DAN VINES
Dan Vines, 58 years old, a resident of Powder Branch, passed away this morning at his home at 4:15 after an illness of the past years. He and his family moved to Powder Branch a year ago, coming from Fish Springs where they had resided for the past 15 years.
He is survived by his wife Jane; two daughters, Hazel of the home and Mrs. Vickie Ham of Philadelphia; four sons, Pvt. Lee Vines in Sicily; and Pvt. Billy Vines of Panama, Dewey Vines of Fish Springs, and Raymond Vines of the home. He is also survived by four brothers, Arthur, James, both of Stoney Hollow, Thomas of Elk Mills and Charley Hicks, and a half-brother.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday afternoon at the Stony Hollow Christian church with the Rev. Johnny Hall and the Rev. Carl Smith officiating. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the North Funeral Home.

ELIZABETHTON — Hazel Norma Vines Smith, 83, Elizabethton, passed away Monday April 9, 2012, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel C. and Nancy Jane Potter Vines. She had lived in California from 1966 to 1989. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. She was a member of the C Street Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Edgar Eugene Smith, January 11, 1999; by a son: Eddie Smith; a daughter: Deloris Reline; and 12 brothers & sisters.

Mrs. Smith loved to go to the beach, loved to sing and watch wrestling on TV. Her little best friend: Cuddles.

Survivors include Two Daughters & Sons-in-Law: Dawn & Raymond "Butch" Ruby, Oshkosh, Wis., and Twana & Ernest Hively, Johnson City; Four Granddaughters: Desiree Portillo, Christy Ruby Moon, Deloris Hively Kane and Cathy Hively; Three Grandsons: Joshua Reline, Ernie Hively and David Ruby; 12 Great Grandchildren: Corbin, Conner, Jordan, Kate, William, Chase, Kyrstyn, Jason, Trinity, Taylor, Mark and Brenden; Several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Roby Ellis, Minister, officiating.

Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by the Congregation. Lexie A. Vines Trivett, 86, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Friday, January 3, 2014, after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Arthur and Geneva Vines; several brothers and sisters; and her husband, Clarence Trivett. Mrs. Trivett grew up in Flat Springs, Tennessee, and in 1947 married Clarence Trivett. His career took them to many places, but in 1955 they purchased and settled on a farm in Bristol, Tennessee. Her three loves in life were her faith in God, her family and her home. She gave her life to the Lord as a pre-teen and lived for Him thereafter. She was a member of Mt. Holston Baptist Church for the past fifty years and loved her church family dearly. She loved to sing in the choir and learned from her father to read shaped note music at an early age. Most family gatherings included singing, right up until her death. She read her Bible faithfully and taught her children many Bible verses. One of the highlights of her life was the trip she made to Israel in 1999. Mrs. Trivett retired from the Bristol Regional Medical Center, where she worked in the Birthing Center for thirty-five years. She loved every baby born there and while shopping often met mothers who remembered her. After she retired she spent time crocheting and tatting afghans, bedspreads, doilies, dolls and tablecloths that were either given as gifts or kept as family heirlooms. Her green thumb made the hill where the family home is located memorable. She is survived by four children, Carolyn (Steve) Bullock, Jacksonville, FL, Jimmy Trivett, Bluff City, Jeffrey Trivett, Piney Flats, Vicky (Phil) Keen, Bristol, TN; two sisters, Dora Wagner, Waconia, MN; Shirley (Allen) Harmon, Elk Park, NC; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. HAMPTON - Velma E. Tester, 74, of Hampton, went home to be with her Lord, on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. She was the daughter of the late William Oscar and Merle Hicks Morton and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen O. Tester, on June 22, 2010.

