ELIZABETHTON - Ola Hicks, age 92, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 14, 2021 from Princeton Transitional Care in Johnson City. Ola was born in Carter County to the late Dave and Minnie Hamby Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Carl Hicks; six sisters; and three brothers.

Ola had worked at North American Rayon Corporation and later at Dino’s Restaurant. She was a member of Doe River Baptist Church for over 65 years. Ola loved to cook and always had a dessert or other items cooked at all times in case a guest were to drop by. Anyone that stopped by seldom left without eating. She also enjoyed reading her Bible and the newspaper.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Kathy Hicks, of the home; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews as well as a special nephew, Kenny Jones and his family also survive.

A graveside service to celebrate Ola’s life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Kent Hyder, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Joey Cole. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Claude Hamby, age 75, 249 Campbell Hollow Road, Roan Mountain, died at his residence, Wednesday, July 12, 2006, following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Barney and Martha Ashley Hamby. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Claude Hamby was a loving husband, dad, papaw and father-in-law. He was a friend to all that knew him. He will be greatly missed by everyone. He loved gardening and watching wrestling.
Mr. Hamby was of the Baptist faith and a retired employee of the Carter County Highway Department, after twenty-three years.
Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-three years, Lucille Campbell Hamby, of the home;
a loving daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Rev. Jude Hughes, Roan Mountain; loving sons and daughters-in-law: Michael and Brenda Hamby, Frank and Kathy Hamby, Carroll and Peggy Hamby, Richard Hamby and Fiancée Sharon Vargo, Jay and Carol Hamby, Joe and Mary Ann Hamby, all of Roan Mountain, Mark Hamby and girlfriend Renee Buchanan, Newland, NC,
Wayne and Melissa Hamby, Johnson City, Keith and Ann Hamby, Charlie and Beverly Hamby, both of Elizabethton; two sisters and one brother-in-law: Lorene and Bill Conner and Pauline Moore all of Roan Mountain; two brothers and one sister-in-law: Jay and Sarah Hamby, Roan Mountain and Burnette Hamby, Elizabethton. He had twenty-one grandchildren that meant the world to him and six great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 PM, Friday, July 14, 2006, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain, with Rev. Jude Hughes and Rev. Jim Storie officiating.
Music will be provided by Rev. Jude Hughes. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Friday prior to the service.
The graveside service and interment will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 15th in Isaacs Cemetery, Buck Mountain community, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be Michael Hughes, Jonathan Hughes, B.J. Hughes, Benjie Hughes, James Cardwell and Joey Mavers.
Honorary pallbearers will be the grandchildren. A special thank you to Adventa Hospice of Elizabethton, staff and nurses for all your help through this hard time. Also a thank you to Home Health Care of Elizabethton.

J. L. Hamby, age 68, 539 Teaberry Rd. # 3, Roan Mountain, went home to be with the Lord Friday, December 5, 2008 from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Barney and Martha Ashley Hamby. Mr. Hamby was a welder and enjoyed working on cars. He was of the Christian faith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hamby was preceded in death by his siblings Lester Hamby, Claude Hamby, Bruce Hamby, Pauline Moore, Lula Belle Ashley and Mary Lou Reynolds. Survivors include his wife of forty-seven years Sarah Hamby of the home, children: Regina Hutcheson, Elizabethton, Jay Hamby and wife Teralyn, Dyer, IN, Bill Hamby, Ravenden, AR, Rick Hamby, Hammond, IN, one half-daughter: Lisa Crook and husband Kevin, Madisonville, KY, eight grandchildren, a sister, Lorene Connors and husband Bill, Roan Mountain and a brother, Burnett Hamby and his companion Eve Booth, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The Celebration of Life service for Mr. Hamby will be at 10 a.m. Monday, December 8 at the Tetrick Funeral Home Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain, with Rev. Jude Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in the Isaac Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Tyler Hutcheson, Richard Hamby, Carroll Hamby, Jimmy Miller, Rex Gouge, Stevie Vargo and Michael Hamby.

Burnett Hamby, 75, of Elizabethton, passed away Monday, August 19, 2019, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Roan Mountain, he was a son of the late Barney and Martha Ashley Hamby.
Burnett had lived in Indiana and Arkansas before returning to Carter County. He was a construction worker.
Burnett attended Southside Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include his children, Burnett Hamby Jr. and wife Marie Hamby of Elizabethton and Deon Podgorski of Indiana; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 21, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steve Burleson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond, Ind.

