She was the daughter of the late W.L. and Elva Allen Nave. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph J. Baird and one brother, Carson R. Nave.

Mrs. Baird was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church where she and her husband were long-time treasurers of the church.

Mrs. Baird was an avid rose gardener and a member of the Watauga Valley Rose Society.

The funeral service was conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, August 19, 2004, in the Sunrise Chapel, Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City.

The committal and burial service were held at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Friday, August 20, 2004 at 10 a.m.

Maudene married Ralph James Baird on 13 Jun 1931 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. Ralph (son of William James Baird and Eunice Addie Byers) was born on 24 Jan 1908 in , Watauga County, North Carolina, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

JOHNSON CITY - Dorothy Baird Carpenter of Johnson City, died Friday morning, September 16, 2016, at Asbury Place, Kingsport. She was born in Elizabethton, TN on April 30, 1932 and was the daughter of the late Ralph and Maudene Nave Baird. She grew up in the Central Community and graduated from Happy Valley High School in 1950.

After graduating from East Tennessee State College, she began her career in education as a teacher/librarian at Washington College Academy. She earned a Masters Degree from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University and became a librarian at Lees McRae College and later King College. On a federally funded fellowship, she did post-graduate work at the University of Minnesota. She became a library educator at Appalachian State University. After 19 years, she retired from ETSU as an associate professor.

Mrs. Carpenter was active in the library education association until her retirement. She was a member of the Johnson City Monday Club and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Clayton L. Carpenter, in 2001; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and James P. Hayes, Jr.; and niece, Cheryl L. Hayes.

Dorothy is survived by her stepdaughter, LTC. Patricia Schiefer, USAFR (ret) of San Antonio, TX; grandson, Dr. Matthew A. Schiefer and wife, Dr. Marjorie Montanez of Cleveland, Ohio; niece Bobbie Phillips and husband, Dennis of Kingsport; nephew, James (Jay) Hayes of Kingsport; grand-nephew, James Phillips and wife, Crystal of Kingsport; and grand-nephew, Evan Hayes of Kingsport.

At the request of the deceased there will not be a funeral or memorial service. Graveside services will be conducted on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 9:00 am at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Paul Helphinstine officiating.

Dorothy married Dr. Clayton Lee Carpenter about 1951. Clayton was born on 31 Jan 1920 in Buffalo County, , , Nebraska; died on 27 Dec 2001 in Washintgon County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Happy Valley Memorial Park, , Carter County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
