    DEATH TAKES ELMER WHITE
    Elmer White, 26, who was injured August 25 in an automobile accident near Butler, died in a local hospital Tuesday afternoon as the result of the injuries. White who was married, suffered tetanus, or lockjaw.
    He resided on the Watauga river, rural route one, and was a member of the Stoney Creek Baptist Church.
    Funeral services were conducted from the Dungan Chapel this afternoon at two o'clock, with the Rev. E. R. Kilgore officiating. Burial was made in the Ensor Cemetery. During the earlier part of his life, he lived eight years at the R. M. Ensor home.
    Survivors are his widow, and one son, Earl White; father, Ben White; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Bowling and Miss Helen White; four brothers, J. N., Paul, Georgia[sic], and Sef White.
    Active pall bearers: Noland Grindstaff, Wilburn Dykes, Palmer Aldrich, Robert Grindstaff, George Ensor, and Charles Ensor. Flower bearers: Miss Ruth Bishop, Mrs. Vera Bowers, Miss Gussie Taylor, Miss Bethel Grindstaff, Mrs. Bula Myers, Miss Fay Taylor, Mrs. Bessie Williams, Miss Hazel Davis, Miss Bertha Pierce, and Miss Hazel Dykes.

    GEORGE WHITE
    George White, three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben White, died this morning at his home on the Johnson City highway.
    Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at three o'clock with the Rev. Huston Blevins officiating. Interment was in the Taylor Cemetery.
    Survivors of the child are the parents; one brother, Tom White; two sisters, May and Helen White; three half-sisters, Jean, Eula and Charlotte White; and three half-brothers, James, Pal and Seth White.

    ELIZABETHTON - Larry Glenn White, 75, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, October 15, 2017 in the Community Living Center, James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Seth G. & Clara Ina Sheffield White. Larry was a 1960 graduate of Unaka High School. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era. Larry was an educator and teacher for 31 years. He received his degree in Social Studies & Education from West Texas State, Canyon, Texas and his Master Degree in Administration at East Tennessee State University. He began his career of teaching at Dimmitt High School, Dimmitt, Texas, then to Madison County High School, Madison, Virginia where he was a teacher and basketball coach, then to Elizabethton High School where he taught history and was Head Basketball Coach for several years, he also served as Principal at TA Dugger Junior High School, Elizabethton, his last school was Boones Creek Middle School where he was Principal. Larry was a former member of the Elizabethton Civitan Club. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church but in recent years he had been attending Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years: Wynell Barnes White who died August 6, 2006.

    Survivors include his children: Marcie Strong & husband Dwayne, Ruckersville, Virginia and Lance White & wife Mary Beth, Murfreesboro, Tenn... Four Grandchildren: Sierra & Mackenzie Strong and Emma Grace & Ian White. His brothers: Gary White & wife Sandy and Lanny White & wife Tootie White, two nieces & two nephews.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Roger Hayley officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 18, 2017 in the Caldwell Springs Cemetery. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday will be: Jeff White, Roman White, Luke White, Billy Murphy, Tom Holly, Danny Coombs and Tommy Coombs. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Eddie & Anne Dean & Family, Unaka High School Class of 1960, his former basketball players at Madison County High School and Elizabethton High School, Jeff Early, Jack Berry, David Crist, Rick Spagone, Micky Lantz, Paul & Julie Strong, Bill Byrd, David Bush, his church families of Oak Street Baptist Church & Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church.

