    Mrs. Etta Mary Smith, 88, died at her home, Rte. 1, Sunday night at 10:15 pm. She was a lifelong resident of Johnson County and a member of the Christian Church. She is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Ella Gentry, Mrs. Cora Nelson, Mrs. Carol Vickson and Mrs. Betty Maxwell of Mountain City, Mrs. Bella Jones of Shouns and Mrs. Lula Smith of Bristol; six sons, David, Fred, Charles and Pete Smith of Mountain City, and Wiley of Neva; two brothers, Andrew and William Phillippi of Indiana; 65grandchildren and 78 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the Liberty Chrisitan Church Tuesday afternoon at 2 pm with Rev. Jim Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Wilson cemetery in Mountain City. Active pallbearers were the grandsons. The body was moved to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Betty Maxwell, Rte. 1, Monday afternoon.

    MRS. ELLA GENTRY... 71, wife of J. A. Gentry, died at her home the morning of March 14 after a long illness. She was a member of the Liberty Christian Church.
    She is survived by her husband and the following children: Selmer of Wooster, O.; Wade, Emory, Gayther, Dale and Thurmond of Mountain City; Mrs. Mina Ellison of Todd, N.C.;. six brothers, Dave, Charley, Fred, Pete, and Don Smith, all of Mountain City.
    Funeral was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the home. Rev. R. T. Mabry was incharge.
    Pallbearers and flower bearers were nieces and nephews.
    Burial followed in Phillippi cemetery.

    Cora Ann Nelson, age 87, of Route 1, Mountain City, died Tuesday evening 10:30 p.m. in the Johnson County Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She was a native of Johnson County and a daughter of the late Andy and Etta Phillippi Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, John King Nelson on July 23, 1965. She was a member of Liberty Christian Church. Survivors include three sons, King Nelson, Jr., Jim Nelson and Sam Nelson, all of Mountain City; four daughters, Mrs. William Jones, Mrs. Charles Mills, Mrs. Tyler Smith and Mrs. James B . Wills, all of Mountain City; two step-children, Tom Nelson and Mrs. Ervin Sparks, both of Johnson City; 29 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday morning at the Lewis Gentry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ernest Carrier officiating. Interment will follow in the Phillippi Cemetery. The pallbearers will be grandsons. Flower-bearers will be ladies who attend the service. The family will receive friends Thursday evening at the hours of 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home chapel where the body will remain throughout the services. Friends can call at the residence on Route 1, Mountain City, anytime. Lewis Gentry Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

    Notes:

    Therman Carroll Gentry, age 97 of the Cold Springs Community in Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Friday May 4th, 2018 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA. He was born July 30th, 1920 in the Johnson County to the late Joseph A. Gentry and Ella Smith Gentry. In addition to his parents he was predeceased in death by: a sister, Mina Gentry, and brothers: Selmar, Wade, Emory, Gaither, and Richard Dale.

    He was a 50 year Mastor Mason of Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #243 F&AM.

    He enjoyed playing old time music, working crossword puzzles, and spending spending time with his cattle and dogs.

    Therman worked for 20 years as a foreman for T.V.A, he also had many years as a long distance truck driver.

    Those left to cherish Therman's memory include, his wife, Evelyn Johnson Gentry, daughters: Carolyn Davis and husband, Jim of Rose Hill, Virginia, and Becky Gentry of Mountain City.

    Sons: Ted and wife Janie Gentry of Mountain City, and Scott Gentry of Mountain City, TN. Six Grand – children and Nine Great-Grandchildren.

    Memorial Service for Therman will be held Monday, May 14th 2018 at 2 PM in the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of the Hux & Lipford Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at 1 PM. Pastor Con Sauls to officiate.

    Reba Nelson Wills - MOUNTAIN CITY

    Reba Nelson Wills, age 90, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, November 8, 2010 at her residence.

    She was born on February 4, 1920 in Johnson County, Tennessee to the late John King Nelson Sr. and Cora Smith Nelson. In addition to her parents, Reba was preceded in death by her husband James Baxter 'Jay' Wills, who passed away on November 10, 2005; three sisters: Vadie Mills, Anna Mae Dickens and Chelsea Jones; three brothers: Jim Nelson, Sam Nelson and John King Nelson Jr. During World War II, Reba taught at some of the Community Schools. She loved to work at home, keeping her house, gardening, cooking and also loved to read.

