Nancy Belle Dowell, age 87, of 504 S. Church Street, Mountain City, passed away Saturday morning in the Johnson County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Dowell was a native of Johnson County, a daughter of the late Charlie R. and Lydia Greer Potter. Mrs. Dowell was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie O. Dowell in 1963, and was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include five daughters, Hazel Dowell and Verta Greer, both of Mountain City; Opal Wood, Wilmington, Delaware; Virginia Ailes, Oxford, Pennsylvania; Eula Dowell, Avondale, Pennsylvania; three sons, Ralph Dowell, New Castle, Delaware; John Dowell, Mountain City; Harold Dowell, West Grove, Pennsylvania; one brother, Charlie Potter, Mountain City; two sisters, Mae Howard, Mountain City; Mrs. Danford Stout, Elizabethton; 31 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday from the Gentry-Percy-Hux Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dwight Adams officiating. Interment followed in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers were friends and neighbors.

Otis Sluder, age 97, of 540 Sluder Road, Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2005 at the Life Care Center of Elizabethton. A native of Ashe County, NC, he lived most of his life in Shady Valley. Otis was a son of the late Amos L. and Abigail Greer Sluder and was a farmer and carpenter. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Victory Baptist Church. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle Sluder and several sisters and brothers. Suviving are his wife of 69 years, Letha Sluder, five sons: Herbert Sluder and wife Betty of Winchester, VA, Alton Sluder and wife Shirley, Cline Sluder and wife Cathy, Curtis Sluder and Wife, Linda and Kenneth Sluder and wife Eula, all of Shady Valley; a sister, Edna Blevins of Shady Valley; ten grandchildren, Gavin Craig Sluder, Patricia Gayle Santiago, Patty Shoun, Tim Sluder, Jackie Sluder, David Sluder, Charlotte Berry, Leslie Hill, Kenny Sluder and Lisa Sluder. Ten great-grandchildren ande several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p. m. Wednsday, May 11, 2005 from Victory Baptist Church. Brother Eddie Porter will officiate. Music will be under the direction of Don McAllister. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 12, 2005 from the Gentry Cemetery in Shady Valley. Edna Mae "Granny" Sluder Blevins, 98, passed peacefully from this earthly life into eternal life in heaven on Sunday, May 27, 2007. She was affectionately known as "Granny" by all who knew and loved her. She came to Shady Valley, Tenn. in a covered wagon from Ashe County, N.C. when she was five years old. She was married under a large oak tree near Mountain City, Tenn. to Wheeler Howard Blevins. They were married 67 years until his death on December 17, 1994. Granny was saved and baptized in 1944. She joined the Shady Valley Baptist Church at that time and has been a faithful member for 63 years. She taught Sunday School for over 50 years, sang in the choir, helped with VBS, and belonged to the WMU. She traveled extensively in the US and Europe. She also visited the Holy Land where her Savior was born. She loved to talk about her travel experiences. Her saddest days were the days after she lost her husband and four grandsons. Her grandsons who preceded her in death were James Plummer, Tommy Blevins, Stephen Blevins and Jimmy Lafferty. She also lost an infant great-granddaughter, Kaleigh Tolliver. She was proud of her large family. They are Elmo Blevins, Emery and Clara Blevins, Lillard and Ethel Blevins, Pervis and Phyllis Blevins, Kenneth and Norma Blevins, Betty and Jim Plummer, Ethan and Connie Blevins, Reba and John Tillery, Judy and John Tucker, Naomi and Willie Hammons, and Joseph and Janice Blevins. She has 31 grandchildren, 39 greatgrandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She also has several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of the Amos Lillard Sluder and Abigail Greer Sluder family. She was loved by all who knew her and will be missed by her family and friends. A memorial service will be conducted at Shady Valley Baptist Church on May 30, 2007, at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in the Shady Valley Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Shady Valley Fire Department, Shady Valley Baptist Church or Shady Valley Memorial Gardens, all in Shady Valley, Tenn. 37688.

