    JOHNSON CITY - Herbert H. Matherly, 88, of Johnson City, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2017. He was born in Butler, Tennessee, and grew up in Carter County. He was the son of George Dewey Matherly and Ruth Esther Long. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Herbert Matherly, Jr., in December 2016.

    In 1949 he started working for Pet Dairy. In 1950 he organized the Pet Dairy Credit Union, starting with a $5 deposit, which grew into a multi-million dollar credit union at the time of his retirement in 1994. His philosophy was people helping people. He dedicated his life to the prosperity of his credit union members and making a difference in the quality of countless people's lives.

    For many years he was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon and Sunday School class president.

    He was a devoted family man. He leaves behind his loving wife, Jean, of 68 years; two daughters, Jennifer Lynn of Kingsport and Laura Lee of United Arab Emirates; and two granddaughters, Angela and Emily.

    Graveside services will be held at a later date.

    Mrs. White was born Friday, May 26, 1933 at Cobb's Creek in Old Butler to the late William Bill & Callie Caldonia Matherly White. She was the last member of her family. Jewel Dean attended Cobb's Creek School. She was a member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church since age 12. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years: Ray E. Vines who passed away November 3, 1987 and a son Steve "Beater" Vines on October 29, 1996.

    Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter: Betty Vines McNeil and a son-in-law that she loved as her own son, Steve. A Son: Ray "June" Vines of Hampton.     A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late James Blaine & Winnie Loretta Wagner Matherly. Ted served in the United States Air Force. He attended Watauga Academy and graduate from Johnson County High School. He also attended the University of Tennessee. He retired as Postmaster from the Butler Post Office after 27 years of service. Ted was a member of Roan Creek Masonic Lodge # 679, was one of the original members of the Butler Fire Department, a charter member of the Butler Puritan Club and was a member and deacon of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Raquel Patria (Pat) Ramon Matherly who died May 11, 2005 and by three sisters and three brothers. Ted loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was also an Atlanta Brave Fan.

    Survivors include Two Daughters: Teresa Burchfield & husband Bob, Covington, Georgia and Amy Ogle & husband Darrell, Rutledge, Tennessee. One Son: Steven Matherly and wife Michele, Butler. Six Grandchildren, Seven Great Grandchildren, several nieces & nephews.

    Born in Butler, TN, he was the son of the late Edward and Georgia Cress Matherly.

    He was a member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Matherly proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

    He was the founder of Clutch and Brake Supply Company in Johnson City and later of Clutch and Brake of Asheville. He retired in 2004 when he sold the business.

    Mr. Matherly was a graduate of Watauga Academy in Butler and Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He was a past member of the Civitan Club, member of Automotive Parts Rebuilders Association and active supporter.

    He had a true passion for the Haven of Mercy, where he served on the board of directors.

    Known as a kind, honest, caring, and giving man, he always put others first. He displayed all of the "fruits of the spirit," particularly patience and kindness. He had a great love for his family and spoiled his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his work, inventing things, rock collecting, making candles and gardening.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Lee Matherly, Esther Wagner; and brother, Guy Matherly.

    He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Lydia Sluder Matherly, of Johnson City; daughters, Mary Gail Matherly Keown (Larry), of Calhoun, GA, and Melissa Matherly Clemons (Phil), of Kingsport; son, Roger Matherly (Mary June), of Asheville, NC; sisters, Mildred Cole, of Butler, Virginia Davis (Junior), of Butler, Marge Bailey, of Greensboro, NC, Marie Rankins Williams, of Mountain City, and Sue Pierce, of Mountain City; brother, Ebb Matherly (Marie), of Butler, and Paul Matherly (Alfreda), of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Josh Keown, of Roanoke, VA, and Lindsey Keown, of Athens, GA; Katherine Clemons, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Suzanne Clemons, of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

    The family would like to extend a special thank you to the VA Home Based Primary Care, Home Instead Senior Care of Jonesborough and caregivers, Lindsey, Kathy and Wendy.

    BUTLER - Mildred Lily (Matherly) Cole, 98, of Butler, TN was called home to be with the Lord and her devoted husband of 52 years, Everett C. "Pete" Cole and her precious daughter, Betty Sue Matherly unexpectedly on Saturday, December 7, 2019.