    Reba is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Nancy Wills Shoun and husband Tommy Jack and Linda Wills Woodring and husband Morris of Mountain City, TN; two sons and daughters-in-law: James B. 'Jim' Wills Jr. and wife Charlotte of Knoxville, TN and Mike Wills and wife Bernadene of Mountain City, TN; grandchildren: T.J. Shoun, Judd Shoun, Susan Woodring, Brock Woodring, Jamie Wills, Chrissy Wills, Amy Wills McLaughlin and husband Josh and Gary Wills; one sister, Danford Smith of Mountain City, TN; brother-in-law, Lewis Wills; sister-in-law, Dorothy Shore and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

    The family will receive friends from 1-3:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Mr. Ron Drake to officiate. Music will be provided by Ms. Sandra Fortune.

    Graveside Service and Interment will follow from the Wills Cemetery.

    Active Pallbearers will be five grandsons: T.J. Shoun, Judd Shoun, Brock Woodring, Jamie Wills and Gary Wills; sons-in-law, Morris Woodring and Tommy Jack Shoun and grandson-in-law, Josh McLaughlin.

    Honorary Pallbearers are: Keith Burgess, Mac Phillips, Sammy Wilson, David Wilson, Bob Stansbery, Odell Johnson, Tim Brown, John Greer, Jim Stanley, Bobby Nelson, Joe Triplett, Dr. John Whitlock, James Pennington, Junior Pennington and Lester Mallett.

    Sue Smith Howard died peacefully on June 7, 2018, at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, VA.

    She was born in Lundale, West Virginia, February 23, 1936 to the late Wiley Brownlow Smith and Ora Cornett Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters Opal Smith Douglas, Louise Smith Helton, Ethel Smith Walker, and a brother Ernest Smith.

    As a young girl, she lived with her family in West VA and moved to Mountain City when she was four. She had one brother and six sisters including Tulee that passed away when she was a few days old. At the age of eight, she cooked for the whole family, while the older siblings did chores on a farm in the Crackers Neck Community.
    Sue and Malcolm met in high school and married on August 18, 1954 in Conowingo, Maryland at the ages of 17 and 18. They started their married life living with Malcolm's father, the late Roby J. Howard, at the family home place. They eventually moved into an apartment in Mountain City while they built a house on land they purchased, which was part of the Howard Farm.

    Malcolm farmed, raised hogs, turkeys, and cattle. He grew corn, tobacco, and beans. Sue worked at Farmers State Bank. When the Leco Manufacturing plant came into the county, they both found employment. Sue worked there for seven years, and Malcolm worked for nine years. Before his employment at Leco, Malcolm worked at the Raytheon Plant in Bristol. Sue left the plant in order to stay home with the children.

    Five years later, she opened a small shop known as Mountaineer Arts Crafts and Gift Shop. This business was Located in a part of the Arney's Grill building which they purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Jack Arney. During this time Sue taught classes in Macrame, Ceramics, Cake Decorating, and leather work. She kept the business for 12 years.
    Malcolm and Sue own and operate a part of the original Roby J. Howard Sr. Farm, and have lived there for 58 years.
    Sue was very active in the community. She was leader of Girl Scout Troop 268 for many years. She was a member and served as a president of most of the following clubs: Laurel Bloomery Home Demonstration Club, Johnson County Garden Club, Johnson County Arts Council, Family Community Education Club, Johnson County Historical Society, Heritage Hall Renovation Committee, and Johnson County Community Theater. She received a State Volunteer Award in Family Community Education. She served two terms as a Johnson County Commissioner, serving the First District. She was past president of the Johnson County Republican Women's Club, which she helped to organize. She received a Tennessee Volunteer Accommodation Award, presented by State Representative, Jason Mumpower, for Governor, Don Sunquist, for Community service. She was also involved in Tennessee Bicentennial. Sue was a Charter Heritage Hall Member. She was named Club Woman of the Year in 1978, served on the Board of the State of Tennessee 4-H Club Alumni in 1982-1983. Sue had her own radio program at 7:00 each morning, for 15 plus years. This program was very popular on the local WMCT Radio Station. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was very involved in the ETSU Kellogg program. Sue was also very well known in the community for her country cooking and had written many recipes.

    The Howard's are members of First Christian Church , and Sue has served on many committees, including the Nellie Bryan Guild.

    Sue loved all of her family dearly and loved attending events and outings that her grandchildren and great grandchildren were involved in. She also enjoyed gardening and bowling. She was a competitive bowler. Both of them were past members of the Boone, NC Tuesday night league. They have both entered tournaments that led them to USBC National Tournaments. Sue and Malcolm both have bowled in the National Bowling Arena in Reno, Nevada. Sue also bowled in Syracuse, NY and in Green Bay, Wisconsin in August, 2015 where she won the Women's Senior USBC Championship. She received the coveted Wall of Honor Award in 2013, which is voted on by league members.