Gladys B. Roberts, age 86, 919 Medical Park Drive, Mountain City, TN passed away Tuesday morning, July 10, 2012 in Mountain City Care Center. She was a daughter of the late Dave Howard and Susie Potter Howard. Gladys was a member of Berea Baptist Church and she loved reading, cooking and especially loved spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lester Osborne.

Survivors include her husband, Archie Roberts; one daughter, Sallie Hall of Chicago, IL; six sons, Doug Osborne and wife Camilla, Delbert Osborne and wife Sheila, Charles Osborne and wife Denise, Darrell Osborne and wife Evelyn, Archie Roberts, Jr. (Mack) and wife Lisa, all of Mountain City, TN, Lynn Osborne and wife Kim of Kingsport, TN; one sister, Pauline Miller of Mountain City, TN; one brother, Edward Howard of Ashland, OH; twenty-four grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Gladys B. Roberts were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012 from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Steven Spencer, Rev. Randy Shoun and Rev. James Pardue officiating. The family received friends from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Graveside service and interment followed in Sunset Memorial Park. It is with great sadness that the family of Pauline D. Miller announces her passing on December 16, 2021 at the age of 94 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
Pauline was born in Johnson County, TN to the late David Howard and Susie Potter Howard. In addition to her parents she was proceeded in death by a brother Edward Howard and a sister Gladys Roberts. She was a former employee of Leco and Levi’s manufacturing companies. Pauline enjoyed crosswords, reading and growing her roses. She was of the Baptist faith.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Norman Miller and finance Rita Brown of Mountain City, TN; one grandson Norman David Miller of Butler, TN; one great-grandson; Norman David Miller, Jr. of Butler, TN; one great-granddaughter, Tabithia A Miller of Waltersboro, SC and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from 1:00 pm till 2:00 pm at the Hux & Lipford Chapel.. Entombment service will follow the visitation in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum.

John “J.W.” William Dowell, age 92, passed away on December 17, 2022 at Mountain City Care Center. Jay was born on January 14, 1930 to the late Charles Dowell and Nancy Potter Dowell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Virginia Ailes, Eula Dowell, Verta Greer, Hazel Sluder, Opal Wood, Goldie Wood, Harold Dowell, Ralph Dowell, Charles Dowell, and Hayden Dowell and his grandson, Justin Robert Dowell.

Jay retired from Lukens Steele Company and was a proud member of Local Union 1165 steel workers in Coatesville, PA after over 20 years of employment. Jay and his wife, Ethel were married in November of 1951 and built their new home in Mountain City when they were in their 70’s. He liked to crochet, collect coins and model trains, play guitar, and sang in church with his sisters and his daughter when he was younger. Jay was a member of the Pentecostal church in Vilas, NC and his faith was very important to him.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 71 years, Ethel Louise Dowell; daughter, Carolyn Steele of Lenoir, NC; sons, John Russell Dowell and wife Patti of Elkton, MD, Robert Dean Dowell and wife Rhonda of Elkton, MD, Charles Ray Dowell and wife Margaret of Mountain City; grandchildren, John Jr. (Lisa), Farrah, Tara, Tiffany, Jason (Erin), Amanda, Josh (Samantha); great grandchildren, Paige, Nolan, Gavin, Zander, Marissa, Gage, Jayde, Jackson, Daisy; great great grandchild, Bailee; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Terry Carver officiating. The graveside service and burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Harold retired in Wilmington, DE after 31years of service to NVF Power Co. He enjoyed sports and working puzzles. Harold was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

SHADY VALLEY - Lorella Greer Tolliver, age 100, of Shady Valley, Tennessee went home to her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 19, 2022. She was born in Shady Valley on January 28, 1922 to the late Roby and Virdia Greer. In addition to her parents Lorella was proceeded in death by her husband of 72 years, Raymond Tolliver; four sisters: Sue, Tishia, Mandelene, and infant sister Nancy; daughter and son-n-law Sharon and Joe Copley; and granddaughter Kaleigh Tolliver.

