    Rev. Victor Lewis Broyles, 79, Rt. 3, Butler, died Saturday night, July 14, 1984 in the Johnson County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. A native of Marion, Va., he was the son of Henry Luther and Senia Comer Broyles and had lived a number of years in Sullivan County before moving to Johnson County.

    Rev. Broyles was ordained in the Baptist Church in 1953 and had served the following churches: Pierce Baptist Church, Sink Valley Baptist, Fish Springs Baptist and Mt. View Baptist Church. He was a member of the Pierce Baptist Church and also the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge No. 679.

    He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters and by a son, Earl Broyles in 1971.

    Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maude Pierce Broyles; three daughters, Mrs. Ethel Garland, Mrs. Park (Sue) Arnold, both of Butler, and Mrs. J. D. (Corine) Smith, Elkhart, Ind.; ; one son, Ralph Broyles, Mt. Vernon, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Zella McReynolds of Bristol, and Mrs. Hubert (Viola) Greene and Mrs. Hoover (Dorothy) Crowe, both of Elizabethton; and four brothers, Comer Broyles of Elizabethton, Howard Broyles of Bluff City, Joe Broyles, Fort Myers, Fla., and Walter "Paige" Broyles of Butler. Twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

    Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ray Greene and Rev. Art Greer officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Butler Memorial Cemetery. The Timber Ridge Quartet will be in charge of music.

    Active pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Rev. Clarence Snodgrass, Rev. Dolphus Forrester, Harvey White, Rev. R. A. Royston, Rev. David Cunningham, Rev. Hubert Greene, Rev. Alvin Greene, Rev. Richard White and members of the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge No. 679 will be in charge of graveside services. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to their local church or the Rescue Squad.

    Victor married Maude Ethel Pierce on 20 Aug 1927 in Carter County, , , Tennessee.     Comer Broyles, 76, Rt. 3, Elizabethton, died Tuesday morning in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness.

    A native of Virginia, he was the son of the late Henry Luther and Senia Comer Broyles and had lived in Carter County for a number of years. Mr. Broyles was a retired farmer and a member of the Harmony Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Nellie McGhee Broyles, October 10, 1983, and by a son, Gene Edward Broyles.

    Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Norma) Sheffield of Elizabethton, and Mrs. Larry (Edith) Scalf of Watauga; eight sons, Fred, Robert, Floyd, Dewey, Raymond, Haskel, Conley and Preston Broyles, all of Elizabethton, and Beryl Broyles, Abingdon, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Zella McReynolds of Bristol, and Mrs. Hubert (Viola) Greene and Mrs. Hoover (Dorothy) Crowe, both of Elizabethton; and three brothers, Howard Broyles of Bluff City, Joe Broyles, Fort Myers, Fla., and Walter Paige Broyles of Butler. Sixteen grandchildren, Terry, David, Tim, Diana, Regina, Teresa, Sheila Haskel, Wayne, Kelli and Kristi Broyles, Sara Sheffield, Donna Merrit, Allen, Keith, Chris and Cindy Scalf; and one great-grandchild, Achlee Scalf.

    Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Hubert Greene officiating. Interment will be in the Crumley Cemetery, Bluff City. Active pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Reynolds, Jerome Daugherty, Arlie Reece and Floyd Reece.

    Henry married Nellie Ruffie McGhee about 1928 in Carter County, , , Tennessee.     Walter Paige Broyles, 77, 549 Piercetown Rd, Butler, Tenn., died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1997, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital of an apparent heart attack.

    A native of Sullivan County, he was a son of Henry Luther and Senia Comer Broyles. Mr. Broyles was preceded in death by fifteen brothers and sisters.

    Mr. Broyles lived a number of years in Johnson County. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation. He was a member of Hampton Masonic Lodge #750, Order of Eastern Star Chapter #218 Butler. Mr. Broyles was a former member of the Johnson County Board of Education, where he had served as Chairman. He was a member of the Pierce Baptist Church, where he was a teacher of the Adult Sunday School Class. He was a Army veteran of World War II.

    Survivors include his wife, Lola Pierce Broyles; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margie and Billy Joe White, Taylor, South Carolina, and Helen and Gary Stout, Elizabethton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Geri Broyles, Elkhart, Indiana, and Danny and Susie Broyles, Elizabethton; and one sister, Mrs. Dorothy Crowe, Elizabethton. Eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren also survive.

    Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Oddis Dugger and Rev. Harvey White officiating. Graveside service and interment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, in Butler Memorial Cemetery.

    Active pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 9:55 a.m. Saturday, will be John Dugger, Johnny Pierce, Billy Joe Greene, Steve Pierce, B. J. Horn and Elbert Nichols. The family will receive from 7 - 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence. Hampton Masonic Lodge #750 will conduct a memorial service following the funeral service. V.F.W. Post 2166 will conduct military graveside honors. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 9:55 a.m. Saturday.

