Fannie A. Calhoun, 87, 119 Lover's Lane, Elizabethton, died Sunday, May 18, 1997 at Johnson City, Medical Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Calhoun was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Link and Dorthy Harrison Presnell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Oscar C. Calhoun, August 5, 1986, a son, Doris Calhoun, a sister, Lorenia Brewer, and a brother, George Presnell. Mrs. Calhoun was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include three daughters, Lucille Powell, of the home, Joyce Pierce, Elizabethton, and Lillian Watts, Laurinburg, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Sandy Calhoun, Bristol, and H.H. and Nancy Calhoun, Mishawaka, Ind.; a sister, Myrtle Jones, Roan Mountain; and a brother, Frank Presnell, Roan Mountain. Twenty-eight grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren also survive. Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements. Funeral services for Fannie A. Calhoun, 119 Lover's Lane, Elizabethton, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Rogers and Rev. Dale Greenwell officiating. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Mary Alice Hammitt, age 91, left her earthly family on July 29th to be with her heavenly family, at Lakebridge Healthcare, following a lengthy illness.
She was born September 25th, 1921, to John Wesley Ward and Mary Ann Presnell Ward. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Murphy Lee Hammitt, in 1975. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Dewey, Clifton, Gar and Howard; and by three sisters, Martha Barr, Eve Presnell and Bessie Presnell.
She was a member of Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ and was famous for her delicious soup beans and fantastic biscuits.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Edna and Mack Presnell, Johnson City; son, Billy Hammitt, Clarksville, Georgia; Brothers, Calvin, Johnson City, James, Erwin, and William Mocksville, N.C.; grandchildren, Dwight and Angela Presnell and Crystal Mitchell, Johnson City; Great grandchildren; Garrison, Sarah Presnell and Cody Mitchell, Johnson City; great great grandson, Preston Mitchell, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

William Riley "Casey" Ward, 91, of Mocksville, NC died on Sunday, June 7, 2015, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

A native of Watauga County, he was the son of the late John Wesley Ward and Mary Ann Presnell Ward and the widower of the late Finnie Presnell Ward who died January 25, 2005. They shared more than sixty years of marriage.

Mr. Ward was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army.

He was a retired county maintenance worker and a member of Heaven Bound Full Gospel Church.

Survivors include four sons, two daughters, two brothers, 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12th, at Heaven Bound Full Gospel Church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the time of service.

Interment will follow in the Ward Family Cemetery in Deep Gap, NC.

JOHNSON CITY - James Elbert Ward, 84, of Johnson City went to his Heavenly Home on Friday, February 12, 2016, in the Christian Care Center of Johnson City.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County and was a son of the late John and Mary Ann Presnell Ward. Mr. Ward was a member of the Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ. He had been a salesman most of his life. Mr. Ward was an avid reader and craftsman, and loved to read his bible and loved to attend church and gospel singing.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo Johnson Ward in 2005; a son, Farlen Dale Ward; five brothers, Clifton, Howard, Garfield, Dewey and Casey Ward; four sisters, Martha Ward, Mary Alice Hammitt, Evie Presnell and Bessie Lee Presnell.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Gail Ward Archer of Johnson City; two sons, Darrell Ward and wife, Cheryl and Dwayne Ward all of Jonesborough; a brother, Calvin Ward and his wife, Ruth of Johnson City; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Sue Ward of South Carolina; seven grandchildren, Carrington Dailey and husband, Ronnie, Eric Archer and wife, Robin, Arvin Ward and wife, Martha, Amanda Fralin and husband, Aaron, Christopher Ward and wife, Ashley, Jessica and Allison Ward; thirteen great-grandchildren; also many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Monday, February 15, 2016, in the Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ, 2733 Elizabethton Highway, Johnson City, with Pastor Donny Reagan officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church from 5:00 PM until the service hour. Other times at the home of his son, Darrell, 334 A.A. Deakins Road, Jonesborough.

Mr. Birchfield was a member of Long Hollow Mission Church and was a retired roofer. Betty Lou “Mousie” Waters, age 71, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with her Savior, her husband and her son on Saturday, September 18, 2021, from the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. Betty was born in Elizabethton to the late George Thomas Birchfield and Polly Jane Presnell Birchfield. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, whom she had missed dearly, Howard Waters; and her beloved son, Howard Waters, Jr.

Betty was a feisty lady who loved her family and her Lord fiercely. She never backed down from hard work and never failed to give you a smile when she saw you. Betty loved to craft and was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be dearly missed by many!

