    Murel Ed Matherly, 93, of Johnson City, passed away on Monday, June 22, 2009.

    Born in Butler, TN, he was the son of the late Edward and Georgia Cress Matherly.

    He was a member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Matherly proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

    He was the founder of Clutch and Brake Supply Company in Johnson City and later of Clutch and Brake of Asheville. He retired in 2004 when he sold the business.

    Mr. Matherly was a graduate of Watauga Academy in Butler and Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He was a past member of the Civitan Club, member of Automotive Parts Rebuilders Association and active supporter.

    He had a true passion for the Haven of Mercy, where he served on the board of directors.

    Known as a kind, honest, caring, and giving man, he always put others first. He displayed all of the "fruits of the spirit," particularly patience and kindness. He had a great love for his family and spoiled his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his work, inventing things, rock collecting, making candles and gardening.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Lee Matherly, Esther Wagner; and brother, Guy Matherly.

    He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Lydia Sluder Matherly, of Johnson City; daughters, Mary Gail Matherly Keown (Larry), of Calhoun, GA, and Melissa Matherly Clemons (Phil), of Kingsport; son, Roger Matherly (Mary June), of Asheville, NC; sisters, Mildred Cole, of Butler, Virginia Davis (Junior), of Butler, Marge Bailey, of Greensboro, NC, Marie Rankins Williams, of Mountain City, and Sue Pierce, of Mountain City; brother, Ebb Matherly (Marie), of Butler, and Paul Matherly (Alfreda), of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Josh Keown, of Roanoke, VA, and Lindsey Keown, of Athens, GA; Katherine Clemons, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Suzanne Clemons, of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

    The family would like to extend a special thank you to the VA Home Based Primary Care, Home Instead Senior Care of Jonesborough and caregivers, Lindsey, Kathy and Wendy.

    A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday at 7:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral Services with Pastor Steve Whitt and Rev. Michael Dickerson officiating. Music will be provided by Melissa Clemons and Anthony Harris.

    The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM prior to the service.

    A graveside service will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Bill Smith, Jim Williams, Bill Sluder, Jimmie Hubbard, Josh Keown, Tim Stone, Don Rankin. Honorary pallbearers will be Lynn Greever, Clifford Gilbert, Jim Burleson, Doyle Cloyd, J.D. Hoover, John Tipton, Cecil Scalf, Jeff Blackburn and Wylie Milhorn. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 AM for procession to the cemetery.

    Murel married Mary Lydia Sluder about 1946. Mary (daughter of David Lee Sluder and Mary Cardwell) was born about 1925 in , Avery County, North Carolina, ; died on 23 Apr 2017 in Washintgon County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Happy Valley Memorial Park, , Carter County, Tennessee.     BUTLER - Mildred Lily (Matherly) Cole, 98, of Butler, TN was called home to be with the Lord and her devoted husband of 52 years, Everett C. "Pete" Cole and her precious daughter, Betty Sue Matherly unexpectedly on Saturday, December 7, 2019.

    She was able to be in her home until the end which meant the world to her. Mildred was born on November 25, 1921 in Butler to the late Edward and Georgia Matherly. In addition to her husband, daughter and parents she was preceded in death by her Brothers, Guy Matherly, Murel Matherly & Elbert Matherly and sisters Bonalee Matherly, Esther Wagner & Margie Bailey. She was also preceded in death by a wonderful son-in-law, Wendell Francis and was the last living matriarch to the Cole family; which she loved and treasured dearly.

    Until they meet again, she leaves behind her cherished daughter Carolyn Marie Francis of Florida and her devoted caregiver to the end, her son, Carl Everett Cole of Butler; Grandchildren Amy Jones (Mitch), Paul Francis (Kristina), Angela Matherly, Guy Matherly (Missy), Erica Southerland (Justin), Ashley Cole and Brittany Maness (Dwight). Great-Grandchildren left to cherish many memories: Sarah Peterson, Matthew Matherly (Paige), Morgan Wright, Kirsten Matherly, Kalie Matherly, Xavier Longoria, Madison Matherly, Leah Matherly, Liam Matherly, Alyssa Cain and Michael Southerland. Brother Paul Matherly (Elfreda) and sisters, Virginia Davis, Marie Williams & Sue Pierce and sister-in-law Marie Matherly; many nieces and nephews.

    Mildred loved sewing and spent several years working in a drycleaner as a seamstress. She was a passionate quilter creating, giving and sharing many with her children, grandchildren, and many others throughout her life. She spent many years traveling across the country with her husband as he worked, moving her family many times on a moments' notice. In her younger years she loved gardening and canning. She and her husband hunted and cooked for many hunters in North Carolina after retirement. She loved the Lord and never missed an opportunity to tell others about Jesus. She read through her Bible yearly and loved many friends that she attended church with both at Cobbs Creek Baptist in Butler and Bethany Baptist Church, Mountain City, where she was a member.

    Mildred loved her family and had a special love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also had several special caregivers who helped to keep her wish of staying in the home to the end possible: Gloria Hathorn, Gloria Leveillee, Beverly Lowe, Luvena Erwin and Tom Erwin.

    The family will receive family and friends at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Memorial Funeral Home in Elizabethton, TN with the service to follow at 1:00 p.m. Pastors Bryan Sheehan, her nephew, and Doug Hinshaw, a long time friend will be officiating. A graveside service and burial will follow the service at Butler Cemetery in Butler, TN. Pallbearers will be Justin Southerland, Dwight Maness, Mitch Jones, Guy Matherly, Greg Matherly, Craig Davis, Matthew Matherly and Bryan Sheehan.

    Charles Elbert "Ebb" Matherly, 82, of Butler, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, October 13, 2013 from his residence.
    He was born in Johnson County, Tennessee, on April 22, 1931, to the late Edward Harrison and Georgia Cress Matherly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a loving son, David Edward Matherly, two brothers, Guy Matherly and Merle Matherly; and Two Sisters: Bona Lee Matherly and Esther Matherly Wagner.
    Mr. Matherly was a member and Deacon of Little Milligan Baptist Church. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He had worked at the Bemberg Corporation, Fish Springs Marina and retired as a Construction Worker.
    Survivors include his wife of 59 years: Gladys Marie Campbell Matherly. One Son and daughter-in-law: Gregory Charles & Kathy Matherly of Florida. Three Daughters & Sons-in-Law: Tammy and Danny Kinser, Butler, Melanie & Andy Reed, Franklin, Tennessee, Esther & John Loyd, Butler. Seven Grandchildren: Desirae Matherly, Jamie Matherly, Gregory Matherly, Jr., John-David Loyd, Jordan Kinser, Carter Reed and Molly Reed: One Great Grandson: Sullivan Martin (Eric Martin, Father); One Brother and Sister-in-Law: Paul & Elfreida Matherly. Five Sisters: Mildred Cole, Virginia Davis and husband Junior, Margie Bailey, Marie Williams and Sue Pierce. Many loving nieces & nephews.
    Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 pm. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Cecil " Nick" Bradshaw, Rev. Sam Icenhour and Rev. Garry Edwards officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2013 in Butler Memorial Cemetery. Music will be provided by Rev. Ronnie Campbell. Pallbearers will be selected from family members.