    Ethel Broyles Garland, 84, Elizabethton formerly of Butler passed away Monday August 5, 2013 in the Hillview Health Center. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Victor and Maude Pierce Broyles. Ethel was a retired employee of the Timberland Boot Company, Mountain City. She was a member of the Pierce Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband: Delford Paul Garland, June 29, 1974, by two sons: Jeffrey L. Garland and Larry Garland, a daughter: Margaret Garland and two brothers: Earl Broyles and Ralph Broyles.
    Survivors include a son & daughter-in-law: Jerry P. & Carol Garland, Elizabethton. Six Grandchildren: Victoria Garland, Dustin Garland, Dennis Garland, Tracy Garland, Chris Garland and Penny Garland. Seven Great Grandchildren, Seven Great Great Grandchildren; Two Sisters: Corrine Arnold, Elkhart, Indiana and Sue Arnold and her husband Park, Butler. Several Nieces & Nephews. Her former son-in-law: James Matherly.
    Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2013 in Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton with the Rev. Harvey White and Rev. John Hammitt. Honorary Minister will be Rev. Oddie Dugger, Jr. Interment will follow in Butler Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from Grandsons and Great Grandsons.

    Evelyn Sue Arnold, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at her home. Evelyn was born on November 9, 1930 to the late Victor Broyles and Maude Pierce Broyles in Old Butler of Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Park Arnold, who passed away in 2013; her son, Tommy Arnold; siblings, Ethel Garland, Ralph Broyles, and Earl Broyles.

    Sue was a long time employee of the local factories such as Leco, Levi Strauss, and Burlington. She enjoyed crocheting and making special things for her family and friends. She was also well known for her homemade rolls and cinnamon rolls. Sue was a devoted member of Little Doe Baptist Church.

    Those left to cherish her memories include her daughter, Sandy Snyder and husband Lynn, who she loved like a son; sister, Corine Arnold; grandchildren, April Grindstaff and husband Kenny; Ricky Snyder and wife Miranda, who was also her caretaker, Tom Snyder and wife Sally; great grandchildren, Megan Hart and husband Casey, Joshua Grindstaff and wife Taylor, Brianna Snyder, Dawson Snyder and girlfriend Shea Huyard, Addy Snyder, Maston Snyder; great great grandchildren, Sloane Hart, Carter Hart, Collins Hart, Isabella Grindstaff; best friend, DeEtte Hampton; daughter-in-law, Faye Brickey; also several nieces, nephews, cousins, and her three special fur buddies (Skip, Hank & Boone) who she loved dearly.

    The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at Little Doe Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Kreg Smith officiating. The graveside service will follow at the Butler Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ricky Snyder, Tom Snyder, Dawson Snyder, Maston Snyder, Kenny Grindstaff, Joshua Grindstaff, Casey Hart, Carter Hart, Jerry Garland, and Herb Hampton.

    The family would like to thank all of Sue’s previous caregivers, Connie Clawson, Vickie Stout, Dawn Lunceford, Audrey Perry, and Ballad Home Health and Hospice for their kindness and compassion.

    Fred Lewis Broyles, 1009 Circle Drive, Elizabethton, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Henry Comer and Nellie Ruth McGhee Broyles.

    He was a former co-owner of Tom and Fred's Garage. Following retirement, he was employed by Austin's Garage for a number of years. Mr. Broyles was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church, but attended First Free Will Baptist Church of Elizabethton where he was a member of the Darold White Sunday School class. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

    Survivors include his wife, Erma Peters Broyles; a son, Terry Broyles, Elizabethton; two sisters, Norma Sheffield, Elizabethton, and Edith Scalf, Watauga; seven brothers, Conley, Preston, Raymond, Floyd, Dewey and Haskel Broyles, all of Elizabethton, and Burl Broyles, Abingdon, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the First Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Greer, Rev. Phil Poston and Rev. Elmer Carter officiating. Graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from members of the Darold White Sunday School class.

    The family would like to express a special "thank you" to the doctors and staff of the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

    A life-long resident of Johnson County, Mr. Arnold was employed as a logger and was a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mrs. Eliza Arnold, in 1975.

    Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Faye Brickey Arnold; one daughter, April Dawn Arnold, of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Park Arnold, Rt. 1, Butler; one sister, Mrs. Lynn (Sandy) Snyder, Rt. 3, Butler; his maternal grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Victor Broyles, Rt. 3, Butler; and his paternal grandfather, Ed Arnold, Rt. 1, Butler. Several aunts and uncles also survive.

    Funeral services for Tommy Lewis Arnold, 29, Rt. 3, Butler, who died Monday morning, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Little Doe Baptist Church, with the Rev. R. A. Royston and Mark Sparks, minister, officiating. Interment will be in the Butler Memorial Cemetery. The Sugar Grove Quartet will be in charge of music.

    Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the church at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, will be Carroll Matherly, Jerry Matherly, Jerry Garland, Larry Garland, Bob Atwood and Carroll Fletcher.
