Grover Cleveland McCoury, 70, husband of Mrs. Hazel Hughes McCoury, Thomasville, RD 1, was dead on arrival Monday at 2 p.m. at Hanover General Hospital. Dr. C. L. Hartman, deputy county coroner, attributed death to heart illness.
Born at Bakersville, N.C. he was a son of the late Decatur and Celia (Hopson) McCoury and was engaged in farming. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hanover.
Also Surviving are; Six children, Grover C. McCoury Jr., and Jerry McCoury, both of Thomasville, RD 1; Mrs. Margaret Hoover and Mrs. Jeanette Myers, both of East Berlin; R. Grove R 3; Delano McCoury Glen Rock R 1; 19 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; four brothers and a sister: Emmett McCoury, Spring Grove R 3; Floyd McCoury, Grandview Road, Hanover; Harry McCoury, Elizabethtown, Tenn; Hanford McCoury, Unicoi, Ky., and Mrs. Geneva Hill, Baltimore.
The funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from the Wetzel Funeral Home, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover. Officiating will be the Rev. John S. Oldfield, minister of the Yorktowne Chapel of York. Burial will be in Penn Memorial Gardens, Hanover.

UNICOI — Ruby Harrell Garland, age 92, of Unicoi went home to Heaven today, August 24, 2015, to join her beloved Alvin.

Ruby was born February 20, 1923, to the late Charlie and Daisy McCurry Harrell in North Carolina and came to Unicoi with her parents in a covered wagon. She was an employee of Southern Pottery for sixteen years.

Ruby was a member of Unicoi Baptist Church where she served as Treasurer and Sunday School Teacher for twenty years.

Other than her parents and brother, Buford Harrell, Ruby was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-three years, Alvin Garland in 2010.

Ruby loved life on the farm with Alvin and said it always gave her comfort and peace.

She leaves behind a sister-in-law, Bernice Harrell of Manchester, TN; a brother-in-law, Ralph Garland and wife, Joan of Unicoi; several nieces and nephews including a special niece and caregiver, Sharon Daniels and husband, Bob of Johnson City; a great niece, Julie Dugger and husband, Scott and their son, Taw, who were with Ruby daily; good friends Walter and Charlotte Burkett and son, Walter, Jr.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 26, 2015, from 12:00 noon until the hour of service at the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Garry Edwards will officiate at the 1:00 PM funeral service. Music will be provided by Inez Chandler.

Honorary pallbearer will be J. D. Whitson. Active pallbearers will be Walter Burkett, Walter Burkett, Jr., Scott Dugger, Ford Wilson, and Mike Garland.

Committal service will follow in the Roselawn Memory Garden, Johnson City.

A special thanks to all the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care staff for their care and kindness to Ruby.

ELIZABETHTON - On the morning of Thursday, September 2, 2021, Phyllis Angelina White, age 78, of Elizabethton, TN passed away at Life Care Center of Elizabethton. Phyllis was born on October 10th, 1943 to Roy and Gladys McCourry in Unicoi County, TN. Phyllis met and fell in love with Gary M. White and the couple married in 1962. The couple enjoyed traveling across the globe in service of the United States Navy. Their oldest son, Gary Jr. was born while they were deployed in Spain and their youngest son, Shannon Eugene came into the world during their deployment to Norfolk, Virginia. The White’s lived many years in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Charleston, SC, Ayden, NC, Miami, FL and finally returning home to East Tennessee. Phyllis was dedicated to family and avidly researched their family trees. Phyllis had a big heart and loved animals. She enjoyed working in vet clinics and caring for many strays.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Gary, of the home; two sons, Gary Grindstaff and wife Evans and Shannon and Grindstaff and wife Ailyn and four loving grandchildren, Rhodes White, Tristan White, Rhodes August White and Angel White.

A funeral service to honor the life of Phyllis Angelina White will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 11, 2021 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Chris Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends between the hours of 1:00 P.M. and 2:00 P.M. prior to the service on Saturday.

The graveside service and committal will follow the funeral service on Saturday, September 11, 2021 in the Ritchie Cemetery, Elizabethton. Pallbearers will be selected by family and friends.

JoAnn B McKinney, age 87 of North Hwy 226, Bakersville, NC passed away December 7, 2011 at her home. A native of Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Dewey and Bertie Gouge Buchanan. She was a Veteran of the United States Navy and retired from Mitchell County Department of Social Services. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a sister Willie McCullough and a brother Melvin A Buchanan.

Survivors include her two sons Daniel (Dan) McKinney and wife Angie and Chris McKinney and wife Lisa, all of Kingsport, TN, two sisters Jessie B. Hughes, of Bakersville, NC and Nell B. Johnston, of Fredricksburg, Texas, and one brother Dewey D. Buchanan Jr, of Morristown, TN, and four grandchildren Jessica, Luke, Jeremiah and Daniel.

Funeral services will be held Saturday December 10, 2011 at 1:00PM in Friendship Baptist Church with Don Ford and Bobby L. McKinney officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Green Young Cemetery with Military Funeral Honors being conducted by The North Carolina Honor Guard.

MORRISTOWN - It is with a sad heart that we have to announce the passing of Dewey David Buchanan Jr., of Morristown, TN at 1:54 a.m. May 10th. Children Dana, Rebecca and David Buchanan survive him. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Sabra, and was the last surviving member of his family. Brother, Melvin, sisters, Nail, Willie, Jesse and JoAnn also preceded him in death. His passing came 2 months before his 95th birthday as he outlived all other family members even as far back to his Father, Dewey David Buchanan, Sr., who lived to be 93 years old. When asked how old he was, he would always tell people he was Four Score, 10+4…or for those who don’t understand how to add up a score, it would total 94.

The nickname his siblings gave him at an early age was June when he was growing up in Bakersville, NC. His love for the Mountains, trout fishing, hiking, gardening and just plain enjoying God’s creation was extraordinary.

One of many amazing accomplishments was his honorable service in the Navy, where he served during the Korean Conflict/WWII. When he told his war stories of his service, he often commanded the room because he was an awesome storyteller! During his time in the Navy, he was a Radio Signalman and at any time of the day, he could still spell anything in Morse code!

He learned at an early age to work hard, as his father, Dewey Sr. delivered the mail for 32 years in the mountains of North Carolina and during that time he only missed 2 days of work. I heard this story at his funeral about those two missed days. He had to travel over mountain to pick up the mail and on his way back to his mail route his car ran off the road on Iron Mountain during a terrible snowstorm. He had to walk home and the next day he took his mule to pull the car out of the snowbank. These were the only two days he missed delivering the mail! Our Dad also had this work ethic and his advice was “to always work hard and earn the respect and pay from your employer”. Dad represented this profile well, since he actually retired three times! He is also survived by 13 office wives that have been there for him during the good and bad times.

Dewey and Sabra had a wonderful love story that lasted over 64 years. They shared the same birthday on July 28, four years apart. He told the story that when they first met, Sabra actually went a date with his brother Melvin. When he discovered they shared the same birthday, this is what truly attracted him to her and began their strong connection that launched our family tree.

On this rainy, cool day in May 2021, in Tennessee, we have faith in the word of God in 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 that the same love that united believers in the Lord in this life will turn our loss into triumph when we are reunited with God and lost loved ones in eternity.

Dewey will be buried alongside Sabra at Mountain Home National Cemetery at 10 am on Monday, May 17, 2021 with Rev. Lester D. Lattany officiating.
