Roma Jean Mathes, age 81, of Elizabethton, TN, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Paul Tolley and Goldie Carver Hall and was born on August 14, 1938. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of forty-nine years, Gene Mathes; one son, John Paul Mathes and her step-father, Luther Hall.

Roma Jean was a devoted wife, mother and nanny. She was a determined woman of faith and was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church. She enjoyed watching college basketball, especially Duke and cooking for her family.

Those left to cherish her memory include three children, Debbie Bunton and husband Jimmy, Greg Mathes and wife Teresa and Brian Mathes and girlfriend Debbie Buckles all of Elizabethton; six grandchildren, April Fox and husband Mark of Vass, NC, J.P. Mathes and wife Leona of Elizabethton, Cody Bunton and wife Andrea of Jonesborough, Jeanna Brewer and husband Nathaniel of Gray, Kristin Mathes and Jagger Mathes both of Elizabethton and four great-grandchildren. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and neighbors also survive.

The family will be holding a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2019, at Miller Cemetery located next to the State Line Drive-In.

JOHNSON CITY - Benny Robert Carver, Johnson City went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Johnson City and was a son of the late Reece Carver Sr. and Helen Wiley Carver. Benny was a very loving tender hearted, compassionate and caring husband, brother, father, grandfather, son, uncle and friend. He loved his wife, Barbara of 36 years with all of his heart. Benny also loved his dogs, Miley and Peaches. He loved to build hot rods and going to car shows. He would do anything for anybody. Benny retired from Whites Foods, Jonesborough TN and Price Less Foods Kingsport, TN. After retirement he started to work for Dealers Auto Auction, a job he loved very much. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Maggie Wiley.
Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara Hilton Carver; his daughters, Angela Dodson and husband, Kevin and Michele Carter and husband, Josh; a son, Robbie Carver; a sister, Sandy Reed; brothers, Roger Carver and wife, Janet, Terry Carver and wife, Tracy and Junior Carver and wife, Kathy; a sister-in-law, Reda Hilton Jones and late husband Rick Jones; a brother-in-law, Johnny Hilton and wife, Christy; his grandchildren, Leah Carver, Jacob Carver, Bailie Carter and Colby Carter; a very special dear friend, Roger Riddle; also several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 7:00 PM Monday, February 14, 2022 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga avenue, Johnson City with Pastor Bryant Collins and Mr. Clay Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Honorary Pallbearers will be Johnny Hilton, Gene Davenport, Robert Cox, Christian Blevins, Brayden Montgomery, Junior Carver, Roger Carver, Terry Carver, Jamie Carver, Harry Miller, Jim Tipton, Dennis Isom, Robbie Crowe, Clay Johnson, Kenneth Snowden, E.L. Wheeler, Alfred Dugger, Ray Matthews, Randy Hearl, Chuck Riddle and all of the employees at Dealers Auto Auction, and friends at Freddy’s Car Show and Elizabethton Cruise-In.

HAMPTON - John Paul, age 60, and wife, Robin Renee Sells Mathes, age 47, Hampton, Tn. passed away Friday, July 8, 2016 at Watauga Lake. They were camping when the storm came through.

Robin had lived in Georgia for several years but was a native of Bristol, Tennessee. She was a graduate of Ringgold, Georgia High School. She was associated with her husband in the operation of The Hamptons Camp Ground. Robin and John Paul loved camping, fishing, the outdoors and their family. She attended Hampton Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Carl T. Sells, Sr. & Mayme Ruth Sells, T.G. & Vivian Gibson Hickman; her Uncles, Samuel (Sam) David Sells and Marty Hickman.

Survivors include her son & daughter-In-Law, Justin Ryan & Marsha Musselwhite, Acworth, Georgia; her daughter, Jessica Renee Musselwhite, Nashville, Tennessee; her step-son, J.P. & Wife Leona Mathes, Johnson City; her grandchildren, Ella Ruth & Jackson Ryan Musselwhite; her father & step-mother, James E. "Jim" & Kim Sells, Elizabethton; her mother & step-father, Porita Hickman Jones & husband David, Woodstock, Georgia; her brother & sister-in-law, James E. "Jamie" & Tabitha Sells, Bluff Cit; her sisters, Carla Dawn Sells, Talking Rock, Georgia, Rachel Ann Davis, Johnson City and Amy Elizabeth Waddell, Bluff City; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and great nieces & nephews; their dog "Trigger" and cat "William Wallace".

