    Notes:

    Clarence A. Winters, age 90, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family members on April 21, 2018. He was born May 8, 1927, in Avery County to the late Howard Lindsay Winters and Lula Octava (Oakes) Winters. He was preceded on death by three sons: Clifford Allen, Douglas Arthur, and Marion Alexander, and three brothers, three sisters, and one granddaughter.

    Clarence is survived by his wife of 71 years, Melba Jean Barrier Winters of the home; three sons: Marlon Lavon Winters (Rhonda) of Asheboro, Larry D. Winters (Victoria) of Hudson, Keith Eldon Winters of the home, Loree Dawn Stackhouse (Mason) of Panaca, Nev. He is also survived by one brother: Thomas Emmitt Winters of Spruce Pine; and sisters: Carol June Winters Ollis of Morganton, and Delphia Jean Winters of LaFollette, Tenn..

    Additional survivors include grandchildren: David Winters (Susan) of Clemson, SC, Jeremy Winters (Andrea) of Statesville, Alicia Robinson (Neil) of Mt. Holly, Lynette Brewer (Aaron) of Mooresville, Paige Stanich of Statesville, Cameron Reed (Shannon) of Lehi, Utah, Krista Patrick (Thomas) of Rogers, Ark., Robert Winters of Millville, Utah, Richard Winters (Savannah) of Eagle Mtn., Utah, Megan Boring (Wade) of Millville, Utah, Michael Winters of Logan, Utah, and 15 great-grandchildren.

    He was a loving husband, devoted father, and grandfather.

    At the outbreak of WWII, he joined the United States Navy and served for two and a half years. He retired as a mail carrier of the US Postal Service after 28 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 16 in Newton, NC, and an honorary member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

    He was a lifetime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in multiple positions of leadership. His passion was genealogy and researching family history, as evidenced by his 18 years of working with the local genealogy library. He has written 18 family history books and helped organize the Genealogy Society of Catawba County, where he served as the co-president and was a co-author of the Catawba County Heritage Book. Clarence loved to talk and share stories of his experiences; stories and sometimes tall tales that were found during his researching of the genealogies of families within this region.

    The family will receive family and friends at Jenkins Funeral Home, Startown Road, Newton, NC, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 27, 2018. The funeral service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Thorneburg Drive, Conover, NC, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 28. Following the service, a private burial service will be held at the family cemetery, the White Pine Cemetery in Newland, NC.

    In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to Catawba Regional Hospice.
