ELIZABETHTON — William Roy Arney, 84, Elizabethton, passed away Monday November 1, 2010, in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late James David and Alice Dugger Arney. He had lived most of his life in Carter County. Roy was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. He had worked for several years at North American Rayon Corporation and retired from The Raytheon Corporation, Bristol.

He served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Blevins Arney; four brothers: Haskell, Duke, John David and Earl Arney; and two sisters: Marie Potter and Norma Hart.

Survivors include a son & daughter-in-law: David & Jennifer Arney, Elizabethton; and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Randy Johnson officiating.

Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 4, 2010, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Loren Harris. A Patriotic Tribute will be played by Mr. Arney's son, David Arney, following the funeral service.

Active Pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, will be: Kenneth Arney, John Arney, Haskell "Buddy" Arney, Richard Knode, Clyde Williams and Carl Roberson. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion and Tennessee National Guard.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of his son & daughter-in-law: David & Jennifer Arney, 729 Fairway Drive, Elizabethton. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Thursday to go to the cemetery.

McDonald Slemp, age 89, of Mountain City, passed away Wednesday, February 06, 2008 in Johnson City Medical Center.
Mr. Slemp was born on May 24, 1918 in Johnson County to the late Charlie F. and Nettie Arney Slemp. He was a truck driver for many years and retired from Tri-State Growers. He liked to farm and garden. He was a member of Vaughts Gap Baptist Church.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Elsie Mercer, Venie Wilson and Clydie Bear; brother, Orville Slemp; and a son-in-law, Jim Rupard.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Ruby Perkins Slemp; three daughters, Linda Rupard of Winston-Salem, NC, Karen Icenhour and husband Tom of Mountain City and Donna L. West and husband Dr. Mike West of Knoxville; two sons, Buddy Slemp of Lexington, NC and Jack Slemp and wife Olive, of Lexington, NC; sister, Elizabeth Gentry of Mountain City; grandchildren, Chris, Alisa, Billy, Michael, Debbie and Frankie; great grandchildren, Thomas, Matthew, Kelsey, Brandy, T. The family of Elizabeth Priscilla Slemp Gentry are saddened to announce the passing of their beloved Mother on December 18, 2021, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was 97 years of age at the time of her passing. Elizabeth was a daughter, Mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother, friend, farmer, and homemaker. She was born at home in the Neva community of Johnson County, Tennessee, on December 30, 1923, to Charles Franklin “Charlie” and Nettie Florence Arney Slemp. Elizabeth attended Brownlow Elementary School and Johnson County High School from which she graduated in 1941. She furthered her education by attending Business School in Elizabethton, Tennessee. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, reading her Bible, spending time with family and being an active member of the Johnson County Senior center. She was a member Pleasant View Christian Church and also attended God’s Country Church.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, her five siblings Elsie Slemp Mercer and husband, Paul, of Winsor, Virginia; Vennie Slemp Wilson and husband Robert of Mountain City, Tennessee; Clydie Slemp Bear and husband Marion, of Champaign, Illinois; Orville Slemp and wife Lola of Mountain City, Tennessee; McDonald Slemp and wife Ruby of Mountain City, Tennessee, her two husbands, Carl Smith Courtner and Richard Dale Gentry, and one grandson, Mark Blaine Courtner of Mountain City, Tennessee.
Those left to treasure memories of Elizabeth are her four sons Lynn Courtner and wife Carlene of Mountain City, Tennessee; C. Alma Timbs, age 89, of 577 Laurel Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2013, at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton, Tennessee.
She was born on November 16, 1923, to the late Edd and Eliza Moody Arney. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Zeke Timbs; also sisters Goldie Arney and Hazel Clawson; and a brother, Lawrence Arney.
She loved fishing with her husband and cooking for her family.
She was a member of Vaughts Gap Baptist Church.
Survivors include: daughter: Lucille Brown and Husband, Harvey, Mountain City, TN; Three sons: Jim Timbs and wife, Wanda, Mountain City, TN, Herman Timbs and wife, Betty, Mountain City, TN, Joe Timbs and Wife, Betty, Lenior, N.C.; Brother; Maurice Arney and wife, Mary, of Mountain City, TN; Ten grandchildren; Twelve Great Grandchildren; Three great, great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Erby Lee Johnson, age 82, of Mountain City, TN went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born August 6, 1934 to the late Whitlaw Johnson and Una Louisa Arney Johnson. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having retired after 23 years of service. Following his retirement from the military, he worked for Lockheed and later worked as a pipeline inspector. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Everett Johnson and Whitlaw Dent Johnson, Jr.

Erby was a unique man. It has been said that there was never a dull or boring moment around him. He was a man with a large personality and lived his life to the beat of his own drum. Erby loved Mountain City and Johnson County. He owned two airplanes and enjoyed flying over the beautiful mountains. He was a member of First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Brenda Naldrett Johnson, a son, Gary Lee Johnson and wife Dana, sisters Evelyn Gentry and husband Thurman, Lois Lovell and husband Frank, and Francis Russell, a brother Joseph Park Johnson and wife Mary, grandchildren Celise Nicole Johnson, John Wesley Johnson, Jackson Lee Johnson, and Robert Dent Johnson, great-grandchildren Madison Michelle Johnson, Harper Nash Willis, and Jackson Lee Johnson, II., along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 PM at Mountain City Funeral on Wednesday, March 29, 2017. A memorial service will follow at 7:00 with Pastor Dwayne Dickson officiating. A service presenting full military honors will follow the memorial service.

Billy Gene "Buddy" Slemp, Sr., of Lexington, NC passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. He was born on October 1, 1939 to the late McDonald Slemp and Ruby Perkins Slemp. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Cole Slemp, and a sister, Linda Rupard.

Buddy was a sweet and loving man. He retired as a truck driver after driving for 47 years.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Davis Slemp; sons: Billy Gene Slemp, Jr. of Bolt, West Virginia and Carl Franklin Slemp of Lexington, NC; sisters: Donna West and husband Mike, Karen Icenhour and husband Tom; brother, Jack Slemp and wife Olive; fifteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm, Friday, April 21, 2017 from the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Mac Arnold officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow in the Hodge Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Danny Grindstaff, Dennis Tester, Steve Hodge, Jimmy Tester, Jack Arnold, Johnny Arnold and Keith Main. MOUNTAIN CITY - Richard Michael 'Mike' 'Club" Blevins, age 67, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

He was born on September 7, 1949 to Earlene Cress Blevins and the late Dick Blevins. In addition to his father, Mike was preceded in death by a brother, David Edward Blevins.

Mike was a contractor for many years and in 1978 he opened his own restaurant in Mountain City, Mike's Bar-B-Que. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed his guns and reloading his own ammunition.

In addition to his mother, Earlene; Mike is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Sarah Blevins of Leland, NC; special friend like a son, Robbie Bradley of Elizabethton, TN, Boy Dog, two nieces, Nikki Blevins Sawyers and Brandy Blevins Childester, mother of his son, Beverly Blevins of Lottsburg, VA; and many, many special friends.
