ROBERT D. HYDER
In the acquirment of his education Robert D. Hyder attended the public schools of Carter Co. & subsequently enrolled in Milligan College, from which institution he was graduated in 1906, with the A. B. degree. In boyhood he had decided to enter the legal profession & upon the completion of his literary education, he began reading law in the office of C. C. Collins. He likewise did some correspondence work for Mr. Collins. From 1906 to 1914 he taught in the Carter Co. public schools & in 1909 & 1910 was superintendent of the schools in this county. In 1914 he took up the practice of law as a member of the firm of Collins & Hyder & is still active in that connection. Collins & Hyder being one of the leading law firms in Elizabethton & Carter Co. The firm enjoys an extensive general practice & handles litigation in all state & federal courts. For the past 3 years Mr. Hyder has been county attorney for Carter Co. & for 1 year he was active as recorder of the town of Elizabethton, having been appointed to that office to fill out an unexpired term.
At Elizabethton, on the 22nd of June, 1909, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Hyder & Miss Mattie L. Brumit, a daughter of A. B. Brumit, a prominent resident of this city. To their union 5 children wer born, 3 boys & 2 girls. One boy & 1 girl died in infancy. The living children are: Carson, 12 years of age; Hillis, 10 years of age; & Helen, 3.
Mr. Hyder served in the Spanish-American War. He was corporal of Company L, 36th United States Volunteer Infantry. In 1911 he assisted in the organization of Company D, 3rd TN National Guard, & for a few months he served as lieutenant of the company. During the World War Mr. Hyder served on the legal advisory board & took a prominent & active part in the furtherance of the government's interests. Mr. Hyder votes with the Republican party. Fraternally he's identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellow, the Junior Order of United American Mechanics & the Woodmen of the World. His religious faith is that of the Methodist Episcopal church & he is a teacher in teh Boys' Bible class. Mr. Hyder is sincerely devoted to his profession & well merits the sucess he has achieved. He is essentially public spirited & is never too busy to give his aid in the promotion of any movement for the benefit of the community at large. His friends are legion.

Vance Hyder, age 99 of Elizabethton passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Oscar and Jane Dugger Hyder. Mr. Hyder was a farmer, who enjoyed raising tomatoes and was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation after 42 years of service. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Jenkins Hyder, December 27, 1998, two brothers and nine sisters.


Survivors include daughter, Nancy Diane Hyder, Elizabethton, three sons and daughters-in-law, Norman "Buddy" Hyder and wife, Jeane Smithdeal Hyder, Elizabethton, Carmon Ray Hyder and wife, Sue Calloway Hyder, Johnson City, Tony J. Hyder and wife, Brenda Peters Hyder, Elizabethton. Ten grandchildren, Michael K. Adams, Bristol, TN, Andy Hyder, Elizabethton, Patrick Hyder, Telford, Timothy Hyder, Johnson City, Christopher Hyder, Johnson City, Kathy Hyder Boling, Elizabethton, Katrina Hyder Hopson, Elizabethton, Alecia Hyder, Elizabethton, Debbie Hyder Hodges, Elizabethton, Tabitha Hyder Blackwell, Elizabethton, 19 great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter. The funeral service for Mr. Vance Hyder will be conducted at 8 PM, Thursday, May 24, 2012 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. C.W. Snodgrass and Rev. Burl Sluder officiating. Music will be under the direction of Katrina Hopson, Debbie Hodges and Tabitha Blackwell. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, from 6:30 PM until 8 PM prior to the service.


The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Friday, May 25, 2012 at Noon at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Mrs. Deloach was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late E.T. "Doc" and Arwilda Williams Deloach. She was also preceded in death by a son, Johnny Whitehead, in 1998, three sisters, four brothers and a great-grandson.

Mrs. Deloach attended Friendship Free Will Baptist Church of Hampton. She was a former employee of Big B Restaurant.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Richard Sheek, Cleveland, N.C., and Wilma and Charles Lyons, Elizabethton, and a brother, Albert Deloach, Hampton. Twelve grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

HAMPTON - Mr. Albert James Deloach, 85, of Hampton, passed away unexpectedly, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital on Friday, December 2, 2016. He was a son of the late E.T. and Wilda Williams Deloach and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Fay Marrs Deloach; a granddaughter, Jocelyn Hendrix; four sisters and four brothers.

Mr. Deloach was a former member and past deacon at Hampton First Baptist Church where he worked with the Royal Ambassadors for twenty years and was currently a member of Hampton Christian Church. He was a willing volunteer, delivered Meals on Wheels and was a "handyman" for the ladies of the church. He spent sixty years enjoying and working in his garden and he also was an accomplished woodworker. He was retired from Sperry-Univac where he was a supervisor.

Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Gwen Hendrix, Hampton; Libby Shipley and her husband, Bobby, Jonesborough; a son and daughter-in-law, Tony & Ginger Deloach, Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Heather Hopland and her husband, Kenny, Elizabethton; Curry Deloach, Johnson City; Glenna Fine and her husband, Anthony, Johnson City; Karen Lester and her husband, Derrick, Jonesborough; Amy Shipley, Jonesborough; and seven great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Deloach will be conducted at 7:00 PM, on Monday, December 5, 2016, at Hampton Christian Church with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, Minister, and Rev. Mike Stout officiating. Mr. Mark Grindstaff will be delivering the eulogy. Music will be under the direction of the church. The family will receive friends in the church from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Monday prior to the service, and at his home, or at the homes of any of the family members, at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Louis Honeycutt, Mark Grindstaff, Terry Banner, Josh Smith, Jackie Smith and Floyd Miller. ELIZABETHTON - Phyllis W. Lovette, age 81, of Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

She was born in Carter County and was a daughter of the late Maude (VanHuss) and Benjamin Harrison Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Lovette, Sr., a brother, Dr. Ben Williams, and three sisters, Christine W. Justis, Elizabeth W. Love and Beatrice W. Alexander.

Mrs. Lovette was a graduate of Elizabethton High School, class of 1954 and a 1961 graduate of East Tennessee State College (ETSU) where she chose music as both her major and her minor. Music was her life and because of her love of music she spent her career teaching others. She taught music at Cloudland High School, Harold McCormick Elementary School and West Hills Elementary School in Knoxville. She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities over the years, including as the director of the Chancel Choir for sixteen years and as the director of the Handbell Choir. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and served as President of that organization and a member of the Elizabethton Women's Civic Club where she also served as President. She loved to collect antiques.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Richard H. Lovette, Jr. (Jennine), of Johnson City; a grandson, Caleb Lovette, of Johnson City and several nieces and nephews.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Lovette will be conducted on Sunday, July 29, 2018, at 2:00 PM in the First United Methodist Church, Elizabethton with Rev. Raymond. W. Amos, Sr. and Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. Music will be under the direction the Chancel Choir of First United Methodist Church and Mr. David Arney, organist. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary from 12:30 – 2:00 PM on Sunday or at her home, 214 West F Street at other times.

JOHNSON CITY - Shirley May Williams, 75, Johnson City passed away Thursday, March 31, 2022 at Lakebridge Healthcare in Johnson City. She was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County and was a daughter of the late James Luther Britt and Luster Hyder Britt. Shirley worked for many years as a CNA. She enjoyed working in her flowers, gardening and walking her dog. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters, June Hughes and Florence Hughes.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Dallas Franklin Williams; a son, Stephen Allen Williams of Johnson City; a sister, Dorothy McKinney of Anniston, Alabama; six nieces and five nephews.

Norman Eugene "Buddy" Hyder, 81, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2017, in the Pine Ridge Care Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Vance & Ethel Jenkins Hyder. Buddy was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. He served in the United States Army. He was owner & operator of Hyder Tomato Company. Buddy was a member of the Valley Forge United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Tony Hyder, a brother-in-law: Allen Smithdeal and a special friend: Mike Honeycutt.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years: Jeane Smithdeal Hyder. A daughter & son-in-law: Kathy & Rick Boling, Elizabethton. A son: Andrew Hyder, Elizabethton. Nancy Diane Hyder, 68, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at Johnson City Medical Center. Nancy was born in Carter County to the late Vance and Ethel Jenkins Hyder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman "Buddy" Hyder and wife Jeane and Tony Jack Hyder, and one nephew, Patrick Hyder.
Nancy was a legal secretary and had worked for both Sam LaPorte and T.J. Little for many years. She was a past president of the Legal Secretary Association and was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Elizabethton.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Michael K. Adams of Elizabethton; a brother, Ray Hyder and wife Sue of Johnson City; and a sister-in-law, Brenda Hyder of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

JOHNSON CITY - Heaven gained the most beautiful angel, Linda Sue Markland Russell, 65, Johnson City went home to be with the Lord on October 12, 2015 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Born in Carter County on January 14, 1950 to the late Orville & Temperence Hyder Markland. She was retired from Leon Fernbach, Inc. She was the greatest wife, mother, grandmother, sister and great grandmother to ever walk the earth. Everyone who knew her loved her so much because of the amount of love she always gave in return. She was truly a remarkable lady and this world really lost a great woman. Linda was of the Baptist Faith and a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters: Jane Cable and Sandie Campbell and her sister-in-law, Donna Markland. Survivors include her husband: Thomas Russell and they were to celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary on November 7, 2015. Three Sons: Thomas Jr. and his wife Amy, Elizabethton, Christopher and his wife Tonya and Michael and his wife Emily all of Johnson City. Six Grandchildren: Christopher Jr., Jordan Blake, Logan, Taylor, Trevor and Bailey Russell , two great grandchildren: Aisley and Hailey. Barbara was a member of University Parkway Baptist Church, where she was a preschool teacher in the Livewire Children's Ministry for over nine years. She was a devout Christian and was part of the Explorer Bible Study group for over 30 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Wayne Goodwin; and three sisters, Brenda York, Marrian Smith, and Jewel Richardson.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Goodwin; a stepdaughter, Patsy Hayes; a stepdaughter, Lois Brady and her husband, Ron; a stepdaughter, Donna Mitchell and her husband, Fred; a stepson, Gary Goodwin; a brother, Carl Hyder and his wife Donna; and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

The Goodwin family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 19, 2019, in the Morris-Baker Funeral Home Dogwood Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 19, 2019 in the Morris-Baker Funeral Home Dogwood Chapel and will be officiated by Dr. Michael Oaks. The committal service will be held at 3:00 pm at Rittertown Baptist Church cemetery in Hampton, TN. Family and friends are requested to gather at the cemetery at 2:50 pm.