ELIZABETHTON - Marie Hamby Bunton, 86, Elizabethton, passed away peacefully Monday, April 10, 2017 at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late William & Minnie Franklin Hamby. Marie was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. She was a homemaker. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Marie was a member of Grace Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years: James Lionel Bunton and four siblings.

Survivors include Three Children & their spouses: Linda Lou and Rob Thompson, Honea Path, South Carolina, Jimmy & Debbie Bunton and Lori & Vince Hawkins all of Elizabethton. Her Grandchildren: James M. Clouse, April Fox, Cody Bunton, Brandi Davis, Tanner Marshall, Colby & Kasey Hawkins. Her step-grandson: Forrest Thompson. Her brother: Bob Hamby & wife Charlotte, Elizabethton. Her sister: Maxine Howell, Bristol, Tenn. Several nieces & nephews. Her special care giver: Eva Rector.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2017 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Tim Tapp officiating. Burial will follow the service. Active Pallbearers will be: Cody Bunton, James Clouse, Colby Hawkins, Shannon Brickey, Jesse Ford and Forrest Thompson.

ELIZABETHTON - Robert E. "Bob" Hamby, age 89, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was the son of the late William H. and Minnie Hamby. Bob was a U.S. Veteran serving in the Airforce. He received his Bachelor's of Science degree from ETSU. He retired from Mountain Home VA Medical Center as a therapist after a 40-year career. After retirement, he went on to work at the Elizabethton Golf Course. Bob was an avid golfer, a big UT Vols fan and a recipient of the Happy Valley High School All Watauga Conference Award. He was a great family man, and a member of Central Community Christian Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lloyd Hamby; sisters, Marie Bunton, Nell Stewart, Betty Jo Williams and Mae Odom and his beloved dog, Winnie. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Charlotte Hamby, of the home; three children, Terri Hamby-Hager and husband Chris Hager, Karen Hamby Hughes and husband, William "Eddie" and Bobby Hamby and fiancé, Melinda Chaber; grandchildren, McKenzie Hughes Miller and husband Matthew, Jared and Carli Hamby; two great-granddaughters, Kyndall and Charlotte Miller; sister, Maxine Woods; several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Bob will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, July 6, 2023 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home Elizabethton with Mr. Todd Wolfe officiating. The family will receive friends between the hours of 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM prior to the service on Thursday.

The graveside service and committal will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 7, 2023 in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Bobby Hamby, Chris Hager, Matthew Miller, Jared Hamby and Jimmy Bunton. Honorary pallbearers are Eddie Hughes, Marvin Rogers and Jerry Elliott.

Carroll Hamby, 61, of Roan Mountain, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2018, at home with family by his side.
He was preceded in death by his father, Claude Hamby, and a son, Brian Wesley Hamby.
Carroll is survived by his mother, Lucile Hamby; his wife, Peggy Whitson Hamby; three sons, Charlie Whitson (Lisa), Greg Whitson (Joey) and Carroll "Doodle" (Christy"); and five grandchildren, Randall, Skylar, Devin, Cody and Brian. He is also survived by nine brothers and one sister, Michael (Cindy), Frank (Kathy), Richard, Mark, Wayne (Melissa), Jay (Linda), Tina Hughes (Jude), Keith (Ann), Charlie (Beverly) and Joe; and many nieces and nephews.
Carroll was a loving, caring husband, dad, brother, uncle and friend. He loved his family gatherings and holidays.
He had just recently retired from Property Management of Sugar Mountain. He loved working on cars, but most of all he loved his family. Hambone you will truly be missed!!
Services for Carroll Hamby will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 12, at Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton, Tenn. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., prior to the service. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 13, in the Hamby Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Austin, Brian, Alan and Martin Hamby, Doug Davis, David Stevens, Joshua Horney, Tony Malphurs and Chad Street. Honorary pallbearers will be his loving brothers.

HAMPTON - Gregory Banner, 61, Hampton, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2022 at his residence. A native of Carter County, he was born April 8, 1961. He was formerly employed by Tennessee Valley Cable. He loved to play the Guitar and play horseshoe. In earlier years he attended Union Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father Clyde Banner , a sister: Wanda Banner, a niece: Terra Blevins, his grandparents: Essie & Arthur Banner and Lawton & Della Hodge and his aunt: Helena Feathers.

Survivors include his daughter: Linda (Robert) Clawson, Mother: Geraldine Banner, a granddaughter: Rachel Nelson, a great grandson: Carter Eller, a sister: Jamie Blevins and a niece: Kelly Reed.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2022 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. David Montgomery officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
