DEATHS
Stanley Thomas Cress, 85, of Mountain City, Rt. 1, (Corn Creek Community) died in Johnson City Memorial Hospital, Sunday, 12:31 p.m., after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Johnson County, son of the late William B. and Eliza Shupe Cress. He was a retired sawmill operator, and a member of the Valley View Methodist Church.
Mr. Cress was married to the late Ollie Davis.
Surviving this marriage, are six sons, Layman, Clyde, Azel, S. T. and Henry Cress, all of Mountain City, and George Cress, California; four daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Moody, Zionville, N. C., Mrs. Myrtle Davidson, Devin, W. Va., Mrs. Ella Mae Osborne, Elkton, Md., and Mrs. Mary Alice Mitchell, Stubenville, O.
Mr. Cress was later married to Mrs. Dorothy Sexton Cress who survives, along with four sons, Joe, Jimmy, Tony and Terry, all of Mountain City; three daughters, Mary, Shirley and Liza Cress, all of Mountain City; one sister, Mrs. Mamie Cartwright, Cleveland, O.; 37 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted from the Lewis Gentry Funeral Home Chapel, Tuesday, 2 p.m., with the Rev. Robert Gillespie, Rev. Thomas Gatton and Mrs. Bluford Cole, minister, officiating.
Burial was in the Cress Cemetery.
Pall-bearers[sic] were grandsons, Raymond, Douglas, Jimmy, Robin, and Donnie Cress, and James Lefler.
Flower-bearers were friends and neighbors
Lewis Gentry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MOUNTAIN CITY — James Laymon 'Jimmy' Cress, age 70, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2015, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

He was born on November 29, 1944, to the late Laymon and Ruth Parsons Cress.

In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by a son, Thomas James Cress; and a sister, Jill Cress.

Jimmy is survived by sisters, Joan Stout, Janet Payne and Martha Elvidge; brothers, Robert Cress and wife Joyce and Jack Cress and wife Diane; special friend, Annis Jessee; several nieces and nephews; his Sheltie Dog and pal, Brownie.

After graduating from Johnson County High School in 1962, Jimmy joined the United States Air Force, where he served for 4 years, during which time he was stationed at Loring AFB in Maine.

Following his military career, Jimmy moved back to Mountain City and attended ETSU, receiving a degree in Accounting. He was the Town of Mountain City Recorder from 1974-1977. He then went to work for D.K. Burke and Associates Accounting Firm of Johnson City, where he remained until his retirement in 2014.

Jimmy had a love and passion for his country and his fallen brothers and sisters. He located and published a directory of military veterans buried in Johnson County from WWI to present day. Jimmy was instrumental in placing US. Flags on their graves during Flag Day celebrations.

It was Jimmy's wishes to be cremated and that no formal services are held.

Laymon married Anna Ruth Parsons about 1938 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. Anna (daughter of Nineveh Colfax Parsons and Martha Lou Vinnie "Mattie" Shull) was born on 26 Jun 1925 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee; died on 16 Jan 1984 in , Watauga County, North Carolina, North Carolina; was buried in Sunset Memorial Park, , Johnson County, Tennessee. Clyde Cress, age 92, of Mountain City, passed away Monday, February 12, 2007, at his residence with his family by his side.

Clyde was born on March 13, 1914, in Johnson County to the late Stanley and Ollie Davis Cress.

He was a retired carpenter and master woodworker. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed. He was a member of Liberty Christian Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Allen Cress; three sisters, Myrtle Davis, Pauline Cress and Ella Mae Osborne; and five brothers, Emmet, Laymon, Azel, Bobby and Henry Cress.

Clyde married Dorothy Payne on 9 Jun 1935 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. Dorothy (daughter of Charley Lee Payne and Della J. Mr. A C "Bud" Cress, 79, of Johnson City, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2015, at NHC HealthCare in Johnson City.

Mr. Cress was a Johnson County native and the son of the late Clyde and Dorothy Payne Cress.

He was preceded in death by sons, Mark and Michael; and a brother, Allen Cress.

Mr. Cress retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant in 1974. His overseas assignments were Germany, India, and Vietnam. He received three meritorious service medals, six commendation medals, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, five good conduct medals, and numerous other awards.

He also retired from the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center in 1995, where he worked in the engineering service as an accountant.

Mr. Cress was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by: his wife of 33 years, JoAnn Snapp Cress; daughter, Cathy Cress Moore of Shreveport, LA; three sisters, Margie Halsey and Elsie Parsons of Hickory, NC and Paulette Morefield of Mountain City; mother-in-law, Lurlia Snapp; brothers-in-law, Wendell Snapp and Mike Snapp; special nieces, Christie Snapp Pohto, Shelley Snapp Mannering, and Lauren Snapp Waddill, all of Johnson City; niece, Donna Lipford of Concord, NC; and nephews, David Snapp, Daniel Snapp, Jack Pohto, and Andrew Clawson.

The Cress family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Monday, September 28, 2015, in Morris-Baker Funeral Home.

Following the visitation, family and friends will proceed to Mountain Home National Cemetery for a 1 p.m. graveside service. Rev. Donald Page will officiate. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The Boone Dam Post # 4933 will accord military honors.

Raymond Cress, age 82, of Mountain City, TN, passed away on Friday, February 10, 2023 at Mountain City Care Center. He was born on January 27, 1941 to the late Azel and Hazel Cress in Johnson County, TN. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Douglas Cress and infant sister, Lois Ann Cress.

Raymond enjoyed woodworking, collecting knives, and tinkering with old cars, especially his ‘55 Chevrolet. He was a member of First Christian Church.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Carolyn Danner Cress; sons, Tommy Cress (Wanda) and Jamie Cress; grandchildren, Alisha Norris (Joey), Matt Cress (Kayla), Savanna Cress, Mychael Cress, and Brianna Cress; great-grandchildren, Cooper Cress, Dominic Kelley, Eli Norris, and Mason Galyean; sisters, Maxine Hall (Barton), and Carolyn Pardue; brother, Glenn Cress, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at the Cress Cemetery with Danny Cullop to officiate.

Douglas Edward Cress, 78, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2020 at his home. He was born on June 12, 1942 to the late Azel and Hazel Cress in Johnson County, TN. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughters, Cindy Guinn and Anette Cress.

Those left to cherish his memories include his sisters, Maxine Hall and husband Barton, Carolyn Pardue; brothers, Raymond Cress and wife Carolyn, Glenn Cress; grandson, Chad Guinn and several nieces and nephews.

The graveside service and burial was held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at the Cress Cemetery with friend Dick Stout officiating. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

MOUNTAIN CITY - Richard Michael 'Mike' 'Club" Blevins, age 67, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

He was born on September 7, 1949 to Earlene Cress Blevins and the late Dick Blevins. In addition to his father, Mike was preceded in death by a brother, David Edward Blevins.

Mike was a contractor for many years and in 1978 he opened his own restaurant in Mountain City, Mike's Bar-B-Que. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed his guns and reloading his own ammunition.

In addition to his mother, Earlene; Mike is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Sarah Blevins of Leland, NC; special friend like a son, Robbie Bradley of Elizabethton, TN, Boy Dog, two nieces, Nikki Blevins Sawyers and Brandy Blevins Childester, mother of his son, Beverly Blevins of Lottsburg, VA; and many, many special friends.
