    MARY ISABELLE HENSON SWIFT
    ...95 years, 9 months, and 10 days old, died Jan. 11 at the home of her son, Ham, Mountain City, route 1. She was a member of Doe Valley Baptist Church. Funeral was conducted Sunday afternoon at Dewey Christian Church, with Rev. Earl Campbell and Rev. H. T. Mabry officiating. Burial was in the Wilson cemetery.
    Survivors include 4 daughters and one son, Mrs. Susie Fenner, Bristol; Mrs. Callie Tester, Bruceville, Ind.; Mrs. Lennie Lewis of Shady Valley; Mrs. Vertie Ward of Neva; and Ham Swift of Mountain City; also 29 grandchildren and 62 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
    Pallbearers were grandsons and flower girls were granddaughters.

    ...96, of Rte 1, died at her home on Thursday night, Jan. 11, after a short illness. She was a member of the Baptist Church since early childhood.
    Survivors include a son, Ham, of Mountain City; four daughters, Mrs. Callie Tester, Bruceville, Ind., Mrs. Vertia Ward of Neva, Mrs. Lennie Lewis of Shady Valley, and Mrs. Susie Fenner of Bristol; 29 grandchildren, and 62 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
    Funeral was at Dewey Christian Church at 2:00 o'clock Sunday, Jan. 14, with Rev. Earl Campbell and Rev. H. T. Mabry officiating. Burial was in the Wilson Cemetery.

    David Hamilton "Ham" Swift, age 86, Rte. 3, Mountain City, Doe Valley community, died in Johnson City Memorial Hospital Wednesday at 3:5$(sic) p.m. after a short illness. He was a native of Johnson County, the son of the late Joseph and Mary Henson Swift; a retired farmer and member of Dewey Christian Church.
    Survivors include two sons, Stacy Swift, Mountain City and Rod E. Swift, Elizabethton; two daughters, Mrs. Roy Holloway, and Mrs. Bonny Swift, both of Mountain City; four sisters, Mrs. Joe Fenner, Bluff City, Mrs. D.A. Ward, Neva, Mrs. Lennie Lewis, Mountain City, Mrs. Callie Tester, Bruceville, Ind.; and 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were conducted from Dewey Christian Church Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Virgil Booher officiating. Burial was in Wilson cemetery.
    Pallbearers were Ray Ward, Sherman Tester, T.R. Fenner, J.T. Fenner, Doran Davis, Marlin Robinson. Flowerbearers[sic] were ladies of the church and neighbors.

    Laura Alice Arnold, 99, of Mountain City, Tenn., passed away on Friday, February 4, 2022, at the Waters of Roan Highlands. Laura was born in Johnson County, Tenn., on August 14, 1922 to the late James Wiley Swift and Venia Crete Harper Swift. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gatha Allen Arnold; sister, Ruby Norris; brother, Earl Swift and wife Dean; and her brother-in-law, Otis Henson.
    Laura loved her family and friends. She enjoyed get togethers and time spent with her family. Laura loved to raise flowers, work in her garden and mow her own yard. She was a very independent woman who worked hard all her life.
    Laura was a member of Mountain City Church of Christ.
    Those left to cherish her memories include her son, Robert Paul Arnold and wife Wanda of Mountain City, Tenn.; sister, Wileyette Henson of Mountain City, Tenn.; brother, Dearl Swift and wife Nannie Kate of Mountain City, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews.
    The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 8, from 1 until 2 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Ministers Chuck Stewart and Buddy Morefield officiating. The graveside service and burial will follow the funeral in the Wilson Cemetery.

    Doran Hadley Swift Sr., age 89, passed away on October 19, 2021 at his home. Doran was born on June 22, 1932 to the late Lola Swift Holloway in Johnson County. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his grandparents who raised him, David Hamilton Swift and Alice Arnold Swift; his son, Doran Swift “Doc”; grandson, Dokken Swift and brother, John Holloway.

    Doran was born on June 22, 1932 in Johnson County, Tennessee and attended Dewey School and graduated from Johnson County High School in 1951. After graduating from high school, Doran enlisted into the United States Airforce. He completed his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas then attended A&M College in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, studying to be a Vehicle Motorized Equipment Electrician. He spent the remainder of his service working on electrical systems at the Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City Florida. During this time, he married Emogene Combs on December 10, 1953 in Mountain City, Tennessee. He was honorably discharged in 1955, but continued to serve in the Reserves for 4 years.

    Doran returned to Johnson County in 1955 to care for his grandmother and grandfather who raised him. During this time he worked for Summers & Taylor Construction Company. After obtaining his electrician license from Washington County Technical School, he worked as an electrician and an analyst planner for Burlington Industries for twenty years. Doran also served as a volunteer for the Johnson County Rescue Squad for fifteen years and was a member of the Johnson County Chamber of Commerce for many years.

