    Mrs. Edith Francis Simerly, of Elizabethton, passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. She was born in Carter County and was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Arnett and Annie Jane "Jennie" Peters Arnett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl "Jay" Simerly, Jr. (March 1999); two sons, Bradley Dale Simerly (April 1957) and Danny Ross Simerly (October 2001); three brothers, John Albert Arnett, Rev. Thomas Arnett and

    Rev. Nathanial "Nat" Arnett; two sisters, Blanche Guinn and Kathryn Holtsclaw.

    Mrs. Simerly retired as a nurse's aide at Ivy Hall Nursing Home and was the last surviving member of her family and the oldest member of Sunrise Free Will Baptist Church in Roan Mountain.

    Survivors include three sons, Rev. Allen Simerly and his wife Judy, Hampton;

    Leroy Simerly and his wife Debra, Hickory, NC; Teddy Simerly and his wife Debra, Hampton; four daughters, Melva Doris King, Sumter, SC; Judy Guinn and her husband Darrell, Elizabethton; Janie Guinn and her husband Harlan, Hampton;

    Jill Stanberry and her husband Roy, Elizabethton; two special daughters-in-law, Janice Simerly, Hampton and Peggy Murphy, Taylorsville, NC; nineteen grandchildren, Billy Jack Estep, Scott Estep, Andrew Estep, Timothy Simerly, Rebecca Blevins, Priscilla Pearce, Tammy Trent, Todd Simerly, Jamie Simerly, Christine Sigmon, Travis Simerly, Jessie Simerly, Danny Ray Simerly, Jennifer Combs, Jill Markland, Toby Guinn, Randy Guinn, Shannon Ford and Amy Whitson; and seventeen great grandchildren. Mrs. Simerly was known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as "Ole-Granny." She is also survived by her special nieces and nephews including, Dorothy Forbes, Myrtle Elliott, Charlene Drown, Thelma Jo Breedlove, Darlene Mynatt, Gail Carroll, Veronia Campbell, Cheryl Moore, Otis and Sandy Guinn, Roy Jack Arnett, Billy Howard, Margaret Simerly and Sarah Carr; special sisters-in-law, Betty Taylor and her husband Norman, Jonesborough, Ruby Sloope and her husband Tony, Taylorsville, NC; Gladys Blevins, Roan Mountain and Billie Birchfield, California; special friends, Sherry Peters, Lynn and Kelly Bowers, Dexter and Mandy Blevins, Pastor Alan King, John Whitson, Richard and Janet Isaacs, Stella Francis, Hazel Francis, Daisie Strasinger and Pauline Hill.

    The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 20th in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Allen Simerly and Rev. Alan King officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm prior to the service in the chapel.

    The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 21st in the John Whitehead Cemetery, Hampton. Active pallbearers will be Mrs. Simerly's grandsons, Billy Jack Estep, Scott Estep, Andrew Estep, Toby Guinn, Randy Guinn, Timothy Simerly, Todd Simerly, Jamie Simerly, Travis Simerly, Jessie Simerly and Danny Simerly. Honorary pallbearers will be Tyrone and Linda Powell, Johnny and Fredia Hill, Bruce Hill, Tim Holtsclaw, Ronnie Holtsclaw, Chris Holtsclaw and Ray Vance. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 10:50 am on Wednesday.

    The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the Carter County Rescue Squad, Sycamore Shoals Hospital Emergency Room and Staff, Dr. Ahmed Khan, Dr. Sheryl Pack, the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital ICU Doctors and Staff, Eric Trivette and the Carter County Sheriff's Department.

    ROAN MOUNTAIN – It is with extreme sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our mother Sarah J. Whitehead, 88, Roan Mountain, who passed away Monday June 1, 2009, in the Roan Highland Nursing Center after an extended illness.

    She was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Jacob and Blanche Arnett Guinn.

    Sarah loved to work in her flowers and vegetable garden. She freely shared her bounty with friends and neighbors and family, whatever their needs may be. She was a member of the Little Mountain Baptist Church.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Whitehead; and a brother, George Guinn.

    Myrtle Marie Guinn Elliott, 92, Roan Mountain, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at the residence of her daughter & son-in-law, Iva Lee & Husband Bruce Dingler, Summerville, South Carolina following an extended illness.

    A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Jacob & Blanche Arnett Guinn. She had lived in South Carolina for the past seven years. She was a homemaker.

    Mrs. Elliott was a member of Morgan Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willard C. Elliott who died June 1, 2008, by one sister, Sarah Whitehead and two brothers: George & Otis Guinn.

    Survivors include her three daughters: Iva Lee Dingler and husband Bruce, Summerville, South Carolina, Bernice Lewis and husband Charlie, Jonesborough and Helen Reed & husband Timothy, Goose Creek, South Carolina. Her Grandchildren; Johnathan Shipley, Kenneth Reed, Kee Reed, Debbie Goins, Linda Rogers, Laura Dingler and Bruce Dingler, Jr.; 10 Great Grandchildren and three Great Great Grandchildren. Her sisters: Wanda Pate, Lee McKinney and Dorothy Forbes. One Brother: Thomas Guinn.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tull Oaks and Rev. Greg Whitehead officiating. Interment will follow in the Captain Nelson Cemetery. Music will be provided by Dale & Denise Cunningham.     JOHNSON CITY - Wanda Mae Guinn Pate, 94, of Johnson City, passed way on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at her residence. She was surrounded by caregivers, friends, and close nephew, Donnie Pate, who will all miss her dearly.

    She was a lifelong resident of Carter County, daughter of the late Jack and Blanche Arnett Guinn.

