22. | Edward Hazelwood ![]() Notes: The Rev. E.E. Hazelwood, 61, well known Baptist minister, died at his home at Hampton last night following an illness of several weeks. The deceased was one of the most highly respected and beloved ministers in this entire section and has the distinction of preaching in almost every church of the Watauga Baptist association which comprises Johnson and Carter counties. At the time of his death, He was pastor of the Union Baptist church of Cardens Bluff, having accepted the pastorate on May 11, 1913. Ordained a minister in 1906 at Hampton by the Rev. W.J. Potter, assisted by the Rev. John Rainbolt and the Rev. Sam C. Deloach, he has served as pastor at Milligan, Limestone Cove, Little Mountain, Hunter, Winner, Carter, Stoney Creek, Harmony Baptist Church, Poplar Grove, Caldwell Baptist Church, Siam, Gap Creek, Fish Springs, Dungan's Chapel and at Hampton. In his ministerial work, he has held numerous revivals and baptized more than 2,000 converts. Following out the command of the Master, he has loved his fellowmen as himself and led a life of service, going throughout the mountainous section, helping those not only in spiritual need, but physically as well. Dark, stormy weather meant nothing to him as many times at night he has traveled miles through rain and cold to help those in need. He served as preacher and teacher to many. The Rev. Hazelwood was born on September 7, 1873. On Feb. 11, 1894, he was married to Miss Celia M. Goodwin, four children being born to this union, two daughters and two sons. His Christian life began very early, having professed faith in Christ in 1888 uniting with the Hampton Baptist church one year later. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. E.E. Hazelwood; one daughter, Mrs. John Miller; four grandchildren, Dovie Pearl Miller, Edgar Miller, Mary Christine Hazelwood, Charles Hazelwood; one brother, George Hazelwood, all of Hampton. Funeral services will be conducted from the Union Baptist church at Carden's Bluff Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Bowden, the Rev. Clay Wilson and Judge W.R. Allen officiating. Interment will be made in the Morton cemetery. Active pall bearers will be Henry Guinn, Donce Street, James B. Deal, Percy Campbell, Bob Campbell, Bruce Pierce, Roy Wilson and Will Sams. Honorary pall bearers will include Sam Carden, M.C. Montgomery, Charlie Blevins, W.A. Sorrell, D.O. Johnson, Oscar Johnson, Nat Carden, Loss Morton, Charlie Peters, D.D. 30. | Bertha Olivene Peters ![]() Notes: Mrs. Bertha O. Nichols, 93, 101 Mitchell St., Providence, R.I., died Monday morning in the Elmwood Health Center after a lengthy illness. A native of Carter County, she had lived in Rhode Island for the past 20 years and was a daughter of the late Frank and Joanne Archer Peters. Mrs. Nichols was a Protestant and was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Nichols, Sr., in 1981. Survivors include two sons, Ray Nichols, Rt. 5, Johnson City, and Carl Nichols, Charleston, S.C.; one brother, Mike Peters of Hampton; and two sisters, Mrs. Nell Pierce of Hampton and Mrs. Laura Bowers of Elizabethton. Two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. The body is being returned to Elizabethton for funeral and interment. Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha O. Nichols, 93, 101 Mitchell St., Provicence, R.I., who died Monday, will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday from the Sunset Chapel of Hatahway-Percy Funeral Home with Fred C. Lester, minister, officiating. Music will be by Mrs. Georgia Cox, organist. Interment will be in the Morton Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Friends may call at the residence of a son, Ray Nichols, Rt. 5, Johnson City, at any time. |
31. | Celia Isabella Peters ![]() Notes: Mrs. E.H. Bowers, 64, died at 1:20 pm Monday at a Kingsport hospital after several months illness. Her home was at Jonesboro, Route 5 on the Johson City-Kingsport Highway. She was born in Hampton, and had lived in Kingsport and Washington County for 33 years. She was a member of Grandview Chapter 441 of Eastern Star and was a Gold Star Mother. He son Lt. Wayne H. Bowers died in World War II. Survivors are her husband, E.H. Bowers, Route 5, Jonesboro; two daughters, Mrs. Logan G. Flanary, Kingsport; Mrs. Philip B. Hardymon, Columbus, Ohio; one son, Capt. James B. Bowers, with the U.S. Air Force in Japan; four sisters: Mrs. Laura Bowers, Elizabethton; Mrs. Nan Smith, Hampton; Mrs. Bertha Nichols, Johnson City; one brother, Mike Peters of Indiana. The body will remain in the Hamlett-Dodson Furneral Home in Kingsport where funeral arrangements will be announced later. Funeral services for Mrs. E.H. Bowers will be conducted at 3 pm Wednesday from the First Christian Church, Kingsport, with Dr. L. Palmer Young officiating assisted by Dr. Clyde Smith of the Central Christian Church of Bristol. Burial will be made in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Celia married Emmert Houston Bowers about 1905 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Tetrick Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements. Funeral services for Mrs. Vina Jane Wilson will be held at 2 pm Saturday from the Union Baptist Church at Hampton. Officiating will be the Rev. G.H. Glass and Rev. W.W. Ward. Music by the Hardin Brothers Quartet. The body was returned to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Clarence Berry, of Route 7, Elizabethton, at 4 pm Thursday, and will be lie in state until the service hour.