    Gary Ford White, 76, Elizabethton, born February 22, 1943, passed away after a brief illness at Johnson City Medical Center on Sunday, May 19, 2019.
    Gary was employed at North American Rayon, and retired in 2005 from ETSU College of Medicine. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Seth G. and Clara Ina Sheffield White. Gary was a 1961 graduate of Unaka High School.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Glen White, and sister-in-law, Wynell White.
    Survivors include his wife, Sandra Ashworth White; children, Jeff White and wife Bonnie, Elizabethton, Tenn., and Julie Murphy and husband Billy, Johnson City, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Luke, Katie, Michaela, Bella and Maggie White and Meghan and Padraig Murphy; his brother, Lanny White and wife Tootie White; two brothers-in-law, Richard Ashworth and David Ashworth; nephews, Roman White and Lance White; nieces, Marcie Strong and Mandy Holly; several cherished cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews; and his 'special son,' Kevin "Snake" Lewis.
    Gary was a member of West Side Christian Church in Elizabethton, Tenn.
    Gary had several hobbies and interests with many great friends gained along the way. Gary was involved in several clubs including: The East Tennessee Antique Engine Club, The 'Barn Buddies,' Elizabethton Saturday Night Car Show Buddies, Unaka High School Class of 1961, Don Hughes Garage in Roan Mountain (Lewis, Bob and Don) and the Easy Auto Board of Directors.
    The family would like to thank the staff of Sycamore Shoals Hospital and Johnson City Medical Center ICU for their compassionate care during his brief illness. A special thanks to Dr. Steven Smith and Dr. Jim Davenport, who cared for Gary for many years.

    Billy Joe Bowling, 82, of Indianapolis, Ind., formerly of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2016, from a lengthy illness. Joe was the son of the late Herman and Mary Bowling. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Bowling, and a brother, Sonny Bowling.
    Joe attended Englewood Christian Church. He retired from the Elizabethton Star Newspaper where he served many years as the sports editor.
    In addition to being sports editor, Joe had served as a newspaper carrier, a photographer, reporter, and a brief stint from 1979 to 1982 as editor of the Elizabethton Star. He was well-known in the community, having served as Director of the Carter County Boys Club and as a director of the Elizabethton Housing Authority board. He was an avid Elizabethton Cyclones fan. Joe graduated from Elizabethton High School, where he played football.
    In 2012 he was named to the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame for his 40-years plus as a sports writer.
    He was also a supporter of the Elizabethton Parks and Rec boxing program during years past. Joe coached many ball teams from Little League to Boys Club teams.
    Joe is survived by three sons, Mike Bowling and wife Lisa of Indianapolis, Mark Bowling and wife Christine of Kingsport, and Matt Bowling and wife Sarah of Johnson City; seven grandchildren, Joe Bowling and wife Mary, Josh Bowling and wife Amanda, Jake Bowling and wife Kendra, and Jordan Bowling, all of Indianapolis, Chris Bowling and wife Krissy of Elizabethton, Craig Bowling of Elizabethton and Zoe Bowling of Kingsport. He is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Larry Bowling and Bob Bowling, and two sisters, Kathy Smith and Brenda Hawks, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
    His family will gather in Indianapolis to celebrate his life and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Tennessee for family and friends

    Brenda Gail Bowling Hawks, 67, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, following an extended illness. Brenda was born in Elizabethton to the late Herman C. Bowling and Mary Evelyn White Bowling. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Sonny Bowling and Joe Bowling.
    Brenda was a homemaker and a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church, although she attended Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church. She loved her kindle, watching MASH, Andy Griffith, Gunsmoke, the Game Show Network and most of all she loved her grandchildren.
    Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 43 years, Albert Daniel Hawks Jr., of the home; two daughters, Michelle Bailey and husband Matthew of Greeneville and Beth Wheeler and husband Matthew of Elizabethton; one son, Albert Daniel Hawks III of Elizabethton; two grandsons, Tyler Stansberry and Alex Wheeler; two granddaughters, Sierra Bailey and Savana Bailey; one sister, Kathy Ann Bowling-Smith of Elizabethton; and two brothers, Bobby Gene Bowling and Larry Wayne Bowling, both of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
    A service to celebrate and honor the life of Brenda Gail Bowling Hawks will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Shane Waters and Rev. Steve Burleson officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service, or at the residence at other times. The graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Tyler Stansberry, Alex Wheeler, Matt Bailey, Matt Wheeler, Chris Smith, Michael Smith and Kevin Bowling. Honorary pallbearers will be Albert Daniel Hawks III and Hunter Smith. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton at 9:15 a.m. Thursday to go in procession. The family would like to express a special thanks to the ICU Unit of Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Joy, Tammy, Lori, Heather, Jeremy and Jo for the loving care given to Brenda during her stay at the hospital.

