Ethel Jenkins Hyder, 85, 15 Tester Rd., Elizabethton, died Sunday, 27Dec1998, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home.
Mrs. Hyder was a native of Carter Co. & the daughter of the late Rod & Mollie Matherly Jenkins. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Tom Jenkins.
Mrs. Hyder was a former employee of the Bemberg Corporation & a lifelong homemaker, wife & mother. She was a faithful member of Zion Baptist Church for approximately 60 years.

Rod "Big Lou" Jenkins, 69, 114 Brittany Drive, Elizabethton, died Thursday, February 17, 2000, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, following a brief illness.

Mr. Jenkins was a lifelong resident of Carter County and a son of the late Rod Jenkins Sr. and Molly Matherly Jenkins. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Tom Jenkins, and a sister, Ethel Hyder.

Mr. Jenkins was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a retired employee of Inland Container Corporation with 30 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Barnett Jenkins, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary W. and Lisa Jenkins, Elizabethton; a daughter, Joyce "Joy" Holtsclaw, Huntsville, Ala.; a sister, Frankie Odom, Elizabethton; and four grandchildren, Jessica Jenkins, Lance Jenkins and Logan Jenkins, all of Elizabethton, and Taylor Holtsclaw, Huntsville, Ala. Several nieces and nephews also survive.


JENKINS -- A graveside service for Rod "Big Lou" Jenkins, 69, 114 Brittany Drive, Elizabethton, who died Thursday, February 17, 2000, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 20, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. ELIZABETHTON - Nellena "Nell" Jenkins McQueen, 93, of Elizabethton, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2016, peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by her dear sister, Babe Ruth Jenkins Williams of Newnan, GA. Aunt Nell will be missed by her nieces and nephews: Larry Timbs, Jr., Marcella Rowe, Cheryl Timbs, Edward Timbs, Sharon Ruth Woodard, Teresa Davis, Shelley Irwin and Jay Wilkinson as well as several great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-two years, Jack C. McQueen, her brother and sister, J. N. Jenkins and Dixie Nadine Jenkins Timbs and her parents, Ed and Maude Jenkins.

Mrs. McQueen, who loved to solve crossword puzzles and sit on her porch, graduated from Hampton High School and completed secretarial training at Steed College in Elizabethton. She worked until retirement as a secretary. She liked to watch old westerns on TV and enjoyed visits from her family and friends. Nell was a life-long member of Valley Forge Christian Church where she taught Sunday school for over twenty years and was active in the Ladies Council. She leaves behind many loving church family friends who cared about her and visited often.

Nell's home was always open to family and friends. Her trust in the Lord, her humor and calming presence remains a gift to all who knew her. She will always be remembered for her pleasure of laughter, appreciation of good food, a cup of hot coffee and her love of great conversation. Her family finds comfort in knowing she is at rest with the Lord and her lifetime companion, her husband, Jack.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton.

