    Survivors are four sons, Glenn of Shouns, Robert of Dalton, Ga., Howard of Elizabethton, and Paul of the home; four daughters, Mrs. Lucy Oliver and Mrs. Willene Phillips, both of Jonesboro, Mrs. Laura White of Elizabethton, and Mrs. Dorothy Wilson of Bristol; four brothers, Earl and Robert Fritts, both of Butler, Austin Fritts of Grandview, Wash., and Tom Fritts of Jefferson City; one sister, Mrs. Mary Alice Stansberry of Grandview, Wash.; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Rock Springs Baptist Church near Butler with Rev. D. S. Miller and Rev. Roby Stout officiating.
    Burial was in Fritts Cemetery.
    Hill Funeral Home in charge.

    JONESBOROUGH - Dorothy Virginia Tester Wilson, 93, Jonesborough passed away Sunday, October 10, 2021 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born April 24, 1928 in Mountain City to the late Smith & Ollie Fritts Tester. She had lived a number of years in Elizabethton before moving to Jonesborough in 2009 . She was retired from First Presbyterian Church, Johnson City as a Custodian. In earlier years she was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church, after moving to Jonesborough she become a member of West Hills Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister: Lucy Oliver and a brother: Paul Tester.
    Survivors include her sister: Mary W. White. One Niece: Vickie Cloyd, One Nephew: Elijah Cloyd. Two Great Nieces Annie Cloyd and Breanna Cloyd. A special friend: Janet Karneck.
    Graveside Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 14, 2021 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Daniel Shorder officiating. Active pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Thursday will be: Ray Oliver, Gene Hurt, Allen Hurt, Kenny Dickenson, Annie Cloyd and Elijah Cloud.

    Pansy Parlee Courtner, age 90, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, January 06, 2018 at the Watauga Medical Center. She was born on June 6, 1927 to the late Clyde and Susie Fritts Courtner. In addition to her parents, Pansy was preceded in death by daughter, Edith Poore; sister, Kate Courtner; brothers: Walt Courtner, Lloyd Courtner and Howard Courtner and great grandchild, Ronnie Clayton Mc-Call.

    Prior to her declining health, Pansy enjoyed working in her garden and flower beds. She always loved to sit on her porch and enjoy the outdoors and visit with family and friends. She was a member of Dewey Christian Church.

    Those left to cherish her memories include her children: Barbara Gentry and special friend, Gerald, Jean Oliver, Rosa Gentry and husband Frankie, Kathy Courtner and Sanford Courtner; sister, Violet Phillips; brother, Clarence Courtner; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

    Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at the Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with grandson, Pastor Shannon Courtner officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.

    Kate O. Courtner, age 81, of 955 R.D. Campbell Road, Butler, Tennessee passed away Friday, December 8, 2017 at the Mountain City Care Center. She was a daughter of the late Clyde Courtner who passed away in 1995 and her mother Susie Fritts Courtner who passed away in 1948. Ms. Courtner was a member of the Rock Springs Baptist Church.

    She was a homemaker who loved gardening. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers; Walt Courtner, Loyd Courtner, and Howard Courtner.

    Survivors include: three sons: Marvin Courtner, of the Home, I.G. Courtner, Butler, Tennessee and Kenneth Courtner and wife Vickie, Mountain City, Tennessee. two sisters: Violet Phillips of Butler, Tennessee Parlee Courtner, Mountain City, Tennessee and a brother Clarence Courtner, of Mountain City, Tennessee; ten grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

    A funeral service for Kate will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2017

    in the Charles B. Hux Chapel of Hux & Lipford Funeral Home the family will receive friends from 6 until 7 prior to the funeral service, with Rev. Shannon Courtner officiating.

    Pallbearers will be Donald Courtner, James Courtner, Tommy Courtner, and Eddie Dickens.

    Graveside Service will be held Friday, December 15, 2017 at 2 pm. in the Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

    HAMPTON - Von Austin Fritts, 79, Hampton passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018 in the Johnson City Medical after a brief illness.

    A native of Butler, he was a son of the late Robert Lee & Donnie Elkins Fritts. Von was a retired employee of Nor-Well Company. He loved fishing and "Loafing" with his buddies.

    Survivors include his wife of 56 years: Elsie Simerly Fritts. Two Children: James "Jim" Fritts & Wife Donna, Elizabethton and Reba Shreve & husband Gregory, Matthews, North Carolina. His Grandchildren: Robbie Fritts, Christopher Shreve , Whitney Shreve, Chris Fuller and wife Melissa and Robert Fuller. His Great Grandchildren: Dylan, Haylee, Alexis, Makenzie, Ashton and Chelsea Fuller. His brother: Harold Fritts and wife Priscilla, Alexandria, Virginia. His Sister: Mary Colbert, Butler. Also surviving are several nieces & nephews. Von's special friends: Karen Fisher, E.J. Blevins, Andy Arnett and Duck Stout.

