Inez May Gwyn Horney, 82 of Banner Elk, North Carolina passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, at Watauga Medical Center, Boone, NC.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1935 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of Gurney Clayton Gwyn and Flora Day Gwyn.

Inez was a member of Elk Valley Church.

She was preceded in death by her Father: Gurney Clayton Gwyn; Mother: Flora Mae Gwyn; Husband: John Frank Horney; Grandson: Steven Trivette; Granddaughter: Elizabeth Michelle Horney; Brothers: Warren Gwyn, Ernest Gwyn, Beedy Gwyn; Sisters: Dora Moody, Georgia Ward, Bessie Lee, Alice Puckett and Joyce Gwyn.

Inez leaves behind to cherish her memory her: Daughters: Natalie Reeves of Hudson, NC., Linda Carrow of West Jefferson, NC, Lydia (Roger Peterson) Hollifield of Poplar, NC; Sons: Michael (Reba) Horney of Newland, NC; Neil (Beth) Horney of Marion, NC; Glenn (Deanna) Horney of Sugar Mountain, NC; Bill (Renee) Moody of Elkin, NC; 14 grandchildren and 14 (plus one on the way) great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Services for Inez May Gwyn Horney will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018, at Elk Valley Church, with Rev. Luther Carver and Rev. Daniel Crawford officiating.

Interment will be in the Elk Valley Cemetery.

Mrs. Lois Tatum Latcham, age 78, of Newland, NC passed into the arms of Jesus Saturday morning, June 15, 2019. Lois was in her home surrounded by her family when she took her heavenly flight.

She was preceded in death by her Parents: Roy Dale and Martha Shepherd; Sister: Margaret Hodges; and Brothers: Edward and Collis Shepherd.

Survivors include her Daughters: Sharon Kay Banner (husband Mitch) of Linville NC, Sondra Gay Parlier (husband Jeff) of Morganton NC, and Susan Renee Simmons (husband John) of Burnsville NC; Son: James Edward Tatum (wife Becky) of Marion NC; Brother: J.D. Shepherd of Lenoir, NC; eight Grandchildren: Brandon Dean Hodges (Marie), Brandon Parlier, Eric Simmons, Mitchell Simmons, Brooke Peterson, Carter Simmons, Ryan Price (Kayla), Rachel Tatum Creegan (Tyler); and three Great Grandchildren: Lillian Paige Hodges, Haegan and Lawson Price.

Lois loved the lord and her family with all of her heart. She was the rock that everyone leaned on.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 17, in the Emmanuel Baptist Church of which she was a member. Rev. Joe Ingham will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church Monday from 6 p.m. until the service hour. Burial will be Tuesday morning, June 18, in the Gwyn Cemetery.

Scotty Gwyn, 71, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2018, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, N.C.
He was born on January 15, 1947 in Avery County, N.C., a son of the late Joseph Elbert Gwyn and the late Georgia Fox Gwyn.
Scotty was a member of Curtis Creek Freewill Baptist Church and had proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed working with orchids, watching golf, and listening and dancing to country music.
He will always be remembered for his service station in Elk Park, Scotty's. Many a friend will remember passing by and seeing Scotty and some of his buddies sitting on the front talking and catching up. When a child would go into the store, he was known to give them a piece of candy.
Scotty leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Vickie Young Gwyn of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; son, Casey (Virginia) Gwyn of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; daughters, Tricia (Michael) Thompson of Roan Mountain, Tenn., and Ramona (Gary) Warren of Lewisville, N.C.; sister, Virgie (Gary) Guinn of Elk Park, N.C.; and grandchildren, Macie (Blake) Dugger of Butler, Tenn., Thomas Brown, Hunter Warren, John Dula, Caden Gwyn, Colton Gwyn and Carter Gwyn. Scotty also leaves behind a host of many friends.
Services for Scotty Gwyn will be held Monday, May 28, beginning at 6 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. The family will receive friends beginning at 4 p.m. Monday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Family, friends and pallbearers will meet at the Scotty Gwyn Family Cemetery in Roan Mountain at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday for interment.

Reba Puckett South, age 64, of Elk Park passed away on March 23, 2015 at Brian Center of Spruce Pine.

A native of Avery County, she was born April 23, 1950 a daughter of the late William and Alice Gwyn Puckett.

Reba has left to cherish her memory her: husband, Clint South of the home; sons, Brian South and Shawn South both of Elk Park; brother, Lige Puckett and wife Brenda of Elk Park; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Reba Puckett South will be conducted on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 8:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until the service hour. Family, friends and pallbearers will meet on Friday, March 27, 2015 at 11:00 am at the funeral home to go in procession to McGuire Cemetery for interment services.

Kathy Shook, age 57, of Elk Park went home to be with Lord on Friday, Aug. 23, 2019.

A native of Avery County, she was born on March 30, 1962, to Madeline Palmer Sheppard of Newland and the late Preacher Charles Collis Sheppard.

Kathy attended Blevins Creek Church and enjoyed fishing, singing, going on outings with her sisters and spending time with her family.

Along with her father, she was preceded in death by a Brother: Danny Sheppard and a Sister: Linda Sheppard.