A Committal and Entombment service for Mrs. McQueen will follow the visitation on Tuesday, at 2:30 PM in the Mausoleum of Hope at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. David Siebenaler, Minister, officiating. Dixie Nadine Jenkins Timbs, 87, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 4th, in Elizabethton.
Now in the arms of angels in heaven, she had led a full, exciting, interesting life.
She was the glue and the rock-solid anchor that held her family together. She was also tenderhearted, kind, soft-spoken and gentle in spirit.
Never boastful or loud, even when saddened, she kept some things to herself, preferring always to look on the positive side of any situation and always, ALWAYS holding out hope for a better day.
"This is the Day that the Lord has made! We will rejoice and be glad in it!" she often beamed.
She was a beautiful, loving, caring, strong-willed woman who cherished a good cup of hot steaming coffee in the morning, eagerly read the local daily newspaper, and who always had room at her table for another guest.
She prepared delicious Sunday lunch meals. Always her kitchen door was open for lunch and fellowship after church. Her soup beans, corn bread and fresh vegetables, cakes and cobblers satisfied many a hungry palate.
Her love and affection for her husband, children, sisters, brother, grandchildren and great grands was unconditional.
She was also a gifted writer — a trait she passed on to her others in her family.
At Hampton High School as a teenager, she had been a star on the girls' basketball team.
She was the middle daughter of the late Ed Jenkins who died in 1962. And throughout her life, she had her father's upbeat disposition in her DNA. She once wrote of him: "His cheerfulness sometimes did more for the sick than their physicians could do. He was a ray of sunshine to the sick, depressed ... and a beacon of light for the needy."
She could have been writing about herself.
Mrs. Timbs, a long-time member of the Lady's Class at Valley Forge Christian Church, was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, decorated World War II and Korean War veteran Lawrence C. Timbs. Mr. Timbs, a native of Fish Springs, Tennessee, passed away at the age of 90 in January 2012.
Mrs. Timbs' brother, J.N., also preceded her in death. He died in 1999.
During his career in the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Timbs and his beloved wife Dixie, with a baby on the way or one or more in tow, would criss-cross the country. They resided, among other places, in Smyrna, Tenn.; Niceville, Fla.; Austin, Texas; Nagoya, Japan; Maryville, Tenn; and Colorado Springs, Colo.
When Mr. Timbs retired from the Air Force in the early 1960s, he and Dixie returned to Elizabethton, where Mr. Timbs worked as a seasonal park ranger for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
He and Dixie next relocated to Newport News, Virginia. They lived and worked there for several years before relocating back to Dixie's parents' old home place in the Valley Forge community between Hampton and Elizabethton.
After living abroad and all over the United States, they thoroughly enjoyed reconnecting with their Tennessee roots — becoming active in the Valley Forge Christian Church, where Dixie's father, Ed, had been an elder and deacon for 40+ years. They gardened, took short camping trips in their VW van, porch sat, bird-watched, enjoyed their children and grandchildren and extended family and got involved in local politics. Dixie, as devout a Democrat as her husband was a Republican, noted with a chuckle that she relished canceling out her hubby's vote. Both Dixie and her husband readily served for several years as Election Day workers at Valley Forge Elementary School voting place.
Dixie always celebrated the fact that in Valley Forge they had the privilege of living in the shadow of one of the most beautiful mountains in East Tennessee. "Jenkins Mountain (is) 2,000 feet of awe-inspiring scenery," Dixie wrote in her 2007 self-published book "The People of Valley Forge: A Collection of Memories." "You will not find anything more majestic or breathtaking."
Perhaps it was living so close to towering Jenkins Mountain (named after one of Dixie's ancestors) that inspired her to write another self-published book, her 2004 "A Rugged Trip Up Jenkins Mountain And The Old Barn." In this illustrated, tersely penned little book, Dixie recalls what it was like to grow up exploring, climbing and playing on the mountain with her two sisters, Nell and Ruth, and with her brother, J.N., whom she described as "full of laughter and happiness."
Dixie wrote engagingly in her book about how she and her siblings got up front and close with all manner of wildlife, including a red-tailed hawk, bear cubs, honey bees, blueberries and huckleberries, wild bleeding hearts, rhododendron, mountain laurel, a great horned owl, a cotton-tailed rabbit, white-tailed deer and "a big black snake that licked out his tongue and started slithering away" when Dixie, barefoot, stepped on it.
Many days, after playing outside to their hearts' content, they ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in their "girls club house" in the barn; Dixie, Baby Ruth and Nell had plastered the inside of it with pictures cut out of a magazine. The little ones also would often dip their feet into the cold clear water of the nearby Doe River.
They were the blessed children of Ed Jenkins ("a man small in stature but a giant in the eyes of those whose lives he touched") and Maude Simerly Jenkins; the latter, a skilled quilt maker, loved to cook hot biscuits from scratch and serve gravy and grape jelly every morning for breakfast. Maude also prepared meals for anyone in the community who had a death in the family. God couldn't have given a child better parents, Dixie often said.
Survivors of Dixie Nadine Jenkins Timbs are her daughter, Cheryl Ann Timbs and husband, Crawford; son, Larry Timbs Jr. and wife, Patsy Robinson Timbs; son, Edward Timbs and wife, Carmen Timbs; sisters, Nell McQueen and Baby Ruth Williams; grandsons, Hugh Anderson, Josh Anderson and wife, Debra Anderson; grandson, Zach Anderson; grandson, Crawford Timbs III; grandsons, Justin Timbs and wife, Amanda Timbs, and Jesse Timbs; granddaughters, Sharyn Calcavecchio, Dorothy Yeung and husband, Patrick Yeung, Elizabeth Roberta Timbs, Jamie Timbs McQueen and husband, Jason McQueen.
Also surviving are great grandchildren Antonina, Gabriella, Angelo and Giancarlo Calcavecchio; Lucy Brooke and Cecilia Clare Yeung; Dylan, Keelan Nadine and Brennyn Avery Anderson, Mason McQueen and Jase Bryson McQueen, Khloe Timbs, and Joselyn and Lane Timbs.
Guests may sign the register and attend the viewing 1 p.m.-2 p.m., Monday, July 8, at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton.