Mrs. Tester was a life time member of Union Baptist Church in Hampton where she served the church faithfully as a Sunday School teacher and a choir member. She loved to watch movies on the Hallmark Channel, and taking trips to Gatlinburg. She loved to spend time with her family and attend services at her church.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Scott Tester, and his wife, Rebecca, Hampton; four grandchildren, Marissa Marie Tester, Mark Scott Tester, Cody Ryan Keene, Dave Newton Ramey; a sister, Glenda Ranshaw, and her husband, Rev. Doug Ranshaw; brother-in-law, Richard Tester, and his wife, Betty, all of Hampton; three nieces, Tiffany Arnett, Amy Lowe, Amanda Blair; and a nephew, Travis Ranshaw. A special friend, Karen Matherly, also survives.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Tester will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Wesley Duncan, and Rev. Doug Ranshaw, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Union Baptist Church Choir. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service, and at the home of her son at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Travis Ranshaw, Mark Tester, Dave Ramey, Cody Keene, Eugene Keene and Ray Arnett. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Union Baptist Church. Mattie E. Lambert Lewis, 92, of Butler, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, from Johnson City Medical Center. Mattie was born in Poga, Tenn., to the late Hobert Charles and Etta Vines Lambert. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Charles "Ray" Lewis, on December 3, 2003; a brother, Allen Lambert; and a sister, Mae Lambert Harmon.
Mattie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was a member of Elizabethton Church of Christ. She enjoyed quilting, fishing, listening to music and also playing music.
Those left to cherish her sweet memories include a daughter, Devonia Lewis McKeehan and husband (and beloved son-in-law) Bobby of Elizabethton; a brother, George Lambert and his wife of Butler; a sister, Selma Vines, also of Butler; two grandchildren, Randy McKeehan of Stoney Creek and Lisa McKeehan Young of Johnson City; and five great-grandsons, Curtis Bradley McKeehan, Georgia, Randy Ray Pritchard, Chase Alan Young and Christopher Robert Young, all of Johnson City, and Dalton Ray McKeehan of Stoney Creek. George Dewey Lambert, 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at his home. George was born on March 13, 1939 to the late Hobert Charles Lambert and Etta May Vines Lambert. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Lambert; sisters, Mattie Lewis and Mae Harmon; and brother, Allen Lambert.
George enjoyed fishing and playing music. He also retired as a master metal craftsman.
Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 56 years, Jessie Trivette Lambert; son, Shane and wife Melissa; step-son, Michael Blevins and wife Debbie; step-daughter, Karen Vogler and husband John; sister, Selma Vines; grandchildren, Alyssa Lambert, Michelle Walsh (Michael), Matt Blevins (Ashley), Adam Stanton, Kala MacDowall (Luke) and CJ Lambert; and great-grandchildren, Faith, Avery and Aidan.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Dewey and Virtie Stines Vines.
Bob was a retired automotive mechanic, having been employed at Dixie Battery for 28 years. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church. He loved restoring old cars and gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde, Norman and Tony Vines, and a sister, Martha Guinn.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ann Keller Vines; three children, Bobby Vines Jr. and wife Angie, Elizabethton, Kenny Vines and wife Marta, Lexington, Ky., and Debbie Foster and husband David, Jonesborough; four grandchildren, Derrick, Eric and Andrew Vines and Devin Foster; two brothers, Gilbert Vines and wife Hilda, Elizabethton, and Danny Vines and wife Angela, Jonesborough; a sister, Vickie Snyder and husband Danny, Gray; several nieces and nephews; and his fur baby, Artie.

Clyde Lee Vines, age 1 year, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Vines, Route 3, Butler, died in Appalachian Hospital, Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock after an illness of 1 month.
Survivors are the parents; 2 brothers, Bobby and Norman Vines of Route 3, Butler; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Jennie Vines, Oak Grove; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Stines, Beech Creek, N. C.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock from the Poga Christian Church with the Rev. Reece in charge.
Burial will be made in the Poga Cemetery.
Active pallbearers and flower bearers will be selected from friends at the service.
The body will remain in the Roy Hathaway Funeral Home Chapel.

Toney Mack Vines, 67, of Hampton, went home to be with the Lord following an extended illness on Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Hermitage Health Center. He was a son of the late Dewey Vines and Virtie Stines Whaley and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Ann Green Vines; a great-grandson, Grayson Anderson; two brothers and one sister.
Toney worked at North American Rayon Corporation over 30 years and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. He enjoyed singing and watching his grandsons play basketball.
Those left to cherish his memory include one son, Anthony Vines of Johnson City; three daughters, Jeannie Street and husband Tony of Roan Mountain, Kimberly Tucker and husband Jonathan of Johnson City, and Alena Bentley and husband James of Hampton; three brothers, Danny Vines of Jonesborough, Bob Vines and Gilbert Vines, both of Elizabethton; one sister, Vicki Snyder of Johnson City; his girlfriend, Joan Ramsey of Elizabethton; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Billy James Vines, two-month old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Vines of Route 1, died in a local clinic Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. after a one-day illness.
Survivors besides the parents are the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Campbell of Route 1, and the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Janie Vines of Route 4.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending the arrival of the father from Chicago, Illinois.

He was the son of the late Carlie William and Rosia Lee Vines Hartley. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel "Lottie" Hartley, a brother, L.D. Hartley, and an uncle, Dana Hartley.

Mr. Hartley was a member of Meadowview Baptist Church.

He was an employee of the Carter County Sheriff's Department and also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict.

Funeral services was conducted at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Mar 21, 1999 at Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel.