    She was able to be in her home until the end which meant the world to her. Mildred was born on November 25, 1921 in Butler to the late Edward and Georgia Matherly. In addition to her husband, daughter and parents she was preceded in death by her Brothers, Guy Matherly, Murel Matherly & Elbert Matherly and sisters Bonalee Matherly, Esther Wagner & Margie Bailey. She was also preceded in death by a wonderful son-in-law, Wendell Francis and was the last living matriarch to the Cole family; which she loved and treasured dearly.

    Until they meet again, she leaves behind her cherished daughter Carolyn Marie Francis of Florida and her devoted caregiver to the end, her son, Carl Everett Cole of Butler; Grandchildren Amy Jones (Mitch), Paul Francis (Kristina), Angela Matherly, Guy Matherly (Missy), Erica Southerland (Justin), Ashley Cole and Brittany Maness (Dwight). Great-Grandchildren left to cherish many memories: Sarah Peterson, Matthew Matherly (Paige), Morgan Wright, Kirsten Matherly, Kalie Matherly, Xavier Longoria, Madison Matherly, Leah Matherly, Liam Matherly, Alyssa Cain and Michael Southerland. Brother Paul Matherly (Elfreda) and sisters, Virginia Davis, Marie Williams & Sue Pierce and sister-in-law Marie Matherly; many nieces and nephews.

    Mildred loved sewing and spent several years working in a drycleaner as a seamstress. She was a passionate quilter creating, giving and sharing many with her children, grandchildren, and many others throughout her life. She spent many years traveling across the country with her husband as he worked, moving her family many times on a moments' notice. In her younger years she loved gardening and canning. She and her husband hunted and cooked for many hunters in North Carolina after retirement. She loved the Lord and never missed an opportunity to tell others about Jesus. She read through her Bible yearly and loved many friends that she attended church with both at Cobbs Creek Baptist in Butler and Bethany Baptist Church, Mountain City, where she was a member.

    Mildred loved her family and had a special love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also had several special caregivers who helped to keep her wish of staying in the home to the end possible: Gloria Hathorn, Gloria Leveillee, Beverly Lowe, Luvena Erwin and Tom Erwin.

    The family will receive family and friends at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Memorial Funeral Home in Elizabethton, TN with the service to follow at 1:00 p.m. Pastors Bryan Sheehan, her nephew, and Doug Hinshaw, a long time friend will be officiating. A graveside service and burial will follow the service at Butler Cemetery in Butler, TN.     He was born in Johnson County, Tennessee, on April 22, 1931, to the late Edward Harrison and Georgia Cress Matherly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a loving son, David Edward Matherly, two brothers, Guy Matherly and Merle Matherly; and Two Sisters: Bona Lee Matherly and Esther Matherly Wagner.
    Mr. Matherly was a member and Deacon of Little Milligan Baptist Church. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He had worked at the Bemberg Corporation, Fish Springs Marina and retired as a Construction Worker.
    Survivors include his wife of 59 years: Gladys Marie Campbell Matherly. One Son and daughter-in-law: Gregory Charles & Kathy Matherly of Florida.     Mr. Carl Shelton Matherly, Sr., beloved husband and loving father, left his earthly family on Sunday, April 22, 2012.

    Born in Old Butler, TN on April 1, 1922, he was a graduate of Watauga Academy, Milligan College and East Tennessee State University.

    He served in the Army during World War II, where he met the love of his life, Isabel Portrum. He and Isabel enjoyed 62 years of marriage, raising a family and calling Kingsport their home. Together, they were faithful servants of God as members of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church.

    Carl began and ended his career with the Sullivan County School System. He was a teacher, coach and administrator for 39 years, first at Lynn View High School then retiring as principal from Sullivan South High School. Many benefited from his devotion to the youth of his community. He was proud to contribute to the success of his students and athletes.

    To honor his years of dedication at South High School, the football stadium was named in his honor. Carl was dedicated to his community, serving with many groups and organizations. His role with the TSSAA was his most notable. Carl was first elected to the TSSAA Board of Control in 1965. In 1978 he was elected Chairman, a role he served for 9 years. Carl also served on the Executive Board of the National Federation — a role no other Tennessean had filled. He was honored to be elected into both the Northeast Tennessee Hall of Fame and the TSSAA Hall of Fame.