JOHNSON CITY - Lena Mae Holden Lewis, 91, Johnson City, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, surrounded by family, Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at her home. She was born in Elizabethton to the late Fred Frazier and Gertrude Loveless Holden. Lena was in food service and worked in school cafeteria’s serving food to students, which she loved very much. She was member of Bethel Church of Christ. Lena loved to travel with her family, especially to Dollywood and Disney World. She was always ready to jump in the car and go. Lena loved bringing her family together on Sundays with her wonderful cooking. Lena never complained and her family thought that was a very special and caring trait that she had.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Henry Lewis, Jr.; brothers, Coolidge Calvin Holden, Ralph Holden, Billy Joe Holden, James Delman Holden.

David A. Holden, 82, went home to the Lord on July 14th 2022.

David was born in Jonesborough, Tennessee, on November 22nd 1939. He was a godly man and was a member of East Unaka Christian Church. David loved attending church and loved spending time with his family. He was retired from the Rainbo Baking company, where he worked as an operator.

David was preceded in death by his loving wife Shirley A. Holden; parents, Fred and Gertie Holden; brothers, Billy Joe Holden, James D. Holden, Calvin Collage Holden, Ralph Holden and sister Lena Mae Lewis.

David is survived by his brother, John F. Holden; daughters, Tina Robin Rhymer and Kimberly Dawn Rush and Todd Higgins; grandchild Timothy Mack Rhymer Jr.; special friends, Porter Laws, Richard Percell, Gay Penix, Jerry and Donna Whitaker, Charles Mosier; special niece Shirley Leonard and several nieces and nephews and his church family.

The Holden family will receive friends on Monday July 18th from 12:00 pm till 2:00 pm at Tetrick Funeral services in Johnson City with a funeral service at 2:00 pm. A graveside committal service will be held afterward at 3:00 pm at Washington County Memory Gardens. Minister Wayne Emory will be officiating. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Bill Jenkins, age 96, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Thursday, March 9, 2017 in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home. A native of Elizabethton, TN he was the son of the late Roscoe and Eliza Forbes Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins retired in 1982 after more than twenty years from the Elizabethton Star newspaper. He loved sports and writing sports columns for the Elizabethton Star. He was a member of Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Jenkins was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He fought in every major campaign in the European Theatre and was a Purple Heart recipient.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Flora Hall Jenkins and his twin brother, Henry Jenkins. Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Billy Jenkins, Elizabethton; a daughter, Nancy Ann Chandler and husband Kenneth, Jacksonville, FL; a grandson, Chance Chandler, Jacksonville, FL; an aunt, Gladys Snyder, Jonesborough, TN; a nephew, Hank Jenkins and wife Donna, Elizabethton; a niece, Elaine Stout, Johnson City, TN; great-nephews, Scott Stout, Greenville, SC; Brian Stout, Johnson City, TN; Andy Jenkins, Elk Mills; Randall Jenkins and wife Kim; Daniel Jenkins and Kyle Jenkins, all of Elizabethton. Other nieces and nephews and several members of his wife's family also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Bill Jenkins will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Monday, March 13, 2017 in Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends at the Church from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Monday prior to the service.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 14, 2017 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Tony Greene, Larry McKinney, Kyle Jenkins, Daniel Jenkins, Randall Jenkins and Andy Jenkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Abel, Terry Abel, Harvey Norris, Brian Stout and Scott Stout. Everyone will meet at Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services at 10:15 A.M. on Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery.

