Mrs. Frances Calhoun, 75 died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mike Peters, at Hampton, 11:40 am Monday, after a several months. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church for 50 years. Survivors are three daughters, Miss Jessie Calhoun of Hampton, Mrs. Sam Harrison of Shell Creek, and Mrs. Mike Peters of Hampton; three sons, Clarence Calhoun of Elizabethton, Oscar Calhoun of Hampton and Tate Calhoun of South Bend, Ind, three sisters and on brother, forty grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Evergreen Church at 11 AM Wednesday with the Rev. Carl Osborne officiating. The body will be taken to the home of her sister, Mrs. Sam Harris at 3 PM today. Burial will be at Fork Mountain Cemetery in Vale, NC. Appalachian Funeral Home is in charge.

Note: The above obit. was copied as it appeared in the Elizabethton Star. There are a couple of errors in this obituary. Grandma and Grandpa Calhoun had 2 daughters and 4 sons, not 3 daughters and 3 sons as the obit. states. There is no Miss Jessie Calhoun. It should have read Jeffie Calhoun of Hampton. The body was taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam Harrison, not to the home of her sister, Mrs. Sam Harris as the obit. stated. Frances did not have a sister who married a Sam Harris.

John Harrison Bentley, 88 of 1424 Miller St., died at 6:10 a.m. Friday at Holston Valley Community Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Wilkes County, N.C. and lived in Canton, Ohio for a number years. He had been a resident of Kingsport since 1959. He was a retired employee of the Hoover Company of Canton, Ohio and attended the Full Gospel Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maud Young Bentley, one daughter, Mrs. Thomas J. (Frankie) Price Jr., Kingsport, two sons, Russell Edward Bentley, Canton, Ohio and Robert Church, Newland, N.C., Three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for John Harrison Bentley will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday from Carter's Chapel with Rev. V.D. Stafford, Rev. Robert Brown and Rev. M.A. Raybon officiating. Burial will follow in Vale Cemetary. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday. Contributions may be made to the Children's Home. Carter's Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Oscar Cleo Calhoun, 83, Rt. 9, Elizabethton, died Tuesday in the V.A. Medical Center, Mountain Home; following an extended illness. A native of Avery County, N.C., he was the son of the late Harrison and Frances Bentley Calhoun. Mr. Calhoun was a member of the North Side Baptist Church, a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation, a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post No. 2166. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Nicky Walker, and by two brothers, Tate and Clarence Calhoun. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Fannie Presnell Calhoun, of the home; two sons, Roger Calhoun, Elkhart, Ind., and H.L. Calhoun, Mishawaka, Ind.; three daughters, Mrs. David (Lillian) Watts, Larnburg, N.C., Lucille Powell and Joyce Pierce, both of Elizabethton; one brother, Jeffie Calhoun, Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. Mike (Texie) Peters, Hampton, and Mrs. Sam (Grace) Harrison, Elizabethton; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy Presnell, Roan Mountain. Twenty-two grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, several great and great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Grace Calhoun Harrison, 90, 451 Coal Chute Road, Elizabethton, died Thursday, September 4, 1997, at Columbia-Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Avery County, N.C. she was the daughter of the late Harrison and Frances Bentley Calhoun. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam Harrison, July 29, 1991, two daughters, and one son. Mrs. Harrison was a member of Centerview Church of Christ. Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, JoAnn and Claude Guinn, Maxine Ellis, and Christine "Cricket" Hamm, all of Elizabethton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Farrell and Linda Harrison and George Ronnie Harrison, all of Elizabethton; a brother, Jeffy Calhoun, Hampton; six granddaughters, Claudia Holloway, Beverly Brewer, Hope White, Joy Harrison, Ronda Harrison, and Connie Lawson, all of Elizabethton; seven grandsons, Jeff Guinn, Sam Harrison, Gabe Harrison, Danny, Donnie, Sam and Tim Jones, all of Elizabethton; and nine great-grandchildren and one great, great-granddaughter survive. Mrs Texie B. Peters, 80, Rt. 2, Hampton, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 1990, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was a Unicoi County native but had lived in Mishawaka, Ind., for 15 years before coming to Hampton. She was a daughter of the late Harrison and Frances Bentley Calhoun. Mrs. Peters was a member of Union Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by four brothers and one grandchild. Survivors include her husband, Mike Peters; three daughters, Mrs. Louise Hazlewood, Plymouth, Ind., Mrs. Carolyn Magnuson, Mishawaka, and Mrs. Gail White, Hampton; four sons, Jack R. Funeral services for Mrs. Texie B. Peters, age 80, of Rt. 2 Hampton, who died Tuesday, August 28, 1990 will be conducted at 8 P.M. Friday in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, with Rev. Burgess Vincent and Mr. Bill Jones, Minister, officiating. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Robert "Jake" Isaiah Bentley, 83, Johnson City, passed away Friday, July 10, 2015, in the M.D. Anderson Cancer & Research Center, Houston, Texas.

A native of Newland, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Oscar M. & Dora Oaks Bentley. He had lived in Elizabethton and Johnson City most of his life.

He retired as a Mater Sargent E7 from the United States Army after 21 years of service.

Mr. Bentley was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church, Elizabethton. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 2108, Johnson City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Maude Baldwin and Mae Burleson. And three brothers: Rom, Ronald and Wheeler Bentley.

Survivors include his wife: Nyoka Taylor Bentley. His Children: Tammy Murphy Almond, and Kawana Collake both of Johnson City. His Grandchildren: Brandon Murphy, Austin Almond, Chani Lewis, a special grandson, Isaiah Arnold. His Sisters: Fergie Yontz and husband Bill and Lida Campbell all of Elizabethton, Victoria Carpenter, Canton, Ohio and Martha Baldwin, Michigan City, Indiana. His Brothers-in-law: Bobby Taylor, Johnson City and Jack Ward, Elizabethton. His sister-in-law: Mary Ward, Elizabethton. Several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2015, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tony Clark officiating.

Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Millie Renfro, Rev. Tony Clark & Donna Clark. Active Pallbearers will be: Brandon Murphy, Austin Almond, Bobby Taylor, Jack Ward, Bryon Yontz and Van Almond. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Gerald Matheson, Ernest Hardin, Jim Barnett and friends at VFW Post 2108 and all his nephews.

Family and friends of "Jake" may call at the residence of a daughter Tammy Murphy Almond between 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday.