Graveside services and interment will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 22, 1999 at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

He was a retired employee of Snap-On-Tools and he was of the Baptist faith. “Gomer” loved playing music with his friends and enjoyed listening to blue grass music. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, L. D. Hartley and Jessie Hartley and a sister, Maxine Whaley. Survivors include his wife, Brenda Hartley, of the home; three daughters, Norma Garrison and husband Mark, Elizabethton; Lorie Canter and husband David, Johnson City and Glinia Creasey and husband Doug, Elizabethton; grandchildren, Matthew Canter, Jacob Garrison, Kaylee Garrison, Kristen Creasey and Joshua Creasey; brothers, R. L. Hartley, Dennis Hartley, Gene Hartley and Carroll Hartley; sisters, Cindy Phillips, Hazel Clawson and Lucille Gardner and a special sister-in-law, Wanda Buckles. Several nieces and nephews and his loyal companion “Molly” also survive.

A Celebration of Life Service to honor the life of Mr. Dewey Lee “Gomer” Hartley will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 28, 2015 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Howard Estep, Rev. Ronnie Campbell and Rev. Buddy Street officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday prior to the service or at the residence at other times.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, October 29, 2015 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be June Andrews, Gary Cable, Dale Guinn, Bobby Guinn, Shane Guinn and Ken Carter.

Hugh Gene Hartley, 69, Poga, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at the James H. Quillen Va Medical Center.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Carl and Rosalee Vines Hartley.
Gene served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. He was a retired construction worker. He was a member and Deacon of Elk Mills Christian Church. He loved to watch Westerns.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Lisha Clawson Hartley; his children, Timothy (Tina) Hartley and Kimberly Hartley and son-in-law Derek Garton; five grandchildren, Brittany, Phillip, Timmy, Faith and Abigail, and the love of his life, his great-grandson, Nehemiah; his brothers, Dennis, R.L. and Carroll Hartley; two sisters, Hazel and Lucille; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 28, at the Elk Mills Christian Church with Mr. Glen Foster, minister, and Mr. Donnie Cable, minister, officiating. Music will be provided by the church family. Interment will follow in the Cable Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jody Hartley, Cody Hartley, Blake Dugger, Timmy Hartley, Phillip Marvel and Bobby Hartley. Stella B. Isaacs, 75, of Hickory, NC, formerly of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord, on Friday, December 23, 2016, in the Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton, NC. She was the daughter of the late Zeno and Georgia Mae Vines Black and was born in Carter County, TN. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie ?G.W.? Isaacs, a daughter, two sons and a brother.

Mrs. Isaacs loved to crochet and she made quilts, as well as breeding and raising poodles. She was a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church in Hickory, NC and was retired from Regal Manufacturing in Hickory, where she worked for twenty-seven years.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Roger Isaacs and Josh Isaacs, both of Newton, NC; several grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn Bunton, Elizabethton; and three brothers, Zeno Black, Jr. and his wife, Teresa; Jim Black, and Danny Black, all of Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Stella B. Isaacs will be conducted at 7:00 PM, on Monday, December 26, 2016, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Richard Jones officiating. Music will be under the direction of The Sounds of Victory and Teresa Black. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 ? 7:00 PM on Monday prior to the service.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM, on Tuesday, December 27, 2016, in the Whitehead Cemetery in Butler, TN. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Born July 6, 1943, in Roan Mt., Tenn., he was the son of the late Zeno and Georgia Mae Vines Black. ELIZABETHTON - Carolyn Bunton, age 75 of Elizabethton, TN, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on May 5, 2023, at the Franklin Woods Hospital in Johnson City. She was born Sept 4, 1947 to Zeno and Georgia Mae (Vines) Black on Lower Elk. She graduated from Cloudland High School in 1967.

She accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior in 1983. She was a faithful member of Meadowview Baptist Church.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her mother, and father, her brothers Jerry and Jim and sister Stella.

ELIZABETHTON - George Thomas Skeans, 77, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, February 17, 2023 in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Gordon & Ellen Stout Skeans. He was a retired Captain with the Carter County Sheriff’s Department. In earlier years, he was employed as a mechanical Engineer. He loved gardening, hunting and fishing. George was a member of Union Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Marley Skeans, two brothers: Cyril and Bill Skeans and one sister; Mary J. Morgan. George was a member of Hampton Masonic Lodge # 750 and was a 32nd degree Mason.

Howard Dana Guy, 82, of Canton, Ga., passed away on September 23, 2021, at his residence.
Howard was born in Avery County, N.C., to the late Dana Guy and Ruth Stout Guy. In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his brother, William “Bill” Hicks, and sisters, Alma Church, Shirley Potter and Mabel Maxine Guy.
Howard Guy was a devoted husband who treasured his beautiful wife of 63 years, Crystal Rose Guy. He was a loving Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, and Friend to many. He was an expert fisherman who loved being outdoors. He was a singer with a beautiful voice and a wonderful friend who never met a stranger. He retired as a Supervisor with Ford Motor Company.