Kay Church, age 63, of Eliz-a-beth-ton, went home to be with the Lord on March 18, 2015, from her res-i-dence.
Kay was a na-tive of Carter County and was a daugh-ter of the late But-ler and Mary Scalf Jen-kins. In ad-di-tion to her par-ents, she was pre-ceded by three broth-ers, Le-roy Hill, De-nis Hill and Ricky Hill; a sis-ter, Della Mae Daven-port; and a brother-in-law, Bill El-li-ott.
Kay was the caf-e-te-ria man-ager at Hamp-ton Ele-men-tary School and was of the Bap-tist faith. She en-joyed spend-ing time with her grand-chil-dren and "her kids" at Hamp-ton Ele-men-tary, cook-ing and spend-ing her sum-mers by the swim-ming pool.
Left to cher-ish her mem-ory is her hus-band, Rick Church, of the home; two daugh-ters, Cindy Church Steven-son and her hus-band, Doug, and Re-nee McNeal and her hus-band, Steve, all of Eliz-a-beth-ton; her grand-chil-dren, Tessa Steven-son and Ryleigh McNeal; her broth-ers, Gary Hill and wife, Judy, Terry Scalf and wife Gale, Paul Hill and wife, Carol, and Ce-cil Hill and wife, Norma; and her sis-ters, Sue El-li-ott and Betty Mathes and hus-band, Chuck, all of Eliz-a-beth-ton. Terry Dean Scalf, 60, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Friday, August 28, 2015, at the Select Medical Hospital, Bristol, following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Butler and Mary Scalf Jenkins. Mr. Scalf was a brick mason and a member of Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing with his musical friends, playing golf and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis Hill and Leroy Hill; a sister, Kay Church; and his father-in-law, Ray Wellman. Survivors include his wife, Gale Scalf, of the home; two daughters, Terra Scalf, of the home, and Deana Scalf, Elizabethton; a son, Travis Scalf and his wife Rosella, Elizabethton; five granddaughters, Katy, Brooke, Kyndal, Abby and Kymber; a grandson, Koty; four brothers, Cecil Hill, Gary Hill, Paul Hill and Carl Clark, all of Elizabethton; and two sisters, Betty Mathes and Sue Elliott, both of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A service to honor the life of Terry Dean Scalf will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 1, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Shane Waters officiating. Music will be under the direction of his musical friends. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service, or at the residence at anytime. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, in the Wellman Cemetery. JOHNSON CITY - Harold Dean Jenkins, 80, Johnson City went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Cornerstone Healthcare Center, Johnson City after a brief illness with Cancer.

He was born on August 16, 1936 in Elizabethton to the late Robert C. & Dorothy Mae Kemp Jenkins. He was retired from American Water Heater Corporation after 36 years of service. Mr. Jenkins was a member of the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church, Johnson City. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Rondal Eugene Jenkins.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years: Faye Ellison Jenkins. One Step-Daughter: Dora Mae Hubbard, five step-grandchildren, 8 step-great grandchildren and five step great-great grandchildren. One Sister: Shelia Day & husband Albert. Several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Crowe officiating. David was born February 27, 1927 and son of the late Ira and Mary Ruth Jenkins Buck. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Christine Buck (Broyles), three brothers, Edgar Buck, O'Dell Buck and J.D. Buck and one sister, Frances Hicks.

He was a member of The Westside Christian Church.

Mr. Buck was a United States Army Veteran having served during WWII & Korean War.

Left to cherish his memory, two sons, David Jr. and wife Yvonne, Greenlane, PA and Ricky and fiancée Sarah, Jonesborough; two daughters, Beverly White and husband Dave, Jonesborough and Sandra Schultz and Mel Yantz, Lakeland, FL; eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one sister, Faye Miller, Narvon, PA; brother, Arthur and wife, Brenda, Johnson City and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 pm Monday, November 6, 2017 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Palma Bennett, Minister and Minister John Wade officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Monday prior to the service.

J.D. was a native of Johnson City. He was a son of the late Ira Nathaniel and Mary Ruth Jenkins Buck.

J.D. retired from Fluor Daniels Construction of Kingsport.

He was a member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: sister, Frances Buck Hicks, of Jonesborough; and brothers, Odell Buck, of Jonesborough, and Edgar Buck, of Johnson City.