Lorella and her four sisters were affectionately known as the “Greer girls.” They delighted in playing tricks, pranks, and creating mischief wherever they went. This practice never lessoned with age and if you messed with one of them, you got them all. Together they were a force to be reckoned with!

Lorella was a kind, gentle person who never met a stranger. She was a member of Shady Valley Baptist Church where she served as treasurer for 25 years. She was a homemaker and avid seamstress who loved to quilt. She continued this passion until the time of her death. Her greatest joy in this life was her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

SHADY VALLEY - Mandlene Greer Morley, age 93, of Shady Valley, TN passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at Johnson City Medical Center.

Mandlene was the daughter of the late Roby James Greer and Verda Rachel Martin Greer of Shady Valley, TN. Mandlene was preceded in death by Delmer David Morley, her husband of 75 years. She was also preceded in death by her sisters: Tishia Miller, Sue Miller and infant sister Nancy Greer; two sons-in-law: Jim Walker and Wayne Moser.

Mandlene was an active member of Shady Valley Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. She was an excellent seamstress and cook who enjoyed her beautiful flowers and working in her vegetable and flower gardens.

She was born December 29, 1930 to the late James Williams and Callie Williams. She is also preceded in death by her spouse, Chester Osborne. brother; Joe Williams and 4 sisters; Doll Goode, Emma Wagner, Pauline Greer, and Hallie Dunn Ada enjoyed planting flowers, gardening, reading, and quilting. She would often volunteer in the food pantry of First Baptist Church.

SHADY VALLEY - Settie Main Garland, 91, of Shady Valley, TN passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2017 in the Hermitage Health Care, Elizabethton, TN.

She was a lifelong resident of Shady Valley, TN and was a daughter of the late Matt and Hazel Main. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Garland; a special companion, Tom Jenkins; six brothers, Charlie, Hubert, Walter, Jake, Bob, and Maynard Main; two sisters, Blanche Mahala and Elnore Garland; and two nieces.

Settie enjoyed cooking and taking care of her family. She was a member of Crandull Church of Christ in Shady Valley, TN.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Fenner and her husband, Richard, of Elizabethton, TN; a granddaughter, Jennifer Godsey and her fiance, Michael Reesman, of Butler, TN; a brother, Jack Main and his wife, Mary, of Shady Valley, TN; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Judy Watson, Pat Main, Eula Sluder and all the beauty shop gang.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 2:45 pm Sunday, August 27, 2017 at Crandull Church of Christ in Shady Valley, TN. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 3:00 pm Sunday at the church with Mr. John Maltais, minister officiating. The committal service and interment will follow at Billy Hill Cemetery. Peggy Main, age 81, passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born on September 9, 1940 to the late Delbert and Mary Ann Lewis. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Main, and brothers, Deck Lewis, Raymond Lewis, and Lark Lewis.

Peggy loved the Lord and enjoyed reading her bible. She worked at the glove plant, Merita Bread Store and Harris Teeter for many years. Peggy also enjoyed crocheting.

Those left to cherish her memories include her son, Dale Long; daughter, Debora McNew; sisters, Carnie Duffield and Mary Ann Price; grandchildren, Amanda, Mary, Daniel, and Thomas; three great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Jack Randal Main, age 78, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, October 4, 2017. He was born on November 8, 1938 to the late Matt Main and Hazel Main. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his brothers: Charley, Hubert, Jake, Walter, Bob, Maynard Main; sisters: Blanch Mahala, Elenore Garland and Settie Garland; nieces: Betty and Melissa.

