    Notes:

    Doris Emerson passed away peacefully on June 1, 2015, at The Devonshire. She was born in Abingdon, Virginia, on January 11, 1919. She graduated from Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Virginia and then continued her studies at the University of Virginia School of Nursing. Upon her graduation as an RN she moved to Connecticut to work as a psychiatric nurse at a hospital. It was there that she met her future husband, Joseph Emerson, who was also working there. They were married September 4, 1942 and Doris followed Joe as he served in the Army Air Corps as a meteorologist. They lived in Edmonton, Canada, and later moved to Hampton, Virginia, in 1946 when Joe took a job at NACA, Langley AFB, and served in the Air Force Reserve.

    Doris was an active member of the Langley Officers' Wives Club for many years. She also was active in her church, Central UMC in Hampton. Doris and Joe enjoyed traveling the world and visited 86 countries in all their years together.

    Doris was preceded in death by Joe, who was her lifetime tour guide. She is survived by her only child, her son, Malcolm, his wife Anne, and their three children, Amy and her husband Bill, Clay and his wife Jill, and Wendy and her husband Adam. She is also survived by her three dear great-granddaughters, Claire, Ella, and Brooke, who brought her much joy and many smiles.

    Her family would like to thank the staff at The Devonshire for nearly a decade with them. Many thanks to the hospice caregivers who made her last two years pleasant and comfortable. We would like to especially thank Earnestine, Gloria, and all the other caregivers who loved her and cared so beautifully for her for almost a decade.