    Carl was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Verdie Matherly, his brothers Park Matherly and Freddie Matherly, his sisters Mary Martherly Laws, Florence Matherly Trivette and his beloved wife of 62 years, Isabel Portrum Matherly. He is survived by his sister Doris Matherly Snyder, a daughter, Mrs. Martha Parham and husband Tom, a son, Carl S. Matherly Jr, and wife Susan, and two grandsons Joshua Park Matherly and Tyler McKinley Matherly each of whom, have comforted and cared for him in the years since Isabel's passing. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who cherished their "Uncle Charlie."

    The family will receive friends at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church from 5-7:00 pm Tuesday, April 24, 2012. Dr. Dan Clark will officiate a service immediately following the visitation.

    A private burial will be held for Mrs. Trivette at Washington County Memory Gardens, February 23rd.

    Virginia Dare Hamilton Nave, 82, of Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2019, after an extended illness.
    A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Robert R. and Anna E. Reed Hamilton. She had lived most of her life in Carter County.
    Virginia was a former employee of the Housecleaning Department of Carter County Memorial Hospital and retired due to disability from North American Rayon Corporation. She was an active member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church and the WMU of the church. She was also a member of the Auxiliary D.A.V.A. Chapter 17.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sons, Stephen K. Nave, Michael Nave and Rev. Jeff Nave; her sisters, Ruby Watts, Anna Bell Hamm, Mary Watts, Edith Hamilton, Ossie Hurley and Beulah Caldwell; her brothers, John Hamilton, Fred Hamilton and Robert Hamilton; her grandson, Michael Lee Nave; and also her special friend and sister-in-law, Mary Hamilton.
    Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Albert V. Nave; a daughter, Robin Nave Markland; a sister, Nettie Clark; a brother, Samuel Hamilton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Annetta Nave and Lesia Nave Goodman; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Dr. William Duncan and Rev. Willie Lunsford officiating. Music will be provided by David Long and the Caldwell Springs Baptist Church Choir. Graveside services and interment will follow in the Caldwell Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Eddie Nave, Mike Nidiffer, Bob Carr, Jeff Pierce, Stephen Lewis, Dallas Pierce, Dexter Lunceford and Dean Robinson.     Mr. Jimmy Dale Lipford, 80, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on February 28, 2015 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital after an extended illness.

    Mr. Lipford was born in Butler, TN on October 27, 1934. He lived most of his life in Carter County. Most will remember his ownership of several service stations and his many friends associated with drag racing and participation in Rod Runs. He and his brother Howard built most of the homes in Crowe Bottom in the Valley Forge Community. He loved the Tennessee Vols and spending time with his grandchildren. He attended First Freewill Baptist Church.

    In addition to his parents (Oscar and Lucy Matherly Lipford), he was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, (Patricia Rose Lipford), and his brothers, (Howard and Ray).

    Survivors include his daughters, Lisa Pilkington (and husband, John) and Stephanie Nave (and her husband, Kenneth), and his sister, Charlotte Williams, a niece, (Betty Jo Greene), and his grandchildren, who were the loves of his life, (Matt and Conner Nave). Several other nieces and nephews also survive.

    A visitation period will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. A service to honor the life of Mr. Lipford will be conducted at 7:00 PM following the visitation on Tuesday. Rev. Nathan Jennings and Rev. Jack Lloyd will officiate and music will be provided by Grady and Alicia Holder.

    The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Johnny Honeycutt, Danny Williams, Dennis Berry, Doug Deloach, Tony Greene, Joe Hyder, and Edwin Alexander. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Lipford, Steve Sorrell, Dr. David Fenner, and Bob Strickland.

He attended Elizabethton City schools, East Tennessee State University, University of Tennessee at Knoxville earning a BS in Mechanical Engineering, and University of Central Florida in Orlando where he was working on a MS in Computer Science Engineering. Norman retired from Martin Marietta (now Lockheed Martin).