John Paul was a native of Carter County. He was a graduate of Hampton High School. He served as Carter County Circuit Court Clerk for 16 years. He along with Robin operated The Hamptons Camp Ground. He attended Hampton Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Mathes and his grandparents, Luther & Goldie Hall and Paul Tolley and Minister & Mrs. John Mathes.

Survivors include his son & daughter-in-law, J.P. & Leona Mathes, Johnson City, his step-children, Justin Ryan & Wife Marsha Musselwhite, Acworth, Georgia and Jessica Renee Musselwhite, Nashville, Tennessee; his step-grandchildren, Ella Ruth & Jackson Ryan Musselwhite; his mother, Roma Jean Tolley Mathes, Elizabethton; sister & "brother-in-law", Debbie & Jimmy Bunton, Elizabethton; his brothers, Greg Mathes and wife Teresa and Brian Mathes and Debra Buckles all of Elizabethto; his mother-in-law, Porita Hickman Jones & husband David, Woodstock, Georgia; his father-in-law, James "Jim" Sells and wife Kim, Elizabethton; several nieces & nephews.

Joint Funeral Services for John Paul & Robin will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Hampton Elementary School Gymnasium with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, Minister, Rev. Dave Whitesides and Rev. Adam Sells officiating. Music will be provided by Jerry White and Friends and J.P. & Leona Mathes.

Active Pallbearers for Robin will be: Jamie Sells, Daltyn Sells, Paul Clark and Adam McBride. Active Pallbearers for John Paul will be: Shane Stockton, Tony Greene, Hank Jenkins, Eddie Joe Wilson, Cody Bunton, Mike "Red" Dugger, Johnny Blankenship, Rick McClain, Mick Mathis and Phil Hileman. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Adam McBride, Brian Mathes, Greg Mathes, Jimmy Bunton, Barry Mathis, Jamie Sells, Jagger Mathes and his many friends of Carter County.

The families will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Hampton Elementary School. Graveside Service for John Paul will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2016, in the Miller Cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. on Friday to go to the cemetery. Robins request was to be cremated.

ELIZABETHTON - Brian Keith Mathes, age 54, of Elizabethton, TN went to be with the Lord and family and friends who have passed before him on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was the son of the late Gene and Roma Jean Mathes. Brian was a graduate of Hampton High School and a member of Hampton Christian Church. He loved bass fishing, Nascar and bluegrass music. He was a brave and positive individual even when faced with a serious illness. Brian will be remembered as a kind hearted man and will be missed by many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Paul Mathes and grandparents, John and Callie Mathes, Luther and Goldie Hall and Paul Tolley.

Those left to cherish his memory are his brother and sister-in-law, Greg and Teresa Mathes; sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Jimmy Bunton; nieces and nephews, JP and Leona Mathes, Cody and Andrea Bunton, Callie, Jagger Mathes and Malia, April and Mark Fox, Kristin and Clifton Birchfield and Magnolia, Jeanna and Nathaniel Brewer and Novalee and Stetson; girlfriend, Debbie Buckles and family; special friends, Sam and Dave Timbs and family, Alainya Hare and family, Lois Carver and Virginia Grindstaff and several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Brian will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 04, 2022 at Beck Mountain Baptist Church, 2797 Siam Rd, Elizabethton, TN 37643 with Reverend Ronnie Campbell and Mr. Dwayne Calhoun officiating. Music will be under the direction of JP and Leona Mathes. Honorary pallbearers are Houston Timbs, Sam Timbs, Dave Timbs, Kenny Timbs, Mark Timbs, Keith Rouse, Frank Childers, Cody Bunton, JP Mathes, Jagger Mathes, Mark Fox, Clifton Birchfield and Zackery Bates.