    Wanda loved life. She enjoyed traveling with her late husband, Bill, making a lifetime of memories across the world. Back home at home she spent time crafting, collecting, and attending service at Grace Gospel Church.

    In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by: husband, Bill J. Pate; brothers, George Guinn, Tommy Guinn, and Otis Guinn; sisters, Dorothy “Dottie” Forbes of Elizabethton, Myrtle Elliot, Sarah Whitehead, and Lee McKinney.

    She is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

    The family would like to thank the caregivers from Visiting Angels for the exceptional care they gave Wanda in their time with her, going above and beyond every day. Special thanks are also extended to Michelle and the rest of the hospice team at Amedysis for their compassion and care.

    The family of Wanda Pate will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM, with a committal afterward at 12:00 PM at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Services will be officiated by Pastor Mike Richards and Chaplain Steven Spell.

    She was born on December 10, 1933, in Carter County, Tenn., a daughter of Jacob Guinn and Blanche Arnett Guinn. Rhoda was a member of the Little Freewill Baptist Church and enjoyed working in her yard and garden. She loved to work on her wood pile.

    She was preceded in death by her Father: Jacob Guinn; Mother: Blanche Guinn; Sisters: Sarah Whitehead, Myrtle Elliott; Brothers: George Guinn and Otis Guinn

    Rhoda leaves behind to cherish her memory her: Husband of 62 years: J.D.McKinney of Elk Park, NC; Children: Jessie McKinney, Jerry McKinney, Kay (Roy) Erwin, Brian (Buffy) McKinney, Regina (Wayne) Erwin and Susie (Josh) Erwin.

    Siblings: Mae Pate, Dorothy Forbes and Tommy Guinn.

    Grandchildren: Aaron Zipp, Matthew McKinney, Renee Havron, Randall Harrald, Jacob Erwin, Derrick McKinney, James McKinney, Marie Erwin, Johnny McKinney, Tommy McKinney, Mary Erwin and Cody McKinney; Eight great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter.

    Services for Rhoda Lea McKinney will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 25, 2018, from the Grandfather Chapel of the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Sheppard officiating. Interment will follow in the Winters Cemetery. The family will receive friends from beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

He was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church and the Daryl White Sunday School Class. He was a member of The Praying Mountain Men.
    Survivors include his wife of 46 years: Sandra Roe Guinn; One Daughter & Son-In-Law: Hope and Greg Hartley, Butler; Four Sisters: Lea McKinney and her husband, J.D., Elk Park, North Carolina, Myrtle Elliott, Summersville, South Carolina, Dorthy Forbes, Elizabethton, and Wanda Mae Pate, Johnson City; One Brother & Sister-in-Law: Tommy & Betty Guinn, Roan Mountain; Several Nieces & Nephews.
    Graveside Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 20, 2014 in the Captain Nelson Cemetery, Ripshin Mountain, with Pastor Nathan Jennings and Pastor Jack Lloyd officiating.
    Interment will follow the service. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Thursday will be: Walter Paul VanHuss, Aubrey Brown, Jeff Hitechew, Randall Hutchins, Jim McKinney and Ray Arnett. Leon was retired from the Carter County School System in the Maintenance Department. He attended the Strength & Everlasting Love Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years Louise Eggers Whitehead who died June 24, 2015 and by a sister: Loretta McKinney. Leon loved his mule.

    Survivors include a sister: Della Whitehead, Roan Mountain. His Nephew: Chris & Shannon Whitehead, Roan Mountain, Blake Whitehead, Roan Mountain, Michael & Raquel McKinney, Piney Flats, Mark & April McKinney, Knoxville. Several great nieces & nephews.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 31, 2016 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Kenneth Baker and Pastor John McCoury officiating. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Delaney Berry officiating.     McKinney was a Carter County native and the daughter of the late Charlie and Sarah Guinn Whitehead. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Roan Mountain. She loved the Lord and had many special friends who previously served with her at Little Mountain Baptist Church of Roan Mountain and at Witt Baptist Church in Morristown.
    Nothing was more important to Mrs. McKinney than her family. She exemplified what it means to be a "Proverbs 31 woman." After marrying her husband Jim and moving to Morristown, her primary job was to be a full-time Mom to her two sons. For many years, she kept busy shuttling the boys to ballgames, bike races, 4-H fairs, clogging shows, karate lessons, and anything else that interested her sons at the time, while always doing her best to make sure that Jim came home to a clean house at night with supper on the table.
    When she wasn't busy with the boys, she worked at a variety of jobs in manufacturing, marketing, and sales. She and Jim moved back to Roan Mountain upon their retirement. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and especially enjoyed making treats for them.
    Survivors include her husband, Jimmy McKinney, Roan Mountain; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Raquel McKinney, Piney Flats; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and April McKinney, Knoxville; five young grandchildren, Hunter, Lilly Kate, Rachael, Maggie, and Isla; a brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Louise Whitehead, Roan Mountain; a sister, Della Whitehead, Roan Mountain; a nephew, Chris Whitehead and wife Shannon Whitehead, Roan Mountain; and a niece, Laura Gorney and husband Charlie Gorney, Chesapeake, VA. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, grand nieces, and grand nephews.
    Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in the First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain with the Rev. Garry Edwards and Rev. Chris Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in the Calhoun-McKinney Cemetery. Music will be provided by Rev. Chris Hughes and Mrs JoNell Young, Organist. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the church at 12:50 p.m. Wednesday will be: Mike Blevins, Todd Markland, Johnny Markland, Larry Shell, Glen "Sonny" Burleson and Lynn Ellis.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donors favorite Charity. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain.
