    James Frank Hughes, Sr., age 94, of Linville, NC passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2019, at his home with his family present.

    He was born on June 20, 1925, in Linville, NC, a son of the late C.H. Hughes and the late Bertha Boone Hughes.

    He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II having served in Europe. C.H. Hughes and his sons, Dave and Jim, started the Linville Lumber Co. in 1945 and built the Pixie Motel, of which Jim and Marietta became the sole owners of in 1962. A lifelong Republican, Jim had served as a Representative and a Senator in the North Carolina General Assembly and as the Linville Precinct Chairman for more than 60 years. He established and was the President of the nonprofit Florence Boyd Home. He was proud of the summer camps the Florence Boyd Home ran for underprivileged children and the help given to those in need through the nonprofit.

    He was a charter member of the Pineola Moose Lodge, served as a Certified Emergency Medical Technician, was a member of the Linville Lodge #489 and a Shriner.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a Brother: Dave Hughes; two Sisters: Grace Daniels, Marian Garland; and Grandson: David Lee Hughes.

    Jim leaves behind to cherish his memory his Wife of 72 years: Marietta Pittman Hughes of Linville, NC; Daughter: Kaye Hughes of Linville, NC; Daughter, Sharon "Shad" Peters of Linville, NC; Son: James F. Hughes, Jr. of Linville, NC; Sister: Helen Hughes of Linville, NC; Sister: Christine Billings of Rural Hall, NC; Sister: Shirley Gelston of Denver, CO; Brother: Paul Hughes of Linville, NC; Brother: Ralph "Ted" Hughes of Fort Mill, SC; Grandchildren: Sanford Hughes Greene, Hannah Greene, Lindsey Peters, Charlie Peters, Lauren Cox, James F. "Trey" Hughes, III; Great Grandchildren: Ayla Greene, Gavin Peters, Finch Coffman, Michael Peters and Levi Kissell.

    The family will receive friends beginning at 2:30 pm on Monday, July 22, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with a service to Celebrate his Life to begin at 4 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. Lonnie Barnes and Rev. Donald Gragg officiating. Masonic Rites will be offered following the service in the chapel. Interment will follow in the Tanglewood Cemetery, with military honors to be provided by the Pat Ray Post of the VFW.

    Marian was a traditional lady, who loved her family. She enjoyed working in the flower garden, watching Fox News and listening to country music. She was a member of Linville United Methodist Church.

    Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her Husband: Ralph Garland; her second husband: Dave Floyd, Sister: Grace Daniels; Brother: Dave Hughes; and Great-Grandchild: Baily Shane Garland.

    Marian leaves behind to cherish her memory her Daughter: Linda King of Linville, NC.; Sons: Robert (Carolyn) Garland of Linville, NC; Scott Lee (partner Tim Heschke) Garland of Linville, NC; Stepson: Roger (Freddie) Floyd of Jackson, SC; Sisters: Helen Hughes of Linville, NC, Christine Billings of Rural Hall, NC, Barbara Gelston of Denver, Colorado; Brothers: James (Marietta "Buddy") Hughes of Linville, NC, Paul (Faye) Hughes of Linville, NC and Ted (Joan) Hughes of Tegacay, SC.

    Grandchildren: Shannon Garland, Shane (Karen) Garland, Tamara Garland; and Great-Grandchildren: Noah Garland, Dalton Carswell also survive.

    Services for Marian H. Garland will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, 2018, at Linville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ted Henry officiating.

    The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

    Interment will be in the Tanglewood Cemetery.

    Ralph Stedman "Ted" Hughes, 82, of Tega Cay, SC, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020, at the Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. He was born on July 15, 1937, in Avery County to the late Columbus Henry and Bertha Boone Hughes. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his First wife: Shelby Jean Hughes; one Son: Mark Henry Hughes; two Brothers: Dwight David Hughes and James Frank Hughes; and two Sisters: Graces Daniels and Marian Garland.

    Ted was a United States Army Veteran and served in the Korean War. After leaving the Army he worked as an Assistant Golf Professional at Mimosa Hills in Morganton, NC and then went on to become the Assistant Greens Superintendent at the Grandfather Golf Country Club before becoming the Greens Superintendent in Tega Cay, SC for over 20 years. He later went on to work in the recycling industry. Ted attended Bible Baptist in Fort Mill, SC. He was well known as the "Old Golf Pro" AKA "THE GOAT." Ted was a loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family making wonderful memories that they will cherish. He also enjoyed making good liquor and playing golf at Tega Cay Golf Club.

    Ralph is survived by his loving Spouse: Joan Tappmeyer Leadbetter Hughes; one Son: JD Hughes; three Sisters: Helen Hughes of Linville, Christine Billings of Rural Hall, and Shirley Gelston of Denver, Colo.; one Brother: Paul Hughes and wife Fay of Linville, NC; two Grandsons: James Avery Hughes of Plumtree and Henry Grant Hughes of Chapel Hill; one Step daughter: Kimberly Waldo and husband, Wes, of Lancaster, SC; and four Step grandchildren: Logan Waldo of Columbia, SC, Abigal Denkins and husband McKenzie of Travelers Rest, SC, Lindsey Waldo and Megan Waldo, both of Lancaster, SC.

    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. James Heaton officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Newland VFW Ray Pat Post #4286.

    The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

    Interment will follow immediately after the service at Tanglewood Cemetery.
