Berta Sue Vance, 96, of the Linville Falls community, died Saturday, May 18, 2002. A native of Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Delzie Mace Ollis. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Elbert Stamey Sr. and Harve Vance; two sons, Frank and Elbert Stamey Jr. and one daughter, Lillian Vance.

Survivors include one sister, Carrie Gouge of Celo; daughter-in-law, Maxine Stamey of Linville Falls; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and seven great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Pisgah Methodist Church. Revs. Keith Tutterow and Phillip McCall officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine.

Deter T. Ollis of Route 2, Newland, died in Nha Trang, Vietnam, 1 June. He was the General Foreman for Raymond Morrison Knudesen and J.A. Jones construction company. He was on his second tour of working in Vietnam. He was the Son of Joseph Taylor Ollis and Delzie Mace Ollis.

Born in Avery County, North Carolina, he was an area resident for 20 years. He worked for a number of years as a tire recapper.

A native of Avery County she was a daughter of the late Jonathon and Lucy Huskins Ollis and was the Owner and Operator of Beam’s Restaurant. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband James Ramey Beam, a son; Bob Beam, a grandson, Kevin Beam, two sisters; Ada Minton and Ida Miller and four brothers; Council Ollis, Kelsey Ollis, Kelly Ollis, and Ted Ollis. Survivors include four daughters; Barbara Stradley of Statesville, NC, Berenda Eng and husband Richard of Spruce Pine, Bonita Bishop and husband Douglas of Hickory, NC and Beverly VanRoekel and husband Johnnie of Lexington, NC, a sister, Nellie Hall of Spruce Pine and a daughter in law Margaret Beam of Newland. Betty Vance Benton of Hickory, North Carolina passed away at the age of 88 on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.

She was survived by her children: Evelyn Champion (Rusty) of Hickory, NC, Susan Benton Wilson (Gene) of Charlotte, NC, Elaine Tucker of Hickory, NC and Clarence Benton II of Conover, NC; her brothers, John Vance of Murrells Inlet, SC, and Kenneth Vance of Lenoir, NC; and sisters, Carolyn Vance of Hickory, NC and Barbara Vance of Morganton, NC. She has four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother, Mae Vance; her father, Dempse Vance; sisters, Katherine Stewart and Elizabeth Libera; brothers, Willis Vance and Sammy Vance; and infant, Claude Dempsey Benton.

Betty was born on July 12, 1933 in Altamont, NC. She graduated from Crossnore High School in the class of 1951. She obtained her nursing degree from Grace Hospital in Morganton, NC in 1954 and became a Registered Nurse. She worked at Hickory Memorial Hospital until Catawba Valley Medical Center opened and worked at Catawba Valley Medical Center for 28 years until her retirement. She was a member of Business and Professional Women for many years.

She was a strong, independent woman. She was devoted to her large extended family and enjoyed taking care of everyone around her. She touched more lives through her many years of nursing than any us will ever truly know.

The family would like to thank Visiting Angels and Grace Village Assisted Living and Memory Care for their support.

The family received friends Saturday, June 25 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Hickory Funeral Home. The funeral service followed at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Hickory Funeral Home with the Rev. Ernie Richards officiating. Burial followed at Burke Memorial Park in Morganton, NC.

Pauline Benfield Greer, 97, passed away in the early morning hours on Friday, July 3, 2015, at her home in Elizabethton, Tenn. She was born on April 4, 1918 in Ingalls, N.C. Her parents were Elda Ollis Benfield and Floyd Preston Benfield. She was one of 10 children and is survived by one brother, Berlin Benfield. Mrs. Greer completed the 8th grade and went on to take some Business College courses at the school in Elizabethton. She worked at several jobs in her lifetime, but worked for 42 years at the North American Rayon plant, holding various jobs in multiple departments. She retired in 1984 and concentrated on her grandchildren, gardens and quilting. She loved flowers and quilting; in her lifetime, she completed over 500 quilts. Survivors include four children, Ashley, Sharon, Laura and Scott Jr. Eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive. A Celebration of Life Service for Pauline Benfield Greer was conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 5, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. The graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 6, in the Green Valley Baptist Church Cemetery, Spruce Pine, N.C. Active pallbearers were Jonathan, Scotty, Jeremy, Buzz, Robert and Colin. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff at Amedisys Hospice for the excellent care and assistance given to Mrs. Greer in these last few years.