Jack loved to joke with people and pull harmless pranks. He enjoyed being outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting for ginseng and playing horseshoes. Jack loved spending time with his family and friends especially his grandson, Dalton who he went fishing a lot with.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 49 years, Mary Main; children: Angela Main Brown and husband George and Chad Main; grandson, Dalton Evan Brown; his precious cats, Daisy and Tum; special friends: Odas Watson, Wayne Shephard and Gary Dunn and several nieces and nephews.

Mary was a very loving and caring person who was devoted to her family. She retired from Levi Strauss and was a member of Harmon Christian Church. Her sense of humor was a joy to her family and friends.

SHADY VALLEY - Odas Watson, age 78, of Shady Valley, Tennessee passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at his residence.

He was born April 15, 1941 to the late Elbert John (E.J.) and Bonnie Main Watson. Odas was a United States Navy Veteran. He was a member of the Crandull Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Nell Pope and Katherine Blevins; five brothers: Herman Watson, C.J. Phillips, Marshal Phillips, Ed Phillips and John Watson. Odas was formerly employed with Sperry Corporation, Raytheon Corporation and Dana Corporation.

Survivors include: his wife, Annette Reece Watson, of the home; sons: Mike and Kent (Judy); daughters: Bonnie (Arthur), Kelly (Michael); granddaughters: Jaylen, Danielle, Sasha, Chloe, and Kaylee; a grandson, Brandon and a sister, Annie.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 3 pm at the Crandull Church of Christ, Shady Valley, Tennessee, with Tracy Dugger officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 pm until 3 pm, prior to the service. Graveside service accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard and interment will follow in the Blevins Cemetery.

Alton L. Sluder, age 78, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at his home in Shady Valley, Tennessee. He was born December 19, 1938 to the late Otis and Letha Sluder. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Tim and his brothers: Cline, Curtis and Herbert Sluder.

Alton was a lifelong resident of Shady Valley except for a few years that he lived in Maryland where during that time he drove the bus for Continental Trailways and also transported the Washington Redskins to and from games. Alton owned and operated Sluder Brothers Logging with his brothers for many years. He and his wife Shirley retired from S&S General Store.

Alton was a good husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

He was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 56 years, Shirley Jones Sluder; daughter, Pattie Taylor and husband Rick and their sons: Austin Shoun, Matthew Shoun, Chad Taylor, Triston, Taylor and Garrett Taylor; daughter, Jackie Sluder Grindstaff and husband Blake and their daughter, Josie Cheyenne Grindstaff; grandson, Jake Sluder (Tim's Son); brother, Kenneth Sluder and wife Eula; several nieces, nephews and extended family members as well as many close family friends.

Emery 'Tiny' Howard Blevins, age 87, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital of Abingdon, Virginia. He was born on September 3, 1929 to the late Wheeler and Edna Sluder Blevins. In addition to his parents, Tiny was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Camron Melba Brooks.

Tiny was a lifelong resident of Shady Valley. He retired from Carr Brothers at the age of 65. He also worked for the Sluder Brothers and many others for years following his retirement. He loved his family and friends very much and they loved him. Tiny was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He loved going 'to the store' and visiting with his friends.

Tiny was a United States Army Veteran and was stationed in Greenland and TX.

He was a member of the Shady Valley Baptist Church.

Bill J. Greer age 84, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went to be with his Lord on Monday, September 16, 2019 at the Mountain City Care Center. He was born on April 23, 1935 to the late Ben & Lorne Greer. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Margie Lewis Greer on January 28, 2018, and sister; Mary Sue Peck on August 17, 2019.

Bill was a deacon at First Freewill Baptist Church for over 20 years. Bill was also known for ringing the bell at First Freewill Baptist. He Loved collecting Carter family records, playing the guitar and Harmonica. He also loved gardening and really enjoyed being outside. Bill is loved and will be remembered by many.

MOUNTAIN CITY - Mary Sue Peck, age 75, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away at her daughter's residence on Saturday, August 17, 2019.