    Doran learned to work on the farm at an early age and loved riding and working with horses. Doran was instrumental in starting the Johnson County Trail Riders Club and was a charter member. He volunteered for several years working with kids in the 4-H Horse club and 4-H Horse Show. He also worked with others to sponsor trail rides, wagon trains and help coordinate their participation in local parades and events. His love for horses took him to many ranches over the years, some including the Marriott Corporation Ranch in Front Royal, Virginia where he was the manager of their trail riding division and the Virginia Beef Company where he worked to ride and round up cattle for shipments. Later He worked with roundups at the Haythorne Land & Cattle Company in Ogallala, Nebraska. Doran continued his love for farming throughout his life. There weren’t many days when you wouldn’t see him out working on his tractor or out around his own farm tending to animals, fixing fences or working in his garden.

    Doran was a member of the Mountain City Presbyterian Church. He was an Elder of the Church and served as the Chairman of the Board of Deacons for several years. He enjoyed attending church and spending time with the members of his church. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, and especially loved seeing his grandkids and great grands. His biggest joy was sharing his love of horses by taking them for rides on his horses, ponies, and pony carts. Later on, it was on his tractor, wagon hooked to the lawnmower and even his scooter around the farm. Doran also enjoyed watching RFD-TV and napping in his recliner.

    Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of nearly 68 years, Emogene Swift; daughter, Pam Hacker; sisters, Virginia Manuel, Anni Skewes (Mike), Mae Matheson, Faye Phillipppi, June Thomas (Coleman Brown); grandchildren, Sarah Swift Jennings (Mark), Abigail Hacker, and Jesse Hacker; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Taylor, Zoey, Mckenzie, and Lucas; several nieces, nephews, special friends and caregiver, Nancy Holman.

    The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22, 2021 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. with Pastors Jim Swoager and Daryl Cox officiating. Special music will be provided by Randy Dandurand. The graveside service and burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park with military honors accorded by Johnson County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Jason Bryan, Wayne Ward, Hubert Glenn, Mark Jennings, Eric Cullop, and Joe Winebarger. Honorary pallbearers are Matthew Swift, Paul Roach II, Howard Moon, Duran Tookmanian, Rhudy Lucas, BC Stout, Lawrence Keeble, Bill Webb, Landon Webb, and Randy Dandurand.

    Leita Faye Phillippi, age 72, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, May 28, 2022. She was born on May 16, 1950, the second of a set of twins (Neita Mae) to Roy M. Holloway and Lola (Toad) Swift Holloway.

    Faye was married to her childhood sweetheart, Harold Phillippi for 51 years before he was deceased on October 12, 2018.

    She was also predeceased by her parents, her brothers, Doran Swift and John Holloway, and her in-laws, Edwin G. “Tuck” and Virginia Phillippi.

    Faye was a faithful member of Bethany Baptist Church where she was a member of the Good News Sunday School class.

    She is survived by two daughters, Lisa Clawson (special friend Roy Bennett) and Jaycee Clawson: two grandsons, Ethan and Josh Clawson. Also surviving are four sisters, Jenny Johnson Manuel, Ann Skewes (Mike), Mae Matheson and June Thomas, in addition to a brother-in-law, Roby Phillippi and two sisters-in-law, Carol Phillippi and Emogene Swift. Faye also had several nieces and nephews and many, many special friends.

    Funeral services for Faye will be conducted at 2 pm on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 in the Charles B. Hux Chapel of Hux Lipford Funeral Home with Dr. Gale Hartley officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 pm prior the service. The graveside service will follow at the Brookshire Cemetery.

    Pallbearers are Josh Clawson, Doug Thomas, Jason Bryan, Mike Skewes, Bob Mullins, Jeff Phillippi and Roy Bennett.

    Honorary pallbearers are Jay Stout, Frank Stout, Burl Johnson, John Davis, Brad Thomas, Ethan Clawson and Bethany Baptist Church Good News Sunday School class.

    ELIZABETHTON - Jacquelyn “Jackie” McKinney, 79, went to her Heavenly Home on Friday, December 9, 2022.

    Jackie was born on May 1, 1943 in Johnson County, TN to Rod and June Ward Swift. She was a member of Valley Forge United Methodist Church. Jackie was in the food service at Elizabethton School System. Jackie was a loving wife and loved her family.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, Jeff McKinney and Mike McKinney, brother, Mack Swift.

    Jackie is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Alvin E. McKinney; brother, Keith Swift; several nieces and nephews.

    A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, December 12, 2022 at Happy Valley Cemetery with Dr. Steve Castle officiating.

    Timothy Eugene “Peanut” Swift, age 72, of Mountain City, TN, passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born May 23, 1950, to the late Bonnie Ethel Swift.

    Peanut loved riding horses and gardening. He also enjoyed mowing and would do anything to help anyone out. Peanut worked on the farm for many years and worked at Tri-State Growers for about 12 years. He also worked at Leco and Burlington for a short while. He loved most working on the farm and worked for Glen and Wayne Ward and also Tommy Jack Shoun.

    Those left to cherish his memories include his sister, Margaret Tugman, and husband Bill; nieces, Tracey Safford (Billy), and Whitney Estep (Josh); nephew, Bo Fritts (Angie); great nieces, Daryl-Hannah Vines Addison, and Harper Estep; great-nephews, Hunter Vines (Morgan), Mason Estep, Jacob Harrington, Brady Fritts; several cousins and friends.

