He was born September 18, 1915. Mr. Estep is preceded in death by parents, Crit and Eliza Estep; five sisters and two brothers. He is survived by wife of 56 years, Lois, of Cocoa, Florida; son, Glen, from Knoxville, TN; daughter, Becky from Huntsville, TN; two grandchildren, Brian and Todd; two great-grandchildren, Brian Keith, Jr. and Brianna.

He graduated from The University of Tennessee Knoxville. Mr. Estep has served as a Teacher, Guidance Counselor, Principal, Superintendent of Schools of Carter County and College Professor. He was retired with 42 years service in Tennessee and Florida. Funeral services will be 8:00 p.m. Saturday, January 27, 2001 in Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jack T. Lyons officiating. Graveside services will be held Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in The Sunrise Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6-8 p.m. prior to the service. Arrangements made by Smith Funeral Home in Rutledge, Tennessee.

A veteran of World War II, winning four battle stars as a Combat Infantryman in the European Theatre. He was wounded in France in 1944, as a member of Company A, 117th Infantry, 30th Division, which was inducted into Federal Service in Elizabethton in 1940. He served with this unit and with a sister regiment for more than five years during the conflict. Following the war, he entered the US Postal Service and was employed at the Elizabethton Post Office as a rural mail carrier on Route 6. He was a member of the American Legion,Watauga Post #49.He was a member the Oak Street Baptist Church, faithfully serving on the Board of Deacons for the past several years.

Virginia L. Ellis, 88, born June 22, 1922, of Elizabethton died Sunday, May 15, 2011 in Ivy Hall Nursing Home, Elizabethton.

She was the daughter of the late Robert T. and Katherine Shell Ellis. She was born in Erwin, Unicoi County, Tennessee but moved to Carter County at an early age and grew up in the Keenburg Community.

She was employed in the Comptroller's Department of Beaunit Corporation as secretary and cashier for twenty-three years and later worked as a bookkeeper in the Superintendent's Office of the Carter County School System for seventeen years, retiring in 1983. Ms. Ellis was a member of Borderview Christian Church. She also had been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a volunteer for the Carter County Adult Reading Program. She always displayed a love and an interest in the welfare of others, and cared for the sick and the elderly as long as her health permitted.

Ms. Ellis was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Ellis and by brothers, Jack T. Ellis, Walter Pat Ellis, Harold R. Ellis and Phillip E. Ellis; and by nephews, David Ellis, Lynn Ellis and a niece, Kimberly Lewey.

Survivors include her husband, Winston Redford, Johnson City; six nieces, Kelly Ellis White, Chattanooga, TN, Elaine E. Cook, Abingdon, VA; Katherine E. Barker, Hester E. Honeycutt, Barbara E. Melton and Nancy Katherine Ellis, all of Elizabethton, and three nephews, Jack Patrick Ellis, Ringgold, GA, H. Douglas Ellis, Abingdon, VA and Frederick L. Ellis, Elizabethton.

Funeral service for Virginia L. Ellis will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Monday, May 16, 2011 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with eulogy to be given by Mr. Scott Reynolds. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Scott Reynolds and Mr. Ray Don Markland. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00-7:00 P.M. on Monday prior to the funeral service.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 17, 2011 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be her family, friends; special friends, Charlotte Newton, Jo Ann Bowers, Richard Tittle and Winfrey Curtis, neighbors and her church family. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 9:55 A.M. on Tuesday for the graveside service.

JONESBOROUGH - Albert Thomas Hicks, 87, Jonesborough passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2016 in the James H. Quillen VA. Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charles Garfield & Ida Ellis Hicks. He had lived in Jonesborough for the past 45 years. Albert served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a retired Welder and was a member of Local 538 Plumbers & Fitters Union, Johnson City. He was a member of Cherokee Baptist Church where he previously had served as Trustee and served on the Cemetery Committee. His hobbies were woodworking and farming. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Florence Jennings and Pauline Elliott and a brother: James Hicks.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years: Sue Miller Hicks. One sister & brother-in-law: Bonnie Harold Stout, Elizabethton. Two Brothers: Bobby Jack Hicks, Hampton and Harold Hicks, Elizabethton. Several nieces & nephews, he was like a father to them.

She is survived by her brothers, Harold Hicks of Elizabethton and Bobbie Jack Hicks (Shirley) of Hampton; her sister-in-law, Sue Hicks; her daughters, Donna Hayes of Nashville, Dena Wilson of Elizabethton, and Paulette Davis (John) of Elizabethton; her step-children, Tony Stout (Lisa) of Bluffton, S.C., and Anlyn Hughes (John) of Springfield; her grandchildren, Landon Chambers (Kristen), Ashly Difatta (Antonio), Corey Whitehead (Beth), and Bruce Perry (Brittany); her step-grandchildren, Kendall Stout and Kailee Stout; her great-grandchildren, Dylan Chambers, Jada and Dylan Whitehead and Antonio Difatta. The family extends special thanks to her dear friend, Sharran Davis.