Mary was born in Johnson County, TN on February 2, 15, 1944, to the late Ben L. Greer and Lorne Price Greer. In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her Grandparents, Roby and Viola Price and John and Omie Greer; Sisters, Geraldine Greer and Christine Pleasant; Brothers, Carl Greer, Ralph Greer, and Harold Greer; grandson, Jason Davis; several aunts and uncles.

Mary worked as a caregiver, taking care of many in the area. Mary was well suited for this, as she enjoyed taking care of other people. When Mary wasn't working, she enjoyed baking and spending time with her friends and family.

Those left to cherish Mary's memory are her daughter, Lora Cable and husband Justin of Butler, TN; 3 sons Terry Davis and wife Pammy of Mountain City, TN, Billy Davis of the home, and Freddy Potter of Wilkes, NC; 3 brothers Bill, Wayne, and David Greer all of Mt. City, TN; 10 grandchildren Ryan Snyder, Benji Stout, Joshua, Joey, and Tiffany Davis, Tosha, Jordan, and Morgan Potter, Kay Harper, and Cecil Wentworth; 18 great-grandchildren Matthey, Destani, Rihanna, November, Nitrous, and Ryan Snyder, Jr, Navaeh and Paris Davis, Kenneth Lipford, Kyndle Davis, Lucas, Serena, and Jasmine Wentworth, Quinton, Riley, McKenzie, Lexi, and Harlynn Potter; several nieces and nephews, as well as, special friends Dot Canter, Buster Fritts, and Shirley Phipps.

Services for Mary will be held at 8pm on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, in the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel at Hux & Lipford Funeral Home in Mountain City, TN with Roy Wilson to officiate. The family will receive friends from 6pm – 8pm prior to the service.

Graveside service will be at 11 am on Thursday, August 22, 2019, at the Rocksprings Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be TJ Brown, Adam Worley, Chris Brown, Eddie Tester, William Rigsby, and James Shriner. Honorary Pallbearers will be Richard Hagler and Buster Fritts.

We are saddened to announce the passing of Wayne Greer on Saturday October 2, 2021 at the Johnson City Medical Center at the age of 66. Wayne was born April 29, 1955 to the late Ben Greer and Lorne Price Greer in Mountain City, TN. Wayne was also proceeded in death by brothers; Ralph, Carl, Bill, Harold, and David Greer, also sisters; Geraldine Greer, Mary Sue Peck, and Christine Pleasant. He was an associate of Hux & Lipford Funeral Home and Sunset Memorial Park. He was a man with a big heart and was always willing to lend a hand always saying “if you need anything let me know” and had the ability to make you laugh. He loved going to yard sales and fishing.

Survivors include; Son; Connor Greer of the home. Daughter; Amber Wilson

Several Nieces and nephews also survive. Special friends; Dan Lipford and Bugs McCoy.

Russell Virgil Greer, age 77, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, December 06, 2018, at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born on November 12, 1941 to the late Taff and Essie Price Greer. In addition to his parents, Virgil was preceded in death by brothers, Max, Jimmy, Bobby Ray.

Virgil retired from the Town of Mountain City Water Department. He loved his job there and made many friends throughout the years. Virgil was also a farmer, which he loved. He was always friendly and smiling and will be greatly missed.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 50 years, Marsone Campbell Greer; sister, Pearl Greer Stout; brothers, Earl Greer and Junior Greer and several special great nieces and great nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12-2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Darren Thompson officiating. Weather permitting, graveside service and interment will follow at the Greer Cemetery. Pallbearers are Chris Reece, David Billings, Matt Hicks, Jimmy Johnson, Junior Greer, Ray Jones, Ray Potter and Danny Ray Wilson. Honorary pallbearers are Rick Stout, Tom Campbell, Junior Campbell, Ray Osborne, Keith Wilson, Rick Roberts, Raymond Buchanan, Chucky Scott and Jeff Price.