    He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Clara; daughters Vickie Phelps, Elaine Smith, and Jeanne Smith; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; his siblings James L. Smith Jr. of Memphis, David S. Smith of Knoxville, and Earnestine Baker of Johnson City. He was preceded in death by parents, James Lamar Smith and Rowena Matherly Smith and infant brother David Grant Smith.

    JOHNSON CITY - Ernestine S. Baker, age 89, of Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be with her Lord on Monday, March 6, 2023 surrounded by her family. Ernestine was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late James Lamar Smith and Rowena (Matherly) Smith. Ernestine was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty-six years, James Lee Baker, in November 2022; her son, Richard Baker; two brothers, Norman (Clara) Smith and J.L. (Josephine) Smith; an infant brother, James David Smith; and a special cousin, Billie Greene.

    Ernestine was a loving and kind lady and above everything else she loved her Lord and her family. She was a graduate of Draughon’s Business College and worked as a secretary at Home Federal Bank before becoming a full-time wife and mother. She retired from United Way. She was a devoted member of Grace Baptist Church of Elizabethton, Pinecrest Baptist Church of Johnson City and most recently Grace Baptist Church of Johnson City. Ernestine was a talented seamstress and also enjoyed singing and camping. Although her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled nor forgotten, we find comfort that she is now at home with the Lord and reunited with Jim.

    Those left to cherish and remember her memory include her daughter, Lisa Sisk and husband Wesley; four granddaughters, Ashley (Josh) Williams, Hayley (Britt) Reece, Alesha Sisk, and Kaylee Baker; two grandsons, Colby Baker and Chance (Emily) Baker; her great grandsons, Dylan, Roland, Bodhi and Judah Williams and Holston Reece; her daughter-in-law, Kyra Baker and family; one brother, David Samuel (Lala) Smith; and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

    A celebration of Ernestine’s life will be conducted at 3:30 PM on Sunday, March 12, 2023 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Reverend Darryl Blair and Reverend Michael Heath officiating. The family will receive friends and family between the hours of 2:00 PM until the service hour at 3:30 PM on Sunday. Friends and family may also visit the residence at other times.

    Ernestine will be laid to rest with her beloved husband at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 13, 2023 at Mountain Home National Cemetery (Historic Section). Active pallbearers will be Wesley Sisk, Joshua Williams, Britt Reece and Jan Laughrun.

    Billie Naomi Greene, 89, of Lake City, Fla., went to her Heavenly home on April 1, 2022, at Suwannee Valley Care Center. She was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., on December 28, 1932, to the late Vernon Riddle Cordell and Hazel Opal Matherly.
    Billie grew up in a small east Tennessee community and graduated from Elizabethton High School. She was a beautiful woman from the inside out who accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in her teens and lived a life that reflected her deep conviction to Him. She married the love of her life, Mack Greene, in June of 1952. They enjoyed an extraordinary life together traveling extensively with the National Park Service where Mack was employed many years. Perhaps her most incredible memory was having tea with Eleanor Roosevelt when they lived in Hyde Park, N.Y., but that’s hard to say as there were countless memories she shared throughout her sweet life.
    Billie was a talented seamstress, and her handiwork was flawless. She was most passionate about her family; being a devoted wife and loving mother to her two children. She and Mack were married 35 years when he passed at the age of 62. Billie remained healthy and independent until her last days. She was a member of Elim Baptist Church in Ft. White and Fort White United Methodist Church. She thoroughly enjoyed attending church services to praise, worship, be filled and grow, along with spending precious time fellowshipping with her church family. Billie loved unconditionally and her legacy is that she was genuinely loved by everyone that knew her. Well done, faithful servant.
    Billie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mack C. Greene Jr.; parents, Vernon “Pat” Cordell and Hazel MacLaren; her grandparents; and all her aunts and uncles.
    Billie is survived by her loving children, Roger B. (Sherry) Greene Sr. of Virginia, and Nancy L. (Bob) Turner of Lake City, Fla.; brother, Dr. Jack (Jan) Cordell of North Carolina; grandchildren, Randi (Dusty) Hewit, Naomi (Kevin) Newman, Vickie Pridemore, R.     A Celebration of Billie’s Life will be held on Friday, April 15, at 2 p.m. at Fort White United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Brecheen officiating. A graveside service will be held at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City, Tenn., where she will be interred with her husband, Mack.