    Larry “Bobo” Bowling went home to be in the presence of his Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at his residence at the age of 79. Larry was a lifelong resident of Elizabethton and was born December 9, 1942 to the late Herman C. Bowling and Mary White Bowling. In addition to his parents, Larry has been reunited with his loving wife, Sherry Lou Smith Bowling, who departed this life on September 10, 2013; three brothers, Joe Bowling, Bob Bowling and Sonny Bowling; and one sister, Brenda Hawks.
    Larry attended Elizabethton High School, during which time he was a four-year varsity player in Basketball and Track and Field. After graduating from Elizabethton High School in 1963, Larry first attended Hiwassee Junior College and then later Milligan College, continuing his athletic career in college. Upon completing his education, Larry dedicated his life to serving others. Between his active duty and reserve service, Larry served his country in the United States Army for 38 years. He returned home to Carter County and began a career as a teacher and coach. His teaching career lasted for just over 40 years. Larry began racking up accolades as a high school coach and a TSSAA official. He was part of several championship tournament teams, including the 2004 boys basketball State Champion team, the 2017-18 girls basketball state tournament team, and the 2018 girls softball state tournament team. Larry was honored by the TSSAA for serving 53 years as a TSSAA Football Official.
    Larry has spent his life demonstrating a deep devotion to his family, to his community, and to helping others.
    Those left to cherish and remember Larry’s legacy are his two children, Kevin (Ashley) Bowling of Jonesborough and Heather (Eric) Tester of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Payton Tester and Paisley Bowling; his sister, Kathy (Mike) Smith of Elizabethton; his favorite brother-in-law, Eddie Smith of Elizabethton; and his favorite sister-in-law, Vickie Smith of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and church family also mourn his loss.
    A service to honor the life of Larry “Bobo” Bowling will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 28, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Pastor Nathan Jennings and Pastor Bill Greer officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 3 until 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The service will be livestreamed.     ELIZABETHTON — Sonny Lee Bowling, age 63, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 24, 2016, from the Johnson City Medical Center from injuries sustained in an accident.

    Sonny was a native of Carter County and was a son of the late Herman Carl Bowling and Mary White Bowling.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a canine pal, Santa Fe Bowling.

    Sonny retired from the Elizabethton Electric System and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a member of the Tennessee Moose Association, where he attained the Fellowship Degree, which is the highest degree of the Moose. He loved to play golf and loved animals. Sonny enjoyed spending time with his family and special friends and music – He was Dena and Garrett's biggest fan.

    Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Dena Layne Bowling, of the home; three sons, James Garrett Bowling, of the home, Aaron Travis Bowling and Timothy Wayne Mink, both of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Gage and Gunner Mink, of Elizabethton; three brothers, Larry Bowling and Bob Bowling, both of Elizabethton and Joe Bowling, of Philadelphia; two sisters, Kathy Smith and Brenda Hawks, both of Elizabethton; and his canine pals, Cocoa Bowling and Sweet Pea Bowling, both of the home. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    A service to honor the life of Sonny Lee Bowling will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, May 27, 2016, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Travis Biller, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Potter Family. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Friday; or at the residence of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Hester "Bill" Layne at other times.

    The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be James Garrett Bowling, Aaron Travis Bowling, Timothy Wayne Mink, Barry Potter, Billy Potter, Terry "Mud" Montgomery, Chris Cordell, Mike Little, Herbert Layne, Mike Malone and Gary Thornsbury. Honorary pallbearers will be Petie Taylor, Butch Andes, Larry Andes, Adam Matherly and all of his past and present lineman brothers of the Elizabethton Electric System. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 AM on Saturday, to go in procession.