Harold Dean Hicks, 83, Elizabethton, died peacefully and entered heaven to join his beloved friends and family who preceded him in death, on Monday, December 5, 2022, at Holston Valley Hospital, Kingsport.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charles Garfield and Ida Belle Ellis Hicks.
Harold was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and a retired employee of Dixie Battery. He was a member of Borderview Christian Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Pauline Elliott, Florence Jennings and Bonnie Stout, and two brothers, James Hicks and Albert Hicks.
Harold was the family historian, genealogist, and comedian. He had a memory that was razor sharp. Friends and family enjoyed his many tales of growing up in Tin Can Hollow in Elizabethton. He welcomed all who visited his cozy home with a “look who is coming there, get in this house.” He enjoyed reminiscing with his visitors and filling in the gaps of their fading memories.
He is one of a generation who remained true to his roots and valued his history and his family and friends.
Survivors include a brother, Bob Hicks and companion, Carolyn Dail, Knoxville. He was a beloved uncle to several nieces and nephews; was surrogate father to many.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 11, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Scott Fisher, minister, officiating. Music will be provided by the Borderview Christian Church. Honorary pallbearers will be his church family, the Harmony Baptist Church Family and his many many friends. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Emmert Cemetery.

Betty (Moore) Pritchard, 89, of Elizabethton, Tenn., was welcomed home into the arms of her Savior on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Betty was born in Elizabethton to the late Rondy and Callie (Ellis) Moore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Landon Pritchard; her brother, RJ Moore; and grandmother, Bettie Moore. Betty loved people, entertaining at family gatherings and most of all the Lord and her family. She was a people person that was born with the gift of hospitality and was very generous and loving. Betty was also a hard worker and had milked cows on her family farm – Moore’s Dairy – for more than 25 years and drove a tractor-trailer for more than 20 years. She was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church in Stoney Creek and served as the organist there for many years, sang in the church choir and was part of a trio years ago. Most of all Betty loved her family and cooking for them, making cakes, hosting parties, playing Bingo and playing with her cats. Those left to cherish and remember Betty include her daughters, Nancy (Barry) Taylor, Karen (David) Calloway and Tracy (Alan) Shepard; her grandchildren, Jack (Jodi) Buckles, Misty (Aaron) Lloyd, Jamie (Jared) Garfield, Alan (Tristyl) Shepard Jr. and Rhonda (Andy) Blevins; her great-grandchildren, Madisyn (Josiah), Brayden, Jackson, Carson, Alexis, Camden, Karlee, Bryson, Thomas, Kristen, Mason and Spenser; and a very special friend, Sue Bowers. Several other extended family members that will miss Betty also survive. A celebration of Betty’s life will be conducted at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 8, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Dr. Dennis Deese officiating. A eulogy will be given by Betty’s great-granddaughter, Madisyn Cannon. Special music will be provided by Sue Bowers and Patty Hodge. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, April 10, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Lenny Smith officiating. ELIZABETHTON - Grady Ben Fair, 89, Elizabethton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 1, 2016 in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Ben & Ida Nell Estep Fair. Grady proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was retired from the Dairy Business having owned and operated Farm Best Dairy for several years. He was an active member of East River Park Christian Church where he was a greeter and he was the candy man for the children. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Norma Lowe Fair, two brothers: Dana & Wayne Fair and one sister: Carolyn Runnion.

He is survived by his second wife: Lavelle "Bo" Hopson Fair; Son Steve & Ruth Ann Fair (Ben, Tim & Sarah), Daughter: Susan & Kenton Farr (Kelly, Nick), Son: David (Hunter & Chase). Two Step-sons: Danny Gourley, Rutledge, Tenn. and Richard Gourley, of Florida. Also survived by 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, September 4, 2016 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. John H. Smith, and Nick Farr Ministers officiating. Survivors include her mother, Iris Jenkins Ellis; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Mike Melton; her nephews, Vance and Dan Melton; several cousins; and many beloved friends.
It was her wish to be cremated and no services are planned.

ELIZABETHTON - Ann Ellis Melton, 65, Elizabethton, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, March 4, 2021 at her residence. She was born November 10, 1955 in Elizabethton. She was a 1973 graduate of Elizabethton High School and East Tennessee State University where she was an Art Major. She was a homemaker and prior to that she was an employee of the Carter County Health Department. Barbara was a happy member of Immanuel Baptist Church She was preceded in death by her father: Jack Ellis and a sister: Nancy Ellis.

Survivors include her husband of 34 years: Mike Melton. Two Sons: Vance Tipton Melton and Daniel Taylor Melton. Her Mother: Iris Jenkins Ellis. Her special cousins and very close friends: Hester Honeycutt, Katherine Ellis, Lou Ellis, Wayne Jenkins, Patty Smith Humphrey, Danny “Pert” Jenkins, Doug Ellis, Jackie Roke and other special cousins.

A Service to Celebrate the life of Barbara Melton will be conducted at 6 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2021 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Travis Biller and Pastor Carroll Melton officiating.