    She loved the beauty of her county, her state, and her nation. She was a lifelong collector of antiques and collectibles, especially Elvis Presley memorabilia and also went to see him in concert twice.

    A special thank you to staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Amedisys, and the many special friends that have sent cards, brought food, and visited her in the last five months.

    Those left to cherish her memories include: Husband and Soulmate of 63 years and 10 months, Malcolm Howard, Sr., sons Malcolm Howard, Jr. (Donna), Randy Howard, daughter Dottie Sue Phipps (Mark), grandchildren Rita Howard Reese (Lars), Dayton Howard, Staci Phipps Byrd (Mark), Mandy Howard Reichenbach FNP-BC (Chris), Ashley Howard, Brandy Phipps (Samantha), Laurel Howard (Tony), Crisie Jennings, Daniel Phipps, great grandchildren Aubree Glenn, Alaina Perry, Nathaniel (Nate) Price, Mya Reichenbach, Raelynn Hughes, Abigail Phipps, Alaina Phipps, Norman Reese, Milianna Hughes, sisters Kathleen Smith Davidson (Bill), Trilla Smith Little (Buddy), brothers-in-law Earl Howard, Walter G. Adams, and many many special nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews. Special friends of many years include: Carolyn Ray and the late Bruce Ray, Thelma Lipford, Ina Bellamy, Lorraine Ray, Mary and Bruce Triplett, Mary Nave, Peggy and Buster Brown, Peggy and Ken Rowman, Karen McMillan and Cecil Griffin, Brenda Gambill, Starla and Pete Brooks, Ted and Margaret Spivey, Judy and Fred Ramsey, Hal and Sarah Johnson, Jack and Joann Swift, Bill and Kathy Terrill, Janet Payne and the late Ray Payne, Mark and Pam Billingsley, and Janet Towry. A special thanks to nephew, C.J. Douglas, who considered her his second mother.

    The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 12:30-2:30 at Mountain City Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 2:30 with Pastors Frank Ransom and Dwayne Dickson officiating. Special music will be provided by Nancy Davis. Graveside service and interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers are Doug Mink, Danny Grindstaff and Clay Neely.
    At other times, the family will receive friends at the home on Dry Stone Branch Road.

    … seven-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. King Nelson, Jr., Rte. 1, Mountain City, died unexpectedly in an Abingdon, Va. hospital Friday afternoon, Jan. 27, after a brief illness.
    Survivors are the parents; two brothers, Tommy and Johnny Nelson of the home; one sister, Lois of the home; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. King Nelson, Rte 1; and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Stanley of Damascus, Va.
    Funeral services were held at the home Sunday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Edsel Farthing officiating.

    ROANOKE, VA - Malcolm Stuart Howard Jr., age 62, of Roanoke, Virginia and formerly of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

    He was born on April 22, 1956 to Malcolm Howard Sr. and the late Sue Smith Howard, who passed away June 7th, 2018. In addition to his mother Malcolm was preceded in death by his grandparents.

    Malcolm was a 1974 graduate of Johnson County High School. Throughout his school days he was active in football, 4-H Club, Boy Scouts, Drama Club and the FFA. He attended college at ETSU and obtained a degree in banking from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. While Malcolm worked as a banker, he was a true salesman by nature, never meeting a stranger. He sold cars, mobile homes, furniture and antiques. He was co-owner of Donnelly House Antiques and Collectibles for more than 20 years. At the time of his passing, Malcolm was still working in antiques, traveling the country selling through his independent business, High Noon Antiques.

    His passion in life was his family, but he also enjoyed football, food (especially a Bizzie Burger) and community theatre. He last performed in a play directed by his mother, entitled 'Our Town'.

    Those left to cherish his memories include his 'Darlin', Donna, his girlfriend of 11 years; father, Malcolm Howard Sr.; daughters; Rita Reese (Lars), Mandy Reichenbach (Chris) and Ashley Howard; brother, Randal Howard; sister, Dottie Sue Phipps (Mark);grandchildren, Aubree, Raelynn, Milianna, Norman, Alaina, Mya, Piper, and another grandchild on the way; many special aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; special friends, Steve Arnold, Jesse Ludy, Richard Wittenberg, Robert 'Shines' Pastoreck, Charles and Pam Burke.

    The family will receive friends from 12:30 -2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 21, 2019 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Dwayne Dickson officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow the funeral at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Cousins and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Steve Arnold, Jesse Ludy, Richard Wittenberg, Robert 'Shines' Pastoreck and Charles Burke.