Rex B. Presnell, 67, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a lengthy illness. Rex was preceded in death by his father and mother, George W. and Nannie Byrd Presnell; a brother, Larry Presnell; a sister, Violet Gibson; his wife, Janie Presnell and her son, Curtis Terry. Rex, the youngest of 11 children, was a kind and loving person. He was a member of the Church of Christ and was a former employee of East Tennessee Undergarment Company and had also worked in the heating and air conditioning industry before retiring due to disability. Survivors include a brother, George Dean (Sandra) Presnell; seven sisters, Loretta (Ken) Rainbolt, June Winters, Ruth Parlier, Norma (David) Babb, Trena (Carl) Gibson, Pat (Clay) Montgomery and Diana (Ralph) Marlowe; his companion, Dula Hensley; his late wife’s son, Scott Rogers, and her grandchildren, Elle Terry and Jordan Rogers; and a large number of nieces, nephews and friends. A gathering of friends will be conducted from 1 until 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. The family would like to especially thank Debbie Shaffer for all her loving care given to Rex during his illness.

Lucille was born in Carter County to the late Oscar and Fannie Presnell Calhoun. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 20 years, Elisha Powell; two sons, Timothy Powell and Robert Powell; two daughters, Barbara Fraley and Iva Jean Hyder; one granddaughter, Wendy Garland; one sister, Joyce Pierce; two brothers, H.L. Calhoun and Doris Calhoun; and a son-in-law, James Hicks.
Lucille was a homemaker and had formerly worked at Winn-Dixie as a sales clerk. She was a loving mother and grandmother and loved everyone she met, she never knew a stranger. Lucille was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, crocheting and cooking Sunday dinner for her family.

Elkhart, Ind. - Joyce L. Pierce, 81, of Elkhart, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2015, at Riverside Village. She was born September 30, 1933, in Shell Creek, Tenn., to Oscar and Fannie (Presnell) Calhoun. She married Billy Ray Pierce, who preceded her in death on May 13, 1979. She was also preceded in death by a son, Nickie L. Walker, in 1978, and two brothers, H.L. Calhoun in 2010, and Dorse Calhoun, in 1931. Joyce was a homemaker who loved to crochet. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, singing at her church (the Freewill Baptist Church in Elizabethton, Tenn.) and listening to country and western music. She was known for her chocolate gravy. Surviving are two grandsons, Shannon and Aaron Walker, both of St. Cloud, Fla; two sisters, Lillian Potter of Elkhart and Lucille Powell of Elizabethton, Tenn.; an brother, Roger (Sandy) Calhoun of Elkhart; a sister-in-law, Nancy Calhoun of Mishawaka; and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be for two hours prior to the 3 p.m. Thursday, January 22, celebration of life service at the Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastor Rick Pirtle from the Riverview General Baptist Church will preside and cremation will follow the service.

Doyle Brewer, 89, of Carter County, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, February 24, 2022, following a brief illness. Doyle was born in Carter County to the late Paul and Laurina Presnell Brewer. In addition to his parents, Doyle was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Margaret Peeks Brewer, in 2001.
Doyle retired as a truck driver for Clark Lumber after many years of service. He would help anyone that was in need. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and being outside, listening to country music and his beloved dog.
Doyle was of the Christian faith.
Those left to cherish Doyle’s memory include his son, Danny Lee (Kathy) Brewer; two granddaughters, Mindy (Shaun) Malone and Becky Brewer and fiancé Travis; his great-grandchildren, Alexis Malone, Michelle Malone, Carter Malone, Bentley Malone and Chloe Babb; his step-grandchildren, James Garland, Justin Garland, Abigail Garland and Damien Babb; his sisters, Virginia (Lewis) Blevins, Dimple Brewer and Birdie (Ed) Smith Peters; and his brother, Kaye (Phyllis) Brewer. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and neighbors also survive.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Sycamore Shoals ICU for their tremendous care of Doyle during his illness.

JOHNSON CITY - Mr. Kay Brewer, age 83, of Johnson City, Tennessee passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2022 due to Lymphoma and Melanoma. A native of Carter County, Kay was born September 9, 1938 a son of the late Paul and Lorena Presnell Brewer. In addition to his parents, Kay was also preceded in death by a brother, Doyle Brewer.

