ACCUSED OF THE SHOOTING was Henderson Garten, a guerrila under Capt. Philip Thurmond of Oak Hill, and Jefferson (Jeff) Bennett a strong Southern sympathizer. This all came on March 2nd as we buried Boude Bennett in the Bennett graveyard several miles back of Jumping Branch. A kinsman of Jeffers9n Bennett pointed out the homesite of the old Secessionist and told how he met an untimely end. When the Civil War was over, the report runs, "Tuck" Richmond and others returned, went up to Jeff Bennett's house and avenged the death of Samuel Richmond, Tuck's father. This they did by killing Jeff Bennett and his dog. An old grave mound was pointed out as the tomb of secessionist Jeff Bennett there in the ancestral burial ground of the generations of Bennetts. Only a dornick marks the grave.

Robert married Nancy Elizabeth Adkins about 1838 in Mercer County, , , Virginia. Nancy was born in 1816 in , Brunswick County, Virginia Colony, ; died on 27 Sep 1901 in Mercer County, , , West Virginia; was buried in Bennett Cemetery, , Summers County, West Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Mr. William Bennett died suddenly near his home on Monroe Draft, Irish Corner district this county, last Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1909, aged 65 years.
He had gone to the woods near his home to chop some wood, and a short time after was heard calling for help. He was found in a paralyzed condition, and died before he could be taken home.
Mr. Bennett was born in Summers county, but had lived at Hightop for the past thirty years. He is survived by his wife and eight children, namely: Mrs. William Honaker, of Caldwell;; John R. Bennett, of Fayette county; Wm. R. Bennett, of Pence Springs; Mrs. Charles Bennett, of Covington, Va.; Mrs. C. V. Holesapple, of Durbin; Mrs John Fury, of Seebert; Amos W. Bennett of Caldwell; and O. T. Bennett, of Alleghany county, Va.
Deceased was Confederate soldier in the civil war and a member of the Baptist church. Funeral service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. A. A. McGlelland, of Ronceverte, and his body was laid to rest in the Adwell graveyard.

Lewis Marshall Bennett was first married to Marinda Lane on September 18, 1878 in Summers County, WV. Marinda was the daughter of Charles and Mary Lane.

Until 2003, I was told that Charley DeLoach had married Sarah (Surrey) Lilly on 8 September 1927 supposedly in Hinton, West Virginia. On 9 May 2001, I received a letter stating that the above marriage did not take place in Hinton, WV. On 17 May 2003, Virgie Deloach stated that Charley did not marry Sarah Lilly, but he agreed to watch her children since she was going to prison for killing her husband. It is interesting that the children are boarding with Charley's mother, Margaret McCown in 1930.

On 28 August 2005, Edith Deloach Anderson confirmed that Sarah Lilly did beat her husband to death with a broom handle.

Mays) was born on 10 Jun 1875 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 5 Jan 1967 in Clintwood, , Dickenson County, Virginia; was buried in Phipps Cemetery, , Dickenson County, Virginia.