    The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 with Pastor John Hammett and Danny Cullop officiating. The graveside service and burial will follow the funeral from the Wilson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Josh Estep, Billy Safford, Bo Fritts, and Brady Fritts. Honorary pallbearers are John Bishop, Jim Davis, Dearl Swift, Tommy Jack Shoun, Wayne Ward, and all the employees of Tri-State Growers Co-op.

    MOUNTAIN CITY - Mary J. Swift, age 76, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

    She was born on April 30, 1943, in Mountain City, Johnson County, TN to the late Ray W. Ward and Nora Lee (Cress) Ward. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Theodore 'Ted' Shores.

    Those left to cherish her memories include her husband of 48 years, Jack Swift; sister, Nancy Carol Shores; special friend of many years, Margaret Cress; niece, Debbie Flanders and husband John of Sherman, TX; nephew, Greg Swift and wife Sheila of Powell, TN; cousins, Roy, David and Richard Snyder, Hal and Wayne Ward, Bob Miller, Margaret Myers and Albert Cress, and many more special friends and neighbors.

    Mary was a member of First Christian Church and of the Joy Sunday School Class. She was past President of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #61 and past Secretary of the Johnson County Historical Society. In her spare time, Mary loved to go shopping.

    The family will receive friends from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. Friday, August 2, 2019 at the Mountain City Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Minister Dwayne Dickson officiating. Music will be provided by Janice Ashley, pianist and Nancy Davis, soloist. Private family graveside and entombment will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 3, 2019 at the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum.     Margaret was born on August 30, 1939, in Butler, TN. She was a 1957 Graduate of Johnson County High School and attended both The University of Kentucky and East Tennessee State University. Margaret moved to Bristol in 1958 when she began working at Raytheon. During her nine years at Raytheon, she met Samuel Myers and they were married on July 1, 1967. Margaret became a homemaker and mother who loved taking care of her family.

    She was an active and dedicated member of First Baptist Church Bristol Virginia where she served as Church Hostess for 10 years. During which time she orchestrated countless Wednesday Night Meals, wedding receptions and other social events at the church. Margaret was well known for her volunteer spirit and endless hours working with various groups at her church, school PTA, South Holston Little League Concessions, Sullivan East High School Band Concessions, and Sullivan County 4-H.

    Margaret is preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Samuel Miller Myers, parents Dayton and Minnie Belle (Ward) Snyder, brother James S. Snyder and sister in-law Dixie Snyder. She is survived by her daughter, Jama and husband Phillip Richardson; son, Daniel and wife Debbie Myers; stepdaughter, Linda and husband John R. Williams and her grandchildren, Sam, Max and Van Richardson, Jessica, Joshua and Jocelyn Myers, Alvin and wife Lisa Williams, Mary Ruth and husband David Brown and Michelle and husband Jason Reynolds; great-grandsons; Hayden Williams, Paul Brown and Noah Reynolds; her brothers, Roy Snyder, David and wife Ladonna Snyder and Richard Snyder; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.

    The family wishes to thank the staff of Courtyards Senior Living Knoxville, Truewood by Merrill Powell, and Avalon Hospice for their loving care of our mother.

    He was a native of Johnson County and was born March 20, 1941 to the late Dayton S. Snyder and Minnie Belle Ward Snyder.

    Jim was a quiet man and had a gentle spirit. He loved his family and adored his grandchildren. He loved the simple life and also loved traveling to the Amish Country because he felt he had a lot in common with them.

    Jim Graduated from Johnson County High School and spend three years in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was a dairy farmer for 36 years and a carrier for Johnson City Press for 5 years. He was of the Baptist faith and loved his Lord Jesus Christ. When able he attended Vaughts Gap Baptist Church.

    He is survived by his wife of 27 years Lois Phipps Snyder; sister: Margaret Snyder Myers; brothers: David Snyder and wife Ladonna; Roy Snyder and wife Dixie; Richard "Dick" Snyder and wife Lona Jean; daughter: Angelina Marie Snyder and husband Nevin; step children: Jody Putnam, Tammy McCloud, Pamela Brown and husband Jeff; grandchildren: Liddy Drey Arnold, Madelyn Grace Arnold, Johnathan Tanner Putnam, Shainna Rhea Putnam, Allyson Paige McCloud, Griffin Lynn Brown, Carson Ray Brown; his children whom he called his adopted children: Wild Willie Phipps, Melinda (Moe) Sutherland Hasket, Bobbie Joe Crawford, Holly Grayson Brown, Billy and Mark Ward. Several nieces, nephews, many special friends, and his special horse Andy also survive.

    Funeral services for James Stuart Snyder will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012 from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Swift and Rev. Chuck Morefield officiating.

    The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Graveside service with military honors accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2012 from Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

    Active pallbearers will be Willie Phipps, Billy Ward, Mark Ward, Jeff Brown, Griffin Brown, Nevin Snyder, J.L. Hamby, Dan Myers, Brent Snyder, Eric Snyder and Travis Williams.
