    Notes:

    Albert Tipton married the daughter of a Baptist Preacher, named Jane C. McClurd on January 18, 1875.

    Albert was the sixth child born to his parents.
    He passed at age 81.

    Family lore has it that this family is the origin of the name "Seven Devils", now known as a popular ski resort town. Family legend tells the story of 'seven devils' and 'seven angels' born in the family.

    These were the seven daughters and seven sons born to Billy and Eliza Shell Winters.

    Pansy W. Shook, born January 30th, 1922 went Home to the Lord, her husband, family and friends on March 26, 2021.

    Pansy was born in Minneapolis, in the High Country of North Carolina to Jim and Nola Winters. She had a twin sister, Grace Bevan and sisters, Emma Caraway, Elsie Hall; brothers, William, Albert, Sam, Ray and Craig. Pansy grew up on Big Horse Creek and attended church at the Lewis Chapel there.

    After World War II, Pansy married Verne H. Shook in 1947, also from Minneapolis. They lived briefly on Big Horse Creek before moving north to Metuchen, New Jersey to take advantage of the housing construction boom in that area.

    Pansy was a homemaker while raising her daughters prior to working for the Chanel Corporation in Piscataway, New Jersey until her retirement at age 65. She was an active member of Christ Community Church in Piscataway, as well as one of their longest standing members.

    She enjoyed staying active gardening, antiquing and sharing her happy memories of North Carolina.

    Pansy went to spend the winter in Kauai with her daughter LaVerne in 2016, as she had often done in the past - only to remain there.

    She is survived by her two daughters, LaVerne Bishop of Kalaheo, Kauai, Yvonne Prohaska (husband-Bernard) of East Brunswick, New Jersey; and granddaughter, Ariel Lilinoe Bishop.

    Visitation will be held on April 24th from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, 296 Ash Street, Newland, N.C. 28657 to be followed by a 12:00 graveside ceremony at Mount Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, 1161 Balm Highway, Banner Elk, N.C.

    She will be missed by all.

    Howard S. Gouge Sr., 88, Dave Buck Road, Johnson City, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Roan Mountain, he was a son of the late Dosser and Minnie Winters Gouge. Mr. Gouge was a retired produce salesman and carpenter. He was
    of the Baptist faith. He had served in the U.S. Army and Coast Guard and served in the United States Navy during World War II.

    Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. D.C. Byrd and the Rev. John Vance officiating.
    Graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Gouge Family Cemetery (Heaton Ridge Road), Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday, will be Buddy Davis, Danny Davis, Nathan Gouge, Patrick Gouge, Joshua Gouge and Eugene Gouge.

    Honorary pallbearers will be his nieces and nephews.

    Delestine Winters McKinney, 79, Perkins Hollow Road, Roan Mountain, died Sunday, August 3, 2003, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness.

    Mrs. McKinney was a native of Elk Park, N.C., and the daughter of the late Corbett Winters and Nina Greene Parish. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Howard McKinney.

    The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 6, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. John Stevens and the Rev. Keith Gwyn officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Melody Trio. The family will receive friends at the Rhododendron Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service.

    Friends may also call at the home of a son, the Rev. Jeff McKinney, 104 Ellis Hollow Road, Roan Mountain. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 7, at Richardson (Morgan Branch Church) Cemetery in Roan Mountain.

    Robert Glenn “Bob” Winters of Lenoir, NC, passed away Friday, May 27, 2022 at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

    Born August 21, 1938 in Avery County to the late William Stephen Winters and Ruby Holsclaw Winters, Causby, Freeman In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Lois Alta Ward Winters; and brother, Larry “Johnny” Winters.

    Bob was owner of Bob’s Barber Shop in Granite Falls, he barbered for over 50 Years.

    He is survived by his son, Scott Winters and wife, Connie, of Granite Falls; his daughter, Lori Scott and husband, Gary, of Granite Falls; three grandchildren, Tyler Winters and wife Brandy, Kindley Scott, Westin Scott; two great grandchildren, Averie Winters, Blaiklee Winters; and sister-in-law, Patsy Winters of Avery County.


    A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2022, 5:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. David Payne and Scott Winters officiating.

    Larry Burton Winters, age 78, of the Frank Community, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2021. A native of Avery County, he was the son of the late William and Ruby Holtsclaw Winters. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry "Little John" Winters, Jr.

    Larry loved his family and enjoyed camping, deer hunting, and especially eating fried chicken.

    He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Patsy Ollis Winters; daughter, Jacqueline Winters of Newland; son, Mick Winters of Newland; grandchildren: Jesse Stamey, Jason Stamey, and Brittany Burrows; brother, Robert Winters of Granite Falls.

    A memorial service will be held at a later date.

    Jess Brewer, age 76, of Elk Park, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 24th, 2011 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center. A native of Avery County, Jess was a son of the late Grady and Dorothy Winters Brewer and the husband of 54 years to Carolyn Howell Brewer. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Gypsie Lee Jones.

    He loved his children and grandchildren and enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a "people person" who loved to hunt, fish, and was an avid outdoorsman who always said he felt closer to God when he was in the woods.

    Surviving are his loving wife, Carolyn Howell Brewer; a daughter and special son-in-law; a son; two grandsons; a granddaughter; two sisters and their husbands; and a brother-in-law.

    A memorial service was held at 6 p. m. on Monday, November 28th at Lower Shell Creek Christian Church in Roan Mountain, Tennessee.

    Left to cherish her memory are her Husband of 57 years: Joe H. She is also survived by a host of Cousins, Nieces, and Nephews.

    Evanell's greatest mission in life was her 45-year nursing career. She worked for several years at Cannon Hospital, then for Dr. Robert Smith, Dr. Freddy Martin and Dr. David Kimmel. While working for Dr. Smith, she and a co-worker, Nola Mae Cook, started dressing up in costumes for Halloween. Evanell dressed as a witch, clown, bike rider or hobo, anything to amuse the patients, especially the elderly. They made sure to get an appointment near Halloween! One day, Dr. Smith was heard making a comment that "at least it wasn't Halloween!" So, Evanell and Lola Mae dressed up like him! Their picture even made the local newspaper!

    While working with Dr. Freddy Martin, Evanell and their medical team made more than 15 mission trips to Mexico. They took medical supplies, clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, etc. Evanell usually came back with an empty suitcase and only the clothes on her back! Later they were not allowed to cross the border with medicines.

    Evanell was also a gifted wedding cake baker. She started out baking and decorating for friends and family, but soon had a big business.

    Our world has been blessed by having Evanell in our lives.

    Visitation for Evanell will take place at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2019, at Valley Haven Baptist Church. Funeral Service will begin at 2 p.m. following the visitation with Pastor James W. Hughes Jr. and Rev. Don Stines officiating.

    Interment will follow in the Valley Haven Baptist Church Cemetery.