MARIETTA, Ga. — Belvin "Ben" Benfield passed away on July 5, 2018 after a short illness. He grew up in the hills of East Tennessee and was the ninth of ten children. He was a cum laude graduate of East Tennessee State University and received his Master of Science in Radio-Television from Syracuse University. After successful careers in Broadcasting and the Construction Industry, he became a Certified Meeting and Hospitality professional (CMP) and he and his wife owned The Benfield Group, a corporate and independent meeting consulting firm.
Ben's broadcasting awards include the Associated Press Award for News Reporting – "Fulton Federal Fire," and for Human Interest Television Feature – "Old Man and His Mountain," WSB Television; East Tennessee State University Honor Award, producer and host for "Art and Music" Television Series, WJHL Television; writer-producer on award winning ABC-TV series, "File Seven," owned and presented by Johns Hopkins University. He was instructor-Management Practices, Radio-Television Department, Ithaca College where he developed and implemented a student staffed one hour nightly television newscast, which won both Associated Press and United Press awards.
He was White House Liaison to Johns Hopkins University for coordination of news coverage, security procedures and facilities utilization during the bilateral proclamation of a major foreign policy position by President Eisenhower and British Prime Minister MacMillan – Baltimore 1958.
Ben served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was liaison officer from the United States Armed Forces Radio Services to the Japanese Government's National Broadcasting Service (NHK) for the movement of AFRS facilities to US Military Bases – Japan 1953.
He was National Chief for the Y-Indian Guide Programs during the early seventies; co-authored "Y-TRAILBLAZERS" program manual for National YMCA parent-child club program; co-planned, organized and led 1,000 person Train Excursion and Encampment to Fort Benning, Ga.
His community involvement included membership in: Meeting Professionals International, Atlanta Kiwanis Club, Atlanta Executives Association (past president), United Way Speakers Bureau, Chi Psi Fraternity, Northside United Methodist Church, Northside YMCA Board, Jaycees and Toastmasters Club.
He was predeceased by his father, Floyd Preston Benfield, and mother, Elda Laura Ollis Benfield, and by four brothers and five sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jan, of 30 years; two sons, Berlin (Vera) Benfield and George (Ann) Benfield; four grandchildren, Rebecca and Allison Benfield of Grapevine, Texas, Emery and Baker Benfield of Knoxville, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Paul W. Burleson, 92, of Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at his residence.
A native of Spruce Pine, N.C., he was a son of the late Robert Burleson and Ida Ollis Burleson Minton. He had lived most of his life in Carter County.
Paul was retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 48 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Carter County Rescue Squad. He was also a member of the Gallon Pin Program of the American Red Cross. Paul attended Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jim, Guy and Johnny Burleson; a sister, Cora Burleson; and two grandsons, Dennis and Mark Matherly.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Mary Townsend Burleson; his children, Madeline Matherly and husband Carroll, Johnson City, Paulette Ashby and husband Bernard, Princeton, W.Va., Ginger Burleson, Trish Hughes and Tammy Moore and husband Mike, all of Elizabethton; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Eva Phipps, Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Carl Hatley.
Funeral services for Paul W. Burleson will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 21, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Mark Fowler and Pastor Justin Deaton officiating. Music will be provided by Tammy and Greg Ruston. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and friends. Julia “Bug” Burleson, 70, of Three Mile, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 5, 2021 at Memorial Mission Hospital.

A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Boyd and Rosalee “Bobby” Carpenter Ollis. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ted Burleson; brothers: Jess Lee and Joseph Ollis and son-in-law, Johnny Sheppard. Julia loved traveling, enjoyed going to Dollywood, reading, word search puzzles, yard sales and making new friends. She adored her family.

Surviving is her daughter, Joann Renfro and husband, Rick, of Green Mountain; son, John Burleson and wife, Mary, of Linville Falls; grandchildren: Haley Dutton, Jackie Sheppard and Ashley Sheppard (Josh); great-grandchildren: Mason, Alaina, Mackenzie and Asher; sister, Janice Ingram; brother, Jack Ollis and wife, Glenna, and her dog, Mia. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 11, 2021 in Henson Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Junior Carver officiated. Burial followed in the Pittman Cemetery.