    A Service to celebrate the life of Von Fritts will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Terry Richardson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Honorary Pallbearers will be employees and former employees of Nor-Well Company, Boyd Smith, Richard Smith, Bobby Joe Taylor, Freddie Shreve and Dallas Richardson. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Sycamore Shoals Hospital and the 2500 Wing, Johnson City Medical Center. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. His body was given to Restore Life for research.

    John attended Asbury School and later moved with his family to Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. After his parents seperated he moved back to Johnson City and lived with his grandparents. He continued his schooling at Asbury, but ran away and enlisted in the United States Army on 26 November 1940 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He told the recruiter that today was his birthday and he was 19, in fact he was only 16 this day.

    John's the son of John Grover Kelsey and Betty May Moody. His younger brother Hershel served in the United States Navy in World War II aboard LST 487 also in the Pacific.

    JOHNSON CITY - Dr. Carroll R. Hyder, age 77, Johnson City, passed away Friday, April 5, 2019 at Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol.

    A native of Johnson City, he was the son of the late Daughton and Stella Moody Hyder.

    He was a member of Boones Creek Christian Church.

    Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jimmie Ann Leonard Hyder, Johnson City; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Todd & Jennifer Hyder, Johnson City; two special grandsons, James Hyder and Patrick Hyder; one brother and sister-in-law, Norman & Barbara Hyder, Maryland; sister-in-law, Patsy Johnson and husband Richard, Johnson City; three nieces and one nephew.

    He graduated from Boones Creek High School in 1959. In 1967 he received his B.S. and also his M.A. from East Tennessee State University in Industrial Technology. In 1971 he received his PH.D. from The Ohio State University in Industrial Technology and Research Statistics.

    Dr. Hyder served four years in the United Sates Air Force at Barksdale Air Force Base in LA. He was a Photo Intelligence Photogrammetry and Cartographic. His unit was presented the Presidential Unit Citation. He was affiliated with scientific, professional and civic organizations: Associated General Contractors of America, East Tennessee Associated General Contractors, National Association of Home Builders, Johnson City Area Home Builders, Syndication, American Vocational Association, and Epsilon Pi Tau, International Honorary Fraternity, and Kiwanis Clubs International. He also had Professional License US Security and Exchange Commission Series 22 and US Security and Exchange Commission Series 63.

    Dr. Hyder was Associate Dean and Professor at East Tennessee State University. He was Dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology at E.T.S.U. and Chairman of Department of Technology at E.T.S.U. He was Associate Professor and Coordinator of Construction Technology program, Vocational Teachers program, and graduate program. He was also at the center for Vocational and Technical Education, Research Associate with primary focus in program evaluation and Career Education and Highway Safety Projects. At E.T.S. U. he helped develop the Gray Fossil Site. He was also instrumental in Digital Media at the University.

    He loved to play golf and took many trips with friends to play.

    Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 pm Monday, April 8, 2019 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Mr. Michael H. Freeman officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Monday prior to the service.

    Private interment services will be conducted at Washington County Memory Gardens.

    He was a native of Johnson City and a son of the late Arra Belle Hyder Church.
    Richard was a 1961 graduate of Lamar High School. He was a retired employee of Baxter Pharmaseal after 27 years of service. His hobby was fishing. Later in life he put his faith and trust in God.
    Survivors include three sons, Richard Lee Church Jr. and Billy Church, both of Johnson City, and Bobby Gene Austin, Elizabethton; one daughter, Yvonne Whitehead, Johnson City; four grandchildren, Miranda, Aaron, Tonya and Josh; one great-grandson, Hawthorne Isiah Byington; three brothers, Curtis "Lynn" Church and wife Connie of Florida, Bobby E. Church and wife Pat, Telford, and Sammy Garland, Gray; one sister, Linda Gourley and husband Doug, Jonesborough; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
    A service for Richard Lee Church will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, April 16, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Dewayne Calhoun, minister, officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. Active pallbearers will be Billy Church, Richard Church Jr., Mickey Mackley, David Garland, Gene Austin, Aaron Gourley and Paul Skinto.

    JOHNSON CITY - Carolyn Ann Kerley, age 71, of Johnson City, TN passed away Saturday, January 21, 2023 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Hubert Church and Ruby Curtis Church. She was a graduate of Jonesborough High School where she was voted by her class as most athletic. She retired as a Court Reporter with Sullivan County, Tennessee. She enjoyed running, bicycling, softball, volleyball, quilting, and cross-itching. Carolyn also loved being outside and vacationing at Tybee Island.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Church and sister-in-law, Kim Church. Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Matthew Kerley, of Johnson City; daughter, Caitlin Kerley, of Johnson City; granddaughter, Mia Kerley; grandson, Ethan Kerley, both of Johnson City; sister, Cylene Sisk, of Orange Park, FL; brother, Lynn and wife, Connie Church, of Melbourne, FL and brother, Joseph Church, of Rogersville, TN; grand-dogs, Tala, Keena, and Winston, and several nieces and nephews.
