, the funeral service will be conducted by Dr. Alan King at 2 p.m. The graveside service and internment will follow immediately at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends in attendance.
