    John H. Phipps, 75, of Milligan College, died at his home last Thursday after a brief illness.
    Funeral Services were conducted at the Watauga Methodist Church Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jay B. Osborne and Dr. E. H. Yankee officiating. Burial was the Caldwell Springs Cemetery.
    Pallbearers were Clyde Be__field[illegible], Wade Bowling, Dana Campbell, Charles Whitson, Walter Gouge, W. T. Forges, Gene Butler, and Guy Babb.
    Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Amanda Phipps; three sons, Johnny Phipps and Steve Phipps of Johnson City, and Coy Phipps of Milligan; three daughters, Mrs. Fred Sammons and Mrs. Selmer Garland of Johnson City and Miss Mary Phipps of Milligan; two grandchildren, Charles and Ruby Phipps; two sisters, Mrs. Amanda Miller of Johnson City and Mrs. Mollie Taylor of Stony Creek; and a brother, Logan Phipps of Stony Creek.

    Nellie Myrtle Phipps Heaton, age 95, of Johnson City, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Thursday, April 21, 2005 at Johnson City Medical Center. Myrtle was born May 19, 1909, in Johnson County, Tennessee and until just recently was able to recount a lot of stories of her life for the last 96 years. Myrtle was the daughter of the late John Hamilton Phipps who preceded her in death in 1947 and the late Amanda Eliza Wilkins Phipps who preceded her in death in 1972. She was the eldest of eight children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three husbands, Luther ?Luke? Elliott, Fred Sammons and Clint Heaton, three brothers, Steve Phipps, Johnny Phipps and Peter Phipps and one sister Leticia Phipps. A nine-year-old son, Ray Elliott, also preceded Myrtle in death in 1940. Surviving Mrs. Heaton is one daughter, Mary Grace Collins, one brother, Coy Phipps, two sisters, Lexie Phipps Garland and Mary Phipps Byrd and her husband, Rev. D. C. Byrd, all of Johnson City, several nieces and nephews and a special niece, Judy Garland Sluder. A celebration of Myrtle?s life will be held on Sunday, April 24, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Morris-Baker Funeral Home South Chapel. Interment will follow services at Monte Vista Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.

    Lexie Phipps Garland, age 89, of Johnson City, died Friday, April 4, 2008. Lexie was born Friday, January 24, 1919 in Johnson County, TN, having lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was a member of Keystone Freewill Baptist Church where she was a former deacon?s wife and Sunday school teacher. She was formerly employed at Bemberg, Elizabethton, TN. Lexie was the daughter of the late John Hamilton Phipps, who preceded her in death in 1947, and the late Amanda Eliza Wilkins Phipps, who preceded her in death in 1972. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Selmar Garland in 1983, three brothers, Steve Phipps, Johnny Phipps and Peter Phipps, and two sisters, Leticia Phipps and Myrtle Phipps Heaton. Survivors include two sons and one daughter, eldest child, James Thomas Garland of Knoxville; twins, Ronald David Garland of Knoxville and Judy Ann Garland Sluder & husband David Sluder of Elizabethton. Also surviving are one brother, Coy Phipps and one sister, Mary Phipps Byrd and husband Rev. D.C. Byrd, all of Johnson City; one sister-in-law, Lena Phipps of Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express a special ?Thank You? to the entire staff of NHC Nursing Home, Johnson City for their loving care and support. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2008 at Monte Vista Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Greer officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Sunday, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home chapel at 2:00 p.m. Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery.

    She was the daughter of the late Johnny and Amanda Wilkins Phipps. She was born in Johnson County, but she lived her whole life in Carter County.
    She was a homemaker. She attended College Park Free Will Baptist Church until she wasn?t able to attend due to health.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. D.C. Byrd; two daughters: Bernice Moore and Sharon Street; three brothers: Johnnie, Steve and Peter Phipps; three sisters: Lutishia Phipps, Myrtle Heaton and Lexie Garland.

    She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Darrell and Cinda Byrd; two sons-in-law, Fred Moore and Richard Street; four granddaughters and their husbands, Kristi and Kevin Colbaugh, Kara and Josh McGee, Dawn and Rev. Nathan Jennings, Mandy and Wes Greer; eight great grandchildren, Nick, Tyler, Kaylee, Ashlee, Abby, Shay, Riley and Elisha; one brother, Coy Phipps; sister-in-laws, Lena Phipps, Georgia King and Ida Hanuvoski; and one brother-in-law, D.H. Byrd and his wife, Betty; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

    The family will receive friends Saturday, June 30, 2012, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Morris-Baker Funeral Home with services immediately following at 8:00 p.m. with Rev Nathan Jennings and Rev. Ray Colbaugh officiating. Music will be provided by Wes and Mandy Greer, Megan Harsh and New Liberty Quartet.

    Burial will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Park, Sunday, July 1, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be: Kevin Colbaugh, Josh McGee, Wes Greer, Nick Colbaugh, Tyler Carrier, Ron Barnett, Ronnie Heaton. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of her and Rev. Byrd?s former Churches and employees of Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

    The family would like to thank Judy Deloach and the staff of Ivy Hall for the loving and wonderful care they gave our Mother and Grandmother while she was there. Their kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.