Kay retired from the Peerless Restaurant after 42 years of employment. A member of Happy Valley Baptist Church, he had also attended Grace Baptist Church for several years. Kay achieved a lifetime award as a member of the 2022 Who’s Who in Tennessee Long-term Care. Kay was an excellent gardener and enjoyed fishing, woodworking and cooking. He also liked watching NASCAR, UT Football and loved going to the beach.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 65 years, Phyllis Nidiffer Brewer of the home; his daughter, Robbin (Bill) Elliott of Inman, South Carolina; his son, Steven (Irene) Brewer of Chenango Forks, New York; five grandchildren, Kristin (Aaron) Baird, Katie (Justin) Crowder, Justin Brewer, Amanda Brewer and Nicole Brewer; four great grandchildren, Morgan, Austin, Baylor and Brooks Baird; his sisters, Virginia Blevins, Dimple Brewer and Birdie SmithPeters; an aunt, Aline Weber; and his special friends, Craig Turner and Gary Kalogerous.

A graveside service to honor and celebrate the life of Kay Brewer will be conducted at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Chris Hughes officiating. Active pallbearers will be Aaron Baird, Austin Baird, Justin Brewer, Justin Crowder, Gary Kalogerous, Ian Knack, Eric McHenry and Craig Turner. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Blevins, Steve Brewer, Bill Elliott and the Grace Baptist Men’s Sunday School Class.

ELIZABETHTON- Grace Reed, 80, went to be with the Lord after a lengthy illness on Monday, May 7, 2018 at Franklin Woods Hospital.

She was a loving Pastor's wife, mother, and grandmother who loved her children with all her heart. Mrs. Reed was of the Pentecostal faith and was well known for her southern gospel singing. She traveled everywhere with her husband singing and spreading the gospel.

She was preceded in death by her son; Paul Wesley Reed; parents, Harmon and Bonnie Grace Presnell; 2 sisters, Helen Sue Jenkins and Hazel Lambert; 2 brothers, Paul Presnell and Sherrill Presnell.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Evangelist Phil Reed; 7 children, Roy Reed and wife Cindy, Donna Reed, Mark Reed, Grace Ann White and husband Scott, Geneva Carriger and husband Gerald, Daniel Reed, James Reed and wife Shelby; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; brother, Billy Presnell; several nieces and nephews.

The going home celebration will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 11, 2018 in the East chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Pastor G.B. Garland and Evangelist Johnny Persinger officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until the service hour.

Graveside services will follow at McCarty cemetery, Jonesborough. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Sarah Lucille Birchfield, 87 of Limestone entered into God’s glorious Kingdom Tuesday, May 9, 2023. She was born on March 9, 1936 in Washington County. Lucille was a devout Pentecostal by faith. She enjoyed singing, attending church services, revivals and spending time with her friends and family. Lucille also loved the family dog, “Buddy” who was a great companion and comfort to her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Margaret Earp Ward; a sister, Mary Radford; her late husband, Robert Miller; her children, Darryl Byrd, Kevin Byrd, Joel Byrd and Kathy Byrd.
Lucille leaves behind a family whom she treasured and loved, Allen Byrd and wife, Tammy of Limestone, Brenda Adams and husband, Mark of Elizabethton, Ivan Byrd of Telford and Wade Byrd and wife, Lori of Johnson City; brothers, J.R. Ward and wife, Sandra and Paul Ward and wife, Nadine; sisters, Betty Cochran and Pauline Honeycutt; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; also many nieces and nephews. Lucille will always be remembered by her walk with Jesus Christ, her love, compassion and her kindness.
Funeral services for Lucille will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, Mat 13, 2023 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Rev. Wesley Ward officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the service hour. Graveside services will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff of Life Care Center of Gray for the love and care shown to Lucille during her last days here on earth.

JOHNSON CITY - Jack Presnell, 73, Johnson City passed away Monday, August 2, 2021 in the James H. Quillen Medical Center. He was a native of Banner Elk, NC and was the son of the late Conley and Bessie Lee Ward Presnell. Jack retired from Empire Furniture Company and attended Johnson City Baptist Temple. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served is country during the Vietnam War. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Jason Presnell.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Presnell; three children, Jeff Presnell and wife, Elizabeth of Kingsport, Janet Presnell and Justin Presnell both of the home. Five sisters, Freda Presnell of Johnson City, Peggy Stewart of West Virginia, Bonnie Sims and husband, Teddy of Elizabethton, Vernie Turbyfill and husband, Teddy of Jonesborough and Lucy Ollis and husband, Gary of Johnson City; three grandchildren, Shannon, Taylor and Gavin Presnell; also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Jack will be conducted at 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 4, 2021 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Rev. Wilkie Brookshire officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 PM until the service hour. Graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, August 5, 2021 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery Annex. Pallbearers will be Teddy Sims, Teddy Turbyfill, Gary Ollis, Jeff Presnell, Justin Presnell and Gavin Presnell. Bill Cash will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
